Dave Roberts on Smith’s Injury Update, Dodgers’ Series Loss & Searching for Answers at the Plate

Smith, how is he doing today, Dave? Or how is he doing just coming out of the game after taking that ball off his right hand? Um, from what I understand, he’s sore. Um, uh, there was some swelling. Got an X-ray. X-ray is negative, so that’s a positive. Um, daytoday. Um, but yeah, it’s going to be hard to imagine him in there tomorrow. Is he going to have to bring someone in potentially on standby or you feel good just with Dalton being the only? Yeah, we’re we’re we’re talking about it. Uh talking to the trainers and trying to see if uh it makes sense to bring someone. So, we haven’t made that decision, but most likely we’ll probably probably bring someone with this loss tonight just with the offense falling short. What were you seeing just from the at bats and uh falling short on just some key opportunities? Um, you know, I I I think um, you know, tonight, you know, you never want to uh say that one inning kind of win win or loses a game, but the second inning bases loaded. Um, nobody out. And I just felt we had two batted bats and, uh, didn’t come up with anything. we had the starter on the ropes and um had a chance to, you know, get a lead, get the starter out and um you know, building that inning was fantastic. I thought the bats, the taking of the walks and then we get to a position and we didn’t finish and and again I just think that you know there were a couple of bats there that just um I think that that flipped the game and it flipped the momentum and the neck the bottom half McCen hits a homer and you know and we just really couldn’t put anything else together. How much did that moment kind of loom the rest of the game too, especially with the other chances you guys had not being able to to cash in on? Uh, it looms. It it loomed and uh it still bothers me. Um, you know, I think the thing is that as we’ve been talking about is your first at bat could be your mo most important at bat of the game and it could determine the outcome of a game. And so, you know, we’ve got to collectively get all of us on board understanding that the magnitude of each at bat, each situation, and um and right now we’re not all there. We’re not consistently. And so, yeah, I mean, it it flipped the momentum, the game itself, and um you know, there’s a lot of guys that are still trying to take good at bats and win pitches and take team at bats. And you know, other times we’re we’re going away from that. And um it just it I mean I sound, you know, repetitive where it’s got to get better. And and it’s not easy. Hitting is not easy, but I do believe that having the right approach, the right mindset, the right urgency uh in our particular at bat bleeds to lends itself to better results. when you go to cash in that first chance because it sort of feel like you’re kind of pressing to make up for that chance by like swinging too big, getting too big in your approach when you guys do develop a chance later on, especially the next thing you guys blow the bases again. Yeah. No, you know what? I I I thought the next thing we load the bases and then I I thought Freddy hit a ball hard and it was a double play ball. Um, you know, got into a good count. So those things are going to happen, but I just feel that you start chasing and and you start, you know, it’s just at bad quality in in those situations has got to be heightened. It does. This we’ve heard so much about the talent in this lineup. How does this keep happening and the offensive production being what it’s been the last two months? Um, I I I think it’s just more of, you know, we’ve talked about team at bats and I I think that we’ve had some guys that have bought into that and and consistently are doing that and um yeah, I I just think that, you know, there’s it can’t draw dead um in a certain part of the order when innings are built. And um so I I mean, you know, to start innings, to build innings, to finish off innings, there’s a lot of kind of variables that go into scoring runs consistently. Um certainly if you’re not not just slugging and um so it’s a it’s a nuance answer. I don’t have the answer. Um, I I do believe that the guys that we have in the room are capable of putting together consistent team at bats of urgency um, from the first pitch on. Um, but at the end of the day, like I’m sure our players are e echoing the same message that we just got to get it done. I mean, I can talk about it as much as I want, but we got to get it done. That’s just the bottom line. And I don’t have an answer.

  8. this whole righties vs lefties platooning has not worked out. not sure why they brought back kim to sit on bench, and let freeland go on a strike out streak. his bat to ball skill would have been helpful in any of those 2 bases loaded innings.

  11. Think about this if the dodgers are waiting for muncy, they are definitely overrated as a team, I think this team is a prime example you can't buy a championship, no chemistry and it's obvious!

  15. Go back 3 months ago an its the same song nothing has changed. Why Roberts didn't send Mookie with as man on third. The pitchers never even looked at the runners. A billion dollar payroll an can't bunt or steal a base is insane.

  17. I really wanted the Dodgers to add Joe Maddon to the coaching group. He always had a great relationship with his players and had better ways of keeping his guys loose throughout the long season.

  20. Where’s the team chemistry, the so called leaders and / or the coaching? You would think the team would be looking for any opportunity to manufacture runs since we can’t seem to do it “ the Dave Roberts way”. Total crap and very disappointed that we just can’t play based on people earning the position they play. T Hernandez and Conforto continue to play no matter how bad they play. Great moral booster!

  36. This Dodger team is pathetic. Can't stand watching them anymore. They peaked the first week of the season and it's been downhill ever since. Expect an early vacation to Cancun in October.

  41. Many many months Roberts keeps saying need to play better. So change the lineup! Many many times & many many people are saying that Shohei should not be leadoff. Conforto should be benched. Teo should not play RF. So are you making these changes for the players to play BETTER??? No more standard answer please.
