🔴LIVE 🔴Houston Astros vs Toronto Blue Jays /September 08/ Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
just about set to go now. And today’s starter, Max Scherzer. And as usual with him singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boog. He’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career. So, expect to see more of the same in this one. Okay, all set to go. And the batter will be the shortstop, Jeremy Pñena. Just off the outside edge and we are underway. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one. Swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. Oh, that’s that slerf right there. He threw it extremely well. You talk about just a ton of break. So tough to get that barrel to up the middle. Clement on the run. Throw to first. Nicely done for the out. Now we check out the Astros lineup. And singing, I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in a lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. Your Don Alvarez, the next to hit, takes outside. That one misses two and 0. Check swing called strike. misses off the inside and the count is three and one. If you’re going to miss, you want to miss outside the zone. When you miss inside the zone, it’s trouble. Late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there. Fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second. And that’s a two bagger. And if you’re the pitcher, you can’t be frustrated. You know, this is going to be the toughest batter that you face tonight. And you’re going to have to face him a couple of times. So, you just tip your cap and hope that you can get the next guy out. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Foul ball there. Altuve officially joined the 2000 hit club in 2023 with every career hit as a Houston Astro. Third player in club history with 2,000 hits and 200 home runs. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Bigio, those are the two others. And that’s some great company. Boo. the 01 and there’s a ball. Really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Alvarez over at second. One down. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. They just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to. Hit hard. Should be extra bases. Coming around third is Alvarez. He’ll score. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on you. Just got to battle. North Korea. One out, runner at second. And here comes Carlos Koreah. That one missing inside. Runner at second here. One gone. And a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. One out and a runner at second. On to France. That takes care of Koreah. Fifth base, Christian Walker. And now it’s Christian Walker. So clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. And a big swing and a miss. Two outs and one in scoring position. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fouls it back with two strikes. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. at the belt and fires. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point. Battling here as he fouls it away. The O2 fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s gonna blink first. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. That one outside. And that is ball one. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One run, a pair of hits, no errors, and one left on. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Astros one and the Jays nothing. Back here with my pal Singi getting the nod in this one. Lance McCullers’s Jr. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. And now for the Jays, George Springer. Come on, George. And that drops in for a strike. That one finds the zone. 0 and two. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Swings and misses. Had him out front for strike three. Oh, that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie. And you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. Davis Schneider next up for the Blue Jays. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One out. Base is empty. out in front with the swing and that is strike one. Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter. Any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot, it’s a two or three-run homer. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. the next to hit takes ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. just missed. First two hitters get punched out on strikes. Take some notes from the dugout. When you get your chance, go up there and hit the ball hard somewhere. The 20 is in for a strike. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Alejandro Kirk up next. McCullers winds fires and that’s ball four. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Man at first and now Alejandro Kirk and delivers outside. Let’s go Alejandro. And that misses. And the count is two and0. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Two outs. Slice to right. Smith makes the catch and that is that. Blue Jays held in check. They trail here one- nothing. Second inning set to go. And stepping in is the speedy Jake Meyers. Max Scherzer back to work. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. Popped up. Connor Falefa. He makes the grab and there’s one down. Batting seventh catcher. So next up for Houston, Yiner Diaz singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Toronto. That’s in for a strike. Diaz measures 6 feet even, 195 lbs, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. That breaking ball is in for a strike, and quickly it is nothing at two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. One, two, three go the Astros, but they hold a one- nothing lead. Bottom of the second. And now for the Jays, Ernie Clement. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. And ball one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Stepping in, Ty France. That one’s in there and it’s 0 and one. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. That’s a little bit low. Way to lay off that pitch down. Gary Simmons has the plate duty in this one. Well, with Simmons, it’s not always your standard strike zone. Boog. It kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others. But I think the important thing is he doesn’t get labeled as inconsistent. So, you got to stay ready up there. Next pitch is outside. Yeah. One of those umpires you just have to know what to expect, right? Exactly. Check swing called stride. Still two and two after the foul ball with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. in the air out towards left center. He’s got it. And there’s one away. Batty seven, second baseman, Isaiah Kerfa. Here is Isaiah Ker Falefa. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. He was late there. Strike one. One’s the count and that’s outside and one and one runner on the go. Pitching for a strike. Throw save. That’s a stolen base. Well, with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate, man, it’s a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude. Maybe more than anything, it prevents teams from just testing him, thinking that they can even steal the base. But right here, they successfully move that runner up to scoring position. Good job. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Clement leads off second with one gone in the inning. This one in the dirt. Man at second on the ground right side and he handles it himself for the out. Batting eight, left fielder Nathan Lucas. And next for Toronto, Nathan Lucas. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. That one drilled left field. Base hit into the outfield. The tying run is in to score from third. And it’s an RBI single. It’s 1-1. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Two outs, runner on first. So up next for Toronto, Miles Straw swinging a miss. 0 and one. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Yo, one got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. All you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch. Get yourself out of the jam, back into the dugout. The 02 in the air right field and the inning is over. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. All even at one a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now in Toronto. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. Mauricio Dub. Max Scherzer goes to work. That one missed. Rip to short. Slings to first. One up, one down. Now batting shortstop Jeremy Pñena. Back to the top of the lineup. And now Jeremy Pñena. grounded out to short in his first trip right through there for a strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Tied up here in the early going. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And the 02 a short stop takes a ball. One ball, two strikes. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. That K is his third of the game. Yeah, that’s pretty sick. Late cutting action to get the swing and miss right there. I mean, that’s just really hard to account for as a hitter when you’re seeing the fast ball all the way and then just at the last moment, it darts away from you and you can’t reach it. Now it’s Yordon Alvarez. A double and a run scored his first time up. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. Two down. Nobody on. Fouled off to the right. Sherzer winds, kicks, fires, and there’s a rocket into the outfield around first. Heading for two. in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. So, runner at second, two down. Jose Altuve up to hit here. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. All one. No strike. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Breaking ball through there for a strike. breaks his bat on to France and they get out tub for the out number three. So the Astros leave one score remains tied 1-1 as we go to the last of the third. Now it’s the right fielder George Springer. Springer. McCullers back to work. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So a man on base to start the inning. He was all over that one. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Now, the third baseman, Davis Schneider, that catches the corner. Swang and a miss and it’s 0 and two. Nobody out. runner at first. In the dirt and the runner stays where he is swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well done behind the dish. Well, obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone by the time it got to the plate. And people at home watching are thinking, “What’s he swinging at?” But I’ll tell you, some of the break guys snap off these days is just devastating. It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that’s going to end up. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He reached out to walk his first time. Pitch misses. Ball one. Man at first, one away. And now two and nothing. McCull’s a move to first and Springer’s in there safely. Springer on the run. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Got him. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Backto back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Now, the Toronto four-hole hitter, Alejandro Kirk. He’s 0 for one. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win. every manager’s dream. And another ball. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. The next offering misses. Three balls, no strikes. And there’s the automatic. Springer off of first with two away. Swinging a ground ball. Fair ball. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. How batting the short turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. First and second, two outs. And now the shorts stop. Ernie Clement, a single and a run scored. And a walk. Gets the outside corner with that one. First and second, two down here in the last half of the third. That’s in there. That is strike two. Well, this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around. He’s got two outs now ahead in this count and he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence. That’s smashed towards center. Drops into the glove and that’s the third out. Blue Jays leave a pair. Score remains deadlocked at one. And we’re back as we go to the top of the fourth. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Carlos Kareah. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. One of the things with Koreah, the impact he makes not just on offense but defense as well. A guy who’s won a platinum glove as the best defender in the American League. Probably my favorite note though on Carlos Koreah. He likes to before games go to a regular old batting cage and take BP with his dad. And that is out of play on the ground. Come on. Come on. And he can’t come up with it. Now batting first Christian Walker. Christian Walker now at the plate. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. swinging a miss as he was late. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So when you have somebody so solid over there, uh you can breathe a little easier. Runner on the go line and a base hit into right. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. Meyers in the box now takes strike one. Yeah, baby. Come on. Next offering is downstairs. No outs. Runners at first and second. That one’s in there. It’s a ball in two strikes. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. really good slider. He’s up there just hoping that it ends up off the plate away. Rolled over to third. Can’t pick it up with the bare hand. And everyone’s safe. They’re loaded. Now batting catcher Yer Diaz. And next to hit for Houston, Yiner Diaz. Golden opportunity right here. Ground ball left side. Base hit. One run in already. The throw in. Safe and the runner from second scores on the play. And they take a two-run lead. Well, he was a little off balance. He got the front foot down, but was so great at keeping the hands back and allowed him still to get good wood to this baseball. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. And stepping in for the Astros, Cam Smith. 0 for one so far. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And there’s a foul ball. So, here’s Sherzer and a swing and a miss. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Mauricio Dubon will hit next. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Straw calls it in. Two away. Now batting shortstop Jeremy. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the Astros leadoff man, Jeremy Pñena. Bowl for two in this one. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one. Two on, two outs. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. And that one wrapped foul. Sherzer deals. And now it’s even up. Meyers at second. Diaz on first with two down. Sherzer gets the punch out. Inning over and it could have been worse. But two runs for him and they jump ahead to the bottom of inning number four now. It’s the Astros three and the Blue Jays won. Bottom of the fourth and now the first baseman Ty France. first baseman. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shut down inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Well, these Blue Jays just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. Now batting Isaiah Ker Falefa up to the plate. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Rudder at first with no outs here. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Wow. Just great bite to that slider. Broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing. You know, as a hitter, that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it. You know that, but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. RBI single his last time up and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter and the one. There’s the strike. ball one there. The Jays down by a pair. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Ground ball left side could be two. Throws to second for one to Walker and that’s two. One hit in the inning but no one left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Astros three and the Blue Jays one. Back here at Rogers Center, Air Jordon steps in to take his hat. Alvarez. Alvarez in his sixth season, 27 years old. And though usually in left field, today he’s the designated hitter. Late with the swing there. Some guys don’t like not being able to play defense because it helps him to stay in the rhythm. So for him to be the DH, we’ll see if he gets a routine together. Just missed. Good blue. Next pitch inside and that’s ball three. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Swings through that. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. And down on strikes he goes. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Max Scherzer is done. And he kept him in it even though he’s in line for the loss right now. New arm when we come back. Now pitching new pitcher now for the Jays, Shane Bieber coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Here’s the left fielder, Jose Altuve. line drive and George makes the grab. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Let’s go. Koreah stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Braden Fiser getting loose out there. Dominguez also getting ready. Hit hard on the ground to short throws to first in time and Kareah retired and it’s a one two3 inning. Nothing doing there for Houston and the score stays three to one. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Miles Straw. First pitch just misses. Well, these Jays as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. That one finds the corner and the count is one and one. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Here’s a one, two, and foul ball. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nod. So now back to the top of the order. And the batter is George Springer, one for two. That missed by a lot. Ball one. Ground ball right side. Could be two to second. That’s one to Walker. And that’s two. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s the third baseman, Davis Schneider, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. First offering misses badly for ball one. Oh, I think the key, I mean, if he can get through one more inning. Anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And that one is inside. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at two and 0. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. waiting to hit for Toronto. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Right through there for a strike. And that’s ball four. Tried another slider, but it missed the plate. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. MVP Vlatty stands in now and watches strike one. Yeah, Toronto outed into left center for a line drive base hit and now first and second with two outs in there safely. Now batting catcher Alejandro manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. McCullers gets the hook and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. The Astros turn to a new arm on the mound. Hunter Brown. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid. So, they feel great about handing the ball over to him. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Alejandro Kirk digs in now. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Runners at the corners with two outs. the O2. That one just misses. That was pretty close on the inside. And obviously he’s not too happy with the call out there on the mound as he lets the umpire hear it a little bit. This is where you can’t let that frustration compound itself though. You got to let it out and move on. Next offering upstairs lined and that’s a base hit. Runner from third in to score. It’s an RBI single and it’s a one-run game. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. And now for the Jays. Ernie Clement. Late swing. Fouled off. Two on, two outs to the right side. Walker, he takes it on his own. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. All set for the top of the six. And here’s the first baseman, Christian Walker. Bieber back to work. And that clips the inside corner. Well, these Astros digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. And that one a little below the knees and count one and two. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. And now Jake Meyers first pitch misses. He’s one of those Dave Mccardi, Mark Carryon, Ricky Henderson types. Throw left, bat right. You make a note of those guys because it’s just different. It’s like, man, you’re left-handed, but you hit right-handed. Cut on and lifted in the air. Springer there makes the catch. Out number two. Up next for the Astros catcher. So, digging in, Yiner Diaz. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. You come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. On to France. Third out and that ends the frame. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Astros three and the Blue Jays two. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Ty France. Well, I’ll say this as a former position player and base steeler. When you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down now. A pop up on the infield. Dubong brings it in and there’s one down. Up next for the Blue Jays, second base Isaiah Isaiah Ker Falefa next up for the Blue Jays. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Swang and a miss. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. And that misses two and one. Blue Jays down a run. This one in the air right field and it drops in. So a man aboard now with one away. recognized the break on that pitch early and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in. You know, it’s easy to bail on those front door breaking balls, but a great job right there of letting it travel then unloading a nice balanced swing. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Hunter Brown out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, a new pitcher out of the bullpen for the Astros, Frer Valdez. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. One down. Now, the left fielder, Nathan Lucas. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. One ball, one strike. Step off. Throw to first. Connor Falefa dives back in. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. Got him swinging for the strikeout. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. And here is Miles Straw Center. Miles Straw on the ground to the left in plenty of time to first. And that is that one left for Toronto and it’s still a 32 ball game. Back now in Toronto, top of inning number seven. And stepping in for the Astros, Cam Smith. Fouled off. He was late and that one ripped into right and it stays fair around first and hustling for second and he starts the seventh with a leadoff double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Mauricio Dubon the next to hiton. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. There’s the strike. Smith leads off second with nobody out. Come on, Toronto. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield coming home. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. So next up for Houston, Jeremy Pñena 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. out to center. Puts it away for the out. Up next for the Astros, the designated hitter, Jordon Alvarez. Here’s Yordon Alvarez. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. That misses. Now one and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. That one not close. And it’s two and two. One run across in the frame so far here in the top half of inning number seven. got him swinging. He swung over top of the curveball. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Next to hit, Jose Altuve. Ball one, no strikes. just missed. Pitch is in there and the count two and one. That one ripped. nabs it and that’ll do it. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now 42. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Craig Kimbell. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. So, back to the top of the order. Here’s George Springer, one for three. And a breaking ball misses outside. There’s the strike. That misses the zone. Now two balls in a strike. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Stays alive. cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Some high cheese for strike three. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. I mean, you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Now here is Davis Schneider. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Base is empty. One away here. The bottom of the seventh. Squang and a highf fly ball. Well struck that one back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting the designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now singing he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Well, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Go Toronto. Sliced hard but foul. Two outs. And that’s a little high. you get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you if you will. That one fouled off. Two and two and a sweeper misses for a ball. Alejandro Kirk would be next if they can extend the inning. Exactly the kind of bat you need in a clutch situation like this. Got to do whatever it takes to give him a chance and they’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Blue gets a piece and stays alive. Kimbro leans over that right arm dangling too high and it’s ball four and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Craig Kimell won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Astros go to the pen and here comes Steven Ochre. He last pitched two days ago. second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play, a game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. So, a man at first, the batter now, Alejandro Kirk. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game. just missed. Really good athlete. And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well. Really quick feet. He’s able to recogn swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Vlatty coming around third. He’ll score. Comes through with the RBI. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. So the tying run in scoring position now. And next for Toronto, Ernie Clement chopped out in front of the plate. Tosses to first that ends the inning and they limit the damage. The Jays push across a run on this double. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Ryan Bari and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Ryan Bar. Here’s Carlos Kareah for three in this one. Carlos Koreah. And that drops in for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Louis Varand appears to be getting loose. Fischer warming up as well. The one tap foul at the plate. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field and George makes the grab. One away. Up next for the Astros, first baseman Christian. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. Baraki measures 6’4 in 30 years old now. He joined the team as a free agent and that’s in the dirt. And another ball. Breaking ball in there for a strike. In the air. Foul off first. two away. Now batting center fielder Jake. And now the center fielder Jake Meyers singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean watching him track balls in the outfield. It is beautiful. And that one missing inside a sharp slider. He’s so solid. calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air and you just automatically assume that it’s an out every time it’s hit in the air. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands the 1-1 and that’s in for a strike. There’s one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw and they can’t get the out. Now batting catcher Yer Diaz. So two down. Yiner Diaz up next for the Astros. swinging a ground ball up the middle and that one finds its way through. So that’s two straight two out hits. Back-to-back singles. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. So up next, Cam Smith. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. Foul tip and he hangs on. That’s a strike out. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Brian King. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, one-run game. And now for the Jays. Ty France. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. First pitch and he just misses. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Canada. Looking to get the tying run on base high. swinging a drive deep right field. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Safe at second with nobody out. And he represents the tying run. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Now, a huge at bat in this game coming up. Runner in scoring position. No outs. So, up next for Toron drilled in the air high and deep right field. Gone. He dinks it off the foul pole. And they add a pair. It’s 54. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath. breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something. But really, it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. And now Nathan Lucas in there and it’s 0 and one. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Action in the pen down there. Brian Abrau, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. That just misses and the count is one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. And now the count is even. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning near the bottom half of the eighth inning. swing and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Brian King will depart and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. Now pitching Daniel de los Santos takes over on the mound. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Miles Straw getting ready to hit. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. first offering and it just misses. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. Takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. Now batting right fielder George Springer and it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. First pitch just misses and downstairs. Next offering is in for a strike. Nasty 20 slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Next pitch misses way outside. Laser could be trouble now. He’ll turn for second and that’s a double. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. So, runner at second, two down. Schneider will hit next. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. That one hammered center field. That’s back. Tattooed and gone. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 74. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. That home run was a no doubter. As we dive into the numbers with Stackcast. Crushed Boo. Just absolutely crushed. 112 miles per hour on the exit VO and like you said, no doubt about that one. Plenty of launch angle to give it that backspin as well. And that carried way over the wall. Vlatty Jr. stepping to the dish now. And that one fouled off. 01 now. Foul ball. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Foul ball still a one and two count and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Popped up to the left into foul ground. makes the play and it’s out number three. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. Last chance coming up here for the Astros. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Jeff Hoffman. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball. And we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. Now it’s the second base, Mauricio Dubon. Come on, let’s go. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and0. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. Big at bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. That’s back. And that one hops the wall. And that’s a leadoff double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Really important at bat coming up now. So, digging in Jeremy Pñena. Swinging a foul out of play. Runner at second. Nobody out. You can do it. Next offering is in for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat. If he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. And a swing and a miss. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away. Did a nice job right there. Up the middle. Connor Falefa to first and they get the out on Alvarez. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Astros down to their last out. Jose Altuve up next for the Astros. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and one. They’re down to their final strike. One strike away. That’s outside. And that’s ball one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Runner from third comes across. It’s an RBI single. And now just a two-run deficit. Everything came together for him. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Two outs, runner at first. Now Kareah up to hit. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one with the tying run at the plate here in the top of the ninth. Fast for a strike. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would had a chance. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. Ball game. Well, this was a fun game all the way around. We saw plenty of action. 12 runs total on the board, but a pretty close finish at the end. A 75 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
