Milwaukee Brewers Manager Murphy STUNS Fans with Controversial Lineup Decisions

I want to see Durban at third base every day. You want to see Durban at third base every day. The manager doesn’t think so. We’ll get to that next here on Locked on Brewer. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On Network. Your team every day. Hey everybody, welcome to Lockdown Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. My name is Chuck Freeman, longtime sports cer in this terrific state of ours. If you live in Wisconsin, yes, this great state of ours, longtime sports caster, been here all my life, lived here all my life, and I always will be. So, good to have you along. Third-year host of Locked On Brewers. Coming up on the show today, Durban, we want him to play every day, third base, right? We want him there every game, no matter who’s pitching. Manager thinks it should be Sigler some of the times. We don’t think so. He thinks so. What does he know that we don’t know? We’ll get to that coming up here in a little bit. Bullpin injury. Murphy knows. He ain’t telling us. Probably on Friday we’ll know. And the Pirates playing the Pirates once again in a three-game series beginning on Friday night. We will get to that. This episode brought to you by FiveHour Energy. Five Hour Energy now is a chance to win a dream golf trip for two to any golf tournament in the United States. Visit 5hin.com for rules and entry. No purchase necessary. Excludes the Masters. Ends October 31st, 2025. Anytime Ziggler makes an out or makes an error over at third base, there’s a groan from Brewers Nation. I was at the game covering it Wednesday night. Ziggler made an error over at third base and you could hear the fans. They’re like, “Oh.” And it was more so because of frustration as to why is he over at third base and not our guy Derby. All right. Uh Durban is terrific. uh I I think over at third base uh better than I thought. Uh and here is the reason why Murf was asked this once again before the game on Thursday and sound like Murphy got a little agitated uh before the game. Uh because he’s asked this a lot. It’s because it’s the number one question I feel like on Brewers fans. Why Seagler’s getting any playing time when he got Durban over there. And there’s no question Durban is there. Murphy’s got his guys he likes. I think it’s easy to see that he likes Freelick, he likes Durban, and he likes Terra. He likes other guys, too, but you can tell those guys are his guys. All right, those guys are his guys. They’re all the same type of player. Hard nose will put their nose in the dirt. And what coach or manager doesn’t like that kind of guy? A guy who’s an overachiever and getting the maximum out of his talent? Those three exemplify it. So then why when Murphy is such a Durban fan, why is he playing Ziggler at all? He thinks Ziggler’s got a great upside. He loves his at bats. Now his batting average doesn’t show it. He’s hitting 194. But there was an article done by Kurt Hogue, Journal Sentinel, really analytical article on this and it talked about how Durban his weakness uh in the is on the inner half of the strike zone on breaking balls and there are certain right-handers that are just not good. And when Murphy uh good for Durban when Murphy talks about before game this guy’s just not a good matchup for for this player. Obviously there’s something in the analytics and the Brewers Murphy doesn’t go I mean he’s not head over heels over analytics but on some of the stuff he is. The analytics say Durban can’t hit certain hitters or pitchers and Aaron Nola the other night was one of them. Inner half breaking balls. Interesting. So, he runs Ziggler out there at third base when Ziggler’s not as good defensively. And I mean, I don’t remember the last time Ziggler’s got a hit. I’m sure as recently, but I don’t remember the last time Ziggler’s come up with a He’ll work the count. I I’ll give that to Ziggler. He’ll get up there and it’s not good morning, good afternoon, and good night. It’s not going down in three pitches. He’ll work the out sometimes. He’ll get strike he’ll strike out in three uh he’ll get he’ll strike out, but maybe it’ll be on seven or eight pitches. I don’t know. The Brewers see something there in Sigler that they feel is untapped right now. All right. I don’t know. I’d rather do that early in the season than when I’m trying to get the best record in Major League Baseball right now. But like I always say when some of you guys write me questions, and I’m going to tell you where you can do that here in a little bit. Can we question a guy who’s won 86 games, right? I mean, Murphy’s doing all the right things. He’s easily the manager of the year, not only in in the National League, but in baseball. But this is the one thing I think Brewer fans really it really sticks in their crawl and it does mine too as well. I mean, the Sunday lineup comes out or a weird line that comes out for the Brewers. I’m over that now. Although the lineup came out today with Freick Terang and we knew Yelich was gonna be out. I’m like, okay, you just roll with it. All right. Past I’d be breaking bobbleheads and all that, but I don’t do that now. Now, the one thing is though, I want to see Durban in there every day. I don’t give a I don’t I don’t give a care about Seagler. I’m not supposed to swear on this podcast and I didn’t. I caught myself. you’re not supposed to care um or you’re not I don’t care all that great about analytics. So, Ziggler is going to be for right now in there. It’s not cut and dry that Durban is in there against every lefty, although it seems to be. And then Ziggler is going to be in there against every right-hander. There’s going to be a few right-handers that Durban is going to be able to face. But Ziggler, certain matchups, they want Ziggler. The analytics say he’s got to be there ahead of Durban because Durban can’t isn’t good against the type of pitcher that he might be facing. One that throws on the inner half of the plate breaking balls has something to do with Dervin swing. Okay, that’s that’s that’s what I’m reading and that’s what I’m told. That’s what I’m told. But Murphy got a little defensive this morning. And you know what? He likes to put them these guys, these coaches and managers. I don’t know if you ever picked on it and picked up on it, but they all do it. They Lafleur loves to do it in Green Bay. Uh Murphy did it. Uh Murphy, uh McCarthy did it. Brewers managers council does it. They like to put the media out of the defensive so you don’t ask them. So you don’t press them certain things. managers and coaches in the state of Wisconsin love to love to do that. They love to intimidate the media and not that you know Murphy comes across a nice guy. He wants to know who everybody is and all that. That’s great. But there are certain things people won’t ask him because Murphy will sometimes turn it right back on you. Ned used to do that that stuff. I almost swore again. Um Ned Yos used to do that stuff. Council to a certain extent, you know, he just kind of grimaces and you don’t want to be that guy if you’re a media member when the manager is bristling at you. You know, you just never want to be that guy. You don’t want to end up on Sports Center as we say. Um but Murphy like this morning goes, “Oh, did something happen? You ever just question me about Ziggler?” Like he’s like baffled why we’re asking him about Ziggler. He’s just so stunned. That’s just a little act so we don’t keep on asking about it. That’s all that is. But you guys don’t care. You just he You just want the You want the team to win, right? Doesn’t matter. Want the team to win. But that’s it. Durban is not starting every game because there’s bad matchups apparently for him. Breaking ball, inner half of the plate, Durban is not good at. Okay, Brewers did lose two of three to Philadelphia. We’re all not happy about that. Two nothing on Thursday, man. Kept on thinking they were going to get the big hit. Second and third, nobody on. Couldn’t deliver. Second and third, nobody out. Couldn’t deliver. Oh, that was frustrating. You know, I’ll tell you something. these games, these last two nights, man, my head felt like it was going to pop off. I I was getting a stress headache today and sports is not supposed to do that. Watching these games is not supposed to do that. But I’m living, as I said in my short postgame report today, which I do after every game. I’m living and dying on every pitch like a lot of you guys out there. And I could tell you guys are because I I read your comments and I can hear it and I you know you you watch this every day and so you’re living every day with these guys like I am. But man today, man, I’m getting watching that game. It’s two nothing. I’m like, God, I’m exhausted by watching this game. Brewers put guys on. Oh, are they going to get this guy hit a runner or not? Or Oh, they’re working the count. You know, they work the count to 11 and 12 pitches sometimes and you’re living on every pitch and it’s like, my goodness, I noticed today. It’s stressful. It’s entertaining, but these games are stressful. Am I the only one who’s getting stressed out by watching these games sometimes? We got a nice lead in the division, four and a half or in in the National League, four and a half over the Phillies. It’s not clinched, but my goodness, Brewers are going to the playoffs. And I’m feeling like we’re right on the edge. Right on the edge. Pamps. They used him in the ninth inning. What’s the first time he’s pitched since May? I did not have a good feeling like that. I was like the Phillies I you knew that they’re going to add a run there and they did. two doubles, scored a run, clamps in his first outing as they dfed him and then they brought him back and he was in Nashville and they had to bring him up because they needed another pitcher with Miller out. Uh, two years ago I trusted Pamps. Last year I might have. Uh, no, I don’t have any faith in Pamps. No, let’s not trust this. This guy better not make the postseason roster. Just saying. Although the Brewers do have another injury in their bullpen as of late Thursday night, early Friday morning that we don’t know about. So maybe Pamps is going to be around for a little bit. I checked the live line when the Brewers were had ruers at second and third and nobody out. They were minus 450. In a span of like 2 minutes, they went from minus 450 to plus 110. That’s how quickly that inning ended for the next three hitters. Some of you are frustrated with Jansen. He’s seven of 38 since joining the Brewers. No homers, two doubles. didn’t lay down a bunt. Got runners at first and first put runners at first and second. Nobody out. Couldn’t get a run in that inning. Missed an opportunity. That was another missed opportunity. But the Brewers did not start Freelick Terang Yelich. I don’t get it. There was a lefty on the hill that I know. Suarez. Again, I’m going to stop stressing about that lineup. I don’t know. I don’t know how in in good conscience if you already know Yellish is going to be out. How you feel about Well, Yelich is going to be out so I’m going to just give Freelick and Terang the day off too. I don’t know. That would be a tough one to me. I’m sitting in the manager’s office and I’m writing my line up and say, “Oh my god today.” Well, Freelick and Ter Well, we got a lefty out. Yell is already yelled. So I think yeah, I’ll sit Free Lake and I’ll sit Terra. Those two are looking at each other and probably say, “What? We’re not in the lineup again.” I don’t know. Is that a hunch that those two weren’t going to be in? Yellish did miss again because the back they hope to get him back this weekend. Uh Murphy said it was a good day to rest Yelich probably obviously because the lefty is, but he arrested Freick and Turley Tang as well. later saw pinch hit spots, but man, you got to stop worrying about those lineups. I said I put out a tweet about that. Stop worrying about that. Jansen, back to that issue. I like Derek Hos better. I thought Jansen was going to come here and produce better than he is. Little bit better defensively than Hos and they feel he’s better offensively than Hos, but hasn’t shown it. Hasn’t shown it. Couldn’t get that blunt down. Got to get that bunt down. All right, we come back, we’ll talk about that mysterious bullpen injury and how it’s going to affect things. Get to that next. Good to have you along here on a Friday heading. That was a fast week, wasn’t it? Phillies were here. I mean, probably a long week for Phillies because they they’ve been in that hotel since Sunday night wherever they’re staying the Fister and uh you know, right after the game today, they get to the they get to the airport and get out of here. They’re not staying another night. Uh they’re going on to the next city. Meanwhile, the Brewers after their game tonight, they took off for Pittsburgh. We’ll talk about the Pittsburgh series coming up here in a little bit. All right. Uh the bullpin injury. One more thing I didn’t mention about Thursday’s game. Freddy Peralta, he’s now he’s now uh got 29 straight scoreless innings. Pitcher of the month in baseball in National League for August. Uh second best in franchise history. He’s chasing Teddy Hagera. 32 innings pitched. Um, Peralta moved in second place on that list, uh, ahead of Moose Hos, 28 innings pitched back in 1983. And I know some of you are looking and say, “What a funny name, Moose Hos.” Some of you guys who weren’t around in the 70s and 80s when Moose was a pretty good pitcher for the Brewers. Played on the 82 team. In fact, yeah, you can’t see it. I got an autograph picture from Moose Hass from when I was like 10 years old back here. Two Chuck Moose. Uh, but Mousas was a pretty good pitcher for the Brewers. Steady pitcher, not great, not bad, but he was above average. Mousas 28 scoreless innings back in 1983. So, Peralta moves ahead of him. 29 innings pitched. Peralta ran into that high pitch count. One of those innings he threw over 30 pitches. Peralta Murphy was asked about him after the game about running into the high pitch counts again. Murphy says it’s something that we’re going to have to look at in not short term. That’s a long-term thing. I mean, we’ve known about this for quite a while. So, I didn’t get what Murphy meant by that when he said this is a long-term thing to to fix that. Peralta has been struggling with that high pitch count for a long, long time. And that’s why even though he’s been pitching really well, he can’t go to the deep because he’s running it. I mean, he has the the messing around with hitters, but Murphy did say that’s what’s keeping him basically from superstardom. I think his terms were uh so the player that um could be headed for an injured list didn’t Murphy’s left us the guess guessing. He just kind of threw it out there after the game. Said, “Well, you know, we’re going to put a pitcher on the injured list. You can’t tell us who just yet. Interesting. Could it be Yoho? Could it be Mirrors? He said it was somebody who did not pitch in the game. Now, could be Ashby B. Kenny was up warming up. Who is it? So, we’re putting on somebody on the injured list. And that’s what the Brewers don’t need because then they got to run out pies. And I don’t think any of us want to see P. Nobody felt comfortable with pamps going on in the ninth inning. Not one person. felt that he was going to pitch a scoreless ninth inning. Not one of us. He did hold it to one run. I thought it was going to be worse. But man, tough spot for Pints coming at top of the ninth inning, one- nothing against the Phillies. We were trying to prevent from catching you to get that top seed. But that’s where the Brewers are at this point. So many injuries again with Shelby Miller going out the other night likely to Tommy John. Yoho’s on this team. Didn’t look great at the major league level. Worked on a few things he’s done down at the minor league level. He looked great in the in spring training. The ball looked great, but it did not translate. He became very hitable at the major league level. So, who is it? Who’s the injured player? Is it going to be Mirrors? Is it going to be Fetty? Is it Yoho? Brewers cannot afer afford it. But by process of elimination, what Murphy said and our guessing messes, Fetty or Yois, probably one of those three guys who are going to go the injured list. We’ll find out more on Friday, probably late Friday when the Murphy meets with the media before the game in Pittsburgh. Uh good news on Trevor McIll. He’s on track to come back September 16th. He’s on path. He’s doing good in his rehab. Like we’re always talking about guys on rehab. And we talk about the Brewers more guys who are on rehab all year long with the Brewers. I mean, just it’s a constant cycle of guys more so than I’ve ever seen it before. And yet this team has got 86 wins. Somebody asked me about Tobias Myers. Chuck I and some of Brewer Nation is soured on Tobias Myers. I get it. And he gave up the run in the seventh inning. He gave the the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. And I I understand 180 that Brewers Nation has done on Tobias Myers. Loved him last year when he was the pitcher of the year. Now obviously you’re holding your breath when he comes into the ball game, but might be a guy we depend on in long relief in big spots in the postseason. I’m just telling you the bias Myers might be down to that. And it it’s weird to say that we might might be down to that because he was high on the confidence level of all of us last year. There’s a reason why they put him down in the minor leagues. There is a reason why he’s he was spent most of this year in the minor leagues. All these games are tough, man. They’re all tough. The Brewers have just one remaining opponent that has a playoff spot right now. So all the teams that they play right now remaining on their schedule. Only one team if the season ended now are still in are in the postseason and that would be the Padres’s. But I don’t look at it like that. All these games are tough. They’re all tough. The Pirates are going to battle them this weekend. The Pirates are certainly going to battle the Brewers this weekend. But the Pirates are going to be tough. And I’m going to tell you why. Winning teams that go to Pittsburgh since the managerial change there. The Dodgers are find found that out quick this past week and a lot of other teams are well. The Pirates are doing well against winning teams at home. We’ll tell you about that next here on Lockdown on Brewers. 5Hour Energy. I take 5Hour Energy about 10:00 a.m. every day. Ends October 31st, 2025. And uh they’ll have all the rules on there. All right, the Brewers face the Pirates, as I mentioned, first of three. What I do like about them playing in Pittsburgh, other than the fact that they usually win in Pittsburgh, is the fact that they’re earlier games. I love the earlier starts. 5:40 start in Pittsburgh. You know, when they play in the East Coast, they always play those earlier starts. So, they used to be 605 in Pittsburgh. Now, it’s 540 starts in Pittsburgh. Uh, and that’s it’ll be Friday. 540 start on Friday. Uh, the pitching rotation for the Brewers in these three games, Prister, Woodruff, and Miserowski. Um, Ovida was going to pitch for the Pirates in game one. Keller in game two, TBD to be determined in game three. That’s what I have anyway. But this OTO big kid 66 well 260 or so big kid uh has pitched well in his last three starts had Tommy John was out for 2024 and um Brewers will face him. They’ll miss skins because skins ran into the Dodgers and shut them down on Thursday night. So, we won’t see Skins. But, you know what? We’ve beaten Ski anyway twice, right? So, here’s the deal. The Pirates, there’s they’re 64 and 72, but there’s 42 and 30 at home. And get this, since they made the managerial switch, they have won 21 of their last 26 games at home. 21 of their last 20 uh this is what this is what it is. They’ve won 21 of their last 26 at home against teams with winning records, which is even more scary. They play well against teams with winning teams. Um the Dodgers just got swept at a three-game series this week. Really, two of those games were non-competitive by the Dodgers. The other one was a sloppily played 97 Pirates win. But the fact is the Pirates swept the three-game series from the Dodgers. Brewers a couple of weeks ago swept the three-game series from the Pirates at Anfan Field. In fact, dominated that series. But the Pirates apparently when nobody’s watching, which would be PNC ballpark. The Pirates, no pressure at all, they’re at home. They are winning. They are winning games against teams with winning records. Again, they have won 21 of their last 26 against teams with winning records. And of course, Brian Reynolds hit a home run the other night. Bad news about Friday night’s game, it’s not going to be on FanDuel. It’s going to be on Apple TV. I get it. I’ve ranted about that before. So, if you’re out and about and maybe you’re going out for a fish fry on a Friday night or going to a bar, make sure they have Apple TV. if you’re planning on going to watch the game. Otherwise, golf or something will be on the TV. But, yep, it will be on Apple TV. That’s going to do it for the show. 2. chuck did you watch the game meyers hit that scored the run was a splitter almost in the dirt.. sometimes a great hitter hits a great pitch.. get the guys healthy.. pirates dusted the dodgers which helped us so just let it play out ..

  3. I love Murph but this loss is 100% on the Coach. You can’t handcuff the team by sitting our two best hitters while our 3rd best hitter just happens to be out with an injury. If either Sal OR Brice play the Brewers are up 6.5 games not 4.5 games for the #1 seed.

  4. If Turang or Frelick (both 25) need a rest so bad, why not wait a day once we are playing an inferior team like the Pirates. And I’m so over the matchup excuse. I’m not buying that rolling out some .180 right handed hitters is a superior move to letting your left handed .300 hitters have a crack at the lefty. Not to mention the superior fielding that Sal and Brice offer over their replacements. These “Sunday” lineups are playing with fire if the goal is to get the #1 seed. Like Chuck has said before, we don’t want to back into the playoffs playing .500 baseball.

  5. @chuckfreimund Chuck, you have to be the one to stir the pot with Murph. Ask him the tough questions no matter how uncomfortable it is for him or you. It helps the team and the coach if Murph isn’t surrounded by YES men. Murphy holds the players accountable when they make a mistake because he knows as much as it may be unpleasant it will make the players better in the long run. Murph needs his feet held to the fire too to make him better also. Be the villain Chuck! For the love of the Brewers.

  6. You can't sit Turang and Frelick at the same time, against a very good team, after just having Tuesday off day. Bad lineup management there unless they were injured. Seigler needs to stop being run out there. IMO

  7. We can buy players like Bader who hit .300 and can cover the outfield well. Sorry but this is how our season will probably end. It’s moneyball folks, mlb needs a salary cap IMO. This is exactly what I’ve been commenting about for the past season. Our margins are so thin, it would be a miracle to win in the big dance

  8. Didn't Myers have a great start vs Mets in the Play-offs?
I only remember Payamps because his failure to cover 1st base open the flood gates and we lost the game because of him.

  9. Frustrating that the Brewers put out that lineup Thursday with a lot on the line. You don’t see the Phillies sitting 3-4 guys because they know these are big games.

  10. Leftover CC Overthinking is infiltrating Murphy's bad decisions. Yesterday was ridiculous, down Yelich he takes out the next best players because they are LHers? Turang .295 Vs LH, Frelick .297 Vs LH, so he takes them out in the biggest regular season game left on the calendar? It was a disservice to Freddy, the fans and the team. Sal needs to be leadoff, always. Move Turang to 2 and he can be the next Robin Yount with a Paul Molitor type batting in front of him. Ugh

  11. I really wish I didn’t care about this team. They just don’t seem to know how to get to that championship level. All they do is tease the fans during the year, then fizzle out when it’s most important. Welcome to the wild card series, either way another early exit.

  12. Durbin is a rookie powerhouse. NOT playing Durbin when he's healthy, is a HUGE mistake. Seigler belongs in a farm league or selling peanuts in the stands.

  13. I remember another Brewer manager that seemed to make decisions to spite common sense and reporters….. SOUP pitched great! still in first place… still in first place….

  14. I feel like this has been an ongoing theme all season long and at times during the win streak it felt like the team pulled through in spite of the lineup rather than because of it.

The same thing is true for Joey O and Monasterio at short or Vaughn and Bauers at 1B and super prominently when Collins is taken out of LF where he is most dominant to replace Sal in RF who is also not playing for some reason or another.

And I get we’re coming off of a lot of precarious injuries that we’re trying not to aggravate and that health in October is ultimately going to be more important than health in September.

But when it comes at the cost of entertainment value and arguably more importantly what can be felt right now, team morale, then I feel like that is going too far.

These guys are trying so hard, gritting their teeth and digging their heels in trying to win but you’re not giving them the best chance to do that when you’re not fielding the people who play most consistently at the positions where they play most consistently.

  15. No more Siegler, Durbin only. Bring Rhys Hoskins back. For the bullpen being tired out, I don’t know what to do. I hope Megill can be ready for the playoffs.
