Coach Daboll on Turning Focus to Commanders | New York Giants

Now that we’re in week one, curious how you’re going to manage the QV reps in practice. We’ll we’ll have a walk through here today and focus on today and then as the week goes on, you know, the the backup quarterbacks, we’ll get a lot of reps on the look teams and then we’ll decide what we want to do on some of the periods. Um, but we’re full steam here on Washington. And in the past, I feel like you basically had the number two quarterback take most look team reps. Is that correct? And are you maybe going to have to split that up a little more? Is that your plan? Is what you’re saying? Uh, we’ve done it a variety of ways. Um, so we’ll do what we think is is best for each week. I know you say your full team had on Washington, but uh just this is the last time to really look back, I guess, on the the preseason because we are in like game mode with Jackson and the plan to develop and that obviously shifts to a different mode now. When you were in the training camp in the preseason, you can manipulate things. Was you focused more on building his confidence or having him deal with adversity or is there a balance there? Yeah. No, I appreciate the question, Dan, but we’re we’re on a regular season here. So, um, you know, it’s all on to Washington. Paul Schwarz. Hey, Brian. Paul. Um, excuse me. Um, obviously the proof could be in, you know, what we see on the roster as far as asking you about your confidence and your um your comfort level with your offensive line. I mean, it’s the same group basically. So, can you speak to that a little bit as far as um um what do you see from those five guys? You know, hopefully, you know, if Andrew Thomas is in there and um what you know, the fact that you didn’t make any moves, what does that say? Well, those guys do a good job of communicating with one another. have a lot of confidence in in all those guys that that play those spots. It’s a collective effort offensively. It’s not just on the offensive line. It’s it’s on all the positions and we focused on playing, you know, good offensive football. Do you think that a a quarterback can make a big difference in how an offensive line plays and how it looks? Yeah, I think it’s all it’s it’s on all 11 guys out there on every play. So, um we we’ll do what we think is, you know, the best for all of our guys. I know our guys are, you know, going to compete as hard as they can, but it’s a, you know, offensive football is a collective collective mindset. It’s everybody doing their job at a high level at every position. And and any um thing on Andrew Thomas for Wednesday? You have any thoughts yet on what’s go even today? What’s going to happen with him? Yeah, we’re going to have a walk through today and everybody be out there participating. Thank you. Yep. Evan Barnes. Afternoon, Bren. Evan, kind of going on that note, um, whether or not Andrew is available, just how have you felt about James Hudson’s development at left tackle? Yeah, like I said, I I think all the guys in the offensive line room, the players, the coaches have done a good job, throughout OTAAS, throughout preseason, training camp. So, whoever’s in there will be ready to play. I guess though specifically like just have you liked what he’s brought just as far as just filling in stepping in that role and just holding it down just you know his development from what is that what you expected out of him from signing him? Yeah. No, he’s he’s a guy I’m glad we signed. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do just like all the other guys have. You know, offensive line is, you know, five collective guys seeing it through the same set of eyes or two tight ends, one tight end, what whatever it may be. So those guys are doing everything they can do each day to be as productive as they can. Thanks. Yep. Brian Levy. Hey Brian, how are you? Ryan, uh, since you are on to Washington week, have you decided who the number two quarterback on game day will be? Yeah. any roster decisions based on, you know, who’s going to be the backup or who this player is going to like? We’ll we’ll have that out there on Sunday. Uh so, does that go for maybe starting positions? Like, have you decided who you who won your right guard and cornerback two position battles? Yeah, we have a good idea of of how we’re going to play, Ryan, with the players we’re You don’t want to share You don’t want to share who’s the starter. Yeah, that’ll all come out on Sunday. Okay. Um, and then as far as uh Washington that obviously a team that was in the NFC Championship game last year, uh, I’m sure you guys I know you’re going to take it one game at a time. I’m sure you guys aren’t naive to the fact they were in the NFC Championship game last year. Does that help in terms of getting their attention? the idea that like, hey, maybe this is a chance for us to like start hot, make a statement, uh, you know, what whatever measuring stick kind of game. Yeah. I mean, our focus is on solely on this week uh on Washington and their players and their schemes and that’s unique about the first game of the season. You don’t know, you can study all the the tape you want to study from the previous year schematically. you know, the players that that helps quite a bit, strengths and weaknesses, but you know, you don’t know how they’re going to play or what they’re going to do different. They’ve had a a whole off seasonason to prepare and study and look at the things that they think they can do well. So, that’s the that’s the first game of the season every year is being able to adjust and and do the things you need to in game. But, no question, it’s a it’s a good football team. Uh they’re well coached. They improved their scoring offense by nine points, a little over nine points a game from the season prior to that season, which is the the biggest increase since 2020 of offensive teams. Six come from back wins, you know, coming from behind, excellent special teams unit with three special teams, aces and Reeves, Balor and Owens. Um, and then a defense that is very opportunistic, that plays fast, and the way I know Coach Quinn likes to coach. Um, so there’s a reason why they were in that game. Again, our focus is on this year and and doing the things we need to do to be as good as we can be. And the last one for me is what do you expect from uh Jaden Daniels? You were around obviously Josh when he went from rookie to second year. We know you we know you were fond of Jaden Daniels as a rookie. What do you expect from him here as he starts his second year? Well, I just go off of the tape that I’ve watched. He’s a dynamic football player. He’s accurate. He’s good under pressure. He’s good in situations. He can bring his team from behind. He gives his players opportunities to to make plays in the passing game and and he’s unique in the running game. The way they utilize him, he’s a tremendous football player. So, I expect to see a tremendous football player. Thank you. Yep. Pomrock, Brian, I know it’s you guys have only been together for for a little bit now, but um I’m talking about today. Was is there a change at all to how Russ comes into the building in a in a game week that you’ve noticed? No, Russ is consistent as they come. So, his preparation in an OTAA and preeason and a training camp practice is at elite level. And you know, I know he’s been doing a lot of film work and I know that, you know, he’ll show a lot of the young guys, you know, particularly in the quarterback room, but you know, meeting with the skilled guys, the offensive line, um, you know, what it looks like from his point of view, which is, I’d say, very good at preparation. You know, he knows the league. He’s he’s done it for a long time, but it’s good to have a guy like that in the room. We’ll take two more. Greg Johnson. Hey Brian. Uh I know you said you’re on this week, but I’m just curious when you reflect back on the preseason um in the summer, I mean what what ultimately were the factors that went went into you playing your starters more this preseason and just I mean what’s your confidence level you guys can get off to a better start here with that adjusted approach? Yeah, Greg, appreciate the question. Again, we’re we’re focused on this week, not much what’s happened or the last month or last couple weeks. We got a good challenge ahead of us, a big challenge ahead of us against, like what Ryan said, a team that made it to the NFC Championship game last year and, you know, played really good football. So, you know, our focus is on us doing the things that we need to do to to be as ready as we can be. Okay, thank you. Yep. Last one. Art Stapleton. Hey, Daves. Morning, Art. when uh when you talk you talk about how opportunistic the the defense is in Washington, I’m just curious from an offense off offensive perspective. Obviously, you guys have talked turnovers versus takeaways and how big of a difference that is in the NFL. How has it changed through the years or does it just become a constant finding that balance between not losing your aggressiveness both as a quarterback and as a you know as play callers and just from a mindset perspective but also being wary of knowing how that one big mistake could kind of swing everything in the other direction. Yeah, I think it’s important for the players to be aggressive, the the play callers to be aggressive. There’s a difference between being reckless and aggressive. And you really study how they create the turnovers. What are the situations that you’re in that are, you know, prevalent in terms of taking the ball away, how they run to the football? They play with tremendous speed and aggressiveness and, you know, do a great job of gang tackling and get the ball out. It’s more of how they generate the turnovers art and the situations that you’re in as an offense that gives them advantages to get the ball out. So, it’s not, you know, I never want the quarterbacks to go in and think, well, I can’t do this or I can’t do this. Um, I want them to be aggressive and make proper decisions and you have confidence when you’re out here at practice and they do that and they’ve shown to do that, you know, throughout OTAAS, throughout training camp. That’s really where our focus is is, you know, how have they created the turnovers that they’ve created. You know, was it, you know, huge score differential? Did you play a lot of third and long or second and long situations? Because they got you in, you know, some situations that are, you know, good for the defense, bad for the offense. Who are the players that that do a good job of getting to the ball and taking the ball away when the running back has it? our finish level that we need to have to make sure that we’re chasing the ball and and getting those extra blocks for the guys that have the ball. How can the line protect inside out, the timing and the rhythm and the passing game? All those things that play into playing good offensive football. You’re always going to have, you know, some of those situations come up and you have to do a good job of coaching off of it. And then players have to do a good job of going out there and executing when we’re in those situations.
