People like to pretend Stephenson is the without a doubt starting catcher, star player that the reds are refusing to give the contract he deserves.
Not worth it honestly ( and I like him)
We have him through 2026, but the problem is that Trevino is also locked in until 2026. Alfredo Duno is a long way away, probably 3 years, could be longer, he is only 19. He might start in Dayton next year. So we have a a gap in our catcher development with a bunch of minor league catchers and people are freaking out if we dont sign Stephenson to a new deal to bridge the gap between him and Duno. Catchers arent cheap, we saw what backup guys were getting this year and the market wont be any better going forward.
I’d put it at a 75% chance he gets traded this offseason. They tried to extend him last offseason, and word was the sides were far apart. Catchers are damn near impossible to trade at the deadline. Most of the pitchers seem to prefer Trevino behind the plate, and the team seems to be seeing more value in his defense that Stephenson’s offense.
I know an offseason trade leaves them with needing to find someone else to back up Trevino, but I think they’ll go outside the org to bring someone in and get what they can for Stephenson in the offseason.
I like Stephenson. But I think he’s overrated, given his defensive issues. While the hype around him isn’t huge, it’s enough to make him more expensive than he’s worth. I wouldn’t be disappointed in the Reds if they can’t sign him, and I wouldn’t blame Stephenson for getting a paycheck based off of his hype. Teams typically will pay more for offense than they will for defense.
I think Reds pitchers like pitching to him. But I also think opposing pitchers like pitching to him.
Stephenson is done in Cincinnati. I respect him, but his hitting has never developed as we hoped and he is rather ordinary defensively and in handling pitchers. As for next year, we need to see if Duno is ready. I disagree that he is ‘years away’ away from the majors. If he shows he is ready during Winter Ball, then they should give him a fair shot in the spring. And there is no one better to learn from than Trevino.
Stephenson is perfect for the reds
If we extend Ty then I know this team isn’t serious. He’s not worth it in the batters box and definitely not worth it behind the plate.
