Kurt Warner on Justin Herbert’s Adjustment to Chargers’ Run-First Approach | The Rich Eisen Show

And then when we talked to Herbert, you know, um he he’s he’s approached seems very locked in, right? Um and then with him, I was stunned when as I’m researching for this because, you know, I’m I’m a professional. Um to see that he’s got the most passing yards of anybody in the history of the league through five seasons, but he hasn’t thrown for 4,000 in the last two. of his first 62 games of his career, 58 featured a game in which he attempted it to throw it 30 times or more. Only 10 of 17 last year. Do you think he likes playing like this? Kurt, you know, he didn’t give any sense of it. I mean, we were hunting and pecking during the interview, but very interesting. you I talked to Greg Roman who’s the offensive coordinator um you know with the Chargers and I asked him okay what kind of adjustment and what was that like in the first year in in terms of calling plays and knowing you’ve got this guy that can chuck it all over the yard and is so talented and and then you know Jim Harbaugh comes in and we know how he wants to play is you know control the line of scrimmage and he said what we had to preach to Justin was we are calling plays to win we’re not calling plays for yards were calling plays to win. And it took Justin some time to understand what exactly that means. You know, what does that mean for me? Because the first few years of my career, I’m chucking it all over and I’m setting records and and so so what do you mean winning? You know, because all quarter of us, all of us think winning means let me throw the put the ball in my hand,000 yard season and 5,000 to win and all quarterbacks think that. But it was starting to understand the theory behind what they’re doing and the purpose of every single throw. And so, um, you know, we did talk to Jim Harbaugh. I asked him, “Are you tempted to want to spread it out and throw it because you’ve got, you know, this guy at quarterback?” And he said, “I am tempted and I’m not opposed to that, even though we know that’s not how he wants to play.” Okay. So, there’s such high regard for Justin Herbert that he can wing it all over if they need to. But their formula formula is good defense, run the football, and then make your big plays off of that. And I do believe that’s how they’re going to try to play this game and try to play the season knowing that they’ve got that ace in their back pocket. If they have to spread it around and throw it, they’ve got a guy that can do that. Yeah. And, you know, um, don’t turn it over. just three interceptions for Herbert and the lowest in number of turnovers in the AFC last year for the Chargers. And then to give you an idea of like, well, they’re gonna spread out and wing it. Their first round choice was Omar and Hampton. Um, who they’re going to roll downhill, man. And then and then one of the big moves they made in free agency was let’s get Naji Harris. So, gives you an idea of we’re still going to play the same way. They want to play that way, you know, and and if Herbert throws for 4,000 yards on top of it, then so be it. Bringing back Keenan Allen as well. So, it’ll be interesting to see Keenan Allen back and with his lightning bolts tomorrow night. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

  1. Hey RES channel! I know you don’t usually respond to youtube comments or anything and I totally understand why that is. But maybe, in this situation, you can give us an update on when the audio will be fixed. Thanks!

  2. I came here just to let Eisens Team know the audio (from YouTube) is nowhere near as crisp as before. I now see others have same issue. I first noticed the issue with Pablo's interview.

  3. No, I don’t think the audio isn’t bc of the Disney/ESPN change, though the timing sees so. It’s probably because they’re not in their usual studio. They’re in Brazil, because Rich is broadcasting the Friday Night game NFL game.

Should be back to normal in a few days, my friends

  4. LOL at Greg Roman…..Calling plays to win became more throws for Herbert as the season went on because they couldn't run the ball. The problem was that all he had was a rookie McConkey.

  5. Did all this research … but forgot to mention he missed like the last 6 games of 2023… missed a bunch of training camp in 2024 and wasn’t even healthy until week 7 so they couldn’t open up the playbook 🙄.. my god

  6. 1. Kurt Warner hates Justin Herbert. He made one negative comment after the next last night. Nit picking every little thing. Even though Herbert was awesome and won the game.

    2. Chargers were not run first last night they were pass first. Everything these people say in this episode is complete bullshit.

  7. Kurt tells it like Justin is a selfish player…….and needed to be educated on how to win…the guy has been in 4 systems in 5 years…ridiculous…last night was sweet.⚡️

  8. Herbert needs a coach who knows what he is doing and hopefully that’s Harbaugh! Anthony Lynn didn’t even recognise what he had in Herbert and Brandon Staley was a disaster as a head coach. Would be great to see Herbert winning.
