Alex Bregman on Red Sox Losing Roman Anthony
the gut punch to lose one of the best players in in the world. But um we got to keep focus on the next pitch, continue to battle and hope he gets back uh sometime in the postseason or whenever that may be or I don’t know, maybe at the end of the year. I have no idea really um the timetable or anything like that. My job is to come here um trying to execute and uh I feel like the rest of the guys do focused on doing the same thing. as a leader of this team, what needs to be said or does something need to be said to make sure everybody’s still locked in after this? No, everybody everybody’s uh I mean over the course of this season, we’ve dealt with a lot of different um different things and the message has remained constant of control what you can control. Um execute your game plan and uh move focus on the next pitch and and find a way to win. And uh feel like we’ve done a good job of that. Um and we got to continue to do that now. What about sort of, you know, obviously he can do a lot on the field, he’s a good outfielder, good defender, good base run, all that. But the intangibles, he seemed to bring a lot of energy when he got here. Like where do you maybe find that with For sure. I feel like um I don’t I don’t think anybody here needs to try and do anything more than they’re capable of doing. continue to be themselves and execute their own game plan and focus on um just doing what makes them successful. Um obviously it’s a he’s a incredible player and um it’s obviously tough to lose him. Um but at the same time uh we don’t need people trying to do more than they’re capable of doing. They need to stick to what makes them good and what makes them successful and play uh their brand of baseball. So just uh I mean when when when this stuff happens you have to uh just execute at a high clip, execute at a high level and um that’s it.

This is terrible đź’” Hopefully the team keeps fighting! GO SOX!
Gotta keep some perspective. Yes, it hurts. But do the math. A bad replacement (and hopefully the replacement isn’t “bad”) will likely be about 100 points lower in most key offensive stats. That’s one hit every two+ games. That’s it. One player doesn’t devastate a team. Ok, look, I’m not saying it’s not bad. Sox have lately tended to bunch hits (have we gotten over the LOB problem?). So, that one extra hit every 2+ games may often equal a run or runs. Fewer runs = more chance to lose. So, yeah, we may drop a couple of games here on out that we otherwise would’ve won with Anthony. And every game is important in this AL East and Wild Card cat fight. So, yeah, I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt. It does. BUT…
What I am saying is: it’s not devastating. It’s not a death blow. It’s the old “next man up” mentality. Yoshida seems like MAYBE he’s breaking out of his slump. Rafaela seems like MAYBE the same. If some of these guys step it up, Sox will be just fine. I know, that’s a big “if”. A lot of the game is mental (I think that’s a big part of Yoshida’s problem… he’s just NOT as horrific as he’s played the last couple months). That’s hard to just switch off and on; it’s something you’ve gotta battle to overcome. So, I don’t KNOW that some of the guys will step up. But if they do, we’ll be just fine.
Furthermore, consider the typical return time for someone with this injury. If we can find a way to scrape and claw to win the division, Roman may not miss any of the playoffs. That is, the typical recovery time probably says he misses the WC series. But here’s the thing, you’ve gotta play great to catch the Jays and win the division. And you’re already several games up on the Astros. So, it’s the AL West winner who’s likely the lone division winner who has to play in the WC round. Take the division and you get a bye. That adds several more days of down time. Once the ALDS comes around, you’re looking at five weeks. Solid chance Roman is ready to go by then (he could be ready by the WC… it’s only several days earlier); but just that 4-6 week average… five weeks is more likely than four. So… much better chance he returns for the ALDS.
Sox just need someone to step up and they need to battle through this. They’ll be fine.
Is Wilyer Abreu still around?
