🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS Pittsburgh Pirates /September 02 / Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

First pitch coming at you right after the break. Welcome [Music] Pittsburgh Pirates. just about to get started. And on the mound for Pittsburgh in this one, Mitch Keller and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Tap foul at the plate. Just missed. One ball, one strike. The one-1 is fouled off. Struck him out of the front door. Breaking ball. Boo. He was shopping at the buckle right there. The way that slider made him look, that was just nasty. [Applause] Here’s Muki now. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Betts can claim something not many players can. He’s won the World Series playing in the National League and the American League. Turns and fires to bets. That’s in for a strike at 95. And now it’s even one and one. That one down the line and foul ball. That’s a little bit low. Really good take especially with two strikes. And it remains two and two. Come on. [Music] And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Now he’ll turn for second. Betts into second. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. One out, runner at second. Freddy Freeman will come up to hit and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field and that’s a foul ball. And a count one and two. Bets over at second. One down. Now he breaks his bat on the run. Sends it over to first. Pretty nice play there. Here’s the Dodgers lineup now. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now. Freddy Freeman tops on the team in batting average. Boo. A guy who’s showing off some excellent bat-to ball ability when he digs in at the plate. You know, that’s useful if your team needs to get an inning going, get a leadoff man on, but it’s also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he’s a run producer who can drive in runs if you’ve got guys on base already. So, he’s a huge piece in this lineup. Andy Pahes in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Two outs and one in scoring position. Outside low. One and two count. [Music] Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. off the mark there and the count is even. Two and two. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors, and one left. And now the Pirates will get their first opportunity. No score. And we’re back and towing the slab. Yoshobu Yamamoto. Tell us about him in that sub3 ERA. Singi. Bill. Well, anytime you can keep your erra under three, you’re doing a lot of things right and you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Jared Triolo, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. Here’s a bit of a scouting report on Yoshi Nou Yamamoto. He’s athletic, has elite flexibility, kind of like Yuboo. He’s got good strength and ultra fast arm and exceptional movement patterns. He’s tough on hitters, that’s for sure. Swing and a popup in foul ground and a foul ball [Music] in the air. Right field call under this one and out number one on the grab. Here’s a Pirates lineup now. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustments. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Spencer Horowitz batting with one down, takes the strike. If he doesn’t get a knock right here, that pitch he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch like that from a top level guy like this. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Bent settles underneath it and it’s caught for the tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at outfielder? Call me out.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Two out, space is empty. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Tommy Fam just off the outside edge. One and0. Lifted in the air right field. call. Makes the catch and that’ll do it. We played an inning, no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Michael Conforto. Michael Conorto. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road. And that should help him here today. Pirates. All right, Pittsburgh. Let’s go. Conforto throws right, bats left. 32 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. That one missed. Our plate umpire Earl Hris. Yeah, with Hendricks boo. Kind of interesting. He’s a good consistent umpire, but you do hear that he kind of favors one side of the plate more than the other. So, it’s really hard to know for sure, but I think that usually it has to do something with where he sets up prior to each pitch. The two-1 swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Cruz makes the grab and there’s one down. So digging in, Alex Calliel, Alex. And that’s outside. One out. Base is empty. [Music] That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. Two down. Base is empty. Alex Freeland will hit next. That’s down and in. One ball. No strike. There’s the strike. kicks and fires. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Misses the countdown. Two and two. And look out as that one ran in and got him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Now the catcher up to hit. Dalton rushing. that one off the mark and it’s one and0. This one popped up. Triolo. Oh yeah, he makes the grab and that is that. One left for LA. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here in Pittsburgh. Bottom of the second. And now Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez. and he pumps it a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that’s in the dirt. swang and a miss. Struck him out and there’s one down. Not the best location with the fast ball on strike three, but when you’re pumping high 90s, you’ll get away with some of those. More margin for error. You know, the fast ball has become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport. And I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates. These fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the zone. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit. Ground ball Freddy Freeman and he handles it himself for the out. Batting six, center fielder O’Neal Cruz. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. Two down. Nobody on. [Applause] Second inning here. No score. [Music] Now a check swing on three and one. appeal to third and he went around according to Clyde Washington. Hard ground ball base knock. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Here’s the catcher, Henry Davis, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Come on, Henry. [Applause] Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. First and second, two outs. Canario getting ready to hit. And there’s the strike. just missed. First and second, two down. Bottom half of inning number two. The next pitch misses and a count two on one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. And that is out of play. Two on, two outs. That one misses and now it’s filled up. Three and two. That’s a really good take. Two on, two outs. High in the air out to right. Call makes the grab. That is the inning. Pirates strand a couple. We’ll move to the third with no score. Back here at PNC Park. Miguel Rojos at the plate. Miguel Roas. Keller back to work. Foul ball there. And ball one. Come back to the mound. Over to first. One up, one down. And Kik Hernandez at the plate. 0 for one after striking out looking to start the game. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Late that time, but it’s strike two. Quickly in an 02 count, you’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Next offering down in the dirt. and a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising, even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. Swing and a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck and it’s off the foul pole for a home run. A solo shot and it gives them the lead in the third. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something. But really, it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Here comes Freddy Freeman up to hit and first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. He swings and fouls one off the O2 and downstairs. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming inside and it’s two and two. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Andy Pahes up next for the Dodgers. [Music] Popped in the air left side. Here we go. Corrals it and that’ll do it. Solo shot for the Dodgers this inning. It’s now one- nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. And we’re back. Here’s the rookie third baseman number 17 looking for his first big league hit right here. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] That’s a ball. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] That’s outside and that’s ball two. [Music] Struck him out looking. Oh, that right there is a nasty front door breaking ball. I mean, those are so tough to stay in on and not give up because out of the hand, it looks like it’s almost going to hit you and then at the last moment dips over that inside corner. Really nice pitch. So, the Pirates batting order turns over now. Jared Triolo. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. The shorts stop takes a ball. Just missed. [Applause] And there’s the strike and a big swing and a miss. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That one ripped and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. One out, runner at second. And now Spencer Horowitz popped up foul territory behind the play out number two. Now batting left fielder Tommy Fam. Here’s Tommy Fam. All right, Tommy. Swang and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. Drops into the glove and that will end the inning. Pirates leave one. They still trail one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the top of the fourth. Now it’s the Dodger cleanup hitter Andy Pahes. Come on Pirates. Hard ground ball base knock. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Michael Confor will climb in. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. That misses the zone. Ball one. You know, these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Next offering is in for a strike. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Inside just missed. Pirates. fouls one off. Two and two. Pahes aboard here at first with nobody out. Still two and two after the foul ball. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another swing. it a miss and he struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Stepping in, Alex call grounded out his first time up. Line drive and it goes just foul. [Music] Next offering in there for a strike. 0 and2 now. Don’t play situation here. He’s been working up in the zone. Typically, you look for guys to get that ground ball. See if he adjusts on this next pitch. Fair ball. PZ on his way to third. The throw in and he’s safe. So, it’s first and third with one down. Back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. And up next for Los Angeles, Alex Freeland swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. and a swing and a miss. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. Runners are at the corners. One away. Closed but called a ball. And the count one and two [Music] and there’s a ball that one missed. First and third, one down. Check swing. Now it appealed to third and he held up just enough. That’s ball four. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to Biden. Rushing the next to hit takes ball one. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Bubba Chandler appears to be getting loose. Majinski getting loose as well on the ground right side. Oh, great stop. Throws from his knees, runs, scores, but a terrific play to get the out. Well, he looks so comfortable making that play. Dives, comes up with it, and then from one knee like he’s just playing catch with his kid. Nice throw across the diamond at first. Now a chance for Miguel Rojas grounded out his first time up. Ball one, no strikes. And another ball. He’s got a base open, so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Run comes in from second and they lead by four. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. And the Pirates manager making his way to the mound now as he will make the move. Mitch Keller won’t go any further tonight and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. back with a new arm in a minute. On the mound now for the Pirates, Evans Cisk still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Back to the top of the Dodgers order and next is the designated hitter Kik Hernandez for two in this one on the ground to third and that’s a fair ball. Rojos around third he will score. Comes through with the RBI. Nice job keeping it fair as he turned on it down the line and once it got through the infield it was a double all the way. Here’s Mookie Betts at the plate now. He’s one of the few players in baseball history to win the MVP and World Series in the same season. Yeah, that 2018 Red Sox season was special. And so was 2024 for Muki and the Dodgers. Just like that Boston team, LA won the World Series with the MVP on their roster. Instead of Mooki though, it was Shoi who claimed the double. You can do it. Next pitch is outside. One ball, one strike. Man on second, two down. swing and a chopper out to short. Slings it across and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. So, four runs on four hits, no airs, and a runner left on. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Dodgers five and the Pirates nothing. Back here in Pittsburgh, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. Come on, Pirates. And that’s in for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Headed towards the corner and a foul ball. And that skips in the dirt. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Music] to the right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Andrew McCen. Next is the Pirates DH. Andrew McCutchen 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And it’s fouled away. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. [Music] Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strikeout. Boo. If you can set up a good two- strike splitter with a fast ball on the previous pitch, it’s going to be so tough to recognize and adjust your swing to get a piece of it. Clearly had him reaching for it right there. Foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. One, two. And down on strikes he goes. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing doing here for Pittsburgh. Still looking at that five nothing deficit. Back here at PNC Park. Here is Freddy Freeman. Sis, a 6’2 southpaw, 210 lbs. And they traded for him earlier this year. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and the leadoff man aboard. And next will be the Dodgers cleanup hitter Andy Pahes. One for two. That’s down and in. You know, these Dodgers putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Line to left, lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. And it’s now first and second to start the inning. Up next for the Dodgers. First and second, no outs. Conforto now at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls. Foul. Turn two. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plate. Squirts away a little bit. Freeman the lead runner out at second. Pah on it first with nobody out. [Music] Struck him out without a swing. That was pretty nasty. Alex Call the next to hit. Rightiel. This one in the air. Horowitz settles underneath it, hauls it in. Two away. Going to have to have a little more discipline in future at bats. That pitch looked good, but you can’t hit it. It was just too high in the zone. You usually see a swing and miss or weak contact in the infield. And the batter now, Alex Freeland. Pirates. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Music] Two outs. And that’s off the outside edge. Now two and0. Two and0. [Music] Let’s go. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. Canario pulls it down and that is that. Dodgers strand a couple but they hold a five nothing lead. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the Pirates catcher now. Henry Davis. Davis. Pirates. That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. You know, these Pirates need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Well, that’s a curve ball that I’m sure he wants back at the plate. Two strikes sort of pitch you’re hoping for. A bit of a mistake and I’d say in a very hitable location, but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it. That’s out to center field. Pah moving under this one. pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting third base, two out, space is empty. Now the third baseman and there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And there’s a foul ball. This offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shutout baseball. Off the mark there and the count is two and two. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too, too. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires to first. That completes the strike out. And that’ll do it. And we’re back. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And now the catcher comes up to him. Dalton rushing. Cisk back to work. And that one missing low. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. A right-hander is up and throwing. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. Yeah, ground ball right side and that’s just foul. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. And a swing and a miss. One away. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. Here’s a drive out to right center way back there. Look out. Gone. A shot to the opposite field. It’s 6 nothing. That one just sounded different. And might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. So the batting order turns over now. It’s the DH Enrique Hernandez. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. One out. Base is empty and a run in. And we’re the top half of the sixth. That one misses and one and one. Just missed. Two balls, one strike. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. That one fouled off. Fights it off. He’ll see another. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. Pretty good spot on the outside but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold take. Here’s Betts. He’s already homerred here in this one. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. [Applause] First pitch misses. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive, man. At first, one away. Pirates outside and it’s two and one just off the outside edge. 3-1 And ball four, two aboard. Two on with one out. Freddy Freeman steps to the plate for the Dodgers. One for three. All right, Pirates. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there. Like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. There’s a swing and a drive. And that one is off the wall. One run is in. Cut off. Throw to second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Well done. drives in the run. That was one of those swings that feels like you’re swinging an aluminum bat. It jumped off so hard, squared it up and it went screaming at 108 mph. One down. Andy Pahus digs in now. Ripped to third and caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. Michael, the batter will be Michael Conforto. 0 for three in this one. Lifted in the air left field. pretty well struck. Coming on is Fam to make the play and that is that. So they get two runs on two hits. One of them left the yard. Top of the order. D up in the home half of the six. It’s the Dodgers seven and the Pirates nothing. Bottom of the six. And now the Pirates leadoff man Jared Triolo. Jared Triolo. clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Up and in. And the count even one and one. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Next offering is fouled back. [Music] And there’s a ball [Applause] and a swing and a miss. down on strikes, picks up strikeout number seven. Oh, he’s been racking up the strikeouts. And what’s so impressive, not walking anyone. I mean, this guy’s just going right after hitters, filling up the strike zone, and it looks like hitters, they’re trying to think with him, but they just are a pitch behind. Dominating stuff out there on the mound. That one pushed foul. When a guy’s throwing a lot of first pitch strikes, as a hitter, you got to be ready to hit. Now, that’s not going to help you get deep into his pitch count and into the bullpen, but you got to take what he’s offering that day. The Dodgers up big in this one here in the bottom of the six. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. That one missed. spoils that one and it remains two and two. One down, base is empty. Down to the dirt, swinging a miss. Gets to it onto first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Tommy fam. Tommy Fam, the next pirate to hit. Ball one there. One ball. No strikes. Out of line out towards center. Pahes makes the grab and that is that. And one, two, three go the Pirates. They continue to trail 7 nothing. Number 47 gets handed the rock out of the pen. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers and their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Alex Call Pittsburgh up the middle. Let’s go. Gets it to first and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Alexand and next for LA, Alex Freeland. He’s 0 for one. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates and ball one. [Music] [Music] Come on. And that one hammered way back there and out of here. He circles the bases. third home run of the season and they add to the lead. It’s 8 nothing. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Well, not every home run is a majestic blast off the bat. And even though he hit it pretty well, it was anything but a sure thing to get out. But today, the conditions were right. He got just enough of it. And I think the backspin really helped that thing carry. Dalton rushing steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] That’s down. Base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. And that misses and it’s two and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. One down. Base is empty. Draws the walk there. My partner known for being a touch hacktastic. All right. You walked 130 times. Oh my goodness. In your career. I can’t even believe I can’t. I’d win 13. Yeah. I I I don’t even seriously I don’t believe that. Rojos in the box now. No balls in a strike. Rushing the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Pirates. Next offering is down low. That’s towards center. Cruz heads towards it. He’s got it. ers two away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So, a man aboard next is the designated hitter, Kik Hernandez. Fast ball for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. gets ahead in the count. Pitch misses. Ball one. And that’s outside. And there’s the strike. [Music] Swing and a miss. And he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. It’s now an 8 nothing game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. It’s a bit of a blowout now, which gives us a bit more freedom here in the booth. I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Sing, you grew up in the Bay Area. Did you have a favorite player as a kid? Yeah, I love the A’s lineup. I mean, guys like Ricky Henderson, Dave Kingman, Terry Steinback. Um, I mean, you just go on and on. Tony Armis, uh, just some tremendous rosters back then. And I loved as a kid getting on the BART train, the Bay Area Rapid Transit, pulling up right there to the stadium and then going in and watching the game. Just missed. You also had the pleasure of going over and hitting and taking batting practice at a big leaguer’s house. Who was that? Yeah, Willie McGee. One of the greatest of all time in my opinion. Not in your neighborhood. Yeah. His folks live right down the street from me and that’s where his batting cage was. I used to look out of my backyard down the hill and just dream of one day maybe being able to go over and hit with them. And that dream became a reality when I was drafted by the San Francisco Giants. To third, Freeland tosses across to first and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Desated hitter Andrew McCachen. To the plate now for Pittsburgh is the DH Andrew McCutchen. And the first pitch misses for ball one. That one fouled hard the other way. comes up empty. That’s strike two. So impressive how the VO is still there even this deep into the outing. The pitch to McCutchen. The Pirates with a lot of ground to make up here. Bottom of the seventh. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. [Applause] He was all over that one. Smashed that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Here’s the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. Let’s keep it going. Smoke to right center and this one’s going to go out of here. A massive home run. Home run number 20 on the year. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 8-2. [Applause] With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient, waited for it. It was like BP all over again. So, one out, nobody on. Up next for the Pirates, Henry Davis. That’s in for a strike. I really like how he’s been attacking hitters early in at bats. He’s thrown strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he’s faced in this one. Still only one out here in the inning. That misses the zone and that’s ball one. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. It appears Dave Roberts is going to dig into his bullpen as he comes out of the dugout to make the change. Yoshobu Yamamoto done for the night and he exits with a nice lead. Threw the ball well. And we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. Now pitching. New pitcher now, Shi Otani. He’s pitching on two days rest. Hey Otani at the plate for Pittsburgh. Alexander Canario. You see the velocity 97 with that fast ball. That one missed. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched. Outside low and that’s ball three and that one fouled off. Well, you put good velocity in the head of the hitter. He’s got to get it ready early and then change speeds. Keep him off balance. That’s the goal. Outside and that is ball four. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Number 17 up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. [Music] on the ground right side. Fires over to first inning over. So it may be too little too late, but they’re on the board here in the late going. It’s now 82 and welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to begin the eighth. And now here is Mookie Betts. Come on, Pirates. You can do it. Popped up to the left into foul ground. One down. [Applause] That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. And here’s Freddy Freeman. Pirates. That one a little bit high. One and0. The Dodgers up big in this one. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Come on. And that is out of play. [Music] Let’s go Pirates. That’s in there. And the count one and two. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another one down. Base is empty. Hard hit right side. Freeman is out. There’s two away. Now batting center fielder Andy Pahes. And now the center fielder Andy Pahes. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s off the inside edge. Two balls in a strike. Just missed. [Music] Fought off foul. [Music] Two down. Nobody on the ground to third. Throws to first and the Dodgers are set down in order. Three up, three down for him there. Last half of the eighth coming up. It’s the Dodgers eight and the Pirates two. Back here in Pittsburgh, bottom of the eighth and here is Jared Triolo. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. Check swing called strike. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. Nice grab onto the pitcher. And very nicely done for the out. Now batting first base Spencer Horwit. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Spencer Horowitz. Otani, a righty that throws with power. 30 years old now. And he was born in Japan. Top of the zone for a strike at an even 100. Go Pirates. That’s off the mark. And it’s one and one. One and one. That’s to third. Whips it to first. And a couple of quick outs. Now batting left fielder Tommy Fam. Two down, base is empty. Tommy Fan, the next Pirate to hit. He’s been a great free agent sign. Go Pirates. Fast ball is outside. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Swings and misses and the count one and one. Just not able to catch up to that velocity. swing and a miss. That one at 99 and the count is one and two. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Let’s go. Foul ball still a one and two count. Come on, let’s go. That’s a little bit low. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Bucks go down quietly and it’s still 82. Carmen Majinski on a pitch out of the pen here and he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per inning. Michael Conforto steps to the plate for the Dodgers. 0 for four with a pair of strikeouts and a pair of flyyous. Pittsburgh. First pitch and he just misses. And another ball. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. And there’s a ball. out towards right center. That’s well struck and that’s going to bang against the wall around first. Digging for two. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. All over that one right there. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. So, a man aboard, Alex Call, getting ready to hit. Just missed. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the ninth. One-1 now. Swing and a base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Up next for the Dodgers, third base. And up next for Los Angeles, Alex Freeland. He’s already homered in this game. Swinging a foul straight back. No outs. Runners at first and third. [Music] bows it back with two strikes. Next pitch misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. lifted in the air out to left. Coming on his fam to make the play and there’s one down. Now batting catcher Dalton Rushing. Next up, the Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Next pitch is downstairs. And there’s the strike. in the air left field makes the catch. Runner tagging from third. He’ll score on the sack fly and they’re pulling away up by seven now. So up next, Miguel Rohos. Man, Miguel Rohan. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Call leads off first with two down to the inning. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. And they’ll do it again. Here’s a one, two. Sets him down looking. Called strike three. And a fast ball up in the zone. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Dodgers nine and the Pirates two. Back here at PNC Park and the batter now, Nick Gonzalez. Nick Gonzalez. Otani back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. And that chance handled on to first, one out. Bottom of the ninth. Now batting the hitter, Andrew McCutchen. So now here’s the DH. Andrew McCutchen. Yeah, that’s too high. Next offering in there for a strike and the count even at one. The Pirates with a lot of ground to make up here in the last half of inning number nine. Swinging a ground ball, zips it across. Two up, two down. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. So, it’s their last chance in this one. O’Neal Cruz, the next pirate to hit. Fast ball for a strike. One and one. And that’s downstairs and outside. That’s the ball. [Applause] That misses and now three and one. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Well, two out walks are never good, especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout. But he’s still in a good spot. He’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order. Davis. So, two down. Henry Davis will hit next. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. There it was, a high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. That one the other way and foul ball. One strike away. That one way inside. And a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. Offensive explosion today for these players. They gave up a few runs, but they had more than enough firepower to turn this one into a blowout. This one ends the final 92. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout. for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
