Top 25 Plays of August! (Kyle Schwarber’s four-homer game, Cal Raleigh’s historic homer, and more)
So it starts with Trent Gisham. He’s had a big series and that one right back where it came from. Knocked down and short and the throw to first is just in time. What a play. Mason Win handles a rocket up the middle and Gisham out on a bang bang play. Well, the arm of Mason Win shows up again. This one narrowly misses. Miles Mike was knocked down. thought it was a surefire hit, but the arm of Mason Win, who is well on his way to winning a gold glove, is the difference. Gilbert slides. Did he catch? He caught it. Wow. Drew Gilbert playing his first game in this ballpark in a very tough right field to play. and he went charging toward the line as the ball was knuckling and he stole head first. His feet were giving way [Applause] rips it again. Self-defense play by SOA and he makes the play to Burn. Ah, just just throw these on a on a video and watch him time after time. That’s why they call it the hot corner. But then he gets up and knows that he needs to one hop the throw. He can’t get it all the way over, but he’s from his knees. Little two hopper to get the out. Great pick by Wags. Able to pick it and complete the play. Oh, wow. Well, there’s some more comeback in this Brewers team. They’ve been doing it all month. Contras at the plate now. Oh, Contras. Highf fly ball deep left field. Did he get it? Yes, he did. It’s a walk-off home run. William Contraras goes wild. Bill and sends us home. What a finish. Two outs. Bottom of the ninth. First ever walk-off home run. Out to center. Michael charging. He got it. What a catch. What a comeback. Yeah, he’s just able to make up so much ground. Michael Harris ends the game with a sliding catch in center field and the Braves complete the comeback to even this series with the White Socks. Swings. Oh, what a play by Story. He throws to double him off at third. The Red Sox get out of the inning. What a play by Trevor Story. And he turns it into two. Trevor with the defense picking up Garrick Crochet. Beautiful. It’s going to be a double play. Come on. Story infield in. Dome to his left. Flips it to third and the inning is over. Great stuff. And the pitch swinging the ball, fisted in the air along the right field line. Tles retreating. Simeon going back. Garcia in. He slides. Did he catch it? did. He bobbled it and as the ball popped up right before it hit the turf, I think he caught it with his bare hand. What a catch. A little juggling with it. How did he keep that from hitting the turf? No, he just stuck the glove out in the last second. We see it bounce out. I don’t know how he he was able to get that bare hand on the play. And a ripple of anticipation moves through the ballpark with every Alonzo at bat. We’re going to see some history. Pete drives one to deep right center field headed back toward the wall. It’s out of here. Out of here. Pete Alonzo stands alone. The polar bear on his own private iceberg. Pete Alonzo the most prolific home run hitter in New York Mets history. 253 home runs. More than any Met has ever hit in the blue and orange. Brenon Doyle will lead off. He’s a number seven hitter and Andrew Heeney back to work. The left-hander for Pittsburgh. Fast ball swung on line sharply out to left field and this ball will bang off the wall and the Cruz will collect the rebound but with no urgency and so will get into third. Oh, and he’s out. That’s an incredible throw. He just baited up to go to third so he could throw him out. Yeah, I mean what a play. That’s incredible. Shades of Jose Guen here at Coorsfield in Denver from the wall. Cruz throws to Triolo and Doyle is out. My oh my. Werlander one strike away and from 3,500 lifetime. He throws. He struck him out swinging. Fast ball on the outside at 95. A milestone achievement for Justin Verlander. the 10 pitcher in Major League history with 3,500 strikeouts and the fans who realize that give him a standing ovation as he walks off the field and he expresses his appreciation in turn as he ds his cap. Two down, runner at first, one- nothing Cleveland. Sixth inning, Naylor sends one toward the gap in left center. Juan on the run. Quan dies. He makes a catch. Oh my lord, what a play by Quan. racing to the track in left center. A full out diving, sprawling catch. That’s how you win. Three straight gold gloves. That is the catch of the year by Quan or this game is tied. Ground ball to short. Ortiz diving staff. Gets up. Throws a first. Got him. Unbelievable play by Joey Ortiz. Bryce Dang telling Ortiz, “That’s nice. That is nice. Are you kidding me?” Challenges Marte with a fast ball. Ortiz getting it done. Right in the dirt in the grass. Replace your divot. No time. The highlight reel continues to grow for Joey Ortiz. Do not take him for granted, Brewers fans. Nobody’s playing that position like Joey is right now. It’s going to hit more to the gap. Robert Junior. Oh my. Another diving catch by Robert Jr. Nobody does it better in center field. And La Ponta. Well, that was a great run once again. An outstanding break. It’s not only the speed, it’s first step acceleration which helps you both in base stealing and in catching everything in the outfield. And that one was just an outstanding effort. It’s a pitch from an immaculate inning. Do it. Strike the ball. Slider. Swing and miss. The O2. Stuck him out. He strikes out the side. Kitridge bounces back from last night. Outstanding work. The immaculate inning. Got him with a slider off the outside. Kitridge strikes out the side here in the top half of the seventh inning. Nine pitches. All strikes. And how about Kitridge? He gives up four and a third of an inning last night. He comes back today and he strikes out the side in the seventh. Sometimes this game just doesn’t make any sense. Leo Pagarro has driven in all the runs for the Pirates today on a couple of home runs. Fly ball left field pretty deep. Leo Pagarro a three homer game for Peggy. Goodness gracious. It is eight to five. He has driven in all five runs. Three home runs. and now four on this trip. They have a series, have a road trip, young man. Wow. First Pirate in three years with a three home run game. Bangali has been on a tear. First game in the leadoff spot. Well, he’s got two solo homers to his name tonight. This one in the air from Shade to center field. Going back is Jacob Young. at another a three homer game for Sha Langalers. And we’re not even in Texas. That’s where those typically happen. What an incredible display at the top of the lineup for Shay Bangalers. That is three times tonight. Man oh man. Here on this Sunday afternoon, Stanton sends this one to right field. Toffman at the warning track. Oh, what a grab at the wall. Tauman brings it back to Rob Stanton. He caught it. He just took away a home run from Stanton. It didn’t look like that ball was going to carry and it hit a jetream and thank goodness Mike Tman knew where to be when that one came down. What a beautiful play by the right fielder for the White Sox. Oh, you aren’t kidding. Two outs in the ninth and McNeel into center field. A base hit. Perkins throw to the plate on a hop. The tag. He is out. Ball game over. Blake Perkins loads up the rifle and finishes this game. What a throw and what a way to end the ball game. A thrilling way to win this game. Scott hitting .234 on the season with seven home runs. And Scott one towards the gap. This one’s got trouble written on it. The dive and the catch is made. Oh my goodness. I think it’s Riley Green who has it as he dove and got right in front of Verling. What a catch. He made the catch. Incredible. Riley Green Beerling both going for the ball. Riley Green never gave up on it. He makes a sensational diving backhanded grab. Wow. There’s nothing there other than sure will. A rookie, a homegrown rookie right here from Burlington, Ontario going to face Maxer for his first big league in bout. And he’s swinging at the first pitch. Hits it to left center and he’s rubbed. Absolutely robbed by Davis Schneider. Full extension and he takes a hit away from Owen Casey in his first big league at bat. I mean, that’s as good as it gets out there in the outfield. Oh, are you kidding me? Davis Schneider into the gap to take one away from Casey. One of his best defensive plays of his career. Logan Webb’s pitch to Yandi Diaz is driven out towards right center field and deep chasing after a Jung-H Lee and he’ll go all the way out into far right center field and make the catch. He went down into a slide to catch it and gets up kind of slowly. I don’t know if he jammed his knee into the dirt. Jungu I, you know, watching it, he ended up losing the ball. Why he got up slowly is the ball came out of his glove and he he pinched it in between his legs. Did that Did that end up between his legs? And I think he caught him between the knees. He did between the knees. I don’t care what anybody says. That’s the catch of the decade. Not of the year, not of the day, not of the week, not of the home stand, the decade. One down in the first for Raphael Deers. [Applause] High drive right field back goes Fernando at the wall. He leaps and makes the catch. Oh, Nando up into the air. Makes the catch at the wall. That’s platinum right there, folks. Picture perfect. Snatch it back. That’s big league. And that’s a big league. hang with him forever. Fernando Tatis over the right field wall. Did it a couple of years ago out there in almost the exact same spot and one of the great home run robberies you will see this season. What a play. And guess who’s coming up again? Cal Raleigh because of the hit by Randy. Cal blast off left field. There it goes. Cal Raleigh. His 49th home run. Storybook season by Cal Raleigh. He has done it. The most home runs all time in a single season by a major league catcher. Once in a lifetime kind of stuff from Cal Raleigh. Got a good crowd here thus far for the Saturday Madden. That ball is deep profar and the wall. He brought it back. That was super human. Watch how high he gets up over the wall and not just up but deep. Unbelievable. Jereen Proar with a magic trick at the top of the left field wall to rob Augustine Ramirez who is stunned. He’s just walking off the field. The crowd just got to look at it on the video replay and it just took their breath away. Well, the crowd is excited right now because Schwarber is on four home run watch. He’s got three already tonight. That one’s drilled deep to right field. He has done it. Four home runs in a game. A threerun home run. It’s his fourth home run of the night. as Kyle Schwarber becomes the first Philly since Michael Jack Schmidt to hit four homers in a game. It’s a threerun home run that gives him nine runs batted in tonight. The 21st player in modern major league history to hit four homers in a game. That was cool. [Music] Hey. [Music] Hey.
