New Dallas Stars forward Nathan Bastian joins the show! | DLLS Stars

not ready. So, perfect. Was that live when you pointed at me? Heck yeah. All right, we are here. We are live. Most importantly, we are still here after Luds and I did our Friday show and we’re not fired for it. There’s nobody else I would fill in. Nobody else was here to fill it. But we have a big show today. It is what? Tuesday. We are doing an awesome show. We’re bringing new Dallas Stars forward. Nathan Bastion will join us in about 15 minutes. But more important than that, it’s big brothers big sisters week here. And we want to rack up the donation. So today and this week, we have replaced our super chat button there in YouTube with a donate button. So go there right now and throughout the show, donate. As an all city network, we’re trying to hit 50,000 in donations. And you know, it’s always nice when DLS and specifically DLS stars comes up first. So let’s get those donations rolling in and let’s get this show rolling. to Sam Nestler, Craig Lewig. Let’s get it started. [Music] [Music] to the DLSS Dallas Stars podcast. And before we start this show, I want to let you guys know that Craig Lewing and I walked into the studio today wearing this shirt, the same shirt. He went into GM Ben’s office and made him give him another shirt so he could change so that he wouldn’t be matching me on today’s show. And I’m very disappointed about it. Do you know how many comments we would have had if we were sitting here with a little otter? The both of us otter on the same pants. Yeah, we we dodged a a curveball there, but exciting show today. So, what we’re going to do is, as I mentioned, we have new Dallas Stars forward Nathan Bastion joining us for the second segment for a little bit. Before that, I took uh some time last week to get some questions from you dieards. So, we’re just going to start right with that. No messing around here. Get right into some of your questions. And if you have some more questions, throw them in the chat. If you donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters and have a question, that’s even better. So, LSDs, you ready to start? Yeah. Right now, Luds has to stop saying, “Don’t say it out loud.” Oh, it doesn’t say. Oh, yeah. I do. There is a letter. Okay. All right, LS, let’s start with the first one that was in the chat, which is your boy Andrew Leonard, the uh your trainer for the alumni team. He asked first four comments. Yes. He asked for specifically for you, Craig Lewig, what is the one thing you miss about playing hockey professionally? I’m going to give the standard answer. I I think anytime I’ve ever heard a former player, and it’s not just hockey, and I guess the big word is camaraderie. You miss the guys. I mean, and I tell our players, our U8 kids, when they come to the rink and you know, they’re a lot of them are in school, they do the whole online thing, whatever. But when when you guys walk through those doors, the outside world shouldn’t exist. And this is your hour and a half to just concentrate on one thing. And and part of that is the guys. I mean, you you spend eight, nine months a year with those guys, you know, and you’re on the road and um you come home. And one of the things that I never did is I’m getting off topic, but you either the idea was when you’re moving here, when you’re moving someplace, you either live by the practice rink or you live by the airport because those are the places you spend most of your time. And I would always ask, “Where are you staying at? Where you guys, you know, where are you? Where are you?” And I’d be in just the opposite spot. I I I felt that I was with them enough on the road and in the locker room and things like that when I go home, I want to be able to go to my own little places by myself. And then unfortunately, I mentioned it a couple of the wrong guys, then everybody else ends up there. But but it’s it’s all about guys. It’s all about your teammates, you know, and and getting to know their families and all that kind of stuff. So that’s what you miss. And I and that’s why I see guys when they’re after games, you know, you you’re leaving and they’re sitting all down there in the wise lounge and things like that and they’re all hanging out having a beer and stuff like that. So long answer, but it’s it’s it’s the guys the room. Yeah. All right, moving on. This is from the Texas Zip. Is it possible for a player, say Tyler Sean, to renegotiate a contract and increase cap space? Do you know the answer to this question? Well, I do now. Do you want to explain it? I’m gonna I’ll hand that over to you. No, I cannot explain it. All right. So, I actually didn’t know the full answer. I I had an idea, but I had to look it up for specifics. The answer is no, unless you get full league approval, which basically the way they wrote it was that’s never going to happen unless there’s some bizarre circumstance. So, um the only ways they can do it is a buyout or a mutual termination between player and team. So, no, Tyler Sean’s not going to walk into Jim Nil’s office when he gets here and say, “Take four million off of my uh salary cap so we can sign another player.” Basically, which I think is the reason for that question there. So, thanks for that one. Texas Zip. Um, next, another one from Texas Zip. We’ll go to this one right away. Who might the Stars be looking at at the deadline to round out the team? You know, for me it’s hard to answer that because I think you have to take your first 20 or 30 games of the season and see where you are. Y for for me and excuse me, we were we were talking about this morning. I came in here this morning and I had little numbers and there’s pockets by each line. I’m like, who fits here? Who fits there? And I think right now, you know, we keep talking about a a second line or a top six left winger and and so my the easy answer would be to say I would have to believe that that’s a spot they’re looking for because you can look and and you have it too. You have Matt Duchain playing on the left wing. I don’t think it’s a good spot for him. I’m not saying a good spot. I’m not saying that Matt can’t do it. I think it takes away from his creativity and his playmaking ability through the middle of the ice. But if that’s what’s going to happen, that’s what’s going to happen. So, um, that would be the spot right now. I think you’re looking for a a top six winger. Um, right now, unless somebody pops up in the next, then you mentioned Maverick Bourke. Can Maverick Bourke jump up there. Maybe if Maverick gets a steady diet and an opportunity with with Glenn Gullixson and to be able to give them more than two shifts or give them more than two periods, give them more than two games, give them five games, give them eight games. Let’s see what Maverick can do. But then again, he’s a right winger for the most part, right? We keep looking for that left winger. So, I just think that right now they’re going to have to start the season where they’re at and they’re going to be constantly monitoring everything else that’s going on. Yeah, I think internal growth is huge this year to see who because they might not that might be a weakness, but there might be a bigger weakness. And you know what I always do is I dismiss players that are down in the American League. Yes. And you know them better. Is there somebody there? You guys have mentioned a couple guys that you think they don’t know. It’s hard because they, you know, they’re AHL rookie of the year just like Mav was AHL MVP, but you never know when that’s going to translate. So, exactly. You want to say yes, but you just don’t know the answer. So, all right, let’s move on. We have a question from Russ for you, Luds. Luds, have you been have you ever been approached to be an assistant coach? I personally believe you would be a tremendous asset to a defensive group in the NHL. Well, there was one year um going back to when I think it was when Hitch came back again that somebody upstairs told me I needed to go and tell them you want to be it. And I’m thinking, well, somebody wants me to, they can ask, but I don’t I don’t think you go and do that. Um obviously I think about it. I I don’t know about a coach. Um I I know I work with, you know, the 17, 18 year old kids, and I always say there’s a different mentality with the players today. Um, but I kind of I feel like I could help and you’ve heard me say this before in like a a defensive coordinator kind of thing. Um, but then the other thing is is to be able to spot in the in the course of a game, you know, we’ve talked about Pete Dbor now since he’s been gone, but having the ability and maybe more the willingness to change during during games because adjust to what another team may be doing and be able to spot that and change on the fly, but those are things that have to be practiced, too. You can’t just all of a sudden call down and say, “Hey, listen, they change your fore.” And if you don’t practice how you break out then, you know, so um but yeah, I you know, there there’s times I I think that I could, you know, help and and see those kind of things and and be able to correct it. And the other thing is I think you can especially with defenseman, the young ones, you know, little little details and things like that. And sometimes I think some players, not just defenseman, sometimes they try too hard and you don’t have to, you know what I mean? You kind of overry. Anyway, but there’s enough smart people there. They don’t need a another one like me. All right, moving on. Let’s let’s get to this. So, we’ve been asked about this a few times. We’re going to hit it quickly here. Why not? It was asked. So, uh from Clarettes, I think is how you say it. What were y’all’s thoughts on the USA Today Texas Youth Hockey article? What are you talking about? I know it hasn’t been spread around at all, right? Oh, man. Let me let me say this first. So, we we were going to bring this on the show, but we wanted to bring both sides. We didn’t want to bring on someone just from the stars to talk about their side. We didn’t want to bring in someone just from the obvious opposing side. We wanted to get both and that didn’t really pan out to get it that way. So, why don’t we just quickly say what what are your thoughts on the whole situation? Well, to be fair, since you brought that up, it was one of the stars employees that reached out, correct? And said, “Hey, maybe it’s time for, you know, to come on and, you know, share share our side of the thing, which Sam’s right. There needs to be somebody here to be able to go back and forth.” Yep. Um, I’m in the I’m in I’m kind of in that and and so trust me, I hear it. I I hear a lot and we’ve got a couple players that are on our U8 team now and they’re, you know, there’s a couple parents that, you know, and they’ve already signed the papers and they’re already part of it, but they’re like, I’m not sure how am I going to make this payment at this time. And but that being said, I can only speak for our level. They know coming in what the cost is, what kind of money you have to have in a little kitty. In other words, if something something happens and your kids’s on the road or your kid needs a new pair of skates or a stick and they have to go grab it, which they shouldn’t because they got plenty of them here. Um, you know, so it’s all laid out for them. It doesn’t make it easy for them. But um but again it ultimately comes down to ice price I think you know and and when the ice prices keep on going up the cost has got to go someplace right and and so it it is hard and it’s difficult I don’t have the answers to it um I had the luxury of when our U8 team started um we had a very very generous uh man that was part of our organization had his son as a player played with my twins and out of his own pocket, um, he put in a big chunk of money to start the season, which lowered the cost for all the parents every year that he was here. Now, those I guess you could call him a sugar daddy. Yeah. But he was he was he’s a great dude. Um, and but anyway, um, you know, that doesn’t happen, but but there’s no question it’s a it’s an expensive sport. Yeah. And that’s the thing. That’s where I stand in the middle, and that’s why I I didn’t know exactly where to go with it. that I know Robert Tiffen wrote an article. I think Sean wrote a little bit about it and it’s all kind of saying the same things and that’s that we we don’t like to see the stories that come out. Nobody likes to see someone get exposed or get taken advantage of. But we also don’t know the markets well enough in other places to understand whether the prices are just out of this world or whether that’s just kind of the way youth hockeyy’s been going. So for me, I’m I’m I’m on both sides with you guys. I I I understand I I’m so thankful for the Dallas Stars and what they’ve done for youth hockey here. starting with when you guys won, that was a big part of it. Um, but you also want to make sure that the the people that are here are able to play the sport. It’s an expensive sport. You you can’t get away from that. But the people that are here want to be able to play the sport and be able to not feel like they’re going to be taken advantage of or feel safe. So, that’s where we stand on it. That’s our short answer for it. Yes. Ryan, you want to knock out a break and bring in Nathan? Yes. Is he ready? He’s ready. All right. What’s up? I’m good. How are you guys? Good, good. Thanks for joining the show. Let me uh let me just start off and ask you a real simple question. Yeah, why don’t you have a beer in your hand? That wasn’t the question, but how’s your summer going? How’s the adjustment? And are you excited to uh get down here to Dallas? Uh summer was good. Um I feel like we say it every year, but it just it just seems to go by so fast. Um I’m sure the boys who actually played here last year think it was even faster. I mean, they didn’t I guess they didn’t wrap up till sometime in in June. Um, yeah, summer was great. Um, little bit different summer for me being obviously being a free agent and going through uh pretty much well knowing I wasn’t going to go back to the same city that I went back to for the last bunch of years, but um ended so well and so excited and I’m already down here now. So, um, everything’s been great. Well, Nathan, how about if we start with me with a little about you? Um, you have a family. Are you married? Uh, where do you spend your summers? Things like that. Um, yeah, I have a uh maybe we’ll call her a very long-term uh partner. Uh, we’ll get there at some point. Um, good for you. Good for you. Yeah, that’s He ain’t gonna like to hear that. No, it’s coming. Uh yeah. Uh we live uh my parents live outside of Toronto. Um we uh got a little spot um north of Toronto now, so we kind of live in like cottage country, uh in Ontario. Um we’re set up there where there’s enough hockey guys there and I can work out and train and do everything I need to do for the whole whole summer and live on the lake at the same time. So um definitely definitely enjoy our summers now. That’s for sure. Let me let me let me follow up with that and because you mentioned, you know, a little different for you. Why Dallas? Like why was that your choice? Um well, I think a lot of things go into it that a lot of people maybe on the outside don’t understand. Um for me in my role, it’s it’s so so valuable to me to play on a good team and it’s so exciting to be a part a part of a good team. I think that um with the team success comes success uh kind of further down the lineup and a little bit more appreciation for guys like me and you know playing playing the playoffs is the most important thing. Um all the other stuff is just kind of gravy. I mean uh the weather and and the city and being the you know whether it’s being in the US or or or whatever it is. Um, Dallas is a team that for most players just seems to check all the boxes and I would say it’s the same thing for me. Nathan, I I noticed you had a a rough injury last year. I believe it was a broken jaw, right? So, uh, one, you’ll fit in perfectly down here because Dallas loves wearing the full bubble. I think they had about 10 of them last year. But on a more serious note, ju that we know that a little bit about facial injuries. We’ve seen a couple broken jaws down here. Can you just take us through kind of that whole process for you recovery, the injury, and getting back to I think you came back roughly in the spring. Yeah, that was probably actually the toughest injury I’ve ever had. Um I think I had the option to either do a surgery and put some sort of a plate in my jaw that would um obviously if you can avoid going under the knife, you don’t want to do that. But option B was to go have my mouth wired shut. Um, I think it was like three maybe four weeks. But the experience of like just not eating and just trying to drink my calories and um I it’s such a crazy injury because your mouth is wired shut, but you’re in the gym two days later and you’re like on the ice skating around and you can’t really breathe, but you’re trying to like stay sane. I mean, like if you hurt your knee, like from from personal experience, um, you know, at the end of the day, you can still order a good meal and put your feet up and, you know, jump on Xbox or watch a show or something and it’s enjoyable, but when you can’t really breathe or like talk or like smile or like anything, it’s just like such a It was such a frustrating thing to go through and um, knock on wood, hopefully hopefully I don’t have to deal with that ever again. What was the biggest challenge when you did come back? Was it the breathing and getting back to kind of that pace? Was it conditioning? What was the biggest challenge to get in? And did you have to come in kind of right before the playoffs? Um, no. I had a good amount of time before I played again. The biggest honestly the the biggest thing was probably only switching to the full face shield to be honest. like um you you skate so long on your own and then all of a sudden with my injury it was like it’s a it’s just like a bone, right? So it’s not like a it’s not like uh an ease back into play. It’s not like I had like a hamstring or something where it’s like or a concussion where it’s like these are the steps. It’s just like okay now you can get hit in the jaw now you can play. So, it was like all of a sudden, like the same day that I was thrown into practice, the next day I was thrown into a game and and in this league, you don’t really have enough time to to, you know, put your toes in the water. You’re just you’re you’re thrown in the fire right away. And um the trans the transition back I personally didn’t think was was too bad. Hey, Nathan, you mentioned uh you mentioned about being important to play on the team that fits your style, and I know what you’re talking about, but I want you to explain it why this is the right kind of team for what your style is and how your style lends to this team. Well, I think, you know, maybe I’m a little biased, but as you get down the stretch in the playoffs, I think it helps to have big guys. I think, um, not to like pump my own tires, but I think in the past, I’ve I’ve played some of my best hockey in the playoffs. Um, there’s things that go into the role that I’m going to take on that, um, you know, the media wouldn’t pick up on. And and there’s, you know, if if I’m a I’m a I call I would like to think I’m a pretty realistic guy. Like you look at the forward group, there’s going to be nights that, you know, maybe I’m not in the lineup and and that’s not an easy thing to handle as a player. And I like to think I’m pretty good at that. Like that, you know, those there there’s days that I’m not going to be playing and you just have to find ways to add value to the group without being being an anchor, you know. Um, so for me, like, uh, goes without saying that you just come in and you just try and, um, jump on board, right? You just try and help in areas where wherever you can help and be the best teammate you can possibly be. And, um, when the time comes, hopefully I can bang one in the back of the net. Are you familiar with some of the players here already, Nathan? Uh, a little bit. like you see so many guys in passing all the time. The second I signed, I probably had 10 guys reach out to me. Um I had a dinner with Wyatt uh last weekend and then I say the same thing to everyone like you’re even if you’re not familiar, it’s going to be like three days in and it’s going to feel like you have like 23 new best buddies. It’s it’s it’s a super it’s super easy. Did that go into your decision at all? I know that I mean maybe this is just a bias being down here, but all you hear down here is how welcoming this city is, this organization. Very, very easy to adjust to and a lot of players come in and just fit right in. Did that come into play at all for your decision? Um, you know what, like before before July 1 even came, if I was sitting around with my buddies and we said hypothetically, if you could go anywhere, where would you pick? I would say Dallas. like I would honestly say Dallas. Um you know, such a fun team to watch. Um so promising. I can’t wait to just wear a sweater in the winter. Like there’s just so many things that go into it. And like I said earlier, first and foremost, playing on a good hockey team. Um you know, hopefully I’d like to think that I can be kind of adaptable like regardless of what team style of play. I’d like to think I could find ways to chip in and help out. Um, I don’t know exactly what the plan is on on uh, you know, how they would use me here, but um, that stuff kind of comes out in the wash and it’ll be sorted out when we see uh, training camp. Well, I know what the need is here. I mean, I I’m I’m hoping that that’s uh, what’s gone into the thought process with with bringing you in here. Um there’s no question and and I don’t know if you you probably don’t even know this but it was some point halfway through the season last year Pete Dbor had made a comment and and we I don’t know if the season was halfway maybe 60 game mark but he made a comment about he thought that the team needed to be a little bit bigger on the walls. In other words, we need some size. And and so when I look and it kind of takes me to the the best thing that I saw was and I’ll ask you about the 2122 season about the expansion draft and all that other stuff, but that that season you played a total of 72 games or so I believe is what it was. You had 12 goals in the season, right? And it kind of tells you a little bit more about who you are, but you had about 225 hits, you know, when you put it together. and you average that over the course of year in an 80ame thing and I think that’s the piece that this team needs and I have to believe that that’s been probably communicated with you know because besides Lean Bishell who you know I’m sure you know of or and Leon as a young defenseman you know he can he can bring that in the back end but there really is nobody up front that does that and I think we need more of a steady diet of that so that’s a big piece to what you’re doing. Correct. Yeah. I would say I would say comfortably if I if I hadn’t accepted that by now, I don’t know if I’d be in the league anymore. So, I’m I’m old enough now. Um that doesn’t even really need to be communicated to me. That’s that’s my shtick. And um as you guys know, it’s not the the prettiest, but I take pride in that. So, uh, you better believe that if Wyatt’s checking the score sheet to see how many assists he had that night, I I’m looking at the hit column to make sure it’s not a goose egg. Yeah, I I will say that. Pretty pretty No, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So, it looks pretty pretty good to me. Is that what Wy is that what Wyatt told you at dinner, Nathan? He’s telling you about his checking assist. What was the What were the conversations like? Uh we we chatted a little bit beforehand. I wanted to um make sure I was just pulled up the Google Maps and just made sure that I’m living in a good enough area. And uh I don’t know how well you guys know, but he’s pretty quiet. He’s like softspoken. He’s like the most humble kid I’ve ever met. So um early impressions uh didn’t get too much out of him, but um I’m sure we’ll get closer as the season goes on. And have you spoken to Glenn Golson at all yet? Yeah. How did that conversation go? Uh, it went really well. It was like it was super it was super refreshing. um not in a not in a negative way like uh to kind of you know make a an image of what my past experience has been like but to speak to him to speak to a head coach for the first time and him to just ask me about my family and my girlfriend and my dog and living and other stuff other than tell me you know I’m going to need to you know finish my or whatever it is right like it was a really nice um get to know him. Um you know, he’s he’s a he’s a person, too. Obviously, he’s my boss, but um it was a it was a great uh chat and I’m sure the next time I see him, it’ll be more a little bit more hockey related, but it was very get to know you surface level stuff, which was like I said, it was pretty refreshing for a first chat. See, you started our conversation with him today asking about that stuff. So, you’re Craig Lewig is in in good in your book, eh? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Um, so I I’m I’m curious, Nathan, like I I brought up the 2122 season. I kind of Can you take Can you take us through that, you know, and people don’t know, you got picked up in the expansion draft, right? You go to Seattle and then what were you there for? Dozen games, 20 games or so? Uh, maybe 20, I think. You correct me if I’m wrong. I think I played in like maybe half of those. Um it was play played 12 that year for Seattle. Okay. Yeah, I would have been I think I would have been an extra for at least Gez I was leading the franchise in hot tub minutes for sure for a little bit there. Um I I don’t I I’m not really sure what to say about that experience. I think it was pretty humbling how quick um this could all come to an end. Obviously, it didn’t, but um the expansion itself was when you’re looking at the names um only team teams only had certain guys that were actually available. So, um they quickly like with my agent uh signed me to like an extension in Jersey uh right before the expansion just to make me eligible because they needed a certain amount of guys to be eligible. But then if you looked at the options, it was either me or like another guy who was making like a ton of money at the time. So I think maybe somebody could tell me in the organization. I I don’t know. I think I was kind of like the best worst option like because they have to take a player from each team, right? Like I don’t I don’t think I was ever really in the plans. Um so not to say like I didn’t get an opportunity. I still played games and stuff, but the second that I got there and they were healthy cuz um Yanni Gourd uh started on the IR and then me and Blackie at Blackwell, sorry, actually had a laugh about this the other day. I think Blackwell coming off the IR was my final nail in the coffin. I think that was the day I got waved and I saw it from a mile away. Like I was like like I’m like you’re you know you guys drafted like 20 forwards like and it sucked for me because I could see that I wasn’t really in the picture and I got kind of ripped away from such an amazing situation in New Jersey and all of a sudden it went from having like a legitimate like NHL role on a team to just like yeah we just had to take someone. That’s kind of what it felt like. And then next thing you know, I’m in Seattle. And then um there was something crazy that happened when I got waved. I had um I had I got word that another team put a claim in. And then when Elliot Friedman announced who I was going to, my agent called me and said he he screwed it up. You’re not going back to New Jersey. And I think there was like an asterisk beside um players from the expansion. Their old team gets first dibs on them. So there was teams that were lower in the standings that put claims in that I should have everyone thought should have went to them. But there was like a league rule that I think I want to say nobody knew about and Jersey Sneaky had first dibs on me. So I ended up back there again. Wow. Did you know that? No, I didn’t know that. I didn’t know that at all. Yeah, I didn’t know that at all. That’s must have been a roller coaster. I was I was really wondering if I was almost kind of hoping that you were going to say, “Well, you know, somebody in Jersey said, listen, we’re going to try to get you back. We’re doing this. We’re going to get you back cuz it’s only what 20 games or so and then you end up back in New Jersey.” It felt like I never left. Like it was actually weird. Like it felt like I went on a vacation to Seattle and came back. Like when somebody asks me where I’ve played, I’m like, I was in Jersey the last five and a half years. like explain to them that I left for a month is just like that would just I mean it it’s complicated like I don’t really know how that happened like how many guys have played on a team and then left for a month and went back to the same team it’s like a loan it’s like a soccer loan or something yeah so I don’t Yeah I don’t even that’s why I say like you move everything out there like you move your family out there and Like it’s no joke going across the country. Like that’s like a 5 and a half hour flight. I’m in a different time zone. I furnish a whole house and then like a few days later they’re like, “Yeah, you’re going back.” And I’m like, “I just got set up.” That’s crazy. See, and and and they say, don’t they say, you know, you go someplace, well, I was just there for a cup of coffee. Yeah. I hear Seattle’s got some pretty good coffee. Literally. Yeah. That was a cup of coffee. That was That was a cup of coffee. But were you were you pumped when you were going back to Jersey then? So pumped. You have no idea. I was I was jumping. I was just just so I don’t know, like I said, it was humbling. I was so grateful to be back in a situation where I felt like I could make an impact and continue my career. Um, you know, every year like you can’t take it for granted. Like there’s so many kids coming. They’re coming for my job. You know, there’s a lot there’s a lot of jobs that aren’t up for grabs, but mine’s up for grabs every year. And um I’d like to think I continue to get better. But all of a sudden one day, you know, you get picked in expansion, the next day you’re on the waiver wire. Like things happen quick. Like it didn’t really matter that the year prior. I was playing good minutes and ping killing and doing all these things. Like if nobody needed a forward on the waiver wire that day, like who knows, maybe you’re in the minor for the next, you know, six months. I don’t know. like things just the puzzle pieces seem to fall in a weird way. I don’t know what to say about it. Yeah. Yeah. Let me ask you about New Jersey. We don’t got to pull the plug yet, do we? No. Okay. Well, I know he’s got a couple more minutes. Yeah. We’re going to let you go in a couple minutes here, but uh Yeah. So, I’m going to ask you about New Jersey and then we’ll ask you one more question about Dallas. But, uh I covered you under Lindy Ruff for about a year and a half and I’ve heard a lot about Sheldon Keith from last year and how it was kind of a a culture shock a little bit for the organization, players, kind of everyone involved. Can you just take us through what not just what it was like playing under him but what that transition was like for you? Yeah. Um so we would have had Lindy for four years I think. Right. So um Lindy and Sheldon both um I would say bring value in different ways. I think both like such respected coaches in the league. Um, Jersey has such a amazing young core of guys and they’re getting to the point now where I’m pretty confident that those guys, Nico and Jack and and and I think that they can carry that group kind of um I don’t want to say regardless of who’s behind the bench, but that’s kind of what happens in this league, right? Like the the the big dogs take care of, you know, everyone. um to have Shelton come in. Um yeah, it was different, but it’s the NHL. Like you got a you got a coach that comes in, he’s a little harder on you. Like it is what it is. Like um I think he’s I think he’s done great great stuff for that team, but but so has Lindy, right? Like um the team’s going to continue to grow. There’s not um there’s not often coaches who get to pick up a team in as good of a position as as Sheldon did, right? Like it’s it’s it’s the same I talked to Glenn about it. Like like how many coaches get to pick up a team that’s in as good of a spot as as Dallas is, right? Like um so I think Jersey will continue to be a playoff team under Sheldon moving forward. Um, culture shock I think a little bit, but you know that’s I think when I read that too like it almost seemed like a little bit of a copout but that’s just you know that’s I don’t think that’s what that is. I think you settle into whatever the situation is in a matter of days. Like culture shock in September but it’s not a culture shock in March anymore. like that’s not really, you know, that’s not really I don’t think that that’s I don’t know. I think I think it was maybe I think I maybe read that from Freriedman and I don’t really know the context on it. Like I don’t know if that was in a negative light or in a good way or what really the deal was with that, but I don’t think it was a bad thing. Nathan, I want to probably last one for me. Last one. Yeah. Nathan, um you were your draft year is what 2016 17. What was your draft year? Matthews, uh, Dubois, L. That must have been 16. So, where where was the draft at then? Buffalo. Okay. Oh, beautiful Buffalo. Um, so did you got to walk up on the draft floor, right? No, you didn’t. Well, oh, you mean the stage or like Yeah, cuz round two was on the floor. I was a second rounder, so I was day two. So, like when they called my name, I could barely hear it. Like I think my brother or someone was like, “Oh, I think they you just got picked.” Like it was like the show on day two is like not a show. Okay. Well, here’s the reason I asked that. Been a lot of talk obviously with this decentralized draft stuff. I just want to get a player’s opinion. You know what I mean? Versus missing that being there and then what’s happening. And now what are your thoughts on it? Um, I think I think they got to keep it the way it was. I don’t know what I was watching this year. I Some of those poor kids got up to the stage and were like talking to a screen full of people that couldn’t hear what they were saying. Like it was just kind of like, you know, get up there and and shake Gary’s hand and, you know, meet the owner. Like, this stuff is cool. like uh you know we’re like I remember when I was 16 like even seeing Gary from like the 100 level in the crowd like but you know you’re still a you’re still you’re still a kid right like um I think it’s so I don’t think we need to go more online there’s like everything in life is like moving decentralized like we can keep the draft in one location I think that’s pretty cool yeah all good luck all right I’m Hey we’re with I just want I just want to say, Nathan, for me especially, I am looking forward to what you’re going to do for this team. I I think it’s a sorely needed role, position, however you want to phrase the way that you play the game. And you know, and I I and I do think that Gully is the kind of guy that, you know, you earn your ice. You earn your ice with everybody, but I think that they’re going to recognize that it’s it’s that could be that piece that it really pushes this team into a different different neighborhood. So anyway, welcome to Dallas and uh good luck this year. Thank you guys so much. There you go. All right, Nathan, thanks so much for joining the show. We’ll catch you at training camp. That’s Nathan Bastion, newest Dallas Stars forward, joining the show. Let’s hit a break and then we got some more dieh hard questions to answer. We have the uh Dallas versus All Y’all shirt, right? That was the one you were rocking. What? That’s the black one in the middle right there. Very cool. We have the Nolan Ryan shirt, the Big Tex. Uh, I think I have the barbecue one up in the top left, which I just realized was a barbecue shirt like a couple days ago after wearing it for months. I just like the color, the old Mavs logo, and then the word I can never remember. Uh, the combination of all the different mascots, which GMBB, I’m talking to you. I’d love that shirt. Go to alls.com and get yours now. Look, that that Rangers jersey there. Yep. I think they could make one of them like with Parsons and Jerry fighting each other. Yeah, they think they could have a wrestling Luka and Oh, yeah, the other dude here. Yeah, they got plenty of plenty of animosity around here. All right, lads. This is going to be funny because we are pretty we are going to do about two questions and then we’re going to go to another ad break because we pushed off the ad break for so long that we are about to hit the next. Why don’t you just read it? Why don’t you just No, we got to we got to get a quick break in here. So, let’s go back into some die hard questions. Uh for Luds from Court, did you catch any fish this summer or just a bunch of Miller Light? caught a bunch of bottle bass. How’s that? Bass. Yeah. Uh, never put a pole in the water. My grandpa was a professional guide way way back. I was all fished out and if I’m not going with him, um, he’d take me where fish jump in the jump in the lake. Yeah. I got to I actually got to fish with Bart Star. Uh, I got to fish Hank Aaron. Packers. Hank Aaron. Yeah. So, I was pretty lucky as a kid in Wisconsin. Uh, yeah. So, no, no, no fishing for me. All right, let’s go to the next question here. This is from Marshall second. To what play level do players get invested in rivalries or just the fans? No, no, it’s it’s the players. I mean, without the players and the fans don’t get involved because they got to be games, right? How much does that take in effect when you know you’re Well, the fans feed the players. I mean, you feed it. You you feel it. Do you feel it at as a as a home as you do as much as on the road, you know, and because when you get into some of those, I mean, we for us back in Montreal it, you know, Chicago was big and obviously with, you know, Minnesota and Dallas, uh, Quebec was big in Montreal. And when you played on the road, especially in Chicago in the stadium, um, Philly for some reason with Montreal, a little bit of a brawl there every once in a while, but it feels like you’re not just playing against 20 guys, you’re playing against the other 20,000 people there when you’re on the road. So, some of those buildings are intimidated, but yeah, the fans get you involved, but it it the rivalries are real, you know, especially playoff things. That’s that’s why you’re talking about the rivalries are built. I think that’s the way they have the the reason that they have the playoffs set up the way that they are, which I don’t I’m not crazy about, but but it is what it is. All right, next one is from Harry Wagstaff, who always calls us out for letting the fans down and turning our back on the fans when we miss a show. So, thank you for that, Harry. But with the recent Luca and Mika trades, I was wondering if LDS ever had a teammate traded that upset the players and if so, who? Uh, there was one personally for me. Um, I it was a year when I was done. I came back here to work with the team a little bit and um it was a new indicer. And what it was is it was a couple there was a lot of rumors going on and again I wasn’t part of the team as a player. Um, but you know, you win a championship with them and you know, you’re you’re pretty tight with the guys and um, so I was back and forth into the coach’s office and if somebody was going to get moved or get traded like let’s go get so and so. I’m like I’m the grim reaper that they’re sending out there and then we get we get to 205 204 whatever it was. In other words, the trade deadline was over but everything hasn’t cleared. People don’t understand sometimes they can make a trade at 159, but it it’s it can go on for a while until it clears with the offices and everybody else. Anyway, and I was kind of going back and forth into the into the change room where Newi and everybody was kind of standing. I walked out and said, “We’re all clear and you know, nothing’s happened.” And all of a sudden, I get a call. One of them, Doug Armstrong, actually called me back in said, “Hey, go grab newie.” I’m like, “No.” And I’m like, “Oh, you chick.” Like, “You’re going to make me go grab him.” So, I had to walk back out there. Guys were all kind of hanging around each other. Hey, we’re all we’re all here. Nothing happened. And I said, “Uh, got to head back.” And so, and I just walked out and I I felt terrible doing it, but I was the grim performed for about 3 seconds. That’s not a fun situation. No. Well, lads, just like I promised, we’re going to hit another break now. Oh, are we? Oh, nice. So, next more questions and maybe a little hockey breakdown here right after this DLS. All right, lads. Now I get to talk about actually, you know what? First and foremost, if you have not already donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters, go ahead and hit that button. You did seven of them. Yeah. Right. All right. Let’s hit the last few questions here and then if we have time uh we maybe we could talk about whatever we want to talk about from Uncle D904. Do either you I’m assuming me or LDS see Jakeer’s close friends getting traded having a negative effect on him. I know players are different today but do you think the front office is trying to smooth it over with him whenever this happens or it’s just a professional and moves on? So basically, will it affect Jake that his f best friends basically keep getting traded? And is there any sort of Jim Nil reaching out and saying like, “Hey, we know this has happened to you now three times just to smooth things over.” No, you know what? I I I think if you’re younger, you know, if you’re rookie or second year, maybe it’s still there, but you know, the more every year that you add on to it, you understand it’s a business. And there’s very few I don’t know how many players we can go in the league or even over the last 10 15 20 years how many players the team that they start with they finish with and I’m talking about a long career whether it’s 10 years 15 20 whatever it may be but the longer you play it’s never easy right but but you’re you get it I mean it’s it’s it’s bound to happen I mean very rarely do you get if you got two good friends on on the team and you’re the three amigos and I’m going to tell you one of them is probably going to get traded at some point. Now, you know, Edmonton and you know in the 80s they had their six guys that stayed together as long as they needed to. So, um but yeah, you understand especially when you’re signing these big contracts, it’s a business, right? And got to treat it that way. All right, next one from Farmer. I don’t know if this is Tarmer or just Farmer and I wrote it wrong. So, whoever you are, thank you. Uh, since all the superstars in Dallas are getting traded, what would you see as a good return for Robertson since the rumors won’t stop if the trade did happen? I I don’t know what a trade a good trade is because who’s going to give up another 35 goal score in exchange for a 35 goal score. So, you know, again, who replaces Jason? Who? And again, it I mean, this is all about money is what it is, right? I mean, it’s the Ranton and Deal and Wyatt and you know, and they know Thomas Harley’s coming up and so Jim Jim’s been found a way to make things work here and so I think that um and then you know what that by the time Robo thing kicks in, somebody else is going to be gone and they’re going to find the dollar somehow. But I just don’t know when you have a 30 35 consistent player goal scorer, I don’t know how you go out and and you can find them and replace another one. I mean, if you if you if you have to find if you can bring in two players that fill that that top six role that that role and then all of a sudden you’ve got a number two or three defenseman that you can slide in there and now you’re saying, “Okay, we buttoned up two different areas by by this one player, but I don’t I don’t know how you do it.” What do you think? That seems to be the only way I could see it actually happening is if they cuz I don’t think they go out like remember we were talking about Marner being a potential flip. like there’s no there’s no team that’s giving out someone that’s going to help Dallas become a better team by trading Jason Robertson for them. The only chance I see it is if what you said maybe they get a a top nine, let’s say forward and a top four defenseman or a top, you know, a right-handed defenseman. I don’t know, but I just think for for this to actually happen, which I still don’t think it’s going to, but we’re in this land now. We just want to talk about it. If if this actually were to happen, I believe it would help this team in multiple ways, right? They would have to get two players back. If I asked you who is more important, Jason, Jason or Thomas, Jason Robertson, Thomas Harley, if you can keep one of them, who do you is that where you’re at? Yep. Thomas Harley. Okay. I think that and and I didn’t being a defenseman and and I think where where Thomas can go um the way the game is going and what he he lends, I tend to to lean that way also. But I I think it’s a hard because again, you got to get Thomas signed at some point, too. Yep. So, I’m sure that plays into the equation. And is the ball really in Jason Robertson’s court, right? I mean, how do you say it’s not? Yeah. I mean, you either accept it and want to be part of a team that is a top whatever you want to call, top six team, top four team, however you want to rank this team. Um the odds of you probably going to a top two or four team probably aren’t very good, but we’ll see. Yep. Agreed. All right, couple more. We have I’m going to read these more uh joke answers first, then we’ll get to the last real question from You say joke answers? Yeah, joke questions from TC Ry Guy. Can Micah Parsons play right-handed defense for the Dallas Stars? I think that’s that might be the only way they’re keeping him in Dallas. You got to get him back here to play on a different team that doesn’t trade away superstars, right? I don’t know, but I’m I’m hearing a lot now and it’s probably just media, but it’s starting to sway where like it may not have been such a bad deal. I don’t know. I guess we’ll see if that one. Aren’t you a Packers fan? I’m a Packers fan when I’m here. Okay. When I’m there, I’m a Cowboys fan. Okay. So, you just like to annoy I wear opposite like to annoy people. Yeah, I do. I I wear a Cowboys hat there and I wear a Packers hat here. Perfect. So, perfect. All right. And from I love Misty 1985. When is Loods getting Discord? What am I getting? What? Discord? What does that mean? Discord. Do you not remember? What is Discord? You don’t remember Discord? That damn Discord thing? Yes. What do you mean when am I getting it? When are you going to get the app and get on there and start talking to the fans? Oh, I thought you meant the damn Discord. That was No, no, no. You got to lo They want you to log in. They want you on there every night. Who’s asking this question? Was that Ben? I love Misty. No, this is uh what’s in there? What? What’s Why? That’s a great question. Why don’t we tell the fans? Wait, why do I have to go? What’s They want you in there to go get They want you in there to talk. So basically Discord is where I get my sunglasses. Where do I get my sunglasses? No, them damn sunglasses I’ve been hearing about for a year now. Not not in the Discord. They are not in the Discord. All right. Uh wait, where do I get the sunglasses though? What’s that called? I think it’s Shady Rays. Yeah, Shady Rays. That’s it. Where the hell do I get them? And my rugged road cooler. Is that the Discord? Rugged Road Cooler. I can’t do it. Well, I that they should really give that one to me though. Nobody else uses it, I guess. So, Oh, man. Okay. Well, you haven’t even answered the question yet. I have my Do I have to send it in for you to answer the question? Where do I get my sunglasses? In what part? I I don’t have them either. You’re asking the wrong guy. Oh, well, you’re getting things, shirts, and things like that. Where do you get them? I haven’t got anything. Oh, okay. I didn’t get anything. Anyway, so what’s in the Discord? Okay. The Discord is a server that everyone can chat. So, there’s Star Channel, Mav channel, Cowboys, and there’s movies. This thing on the side. Is that basically basically but all the time and these die hards are in there? That would not be cool. All the time. Yeah. Okay. Well, anyway, there should be a beer limit before you get to go in there or you can’t go in there after. There’s some conversations that have definitely come after some. Are they some of them kind of conversations? But everybody can see them. Everybody that’s in that every die hard and everyone who works here, but then they could actually put that out there somewhere else in the universe where this is what so and so. This is what Craig Lewig said. Yeah, I won’t be going there. Yeah, they’ll be posting. and I’ll be posting your stuff for the public. All right, last question for you. This is from Schmidt Happens, which hilarious name. When you when you need to ramp it up and get your adrenaline going, what is your go-to music? Is it a particular style? Metallica band or song? There’s your answer. Yeah, specific song. I would say Vinnie. You know, the funny thing is I got tell you another Vinnie story, Vinnie Paul. All right. Pantara. So I in the 80s, you know, there the rock bands were the rock bands and there was extracurricular activity that always and I had asked Vinnie one time if he uh did you ever partake playing it politely? And he goes, “Leds?” Nope. He goes, “When I need a little bump,” he goes, “I just hit the reset button.” And I said, “The reset button?” He pulls up his sleeve and he’s got a tattoo with a circle and in the middle of it it said reset. He says, “I just hit the reset button. No way. Yeah, that helped you. Anyway, um yeah, so no, I’m uh I’m a Hetfield thing. Everybody knows the story about me going to there. I It was a Hetfield thing until when I got back from Mexico. We were in Mexico City with Vantara and I don’t know, some other band that was there with Metallica. And Hetfield when I walked in after and we talked for a little bit and he signed a signed a poster. He goes, “You want to autograph?” I said, “Yeah, sure. That’d be great.” I got it and put it up, put it in my bag. About I don’t know six, seven, eight, nine years later, I find that poster or you know this, don’t you? Yeah. Find that poster and I’m like, oh man, this is Hetfield. I get it. I open it up and it says, “Hey, Luds, nice to meet you. Go Sharks.” I thought, “You bastard.” So, he was a big Obviously, they go on the ice and you know, they play stuff there. So, anyway, yeah, I’m a Metallica guy. All right, Metallica. That’s it, Luds. That’s it. That’s all our questions. Say two in French. That means that’s all. That’s all, folks. That’s not all for the show because we still have three minutes. But Ryan, what do you listen to when you got to get fired up? Oh, this is where this is where Sam fills. I like Metallica, too. Okay. Yeah. You know, the Sandman, you know, there you go. Whiskey in the Jar. Whatever the hell. You got to get some of the older stuff, too. Like I’d love that. Um, this is Yeah. Yeah. That’s about it, really. All right. The rock guy. Aussie. I was into Aussie. Let’s take the next two minutes here, lads. Let’s take the next two minutes to talk to Cat and Bobby. No to No, not to them. Bobby, you see? No, we’re not talking to Cat. How we doing, Bobby? She doesn’t want to. Yeah, make sure you make sure you donate Big Brothers Big Sisters. Hey, wait a second. You know what we haven’t talked about? I was going to say introduce our new producer. No, the $50 thing you’re supposed to mention. Bobby, can you film $50 thing? $50,000. No, but we haven’t. I’d be happy to, Luds. Hi, everybody. So, um, funny thing happened whenever Craig Lewig walked into the office today. He, uh, he noticed what Sam was wearing and he lost his mind, stormed into GM Ben’s office and said, “Ben, get me a new effing shirt. Beep bleep bleep bleep. I can’t wear this bleeping shirt.” So, say that word. No, you cannot. No, right now is when you’ve got to stop saying. Um, so we’re raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters this week. If anyone donates $50, Craig Lewig will show you what he actually wore to the office today. He will He will show you. He’ll show you what’s under this shirt. Oh. Oh. Is that what we’re going to now? Yeah. And you would rather me not say the f- word than show them. Well, we’re not going over time. We’re just literally trying to get to the Oh, we’re supposed to get off the air. Look at that. All right, Ryan, Ryan, please come on the microphone and take the next 20 seconds to introduce yourself as our new producer. Um Oh, by the way, this is our third producer. Wait, and our and our part- timerrs back here. Everybody quits on us or gets fired. I don’t know what it is. We have 20 seconds left. My name is Ryan Vers. I’m the new stars producer. Uh, I got a background in television with North Texas. Um, yeah, that’s it. I’m good. Ryan, right? That’s it. He’s good. I come in this morning and I and we’re talking. I said, “Oh, nice to meet you.” He goes, “No, we’ve met before. We worked together before.” I’m like, “What? What are you talking about?” No. Well, yeah. No, we don’t know if it was at BS or at the Americans. Not at Valleys. See, I used to work with him. And everybody who tuned in today on Tuesday, thank you so much for Craig Lewig.
