Maybe it was a good thing Michigan State powered down its offense in the final two quarters of its Week 1 win over Western Michigan. The Spartans needed the extra fireworks on Saturday night in a rematch with Boston College at Spartan Stadium, which now features pyrotechnics after touchdowns, wins and when the team runs onto the field.
MSU outlasted the Eagles, 42-40, in double-overtime, leaving them with the same kind of pit in their stomachs that the Spartans felt leaving Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, last September. Quarterback Aidan Chiles ran in the tying touchdown, and wide receiver Omari Kelly caught the game-winning two-point conversion after the Eagles’ two-point try was no good.
After serving their revenge for a 23-19 road loss to Boston College a year ago, the Spartans improved to 2-0 with next week’s game against Youngstown State remaining in the non-conference portion of the schedule.
