🔴LIVE 🔴San Francisco Giants VS Colorado Rockies /September 03/ Mlb today /MLB THE SHOW 25

An NL West matchup on the show. It’s the San Francisco Giants going up against the Colorado Rockies. John Shami and Chris Singleton on the call. Well, this is one of the most picturesque settings there is in the entire sport. You’ve got the trees out in center field. You’ve got the waterfall. You’ve got just tremendous backdrop of the mountains. But one thing about this ballpark is it plays fast. So, you got to be ready defensively and you also have to keep the ball down. Set your sights just a little bit lower because of the altitude and elevation. Pitches don’t break as well. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Just about set to go. And on the mound in this one, Chase Dolander. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Elliot Ramos leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 640. lined into right. Moniac makes the grab. One away. Here’s the Giants lineup. It’s been a real struggle for this group. Dead last in the league in hits. So, a lot of empty swings and soft contact leads to not much scoring. Chris, yeah, could build an i5 wind farm with this lineup the way these players swing and miss. I don’t know exactly what it is. is I mean they’re still professional hitters but it’s just been up and down the lineup this year just swinging and missing. Clearly they got to make some adjustments. Major changes are needed because these players aren’t going anywhere. They continue to have the trouble they are having making contact. Rafael Des batting with one down takes a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. One out. Base is empty. Little bit low. see if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you can get hurt. And Rafy falls victim to the K. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Willian Damas stands in and the first pitch misses for ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. Come on. Chase rips one to right. Pulls up and that’s in there for a knock. Batting fourth, first base Dominic Smith. Dom Smith stands in. Come on, Chase. Right down to shoot. Go and one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Don’t do it again. Two outs just off the outside corner and the count one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. That misses and it’s two and two. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Ground ball to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Giants nothing. Rockies coming up. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Denver and on the hill for the Giants. Kai Tang, Chris, what should we keep an eye on here with him? Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip, but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So, we know he’s prepared. We know this guy is a competitor, and we’ll watch how he works in this one. Tyler Freeman, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] Late swing fouled off. This one smoked out to left. Ramos makes the catch and there’s one gone. Time to check out the Rockies lineup. It’s been a downright dreadful year for them offensively. They are dead last in the league in runs scored. Boo. The clubhouse staff doesn’t even like watching this team play. That’s how bad it is. And they’re usually your biggest cheerleaders when things aren’t going well. But the team, they’re lacking in some areas for sure. They’re going to have to figure out some ways to try to upgrade this lineup. Maybe it’s something that takes place in the offseason, but you just can’t put this type of product out on the field if you want to maintain a good solid fan base. Mickey Moniac in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Rockies. That’s off the inside corner. Now 2 and 0. And another ball [Applause] and that’s ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Hunter Goodman now at the plate. Ruer takes off. That’s in for a strike. throw to second save. I think that steel kind of sets the tone, not just for this game, but for the entire series, first inning, game one. So, that kind of tells me they’re going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can. check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Breaking ball misses down and away. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Grounds one to short. Nice grab. Gathers and throws. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s safe. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. Maybe got a little too excited. and he was probably feeling it as well. But either way, that’s a tough play and a tough error. Two on, one out. And next is the designated hitter, Jordan Beck. That’s towards center. Lee under it. Brings it in. And there are two down. Batting fifth, center fielder, Brenton Doyle. Brenton Doyle will hit next. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs and he pumps it a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. but left the bat on his shoulder. And that one fouled off. Got him swinging. It’s a strike out. Slider got him for strike three. Oh, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. And we’re back. Second inning, set to go. Now it’s Matt Chapman. Chapman getting to start at third, hitting fifth in today’s lineup. He joined the team as a free agent. Chapman gets a piece there. Next offering is fouled back. Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. And now the center fielder, Jung Hulie. Check on the runner. Chapman back on a dive. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. That one the other way. Tovar slings to second. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Now at the plate, Casey Schmidt. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Second inning here. No score. That one finds the corner and it’s one and one. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. And there’s a ball. Line drive. He won’t get there. And that should be extra bases around first heading for two. And that’s a double. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. And now the switch hitting catcher Patrick Bailey. That’s in for a strike. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Runner at second. Two down here in the top of the second. Rockies. Popped up. foul territory behind the plate. Squeezes it and that’s the third out. One left for San Francisco. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Korsfield, we head to the bottom of the second. Now it’s the shortstop. Ezekiel Tovar Tang back to work. Just missed [Music] that now. One out to right. Gilbert makes the catch. One down. Batty seven, third base number 12. Next for Colorado, Kyle Kerosy. Swings through that one for strike one. All’s the counties. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes he might get a little jumpy, a little excited to expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. One ball, two strikes. Good eye in that spot. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Music] Go home the other way and foul ball. Two two now on the ground to third. Get there. Throw to first in time. Batting eighth leftielder. Here’s the left fielder, Fernandez. Swang and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. That’s back there and it’s into the bleachers out of here. A shot to the opposite field. His fourth home run of the season. It’s one- nothing. [Applause] There was a fast ball down the middle. I don’t think the hitter recognized the pitch, but once he did, was quick enough to get it in play with some authority. He got that up and out of here. Base is empty with two away. Here’s Orlando Arcia. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two down. Nobody on. That’s in there. No balls, two strikes. Highfly ball out towards left field. Way back there. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Nice rip. So the Rockies lineup turns over. Tyler Freeman digging in for the Rockies. He’s 0 for one. First pitch misses. [Music] swing and a ground ball out to short. Adamus sends it to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. The Rockies get one by way of the long ball. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the rookie right fielder, Drew Gilbert. Gilbert, swing at a high-fly ball right field. Doyle sizing this one up. puts it away for the out. Almost a loud start to the inning on that first pitch. Man, he’s going to want that one back. No doubt. Here’s Elliot Ramos. He’s 0 for one. And there’s the strike. Good heater at 98. fought off foul. So why the kick the pitch ripped right field that’s back there? That one way back and it’s gone. His 17th of the year. It’s 1-1. That was blasted. Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. That’s an incredible job of letting that breaking ball get deep, trusting your hands, and driving it out the other way. That’s how you practice it in the cage. Incredible when you can translate it into the ball game. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Raphael Devers up to hit. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. [Music] That one not close. And count one and two. [Music] [Applause] swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that’s got extra bases written all over it. Now he’ll turn for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay in there safely. All over that one right there. Came screaming off the bat. I’m sure exit velocity is off the charts. No doubt he squared that baseball up perfectly. So there was no fluke to that triple by any means. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Willie Adamus the next Giant to hit. One for one with a single so far. That one’s in there. Strike one. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Here’s the pitch to Adamus. Late swing. Fouled off. Runner on to third. One gone. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. A short stop takes the ball. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Some heat there at 98 mph. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. to the infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. Now it’s Dominic Smith. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That misses the zone. Ball one. Nope. That’s a ball. Devils on third with two out. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit in the air right field. Pretty well struck on the move racing back. Holds it in on the warning track. It’s a run for the Giants on the solo blast. All even now at 1-1 and welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. So in now for Colorado, Mickey Monia. All right, Rockies. Get it going. Fouled off left side. [Music] Fast ball for a strike. [Music] A change up missing. Going to count one and two. That’s to third. Over to first. One up. One down. Now batting catcher Hunter. Hunter Goodman digging in for the Rockies. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Music] That one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. And he’s got a double. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. One out, runner at second. Next for the Rockies is the DH Jordan Beck. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and one. Check swing called strike. Signs of movement in the Giants bullpen. Number 63. The rookie right-hander is getting loose. Luke Casey a left-hander also throwing. [Applause] That one the other way gets down. Base hit coming home. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. They take the lead. It’s 21. Picks himself up an RBI. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And the batter now, Brentton Doyle. Throw to second. Ow. That’s just a perfect catch and throw right there. You get a guy with that kind of speed trying to take second. He’s got such a good arm back there, but that had to be on the money. Pressure situation, if you will, right on top of it. Next offering upstairs. Swinging a foul straight back. And now it’s one and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Two outs. Chopped to the left side. Picks it up with a bare hand. Not in time. He’s safe. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. [Applause] We’re under at first with two away. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Ezekiel Tovar. Little bit low. And that is ball one. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. drilled out towards left center field. Ramos sizes this one up. Makes the grab and that is that. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and it’s now a two-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. out of the fourth and now Matt Chapman. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list in there at the knees. This guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop and he welcomes the difficult play. Can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough plays. look very easy and there’s one down. So digging in Jung Hu Lee. So what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet. Does he have good feet? Is he able to quickly react? And when you have good feet, you’ve got soft hands. And soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy. And ball one. That one misses now. Two balls in a strike. To third. Boots it. still finds a way to get off a throw and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Casey Schmidt. Now a chance for Casey Schmidt. Doubled his first time up. Fast for a strike. Holding on to a one-run lead. Top half of inning number four. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. That misses. And that’s ball one. That’s a little bit low. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. ripped on the ground to second. Throws to first in time. Giants go in order. So they go quietly there to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Rockies two and the Giants won. Logan Webb taking over on the mound. And if you dig into his walk rate, his numbers are really impressive. He’s really filled up the strike zone this season. So these batters better be ready to swing the bats. So in now for Colorado, Kyle Keros 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. And that’s outside. One and0. right through there for a strike. [Music] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And downstairs goes down looking now. The left fielder, he’s already homerred here in this one. Ya Fernandez outside low and that’s ball one. That catches the corner. Strike two. That one missed. [Applause] Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Still two and two after the foul ball. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Arcia in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two down. And he can’t come up with it. still able to fire over and he’s going to make it to first and we’ll see how they score it. An uncharacteristic mistake from a really good defensive player. Here’s Tyler Freeman to hit. Tyler Freeman and the sweeper catches the plate. Let’s go Rockies. That one is absolutely belted and it one hops the wall coming home. The relay to the plate. He will score. It’s 3-1. He was all over that one. That pitch came off the bat really well into center field and he clearly put a nice swing on it. And anytime you can get one to drop in out there, you know, you stung it pretty good because it seems like center fielders these days to a man, these guys can run down just about everything hit their way. Next to hit for the Rockies, Mickey Monia and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Two outs and one in scoring position. [Applause] Smoked on the ground to second. Tosses to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. Rocks with a runcoring double. And this is now a 31 ball game. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Jimmy Herget. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Swinging a drive deep right field and that’s a foul ball. Herget in his fourth year, 31 years old and he found his way onto the team after being claimed off waiverss. Swanging a popup catcher tosses the mask, settles under it and there’s one down. Couple of pitches and a quick out. Now batting right fielder Drew Gilbert. Drew Gilbert digs in now. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Rockies. And that’s him for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. inside at one and one. Hard hit left side. Whips it across and a couple of quick outs. Well, boo, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. the way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the left fielder, Elliot Ramos. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Oh, great stop. Throw to first and he’ll be safe at first. didn’t look to me like he got a great handle on the ball as it came out of his hand. Cold nights not really fun to play in and it makes it tough to hit as well. Makes it tough to throw and might have played a factor right there. So, a man at first. Here’s Raphael Des one for two. Checks over to first back safely. Let’s go Rockies. And he takes a strike. [Applause] Tying run at the plate and it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter. He’s got it. And that is out number three. So the Giants leave one and it remains a 3-1 ball game. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And here’s the catcher, Hunter Goodman. Hunter Goodman Webb back to work. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Swings and misses. That’s strike two. Swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. Throw to first gets him one away on a drop third strike. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Now Jordan Beck. Hit hard on the ground to short over to Smith. Two away. Now batting center. So two down now. And here is Brenton Doyle. for a strike 0 and one. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is Oh, and that deflects off his glove. The throw is still in time and they do get the third out of the inning. Rockies are down quietly, but they still lead it 3-1. Now pitching. So the closer summon from the bullpen, Victor Vodnik. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. And the batter will be the shortstop, Willie Adamus. Willie Adams. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. [Music] [Applause] Foul ball there. Sets him down on strikes. Called strike three. And a fast ball up in the zone. And now Dominic Smith both for two in this one. [Applause] And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] Come on. And that one ripped to left. And that’s just foul. The O2 struck him out looking and they’re down to their last out. This is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer. Come in and just destroy all hope. First two batters, two strikeouts. See if he can strike out the side. Now Matt Chapman at the plate. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] In for a strike and it’s nothing and two. This could end it. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball two. And that one missing low. Pressure Mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. [Applause] Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. That one down the line and foul ball. Two outs. fouls it back with two strikes. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Too high. That’s ball four. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Oh, very close with the location right there. It’s just tough to get rewarded on the call with pitches near the top of the strike zone. And up next for San Francisco, Jung Hu Lee. Pickoff throw. Chapman back in on a dive. Well, at least you got the pitcher thinking a little bit. You don’t want to run yourself out of the ball game. You get thrown out or picked off, it’s over. That one in triple digits. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Tying run at the plate. That one blasted deep to right. That’s back there. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. Chapman scores and it’s a one-run game. Well, back within one as he brings home the run. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. And up next for the Giants, Casey Schmidt trying to deliver as the hero and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. All right, you got it. [Applause] So, the tying run at second and that’s a little high. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. That’s down and in. Two balls, two strikes. Man on second, two down. Stays alive. Hard liner. And he’s got it. Ball game. And the Rockies hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. I don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team. Every ball club wants to be dominant at home. Winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one.
