🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS Pittsburgh Pirates /September 06 /MLB THE SHOW 25

to the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Milwaukee Brewers going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. First pitch moments away and on the hill, Johan Oedo. And Chris, he seems a lot more comfortable pitching here at home than on the road. Right. Indeed, Boo. And there can be several factors, whether it’s just sleeping in your own bed, being around your family, going to your favorite restaurant before you come to the ballpark. I don’t know what it is for him, but the numbers are clear that he’s been dominant in this place. The only frustration is you see how good he is at home and if you’re a teammate or a coach, you’re looking and saying, “Hey, if you can be almost as good as that on the road, you’re going to have a great year and we’re going to win more ball games.” And there’s a foul ball. And that’s a strikeout. Looking clip the bottom of the zone with a curve for strike three. Isaac Collins dumped down now for the Brewers. Collins. And he pumps in a strike. Collins measures 5’8 in 185 lbs and he was a ninthround draft pick back in 2019. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and the count is one and one. Really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. One down, base is empty. Swing it a miss and the count is one and two. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. No. Anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Any distraction. Gonzalez to first in time and Milwaukee is set down in order. Brewers go down quietly and now the Pirates will take their turn in a scoreless ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in Pittsburgh and on the hill in this one, Quinn Pier. What do you have on him, Chris? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. At the plate for Pittsburgh, Jared Triolo. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris swaying at a ball driven out to center way back there and that is gone. A soaring shot to center. It’s his sixth home run of the season. The Pirates score first. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time and that is bat boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. Spencer Horwitz will hit next [Applause] and foul ball. This is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night. popped up. Contras in position. Puts it away for the out. Batting third. Here’s the Pirates lineup now. They do a lot of things well in this offense, Zingi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. and as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately leads to a lot of success. Tommy Fam. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s Tommy Fam. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. Check. Swing. And he went. And that is strike one. Two outs. Base is empty. And that one fouled off. Swings and miss has struck him out. Pirates draw first blood on the solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. You’re dialed into the show. Back here at PNC Park. Top of the second and now it’s William Contrarus Johan Odo back to work out in front and foul to the left side and here it comes climb the ladder with that fast ball and two now Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today and Boos something to keep an eye on is how pitch pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone. We see a lot more of that in today’s game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff. Keller definitely an umpire that isn’t afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone. Stays alive. He goes down looking south. freel down now for the Brewers. Fought off foul. Swings through that one out in front that time. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. One out. Base is empty. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Andrew Vaughn now. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Brings it in. Out number two. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Jake Bowers. Now here’s Jake Bowers. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. That’s in there. Strike one. Freelick leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] Strike him out. Got him looking as the fast runs back over the inside corner. No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Pirates one and the Brewers nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen. In for a strike 0 and one check swing called strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Fights it off. He’ll see another. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Wow, just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Up next for the Pirates, Nick Gonzalez. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. and a big swing and a miss. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame and that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. And a base hit and that extends the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s Joey Bart now. [Music] Joey Ruer takes off pitch in for a strike. Throws saved. That’s a stolen base. Runner at second. Two down. Bottom half of inning number two. Pirates. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still manages a throw. Too late. And the runner is safe. And the misplay costs him. I think he got a little casual on that play and took it for granted a little bit. So maybe just as much of a mental mistake as a physical one. And with two outs, that’s a tough one to swallow for the entire defense. So two outs with runners on the corners. Next is the speedy first baseman Nick York. Just missed. [Music] Pirates chopped out towards short. Ortiz. They take the force out. That’s the third out. Pirates strand a couple. They lead it one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the rookie third baseman number 21. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one in there at the knees. Fouled off down the right side. [Music] the one-two swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. did a nice job right there. Joseph Ortiz batting with one down. Takes the strike and that’s in the dirt and one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] One down, base is empty. Foul ball still a one and two count. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Chases in the dirt. Slider there. Bart down to first with it in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. This is Bryce Terra struck out looking his first time. There’s the strike that misses the zone. And that’s ball one. to the right side. Gonzalez. The throw to first. Third out. Nobody left for Milwaukee. They’re down one- nothing. Back here in Pittsburgh as we go to the last of the third. Now it’s the shortstop Jared Triolo. [Music] Right back to him on the mound. And a quick out number one. Now batting third base Spencer. And the batter now Spencer Horowitz. First time up was a pop out. Come on, Pirates. You can do it. That one’s in there. 0 and one. All right, Pirates. And that skips in the dirt. That one lifted to left. No. Oh, come on. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting designated hitter Ryan. Two down. Base is empty. So next to the plate for Pittsburgh, Ryan Reynolds grounded out his first time. Missed inside with the curve. That one down the line and it goes just foul now. A high-f fly ball out to left center. Bowers on his way over. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Back here at PNC Park, digging in is the switch inning outfielder Isaac Collins. Close but called a ball and it’s one and0. Well, these Brewers just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. And a bunt towards third. And that’s just foul. And a swing and a miss. Make it seven strikeouts for him. Quite the start to this game on the mound. looking very dangerous to these hitters. Seven punch outs already. So, this lineup hasn’t had much success trying to figure him out. I’m impressed with what we’re seeing here. At the plate, Jackson Chorio 0 for one so far. Swaying in a ball popped in the air. Triolo, he’s got it. And there’s two away. Up next for Milwaukee, catcher William Contr. Digging in, William Contrus. His first at bat was a strike out. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates. Contrarus in his fourth year, 27 years old, and he was born in Venezuela. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Line drive and that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second. And that’s a two out double. It’s their first hit of the game. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. So, runner at second, two down. Selick up now for the Brewers. And that’s in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Come on. And that’s off the inside edge. And that is ball one. Pirates. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that’s got extra bases written all over it. Ruer from second crosses the plate. It’s 1-1. Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Next for Milwaukee, Andrew Vaughn popped out and foul ground. First time through at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. top of the zone for a strike and a count is 0 and2. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. [Applause] That’s a strike out. Woody Keller says he went around. Brewers pick up a run on this RBI double. Call even now at 1-1. And we’re back. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Tommy Fan. Yeah. Pirates inside. Just missed. Just missed. Go. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. There’s the strike and the count is three and one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. And the 3-2 to third in time Devon and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Up next for the Pirates right fielder. Here’s McCutchen 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And another ball. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. One down, base is empty. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one strike [Applause] turned on but that’s foul down the third baseline. Slowly on the ground to short Ortiz. Now the throw to first on the run. Nicely done for the out. Now batting second base Nick. So two down now. And here is Nick Gonzalez. Struck out swinging his first time. All right, Pirates. And that misses one and0 inside. Almost got him. [Music] 3-1. That’s ball four. Tried another sinker, but couldn’t find a zone. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Cruz in the box here lets that one go for a ball. The two out walk. Got to erase that and really go to work on the hitter. You got to go ahead and just let him steal if he’s going to try to create the swing and miss and get out of this jam. They get the force out number three. So, no runs on no hits, no errors, and one left on base. Onto the top of the fifth we go. All tied 1-1. Ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the left fielder, Jake Bowers. Oedo back to work. Check swing tried to hold up. Now it’ll appeal to third and that’s going to be ruled a swing. Swang and a miss. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. And the 02 and foul ball. in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So what we’re seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. Next pitch is outside. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. That or just going off of gut or field. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. That missed by a lot and the count is two and two. ground ball right side and it goes just foul. Here’s a 2-2. Battling here as he fouls it away. Got him. That’s his ninth strikeout so far. Here’s the third base. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base pads. One down, base is empty. Foul ball still 0 and two. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. All tied up and we’re at the top of the fifth. That one misses in the dirt outside with a breaking ball. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Good job to fight that one off. 3-2. Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Come on. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Coming on is Fam to make the play. Two down. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order. Now a chance for Bryce Terang. Bowl for two in this one. That’s in there. Going one. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Backed off the plate that time. Two outs. That one just misses. Two balls, two strikes. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat. Oh, now this one gets away at the plate. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. [Music] Man on second, two down. That one to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Milwaukee leaves one. Score remains tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the catcher, Joey Bart. Joey Bart, swinging a foul straight back. You know, these Pirates as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. [Music] And that’s downed away. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Cut on and miss. struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Nick York, the next Pirate to hit. He’s 0 for one. York inside. And that’s ball one. [Music] And that one missing low. [Music] Next offering in there for a strike. Now two balls in a strike up the middle and it’s through for a hit. So now back to the top of the order. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Jared Triolo. He’s already homerred in this game. Swing and a taper that rolls foul. [Music] Pickoff move to first. York back on a dive. [Music] Fly ball to right. Fre drops into the glove and there’s two away. Now batting third baseman Spencer Horitz. So digging in Spencer Horowitz. [Applause] That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. Ripped, but a curls. Foul. That’s outside. One and two to count. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Ripped to third, but handled. And that’ll end the inning. Pirates leave one. Score remains. is deadlocked at a one. Top of the sixth inning and stepping in is the speedy Isaac Collins. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. That just misses ball one. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. Swing at a line drive ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Nice line drive to the pull side. met it out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. So now here’s the DH. Jackson Chorio, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. McCutchen on the move heading back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now that catcher William Contras William Contras up now for the Brewers. One for two. Move to first and he’s back in safely. Fast ball is outside. That misses. And that’s ball two. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is runner on the go. Pitch in for a strike. Throw to second. Save. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. Go ahead run at second. And we’re the top half of the sixth. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. Nice job behind the plate there. S. Freelick in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Pitch is in there and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away in the air right side. Fair ball. The run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single and a 21 ball game. Now Fre Derek Shelton out of the dugout and he will make the move. Johan Oedo is done and a nice effort out of him, no doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. So, they turn things over to one of their young arms, Paul Ste. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. up now for Milwaukee. South Freelick off the mark there and it’s one and0. One-run game. One out, one on. In the air, left side. Fam has this one sized up. Hauls it in. And there’s two away. [Applause] Now batting first base, Andrew Vaughn. Andrew Vaughn digs in now. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And a strike right through there. That one at triple digits. Bullpen action for the Pirates. Number 47 loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Chandler getting loose as well. Two outs. And that one fouled off. up and in. And it’s one and two. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. [Music] The next pitch misses and the count is even. Two and two. Contrarus off of first with two away. Foul tip into the mix. Struck him out, but the RBI single pushes across a run. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the six and now the DH Brian Reynolds hitter Brian Reynolds right through there for a strike. [Music] Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Off to a good start with a leadoff nod. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. Pretty good spot hard and inside, but that’s a perfect example of keeping your hands inside the ball tight to the body. The ability to take that back up the middle shows his approach is to use the entire field. No outs, runner at first. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Tommy Fan. [Applause] Next pitch inside and it’s one and one with a tying run on at first here in the bottom of the sixth. rips one to right down the line and it’s foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Bows it off. Still one and two. And a swing and a miss. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. And now it’s Andrew McCutchen. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Waste no time there. Just a simple ground ball the other way. That had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Now, a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Here’s the second base, Nick Gonzalez. That’s outside. Ball one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. [Applause] Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Collins under it. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two away now. Now batting center fielder O’Neal Cruz. Here’s O’Neal Cruz. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Poo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. And that is out of play. Two outs, couple of base runners at first and second. Pitch misses. One and one. [Music] Line drive, makes the grab, and that is the third out of the inning. Pirates strand a couple and they trail it here two to one. Back here at PNC Park now the left fielder Jake Bowers. Let’s go Pirates. Come on Pirates Skins in his second season. 22 years old. A former first round pick in 2023. outside and it’s 2 and 0. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. Down the inside corner for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. That one fouled off. Two and two. Got him. One gone here. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Now the third baseman strike on the inside corner and that is cut on and missed. 0 and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Bases empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. And one and two and misses inside. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire’s strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Swag and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner. the play got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes [Applause] and first offering is fouled off the other way and foul ball. Man, this has been a real important inning in relief. I mean, so far they’ve been doing a great job holding that deficit at one. Next offering is down low. And that one just missed off the outside edge. [Music] Hit in the air left field. Bam. And that’ll do it. Three up, three down for him there. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Brewers two and the Pirates one. Tobias Meyers on a pitch out of the pen here. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Leading off one- run game, this is Joey Bart. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Looking to get the tying run on base. popped up right side. Brings it in. One up, one down. Now batting first base Nick at the plate for Pittsburgh. Nick York. Fast for a strike. Movement in Milwaukee’s bullpen. Jacob Miserowski up and loosening in the pen. Kanik getting cranked up as well. [Music] Little bit low. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. And that misses two and one [Applause] [Applause] right through there for a strike. Swings over the splitter for strike three. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. And now Jared Triolo. He’s already homerred here in this one. There’s the strike. One more. Let’s go. One. One ball. One strike. All right, there’s the strike. [Music] Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Nothing across here this half. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Brewers two and the Pirates one. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Carmen Machinski. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. And that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Back to the top of the order now. Here’s the leadoff man for the Brewers, Bryce Terang. 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. There’s a strike. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Hit hard but foul off to the left. [Music] close one. Doesn’t get the call. It’s a ball in two strikes. Swings and misses. Pulled the string on the change up. Well, he didn’t get the call on the mound. on the pitch before. Felt like he should have had him looking, I think. But, you know, that’s good composure right there. He found a way to come back with another good pitch to get him to swing and miss. Isaac Collins up now for the Brewers. One for three. Popped up and that’s a foul ball. Here we go. Pirates ground ball right side and that’s just foul and they’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. A slider missed. [Music] Come on. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Come on. You can do it. Let’s go. And the sweeper misses. Hit hard. Base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting designated hitter Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. 0 for three in this one. Majinski picks over. Collins dives back in. safely. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Right side and that one handled. fires to first on the run. Got him. Nice play. William Contras up now for the Brewers. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. his 18th home run of the season. And they add a couple more. It’s 4-1. One pitch, one swing, one home run. Yeah, you could say that’s efficiency right there. Didn’t need much time in the box to make an impact. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Base is empty with two away. Next for the Brewers, S Freelick. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, nobody on. And that is in for a strike. And the count one and one. Activity in Pittsburgh’s bullpen. Number 47 loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. Chandler also getting ready. Two outs. Swanging a highfly ball in the air left field. That one carrying. Hops over the wall. And that’s an automatic double. Great effort out there as he tries to reach and haul this one in, but just can’t extend far enough. I think it started with a bad read off the bat which led to a bad jump, bad angle, and that cost him right there. Extra bases. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Carmen Majinski out of the game and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Pirates with a new arm on the mound. Number 47 coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. So runner at second, two down. And here is Andrew Vaughn. First pitch misses. And that’s in for a strike. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Music] And a swing and a miss at the slider in the dirt. Catcher has it. Fires to first. Got him. Inning over on the strikeout. Two runs for Milwaukee on the dinger. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Bottom of the inning now. The number two hitter, Spencer Horowitz. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. On your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. That’s off the inside corner. 1 and0 activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Abner Uribe, the young right-hander up and throwing. [Music] There’s the strike. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. Next offering is in for a strike. Back to the mound. It hit him. He gets to the bag in time and they come away with an out after a tricky start to the play. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. Ryan Reynolds here. High-fly ball down the left field line and that’s a foul ball. [Music] The Pirates trailing by three here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Pirates come on. That one catches the zone and that is strike two. Let’s go, Pirates. That one almost got him. line drive on to first and they take care of Reynolds for the out. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Here’s the left fielder, Tommy Fam, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. That one outside. And that’s ball one. And another ball. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. That one misses. And now three and 0. And there’s the strike. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Music] headed towards the corner and a foul ball. You got this. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Music] swings and misses. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. And one, two, three go the Pirates. And they trail it 4-1. Back here in Pittsburgh now, the left fielder Jake Bowers. Leading off for the Brewers. Left fielder Jake Bowersitt off the plate inside and that is ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Johan Ramirez loosening up in case he’s called upon by Derek Shelton. And it’s even up. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. The 1-1 warning track wall and you can touch them all. Baseball man. He made him pay for that one. It’s his sixth home run of the season. It’s 5-1. So frustrating for any pitcher. Finished outside the zone and he still managed to get punished with a home run. With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Here’s the third baseman. A walk and a pair of strikeouts that misses the zone. And that’s ball one. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. And the one foul ball there. [Applause] Swing and a miss. struck him out and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Joseph Ortiz the next to hit 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out, base is empty and a run in. You’re in the top of the ninth. Pirates. Next offering is in for a strike. on the ground to the left and it’s off the bag. Bare hands it. Tough play but no chance. That’s an infield single. Now it’s the second baseman Bryce Terang 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. First offering and it just misses. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. Run around the move. Fouls one off. Two and two. Ortiz leads off first with one away. [Applause] Misses off the inside. Full count. Three and two. Pirates and ball four to a board. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. First and second, one out. Now it’s going to be Isaac Collins. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Come on, Pirates. And it’s fouled away. All right, that one misses. Now one and two and there’s a fly ball deep right field. That’s down. One hops off the wall. One run across. He’s in there. It’s 71. gets the job done as he brings home a pair. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. There comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Number 47 departs and as he heads for the dugout we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. on the mound now for the Pirates. Bubba Chandler. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep this score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It So, a man aboard. So, here’s the Brewers DH. Jackson Chorio check swing and he went strike one. No ballrike. Runner at second here. One gone. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Man at second. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Pulled the string on the change up. Now the Brewers cleanup hitter, William Contrus. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Pirates. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. And that one is inside ball one. Next offering is in for a strike. swing at a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit coming home. He will score. It’s an RBI single and they’re pulling away up by seven now and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. runner at first with two away. S Freelick up now for the Brewers. Ball one there, [Music] two outs. He swings and fouls one off. [Music] Hard hit right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So four runs on four hits. No errors and a runner left on. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Brewers eight and the Pirates one. Now pitching back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Jacob Miserowski. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. Here’s Andrew McCutchen to hit Andrew McCen. Pitch misses. Ball one. Just missed. No strike. Foul ball. [Music] [Applause] on the ground to third. Fires over to first and McCutchen is out. Now batting second base. Up next for the Pirates, Nick Gonzalez. Gonzalez. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Off the mark there and a count. Two and one. Base is empty. One away here in the last half of inning number nine. Lifted in the air down the left side and that’ll fall for a base hit. Here we go. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Here’s the center fielder, O’Neal Cruz. [Music] First pitch. Not close. Gonzalez stands at first with one out. [Applause] Freeland takes it in for the owl. And there are two down. He was all over that fast right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. So, it’s their last chance in this one. And here’s the catcher, Joey Bart. [Applause] And a strike 01. [Applause] And there’s a ball. One. There’s the strike. The Pirates down to their final strike. Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it again. The Brewers up big in this one. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning in the dirt. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. Makes the catch. Ball game and the Brewers take this one in a blowout. Clearly the bats came to play today and the pitching and defense as well. We saw some outstanding plays. Great performances all the way around. Just one run allowed. They never gave the other side a chance and this one finishes with a final of eight to one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
