Padres vs. Rockies Game Highlights (9/5/25) | MLB Highlights

The Padres’s remain two games back at the LA Dodgers heading into this three-game series. And the Rockies and Padres’s will meet seven times in the next 10 days. Kyle Freeland, remember, obviously he got tossed eight pitches in the other day. So, he’s starting tonight. The eight pitch outing, obviously not what we wanted to see from him, right? But if you go back to the start before that against the Houston Astros, I thought he threw the ball incredibly well. Swung on a miss. Goodman will clear himself and go to first to record the strike out. So, two outs, nobody aboard. Manny Machado will be the batter. Sends the ball high in the air, but not that deep down the left field line. Tovar wants it. The shorts stop and fair ground makes the catch. Kyle Freeland with a couple of pop outs and a strike out. Well, tonight taking the baseball in game one of this three game series is Nick Paveta. He’s been good all year long, but especially after a Padres’s loss and he wants to be the stopper, right? the closer, if you will, and stop that losing streak from the Padres’s that they’re going through right now. Now, a left-handed batter for Paveta and Mickey Moniac. He’ll drive this to center field. That’s a solid base hit. Hunter Goodman, what a run. He’s on the Rockies catcher. 3-2 goes again. The pitch is ball four and the throw down does not matter. And maybe hurt on the play is Croninworthy is Oh no. coming up a little bit lame after that bit. He is also staying in the game. This is to short and quickly to second base on the fores to Cronorth ends the inning. Gavin Sheets leads off. Here’s the one two. That’s a great looking pitch. See you later. Kyle’s on his game. Second strike out. Swung on a miss. So Kyle’s retired the first six and he has struck half of them out. Tovar Keros and Bernabel 67 and eight coming up for the Rockies against Nick Paveta. A one and two. Tovar swings and misses. Strike three. Chase that high fast forming Bernabel trying to get out of a slump and a four pitch walk. Here’s Ryan Ritter. Lava got a great jump right there. Bernabell swipes second. It’s his first major league stole base. Swinging a foul tip held on to by Alias Diaz for strike three to end the inning. Jose Glaciius leads on. And Jose goes down. Kyle’s fourth strike out. Here’s the one two and then strike three. This is as good as I’ve seen Kyle in a while. This one is hit to right field and shallow coming in as Moniac. A long run, but they’re going to get to this and make the grab. Another one, two, three inning for Kyle Freeland. Tyler Freeman right out to deep right center field. His first time up. Swinging a miss. And he put him away on a cutter. And two away. And we’ll see if Hunter Goodman can keep this inning going for the Rockies. And that one’s hit deep to right. Tatis going back. He’s running out of room. It is gone into the Rockies bullpen. There goes number 28. Hunter Goodman’s matched the alltime record for home runs by a primary catcher in Rocky’s history. There’s more to come. One- nothing Colorado. Kyle has retired the first nine Padres’s hitters. 3-2 pitch is strike three called on the outside corner. He fooled another Padre hitter looking. Breaking ball gets him with the heat. Kyle Freeland one-two pitch to Ryan O’Harn. Swag and a miss. Seven strikeouts on the night for Kyle Freeland. 11 straight retired as it comes plateward. Pitch swing and a miss. Got him with a curveball. He strikes out the side here in the fourth. Kyle Freeland and he struck him out. Strike out number four for Nick Paveta. Two down. Kyle Keros. Ground ball right side and through off the bat of Keros. Swinging a miss and he struck him out on the curveball. Fifth strike out for Pava through four. It’s one- nothing Rockies. Well, you can’t be any more dominant than Kyle Freeland has been through four innings. Eight punch outs as he gets ready to go left on left against Gavin Sheets. And that’s tapped to Freeland. Freeland throws a fast. Here’s Lauriano. 10 pitch. Lauraniano lines it into right center field. Not a home run, but it’ll be a hit. It’ll find a gap. It’ll go all the way to the wall. Doyle sends it back in and Ramon Lauriano a one out double at the first hit of the night for the Padres’s. And for the Padres’s here, it’ll be left up to Jose Glaciius. And how about another one? Strike out number nine. Gloriano who doubled is left at second base. One pitch to Ritter. Takes it the other way on the line and coming in to make the sliding catch in right is Fernando. Well, that thing was headed for the grass, but Fernando says no. Two outs. Mickey Monia, who is one of the Rockies, three hits. And this is going to drop in center field for a base hit. So Mickey’s got his second knock. And Hunter Goodman hoping to do more of what he did back in the third inning. And just toward left center field, Monia cuts the bag at second. Heading to third. Merryill fires it in. men on the corners with two outs and Jordan Beck will see if he can come through. He’s up one- nothing. Two outs first and third and Glacius did not get the out. It’s second on the back flip to Croninorth and the Rockies get a second run. Nearly one of the best defensive plays we’ve seen all year. One out, nobody on top of the sixth inning. Elias Diaz, the former Rocky will be the batter. He’s loud to Caros. Good pick up and he knew he had time. That’s a beautiful play by Kyle Caros. 02 and this is popped up middle of the diamond. Kyle is going to walk off knowing somebody’s going to catch it. That somebody is Ryan Ritter. Another one, two, three inning for Kate Frey. Boy, has he been outstanding. The hitter now warming Bernabel to third. Machado picks it goes to second for one. On to first for two. Round the horn they go on the 543 DP. It’s inning ending. Kyle Freeling has thrown just 70 pitches, giving up one base hit. And this one could be available. It’s going to be close for Garn. He got it. Yes, he did. He had to jump up to get that. Timed it beautifully. What a great catch by warming Bernabel for the second out. Here’s the one. And it’s in the air to bet. He’s got to come quickly and he’ll get there. Catch it above his hat. Another one, two, three inning. Sound redundant. Kyle Freeland splendid tonight. Sublime. Demoniac at first. And here’s Hunter Goodman. This is in the air to shallow right. Tatis long striding sliding. Can’t make the catch around third. Here comes Monarch and he was still standing up. So all the way from first, Moniac just took off on contact and he scores and it’s three nothing Colorado. Absolutely brilliant performance from Kyle Freeland. 78 pitches he’s navigated seven innings. One-two pitch swing and a miss. He got him for punch out number 10. That is a history making strikeout for the Rockies. Kyle Freeland with his 10th strike out of the ball game. It has been 293 games for the Rockies without having a pitcher strike out double figures. Taking it the other way into right field and a base hit in front of Monia for a Glacius with two down. One-1 ball middle of the diamond toolar’s got it. There’s three outs in the eighth. Kyle Freeland rolls on. Kyle Freeland a masterpiece. Eight shutout innings for Kyle Freeland. Victor Vodnik in the ninth with the Rockies ahead three to nothing. First hitter is not going to be Elias Diaz. Going to be Luis Arise. The off pitch here to Arise. That’s ball four. Lead off walk for Luis Arise. Tatis will stand in. Three for four in his career against Vodnik. Ground ball through the right side into right field. A base hit. Arise will take second. Just like that, you got the tying run coming to the plate with nobody out. O’Harn lifts the fly ball to shallow left as Beck moves in and over towards the line. He’ll make the catch for the first out of the ninth. And now one out for Manny Machado. Ground ball fair. There’s Warren on the first double play. Ball game over. Machado grounds into the double play that ends this ball game. And the Rockies shut out the Padres’s a final of three to nothing. That is frustrating. And the Padres’s miss an opportunity to pick up a game on the Dodgers.
