Pistons Draft Chaz Lanier & Head To Summer League | Under The Hood S5E1
We’re going to take CH [Applause] [Music] like me. [Music] Ain’t no one like me. Ain’t no one like me. Like me. Ain’t no one like me. Ain’t no one like me. [Music] Never. [Music] Hey, we’re Yeah, we’re going to take Chad here. Yeah. From University of Tennessee. You got it. All right. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Thank you to all y’all. I appreciate all y’all. Um, like I said yesterday, if you here in this room with us, that mean you know I love you. My family love you and we appreciate your support. And man, it’s it’s it’s up from here. We like Chaz in the process. And I think once he uh there were some different things we looked at to getting in the first round, late in the first round, um the asks were pretty high. Um I think higher than any precedents in the past. So, we we knew he was our guy if he got to our pick and we were very fortunate to get him. Uh had him in for a workout, spent some time with him, got to do lunch. Uh we interviewed him at Chicago, watched a lot of film on him. Laneir pops one over Cibs. Boy, you can’t stop that. Lane with 10 first half points make it 13. Jazz Laneir’s feeling it right Phillips. Here is Laneir. That’s the last guy you want to leave. He is a sharp shooter. Doesn’t allow it. Chazier quick release. There he goes. Got another one. Thought it was foul. First of all, high character and a great young man. Obviously has really worked his way up, gotten better from North Florida to Tennessee and had a tremendous year this year in the best conference in the country. Um, but competitive, uh, can really shoot the ball, flies off actions, and had a tremendous year and like I said in one of the best conferences and one of the better teams in the country. Real family. Oh yeah. Yeah. We got We got to send them that picture. Oh yeah. Yeah. We real Look at that. That’s crazy, isn’t it? You got to get that. Wow. Who would have thought? Who would have thought? That’s wild. That’s wild. Has been through a lot. Uh nothing’s been easy. He’s worked his way up from North Florida to Tennessee and uh he’s really evolved his game through the years. Uh it’s not something that just came and he was a top 10 guy. So uh he’s worked his way here. Uh, and those are the kind of guys we like. They’re resilient, hard workers, super competitive. Uh, so, but I think he’s going to fit in here and and uh work his butt off to become the best version of Shazamir that he can. Now is the film. Uhoh. What we got? I don’t know if you’ve seen this. Oh, is this my name getting called? I told you in New York they knew it. So, somebody said my name that night. We’ve been here. Oh my gosh, it’s crazy. Oh lord, I’m Oh, don’t start crying. Don’t start. We already cried though. [Laughter] Oh, with the 37th in the 2025 round with the resistance elect. That’s so crazy. We never heard this. It’s the first time. Oh wow. I was thinking I was never going to hear this play. Never going to hear that. So that’s crazy. Should we watch it again? Yeah. One more time. One more time. [Applause] [Music] Yeah, I’m excited to see these young guys and obviously from Ron and Bobby’s perspective. Um, one year under their belts and and they’ve been here working really hard in the summer and I think they’re both really excited uh to go and compete and you know it’s a chance for them to to see if they can actually put on display what they’ve been working on. Uh, and then from Chad’s perspective getting in here and getting his first taste of NBA basketball on the on the NBA court. So excited for our group. Uh, I think we have a competitive group and I think it’ll be fun to watch here in a couple weeks. I had great interactions with everybody when I came out here to work out. Um, this is just a super great organization out here and um, the the few days that I’ve been out here has been amazing. They’ve treated me well, great hospitality and we just been getting after in practice. Turn the corner. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] MC. [Music] So, just real quick want to talk to you guys about, you know, this week coming up. a little bit of the stuff we touched on before we got out here, right? Is now all of you are representing the Pistons, right? And you guys that have been around us, you know that what that means to us and how serious we take that, right? Like we’re not asking any of you to be perfect, but we’re asking you to compete your asses off and play the game selflessly, right? And that’s what the Pistons do every night. No matter if it’s summer league, preeason, you know, February, whenever it is, like when we show up, teams expect that of us and that’s who we are and who we’ll always be. Okay? So, it’s most important that you guys celebrate that. When you’re not in the game, we expect you to be together. Uh you’re out here for a reason. This is a business trip. Let’s take care of business. All right. All right. First day touching down in Vegas, man. and just ready to get to work. Super anxious, excited to have my family out here and have them be able to watch me play in the NBA for the first time. Thinking a lot about my first basket, what that would look like. Welcome to the NBA 2K 26 summer league. And welcome back to sunny Las Vegas where we start another day of action here at the Thomas and Max Center. Tan Langden, the president of basketball operations with the Pistons joining us here. but very excited about the group that we have and obviously expectations have been heightened and raised and uh our group is excited about that. Um we got a lot of our vets here as you can see on the baseline and uh JB and his staff have done a tremendous job um you know setting this foundation now and going forward. That was really exciting to see them at the first game. We was all really going crazy. Me DJ Bobby Too the whole team really and uh we being able to look at the baseline and see our whole team sitting right there. That goes to show you what kind of team this this was and still is. Ball hoisted up and in by Chaz Laneir. We talked about it. He can shoot the basketball. He won the Jerry West award as the best shooting guard in the country last year. Points of emphasis for Ron Holland to improve that three-point shooting. Here he is and he knocks it down. Holland in traffic. Corner three. Good for Bobby Clintman. down. Yes, sir. Our main goal for summer league um summer league practices and games and pretty much just our Pistons culture. follow our Pistons culture, keep developing our Pistons culture, which is itself with basketball. Lo is playing together offensively and defensively. You know, we’re physical team. We want to bring physicality on defensive end. And that’s what coach GB bigger staff preaches. So, I think this is just going to be another way for younger guys to implement and shrinken those um strengthening those beliefs and style of Pistons playing. Yeah. Here we go. Oh yeah, DJ. Oh yeah, DJ. Lift, lift, lift, lift, lift. Hey, man. Here you go, Ryan. One more coming. Hey. But everybody know what Taz can do on the floor. But I feel like he fits on this team really well. His personality, his characteristics that he have, his leadership qualities, he’s definitely going to fit in with the team for sure. I used to wear two in college though, so I was like, I’m going just try and keep the two. Nell, I ain’t getting two. Get up. Good practice. We’re talking to JB Bicker Staff. He is the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. It’s a great time for some of our younger guys to assume larger roles like Ron Holland right now. Although he’s going into his second year with this team, he gets to be a leader. Uh, and so now like those are skills that you have to work on and improve on and this is an opportunity for him to get reps at that, not just the basketball piece of one thing that we liked about Ron when we took him is just the competitive nature, the work ethic and that he is about basketball. He he wants to be uh the greatest player that he can be. Um, and he puts the time and he puts the work in. He’s a great teammate. Uh, everything that we thought he was going to be, he’s been in this year that he’s been with us. And you talk about time in the gym, focused, intentional work with with Fred. Um, you can see the difference in his shot and it’s because he’s put the work in and he’s really paid attention and he’s wanted to learn. Like I’ve grown a lot. Um, I mean I took the summer um day by day getting in the gym every single day, working on my shot, working on I mean watching films, just learning the pace of the game and everything. Um, studying K game, studying how he what he sees on the floor and everything. And I feel like it’s definitely been helping me. I got to give credit to all the guys not only run that bring in the energy and physicality from the start season. There’s a three from Lenir. He can really stroke and he shot like eight threes per game last season at Tennessee. And he’s he’s open. I mean that’s going to come up with coach Jackson in the first timeout. Smith against Dante. Nice feed to Jenkins climbing the ladder. Yeah, great feed Dana Jenkins. Reed Shepard got caught watching the ball and Danish Jenkins just cuts right behind him. Great pass from Tou Smith in the air. got his man in the air and a soft touch from Chaz Laneir. Straight line drive. It’s Dana Jenkins again. He’s up to 14 leading the way for Detroit. Chaz Laneir is always ready to shoot. He was at North Florida. He was under Rick Barnes at Tennessee and he’s doing the same thing in Detroit. Dannis Jenkins. He said he’s really stood out to me in summer league action showing intensity guarding the ball, disrupting passing lanes and bringing energy on every single possession. And it’s been fun to watch him improve game to game. and he’s the head of the snake of this offense as you see him with the ball right now organizing the offense saying he set everyone for success on this squad. Nice driving finish by Dennis Jenkins. He’s averaging 20 and a half here in Summer League time with the Memphis Grizzlies for three. I told y’all he can shoot now. That that is no accident. Lintman well timed steps the D cell which you see a lot of players utilizing guys as Clinton makes a nice little drive to the basket. Premier guard in this lead. You got to be able to handle pressure and this is a great test like you said as Jenkins for a nice up and under scoop shot as Clement hits another three to put them up 88 to 66. Seen it all as makes a nice little pass to Clem for the jam. Nice little look up ahead by Jenkins. [Music] Last game. Excited. Excited to go out there and h with the guys one last time. Have fun. Let’s get this D and get up out of Vegas, man. [Music] to the final here. The Spurs finish summer league 4 and one. The Pistons finished three and two. It’s fun to coach you with guys starting two weeks prior the first training camp, you know, summer league practice you guys were in. It was good to see you guys getting better again in a short time. You guys be able to pro, you know, process what we want, what Pistons kind of basketball we want to play. I like the freedom of you. You guys did a good job playing together and let it fly. This is great to see everybody get good looks at the time. Basketball look beautiful when we play together. Okay. So, just want to say thank you very much personally for me. It was fun coaching. It was pleasure coaching. Here we go. Let’s go. Together on me. Together on three. 1 2 3.
