Drake Maye: “Just Got to be Better on My Part.” | Patriots Press Conference
Drake, uh, obviously you won the first half. Mike has been preaching to win the second half. Kind of what happened from your perspective. Were you able weren’t able to generate points with the offense, especially in the second half? Yeah, I think we just got to get got to be better. I think um, you know, my decision on the the first drive coming out was was the one that killed the drive and then from there kind of from got to get the first first down. And I think once we kind of get the first first down, I think we kind of move the ball move the ball well and uh you got in a rhythm and I think um just adjusting from halftime. I think I can do a better job of um you know getting the guys and making throws and um thought the guys up front battled hard. I think they they blocked them pretty well up front, you know, I thought and uh like I said, just get the first first down and from there I think just just make some better throws, you know, be more accurate and um yeah, I think getting points out of that first drive would have been huge. Uh could you take us through the play that led to the interception? Yeah. Um um yeah, I think I thought thought I had digs. Um you know, on the right and uh got, you know, kind of look back at it on the film, you don’t have a great look at it. Um you know, I think I I missed it high. Um I think I got to step, you know, step into it more. I think I may got hit up front, but um you know, that’s part of playing quarterback’s league. Yes, you got to step into the throw and and take hits and and be accurate and uh yeah, just there’s plays throughout the game you wish you had back and I can think of, you know, three or four from from me that can, you know, help dictate the game and um yeah, it’s just a bummer thinking back and and looking looking back at those on the far right, Drake, can you tell me what happened in the first half on the delay of game? It was third and 12 at the Vegas 17. You guys broke the huddle with about 14 seconds. What happened there? It looked like maybe you were trying to change the play. Yeah. Um, just trying to get in, uh, yeah, try trying to get into a good play. I think, uh, just got to be better with, you know, bring the back back in the back field, timing it up with the play clock. You know, I saw it at the end and, um, I think I surprised Garrett, you know, trying to get the ball. I think that’s what happened. And, uh, yeah, just got to be more efficient, getting out of the huddle. I think got to preach to those guys and um, it’ll give us more time to operate. I think that that starts with me and getting those guys in the huddle, getting them out of the huddle, kind of being efficient, and uh, just going from there. And how would you characterize your overall comfort level in in Josh’s offense in a real game for the first time? Yeah, I thought I mean I feel pretty good out there. I thought I was seeing it well. Um got to make some better throws, but um kind of the first time, you know, kind of adjusting from a halftime and and coming in from there. Um yeah, just got to just got to be better on my part, I think. Um you know, down in the red zone and and little things with details, you know, seven versus three is huge in this league. And uh just make every possession count. And I know there’s times that, you know, we we have looks that that we like and um I can think of, you know, letting a couple rip that I should have, you know, right now. So, uh just taking advantage of every every possession and uh just trying to, you know, build those guys and like I said, get the first first down. Drake, uh Mike in his opening remarks talked about kind of a sense of urgency and finding out, you know, who the team was this upcoming week and facing, you know, some adversity and how committed you guys are going to be to to getting better. How would you kind of describe this moment where it’s only one game, but does it feel like there’s an urgency to get better quickly? Yeah, no doubt. I think it’s urgency to um you know, don’t let this game, you know, kind of bleed into the next. I think we got a you know, chance for a division opponent. Um you know, we’re going down there and anytime you’re playing division opponent, you know, it matters. It means something and uh you know, bounce back and and realize that at the same time learn from it. you know, learn from as much as we can, but at the same time, you know, it’s one game and we gota, you know, get back and and uh it’s a long season, so get back at it and uh you know, do what I need to do to um you know, play better on my end and and uh help guys around me play better and then from there just um you know, lean into each other. I think that’s the big thing around here. You know, we spend so much time together um leaning to each other and and um you know, fix what we need to fix and learn from it and um hopefully you know, the goal is not to have it show up again. Uh Mike Vrabel mentioned in the second half that the Raiders were kind of switching up coverages and pressures. What did you see in the first half and what were some ways they adjusted in the second that you may have noticed? Yeah, I think you know any, you know, NFL team, they’re going to try to adjust at halftime and just try to give, you know, mix up looks and uh you bring some allout pressure in the second half. Um so just having answers um and just being quicker, I think just being quicker and make more throws. And I think it was maybe the second drive we out where we they messed up the kickoff and we had a um we had the ball in the 40 and I missed ton you know over the middle on the first down and the second down and had a chance. So uh yeah just plays like that you don’t realize that those plays are going to be the ones you look back on and and uh you know feel like man if we hit those it’s a different ball game. So, um, it’s a bummer looking back at that now, but yeah, I think just adjusting to to what they do. That’s the part of the chess match of of playing in National Football League. Drake, what did you see in the screen game and how can you guys get more out of that going forward? Yeah, I think uh I think those guys um you know, something you work on. I think it’s something that can be um you know, effective and impactful. And I think um it’s great to um it’s great when you got to establish the run and then make them panic drop and then um I think anything you know everything everything will kind of flow off establishing the run. I think they did a good job of um you know stopping the run and um from there I think just um just time it up and kind of longer getting the drive sometimes screens work better and um you know when they know the pass rush is coming. So just finding times when to call them and uh just trusting trusting coach on when he’s calling him and just try to execute. Drake, I’m curious. Um, it seemed like you were hitting multiple receivers uh today. It wasn’t just like one guy you were going to for the most part. How important is it uh to have numerous guys you can go to at any time? And just what did you feel you got out of that receiver room today? Yeah, I mean, I thought they brought it, you know, I thought they were bringing energy on the sideline. I thought they were, you know, being physical, getting open. um that could have gave them some more chances to make plays and uh you saw a lot of different guys make catches and I think they they they’re taking the challenge head on to to be a great room and and blocking the run game and um you know there’s things they can clean up and things that we can clean up together. So I’m looking forward to see what that room can do. But yeah, just just having everybody in the game plan and uh keeping everybody honest, not to just you know roll coverage over one guy or um you know double team one guy. You got to you know have answers and and have guys that make plays and those guys um thought they did that today. Two final questions about Drake. Obviously 10 points isn’t enough in this league. Uh but can you talk about it? It didn’t seem there were a lot of I don’t know if there were opportunities or an attempt to make that explosive play, long play, very few. I know B Kan said something about them playing deep safeties. Uh there just really wasn’t an attempt to really look long. Yeah. Um, you know, I think that’s something that that uh, you know, coach Carol and u, you know, Graham have done in their career is kind of drop, you know, have eyes on the quarterback and, uh, now that you hit, you know, the big play and, um, I think there’s chances, uh, you know, tonight I thought we had some, you know, 20 or 20 plus plays, but, you know, that’s not not a huge play. I think that just kind of let the game flow and I think, uh, you know, try to get the ball out quick. They got a good ed edge rusher up front and they changed in the second half they played a lot of you know two high um zone looks and it’s um you know tough to throw big plays you know against that. So uh no I think I can think back of one or two times where I know I could would have had a big play. Last question. Drake you’ve talked about being a little bit too amped up at the beginning of games maybe having some jitters. Uh I think you missed Mario on the first drive. Is that what was going on on that play or was something else? No, I think just adjusting to the kind of the weather out there. Um, you know, I think, you know, the first drive, I think you got teammates around you and you’re coming out there and um, you know, pregame and and throwing and feeling good. So, you know, I don’t think that was the case. I felt good out there today. Um, you know, feel like I had a good rhythm. um got got in a good rhythm that second drive and um from there just uh you was a boundary throw to to pop and um just miss him a little high but you know from there I think thought I was you know seeing it well and um I don’t think that was really you I felt pretty good out there on the first drive. Thank you. Thanks everyone.

Mac Jones was better
Give Drake 2 or 3 more years under Josh and he will be NFL ready.
listen to experience.
Maye had the bubble guts after his interception. McDaniels kept calling screens, no run game. Patriots Defense did a great job in the first half, but they had no help from the offense.
🌽Josh McDaniels eats corn the long way!🌽
It’s not his fault! It’s bad luck they had to play the raiders! They had no chance from the beginning
The kid just turned 23 over a week ago. He's smart enough to figure it out going forward.
I actually like Drake my only concern with him is his decision making
Another Mac Jones
I already knew in the preseason offense wasn't going to be good….
people glazing drake maye should be ashamed. if you saw games like commanders, chiefs, bills, falcons, buccaneers, colts, pitt and jets you can tell drake maye is not it!!!!! your eye test can tell you this guy is not it. even his td pass he passed it to a well covered douglas instead of a open crossing hollins. vrabel needs to trade for sanders or tank
Bring zappe back
Dont feel bad my guy, your oc just sucks…not your fault
Drake Maye do your job week two
Maye and the offense are a slower work in progress.
Technically not a good QB
Devito technically better QB
Maye looked lost and unsure on a lot of plays, and he resorted to running with the ball and guys were open
Drake Maye’s performance was exactly what his scouting report said. You guys should’ve easily traded down from 3 and collected talented instead of taking another QB project
Drake Maye is not a franchise QB. He choked out there. Consistently overthrew wide open targets and ran when he should have passed. I have no faith in this kid after what I watched. . We need a better QB!!
1-10 now as a starter. And his only win was a 19-3 victory at Chicago, who were in the midst of a 10 game losing streak.
Drake is a GREAT kid, but at some point you have to look at a QB is fundamentally doing wrong to lose 10 of his first 11 full games in the NFL. That's almost impossible to do.
Gotta be better getting old been using that same line since last season
Yall got to remember Drake didn’t start the first week of nfl last year ! He started in the middle, he getting used to starting for the beginning
