The Pittsburgh Steelers Just Got HUGE NEWS That Impacts Their Week 1 Matchup vs. The New York Jets

[Music] The Pittsburgh Steelers just got a huge week one update as they prepare for their season opener versus the New York Jets on Sunday. I’ll break down what that news update is at the top of today’s edition of Steelers Talk. And then head coach Mike Tomlin spoke yesterday on why he feels very confident in the Steelers wide receiver situation heading into the 2025 season. I’ll share my thoughts on what he had to say yesterday and my thoughts on the Steelers offensive weaponry on a whole later in the show. So, make sure you guys stick around. But first, before we get into the content today, I want to give a big congratulations to Giants Now, our Giants channel here at Chat Sports, because they added a 1,000 new subscribers in the span of just three days. And in terms of a non watch party type of scenario, that is a chat sports record. So, big shout out to Marshall Green, who’s a good friend of mine, and the Giants Now crew. But yesterday, we actually passed 90,000 subscribers here on Steelers Talk. So, I want So, I kind of came up with an idea here and I want to present a challenge to you guys uh for a special reward on Sunday’s watch party if we can hit it. If we can get to 91,000 subscribers by Friday. So, if we can replicate what the Giants Now team was able to do at 1,000 subscribers on just VOD’s uh YouTube videos alone here in the next 3 days, we’re going to do a very special giveaway on Sunday on our watch party when the Steelers play the New York Jets here in week one. So, if you guys want to click that subscribe button if you haven’t already, you guys want a chance for a special giveaway on Sunday’s watch party. New viewers, we are counting on you guys to click that subscribe button. Uh right now we are down the home stretch to 100,000 subscribers here on Steelers Talk. I feel extremely blessed to be able uh to talk Steelers football with you guys every single day on this channel. Um and the fact that 90,000 of you guys are already subscribed, thank you guys so much. But I would love to get to 91,000 before we kick off on Sunday. So if you haven’t clicked that subscribe button yet, you want daily free and informative Steelers content on this channel every single day, click that subscribe button. And with that, let’s get into the huge news of the day here where Jets right guard Elijah Vera Tucker, former first round pick, has suffered what is believed to be a serious arm injury and will miss week one versus the Pittsburgh Steelers and he’s expected to miss honestly a pretty extended period of time here. Obviously, bad news for the New York Jets and we’re wishing Elijah Ver Tucker a speedy recovery here. Diana Rousini from The Athletic had the news today saying Jets guard Elijah Very Tucker has suffered a potentially serious injury and could miss significant times. Source says New York’s offensive line takes a hit ahead of its week one game against the Steelers. Vera Tucker was just named a captain by head coach Aaron Glenn. Then Ari shortly after that said Jets guard Elijah Vera Tucker suffered a serious arm injury that is considered serious and could require surgery per Diana Rousini. He’s undergoing mo more tests to determine the severity. So, you know, this is obviously a big hit to the New York Jets offensive line and really to their team because heading into the year, Aaron Glenn, uh, their new head coach there has made it abundantly clear that they want to establish the run, that they want to be a running football team this year. It’s one of the big reasons why they went out and signed Justin Fields to $20 million per season is because they want their identity to be upfront and with the run game. And Elijah Ver Tucker is their best offensive lineman. He’s a team captain for them. And unfortunately, he has dealt with some uh injury stuff throughout his career, but this is a really big hit to that offensive line because outside of Vera Tucker, there’s a lot of unproven entities on that offensive line. And you know, their replacements that they’ve got coming up here um probably definitely are not on the same level that Vera Tucker brings to the table every single week. So, I would assume, guys, that Josh Meyers, who was brought in in free agency this year from the Green Bay Packers, is the next man up. There was a quote unquote competition between him and Joe Titman, uh, their draft pick from last year, uh, for the center position. Tipman ended up winning that competition. But now that Vera Tucker’s out of the mix here, my guess is Meyers will play center for them and Titman will end up playing right guard. Let’s start with Meyers and what you guys can expect from him. He has been a very lackluster uh center for a very long time in Green Bay. You can ask Aaron Rogers. He was there in Green Bay with Rogers in 2021. Um uh of course there and and of course in 2022, but you know, you guys can see the the PFF grades not fantastic. Not that uh PFF grades are gospel or anything like that, but Meyers has certainly not been considered a top flight center in the National Football League. He’s kind of been seen as a replacement level starter type of guy. um which is a big downgrade from like the probo caliber guy that Elijah Farah Tucker is. So I would assume here guys that this is how we look at the starting offensive line heading into the week. Joe Tipman will be right guard, not center. Um Josh Meers, I’m guessing will be the center for this football team. Uh then you got Armen Meu, the rookie out of Missouri, tasked with going up against TJ Watt without Elijah Vera Tucker right next to him to provide support. Uh so that’s a big development in this week one matchup. You got Aloo Fashionu from Penn State Nate, their first t their first round pick two years ago. Had an up and down season. They’re certainly relying on him to make a big step up here with Justin Fields under center this season. John Simpson coming over from Baltimore had a really good season last year, but honestly throughout his career, he hasn’t been all that fantastic. So my guess is he kind of regresses back to the mean. So with with Elijah Ver Tucker, I think this is a pretty darn good unit that needs to be reckoned with. without Elijah Ver Tucker. Honestly, this is not a particularly good offensive line in the National Football League in my opinion. There’s a lot of inexperience. There’s a lot of talent there, especially at tackle, but there’s certainly a lot of question marks in this group heading into the year, which is not a good sign if you are a New York Jets fan heading into 2025. Terms of Titman, what he brings to the table, uh he did play a little bit of right guard back in 2023 for the Jets and this is how he graded out. uh you know, not bad in most of the weeks. Uh now, his first two weeks were a lot better than his final two weeks there and then he moved back over to center uh where he’s been playing uh since. So, you know, he’s certainly got a little bit of experience there. I would say he’s probably better as a center than a guard. So, you’re uh downgrading at center and you’re downgrading at right guard on this offensive line. So, that is just uh terrible news if you are a New York Jets fan. And obviously that’s going to provide opportunities for the Steelers defensive line and their pass rush uh to eat. You know, not only is Justin Fields uh notorious for holding on to the ball forever and being a slow mental processor, but also, you know, now you get this news on the offensive line where they have probably their best player on that offensive line out for this football game. So, I’m expecting TJ Watt going up against that rookie Armenu to really eat in this football game. I’m expecting Cam Hayward and Keano Benton to eat against that very questionable interior offensive line. Now, I’m expecting YA Black when he gets in to have a really good game as well. I think that, you know, if you’re the New York Jets and you’re in a situation where you need to pass the football in this football game, uh, good luck because this pass rush is coming for you. So, let me know the overunder with the sack total for the Steelers defense here in week one. Will Pittsburgh have over or under? Four and a half sacks on Sunday. I think they’re going to hit the over on this, guys. Justin Fields holds on to the ball forever. It’s a great pass rush. It’s not a great offensive line. Now, I think they get over five sacks in this football game. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section for today’s pin question uh by typing O for over or you for under. In just a second here, I’m going to tell you about our sponsor today at Prize Picks. And while I’m talking about prize picks today, let me know your over or under pick for the Steelers pass rush this weekend. And with that, let’s have a word from our sponsor today at Prize Pickics. That’s essentially a free play right there, guys, because it’s just a half passing yard there. I’m taking the more on receiving yards for George Pickkins. It’s good to be right. So yesterday, Coach Tomlin addressed the media and we did discuss some of the things on yesterday’s news and rumors video, but he really really went into detail about the wide receiver two position and you can tell that he’s a little bit upset with kind of the narrative surrounding the quote unquote wide receiver two position. He feels like he has a lot of confidence in this group and he and in his offensive weaponry heading into the 2025 campaign. I wanted to break down his uh his uh comments here in detail here. This is what he had to say about the wide receiver situation here in Pittsburgh. I’m extremely confident in Calvin Austin, but I’m also equally confident in Roman Wilson and Jonnu Smith and Pat Frymouth. There’s a lot of speculation and narratives about a quote unquote number two receiver. And I think in today’s game, it comes at you in a lot of ways. Jonnu is somewhat of a positionless player. Calvin is is growing and has grown and made big strides a year ago. We’ve been really excited about Roman Wilson in team development and so I’m less concerned about who occupies the number two position. One thing is for certain, a talent like DK Metaf dictates a lot of schematics. His presence is going to provide opportunities for others. Whether it’s Calvin Roman, Jonnu, Frimouth, it’s not a big issue for me or for us. So, this is what I’ve been kind of been saying on the show for kind of weeks at this point. We’ve talked about wide receiver possibilities on this show, but I’ve been pretty uh consistent, I think, on this show, guys. Telling you guys that they like Roman Wilson and they like Calvin Austin, the third. Not only are those two guys relatively cheap in terms of the cat pits at this current point in time, but also this team wants to live in 12 and 13 personnel. So, it doesn’t really make a ton of sense if you want to lead the league in 13 personnel where there’s only one receiver on the field. it doesn’t make really a lot of sense to go out and make a move for a Terry McLuren or maybe even like a Tyreek Hill where you’re paying two guys big money when one of those guys is not going to be slated on the uh to be on the field for a big chunk of especially early down snaps. All right, this team wants to play heavy. They want to play uh with multiple tight ends. They want to have that advantage that Darnell Washington gives them in the run game by pretty much giving them a sixth offensive lineman. And they also want defenses to play heavier. So that gives more opportunities to guys like Jaylen Warren, Calvin Austin the third, Roman Wilson, DK Metaf, these guys that can really fly out in space. If defenses play slower and heavier, that’s going to give them more opportunities. And I actually really like the Steelers offensive plan this year, guys. And I think that this trio of wide receivers here in Pittsburgh are actually going to surprise people. Now, is Roman Wilson going to have like a 1,000yard season? And is this going to be like a true dynamic duo like Jamar Chase and T. Higgins? No. I don’t expect that. All right. I expect after DK to be have it be more of a committee. All right. Depending on what team that they play on any given week, which opportunities uh go to which player. Um it’s going to depend week to week. All right. Some weeks it’s going to be Roman Wilson that’s going to be your number two guy. Some weeks it’s going to be John Smith as a as a manufactured touch guy as a tight end. Sometimes it’s going to be Pat Frymood. Sometimes it’s going to be Calvin. like it’s going to be kind of a rotation week to week based on the matchup, which guy uh has the advantage against the opponent that week. And like Mike Tomlin says, DK Metaf with his size and speed combination, not to mention his yak ability demands a lot of attention that opens up opportunities for other people. So, when you take into account all the information here of the style of offense the Steelers want to play, uh, you know, the money aspect of things, not wanting to pay another bigname receiver because one of them is going to have to be off the field and 13 personnel, all these different things, guys. And then you also add the element of the downfield threat element that both Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin the third bring with their speed and ball tracking ability. I actually really like how this kind of offensive weaponry group kind of gels together heading into this season. And you know, at the end of the day, guys, if Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin the third can’t step up, and they really do need to make a move at wide receiver, too, midway through the season, uh, they could do that at the trade deadline. Like, there’s a lot of really interesting names that could be available at the trade deadline this year. Tyreek Hill being maybe the biggest name of those, but also guys like Ro Romeo Dobs that we’ve talked about on this show before. A lot of these guys on one-year contracts um that you know might be dealt at the trade deadline are certainly options for the Steelers if Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin the third can’t step up in their respective roles this year. But like I said guys, I think those two guys have a really good chance of surprising a lot of people including Steelers fans this year and I can’t wait to see it unfold here over the next several weeks. So let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. What’s your confidence level in Pittsburgh’s offensive weaponry as a whole? wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs heading into the year. Put it on a scale of one, meaning this this unit sucks. They’re absolutely terrible to 10 being this is the best offensive weaponry group in the National Football League. I have supreme confidence in this group. Let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section. And that’ll be it for today’s show, guys. Just a little bit of a reminder, though, uh we are going to be doing this uh 91,000 subscriber challenge uh by Friday. So, if you guys want to click that subscribe button, if we can get to that 91K mark by Friday, we will have a very special giveaway on the watch party on Sunday. So, if you guys want uh in-depth Steelers videos like we gave you guys today, uh make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already. Until next time, guys. Here we go, Steelers. 1. Your channel is all about views and clickbait headlines and subscribers. You don't really care about Steelers or Pittsburgh. It's all about building your channel.

  2. There's something good and something bad about the first game of the "real season!" If you win that first one you think you're on your way to the Super Bowl. If you lose you make excuses that the team needs time to build chemistry. One good thing about the Steelers? They have fans from everywhere. Steelers win this one 20-16. 🤞 🖤 💛

  3. Wow wasn’t expecting the jets to have a terrible O line, that could spell trouble for them that’s for sure!. OMG our defense line is going to eat that’s for sure. Go Steelers
