REPORT: Jakobi Meyers “A Name To Watch” For The New York Jets

All right, guys. What’s going on? Welcome in. So, Rich Sini of ESPN just dropped a huge like a pretty in-depth article hitting on a bunch of different positions. The center position, wide receiver, uh talked a little bit about Quincy Williams in the linebacker position. Uh Jamal Pritchette as well. There was a little um uh paragraph about him, but I want to focus in on the second point he made, which was a name to watch. talking about a potential wide receiver target here in Jacobe Meyers. Now, Simei says, “One receiver who might be available is Jacobe Meyers, who reportedly wants the Raiders to trade him.” Jets passing game coordinator Scott Turner, a Raiders assistant in the previous two seasons, spoke glowingly of Meyers last December. I tell people all the time, he’s one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached. Myers, 28 years old, is coming off his best season, 87 catches, over a thousand receiving yards, and he’s in the final year of his contract at a 10.5 million base salary and wants a raise. And rightfully so, I mean, Meyers is literally coming off again the best season of his entire career with shaky quarterback play. So, you know, if you’re if you put yourself in in Meer shoes, of course, you’re going to want, you know, an extension. You’re not going to want a, you know, a decrease in pay, obviously. And the Raiders, I guess reportedly up to this point, have been uh a little reluctant to to uh give Me Myers that extension. Now, of course, this this can go any other, you know, any sort of way. We’ve heard uh team say, “Oh, you know, we’re not really interested in paying.” And then they shell out a contract. Uh I mean, we saw what just happened with um Hendrickson. We saw what TJ Watt just got. Who else? Terry McLuren had that whole thing, trade request, and he ends up getting the deal. Um, but Myers is a little bit different because he’s not one of those top tier premier NFL stars like W like Hendrickson, like uh Scary Terry here. Myers is kind of that consistent steady wide receiver, too. All those years with New England, uh, these past couple seasons with the Vegas Raiders, obviously reuniting with Josh McDaniels when he was the head coach over there. So, let’s ask the question. Is there a realistic chance that Jacobe Myers gets traded to the Jets? I think the answer is yes. I think the Jets would have some interest. By the way, Connor Hughes suggested a second round pick in exchange for Jacobe Myers, like compensation wise, no. Not doing that. Not doing that. First round pick, I’m not trading. Second round pick, not trading. Like, I love this upcoming draft class. and we already don’t have a third round pick because of uh Hassan Reic, Joe Douglas, that whole thing. So, the most I would be willing to move for a wide receiver, and you’d really have to sell me on it, is a fourthrounder. But ideally, I want to keep that selection, too. Fourth round picks are cool because that’s like late 90s, early 100s. Like, you can still get a top um like you can you can definitely get a contributor in round four, but potentially a starter. I want to hang on to that those round four uh selections. Uh, and look, we we’ve seen what these wide receivers are going for. It’s not that much. I I don’t I I can’t see a situation where Alec Pierce gets moved for a second. I can’t see a situation where Jacobe Myers actually gets traded for a second. I I mean, look at what George Pickins just went for. Jerry Judy a couple years ago, you know, the these moves um for these guys in like contract seasons, guys that want uh new deals, new extensions, they don’t get flipped for all like this major draft capital. Like you’re trading a second if you’re trading a second round pick for wide receiver, he better be a wide receiver one, not a wide receiver too. But here’s the curveball, right? Let’s say the Raiders are down to move Jacobe Myers. Again, they’ve been uh it doesn’t really seem like they’re down to trade him, but anything could happen. We just saw Micah freaking Parsons get traded like a week and a half before before the start of the season. So, I don’t want to rule anything out, but we’re honestly just a little too close to the start of the season to see a move get made this week. Um, that’s just my guess. I I think right now if you were were to ask Pete Carol and you say, “Hey, is Jacobe Myers maybe a part of the game plan? Do you see him being an impactful piece this Sunday against the Patriots?” Ironically enough, Meyer’s old team, the answer is yes. I I just feel like they are in full operation, full game plan mode. They definitely should be. I don’t see why they wouldn’t be with a week before the start of the season here. Um so to move a guy like that, a big part of the offense to me just feels a little like a pipe dream unless you’re overpaying. And again, I don’t want the Jets to overpay. I I don’t want us to to to jump the gun here. Now, I do think Meyers does fit the Jets. I think he fits the system really well. I think he would be a great great compliment to Garrett Wilson as a wide receiver, too. I think he’s someone who’s shown the ability to consistently get open throughout the years. He plays, he’s available, he’s durable. I like though I like those qualities a lot. Um, that is someone who I think ideally not only just makes sense for Justin Fields, right? When you’re talking about, okay, are are we putting Fields in the best position to, you know, have him succeed as a passer, have him grow as a passer, you know, it’s very difficult to say, okay, we expect you to take a leap. We we expect you to to develop as this as this passer, as our starting quarterback for this season. and you have Garrett Wilson, you have Mason Taylor who’s a rookie, Arian Smith, who’s a rookie, and then a bunch of just one-year contracts all over the place. So, you could definitely argue Myers. You could definitely pound your fist on the table and say, “Hey, like what more do you want? A wide receiver, too, again, who is consistent, who is durable, who fits the system, and is a good compliment to Garrett Wilson.” Like, it you have your options staring you right in the face. But I just feel like at this point in time, first of all, and I hate to say this, but there’s a team in our division who has a massive need at wide receiver in my opinion, a team that Myers has already played for in the New England Patriots, a team that has more cap space. And you do kind of feel like Myers would make sense for uh for New England as well. Could they potentially swoop in and make the deal, help out Drake May, right? May is going into year two, but he’s learning the Josh McDaniels offense. What better person slashcoach to have on the field than someone who’s been in the Josh McDaniels offense before and has had success, Jacobe Meyers, right? So, you can definitely, you know, unfortunately pose that argument, but I just don’t really think the Raiders are going to be trading him this week, you know, week three, week four, week five, week eight, right, as we’re approaching the trade deadline, maybe. But um I just I don’t think it sends a good message to the locker room to move off of a contributing piece that isn’t really being a distraction. Yeah, he requested a trade, but it’s I I don’t I I haven’t heard any reports that uh Myers is throwing anybody under the bus or talking crap about the organization or skipping, you know, I don’t think he’s a hold out or anything. I I think he’s just simply requested a trade. I want an extension. They couldn’t reach one and that’s really it. So maybe something gets done, maybe a trade happens. I’m going to say no, probably not this week before the season starts. But um yeah, the Jets better know what they’re doing at wide receiver, too. And again, they want to run the football. Garrett’s going to do his thing. Great. Mason Taylor, he’s probably going to be the second I I would assume pass catcher in a lot of these different passing concepts, uh or pass catching option. And then Justin Fields on the ground. There’s only one football to go around. Um, but still, you know, I just my fear is that defenses are going to look at the Jets passing attack and say Lazard is not a threat on the outside. Josh Reynolds is not a threat. And I’m not saying these guys are, you know, good for one catch. Josh Reynolds is going to have one catch for 11 yards. That that’s his, you know, contribution as wide receiver, too. I I I think these guys are capable of more. But as far as them getting like five, six, seven catches per game against any defense, I just feel like that’s unrealistic to assume. So, um, yeah. Anyway, let me know your thoughts down below in the comments section. Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it. And as always, go Jets. [Music]

  1. See, this is what is frustrating. The Jets draft a lower ranking receiver in Corely when there were higher ranked receivers in last year's draft (Troy Franklin, Roman Wilson). They could have had an upside receiver in this style of offense to help. To get Jakobi Meyers, the Jets are going to have to pay him for his services (over 10 million dollars). I like him, but I'd really think this all the way through before making a move. Do not give up draft capital or too much money to get him. That's the main thing.

  2. We don’t need a #2. We are not playing a pass happy O. Fields doesn't need added WR pressure. Let him master the LOS and mid game. From that base he can expand next year. Every draft is loaded with WR talent. Keep the picks and especially the $$$ to sign our own players. We need all ammunition for next two loaded drafts.

  3. Passing game is going to be maybe 200 yards per game and Jets have enough talent in WR, TE, and RB to do that. Once Fields proves he can master reading defenses better then we need to either have Smith developed as WR2 or get one.

  4. na the only kind of trade that makes sense for a WR is if they do a player swap with breece, and then just play with the young RBs going forward. but that trade doesnt work for the raiders, they just used a high pick on jeanty. the raiders dont need breece. needs to be a team with lots of WR but a shaky RB room. but giving up a draft pick, then paying someone like meyers is totally a terrible idea.

  5. I most certainly do not expect all of our WRs not named Gareth to be targeted 7+ times per game. My prediction for season 2025 goes like this: Gareth 10-12 targets, all tight ends combined 8 (I consider Beck as TE), Hall 3-5, the rest of WRs 5-7 and occasional pass to Braelon Allen averaging less then 1 per game. With average of 27-30 pass attempts per game. Add 35+ rush attempts per game on average between Hall, Allen and Fields, and that is Jets 2025 story in this season. Moogey is right we do not need better WR in 2025, at least not before Fields learns the playbook really properly and that is not going to be before mid November. Proper WR2 is a story for 2026, as is also a decent rookie QB prospect.

  6. If they can get him for a late round pick, or if they would trade straight up for Lazard, why not go get him?
He is the perfect WR2 and makes the offense markedly better this season. If it turns out he's a good fit, they can always slap the franchise tag on him next year.

  7. This all seems like a precursor to the trade deadline. The same names will come up and will be cheaper with fewer weeks to play with their new team. IMO they should jump at a chance for Pierce with a late pick.

  8. I know we fans have zero patience and want to win now, but draft picks for an almost 30 yr old WR that wants to make his retirement contract? That would be Same Old Jets.

  9. Love the HappyEddyMcGuire comment! Let Justin work with what he has and get comfortable with his new offensive scheme. Let’s “Slow down and Wait to See What We Have”.

  10. Raiders actually have a fair amount of depth at WR. Donte Thornton Jr. is looking like a stud (wish we'd have drafted him). If Jets could get Myers for a 4th next year and offer him 2 years at $15m each, then I say pull the trigger. It would give Justin Fields the legitimate shot to succeed that he was promised by Aaron Glenn.

  11. If they get Jacobi Meyers they should just trade all the picks they have for next year, and use up all the cap space for old and arrogant greedy prima donna players so they can go win the Super Bowl now.

Because this is like baseball when teams can splurge with blank checks to buy their all-star team.

Trade two 1st Round picks for a real quarterback.

Trade the 2nd 2026 and 3rd Round 2027 picks for Meyers. Trade other picks to fill out the defense with a linebacker and a safety.

Let's go win now like the Cleveland Browns from the decade of 2000 to 2010. That's going to work out perfectly 👌👌👌.

We the fans can't wait anymore. The fans want a trophy and a video collage of spectacular hail marys and 50+ yard passing plays every week to crown the Jets inevitable Super Bowl win.

  12. Have a love, hate feeling towards Mayers. Hated him when he was with New England. Love his skills as a Wide-out. Sure hands, great route runner. Would love his addition to our Wide Receivers stable.
