CHAOS: Astros SILENCE Doubters with Gritty Comeback Win Against Yankees

That was a wild one. And as we say in Houston, Yordon was tipping on four fours. What a great game tonight for the Astros. They almost lost it. Let’s talk about a big win versus the Yankees right now. Yel Diaz. This is Locked On Astros. Hello and welcome to Locked on Astros, your daily Astros podcast. Here are your hosts, Eric the Man. This felt like the back and forth game we or maybe not the back and forth game we saw versus Dodgers in 2017, but it got a little tense at the end, but the Astros had a comeback versus the New York Yankees. We’ll go and talk about uh Jason Alexander, another great not great, but another decent outing and the offense came through. Um Yordan Alvarez, he led the offense of four hits. He almost had his fifth hit today. Unfortunately, he fell short. And also, we’ll go ahead and talk about Esacho Prades. Is there a chance that he comes back this year? Well, we’ll have to talk about that on this edition of the Lockdown Astros podcast. Yeah, definitely. Um, let’s start with Jason Alexander tonight. Um, if if we could because um you know, he he has been one of the hallmarks of 2025. you know, lately, um, this is the fourth straight start where he’s given up, um, at least two runs. He’s given up three runs in his last two starts and two runs in his previous two. So, he’s been a little susceptible to giving up runs. He had given up a couple runs here or there. Um, he did only go five innings. It wasn’t detrime so detrimental that the Astros, you know, ever got in a hole that they couldn’t climb out of tonight. They came back and they scratched and clawed. And this is the kind of game you want to see your team win, especially after the way you lost last night with all the news and all the hubbhub and all the national media attention. I mean, everybody having a comment and a concern about the Astros Clubhouse and the Astros Clubhouse blowing it off and then anytime you had an opinion about it, people are like, “Oh, but you don’t know what you’re talking about.” And everybody was a was a situational savant. But tonight’s game is exactly what this team can do. They can go through trouble. They can go through storms. And they can come out of it. And when they come out of it, they write the ship. And we’ll talk later about who was one of the main catalysts behind that. But Eric, yeah, Jason Alexander gave up some runs, but it wasn’t terrible. He needs to be a little bit sharper, but I’ll take it. Yeah. So the Astros found themselves down. It was basically uh three to nothing. Then they scored a run and then from there they tied it in the uh seventh in sorry in the sixth inning. Uh they tied it um no actually sorry they tied it in the seventh inning but basically in the eighth inning they went ahead and took the four-run lead at that point. It was four to four then they took the 8-4 lead. Thankfully, they did because Brian Abrau, for some reason, Joe Spatada likes to bring in his closer with a fourrun uh lead in games. But uh so Brian Abrau gives up a three-run home run. Of course, this is kind of what Mitch Williams where you have to kind of make it a little wild thing. Speaking of wild thing, we’ll have to talk about the walks that the Astros got and Aaron Boone got tossed. Everybody’s getting tossed. It’s like this was a wild and crazy game, but this is the type of game that the Astros needed to win because not only did they get a win over the Yankees who are they’re trying to either keep ahead of or try to catch up to, however you want to look at it, but also the Mariners and the Rangers both lose. So, you gain a game on both of them. So now the Mariners are now four games behind the Astros and the Rangers scoot back five and a half games behind the Astros. So this comeback victory was very much needed and um the it was very hard fought and this was they could have given up especially um getting down early. This is a that sometimes the Astros tend to be like you know what we can’t do anything. uh were too far behind. Like um we had our starter give up six runs. There was no chance. But this team really showed some grit today and that’s what this episode is sponsored by is grit. The offense really came in clutch. Yeah, definitely. Um when you look at Brian Abrau, this is interesting. I was I was looking at his stats tonight um before I even logged in with you. So he gave up three runs today. Okay. So by his statistical output, he’s never given up more than three runs in a month. So that means Brandon Brau is done giving up runs for September. He got it out of the way. He went August 1st through August 28th without giving up a run, Eric. He gave up three runs August 30th. Then he gave up three runs in July. He gave up two runs in June, two runs in May, and three runs in April. So, if he continues to be consistent, then it looks like Brian Abrau is done giving up runs for September. And this bullpin, the reason why I say that is because this bullpin is key. I mean, you do have the Rangers that are trying to make a legitimate chase, trying to get back into the race. They do have an offense. You’ve got to have your backend guys taking care of business. And tomorrow night, um, you’re going to hear Robert Flores from MLB Network at 6 o’clock. We’re airing it tomorrow night. I sat down with Robert Flores, and one of the things he touches on is he touches on the bullpen of the Houston Astros. So, y’all will have to um watch that tomorrow night before the game. Come to our channel, Locked on Astros, for your pregame with myself and Robert Flores. All right. So, a lot of people are asking what the Astros magic number is. Apparently, it’s 19. So they’re they need the any combination of Astros wins or Mariners losses that add up to 19. Okay, between now and the end of the season, that’s how they can clinch the American uh the American League West or at least clinch the wild card situation. So, um, but definitely, uh, this I think this is mostly just for division, but any win at this point is key, but the main thing is the Mariners keep on playing bad baseball and they doing it at a very critical time for the Houston Astros because they haven’t been playing their best baseball recently either. And while the Rangers have been playing pretty good baseball, but now they’ve lost two games in a row. So maybe this game, a game like this where you had to come back from behind, battle some controversy. And I know a lot of people were like, why didn’t Alvarez start yesterday’s game? If he’s not healthy, why is he up here and all this stuff? Well, you saw what he did. We’ll talk about what he did in a second, but uh this what the Astros did today. Maybe this is what gets the offense going. forget what they did the other day where they uh they had the 12 hits and they scored eight runs. I think what they did tonight was more impressive because they had to come back and do it. No, definitely. And um you know, I think you said it well and you know this this is a victory. This is a uh you and I spoke about it before we came on air. This is a playoff type atmosphere. This is you know the Yankees are fighters. The Yankees don’t just lay down. But we have to say a special thank you to the men in blue tonight because the men in blue tonight helped the Astros win. Not the Astros, the umpires. Not you, Eric. The umpires. If you would have been the umpire, I’d buy you a steak dinner. My cap to him, guys. Oh, go I thought you were taking credit. Hey, you know what? Wherever they are, I’ll buy them a steak dinner. That was a phenomenal performance. Boon had plenty of reason to be upset. I mean, even the last at bat, Jazz Sism, I think should have walked. Jordan Alvarez probably should have struck out, but hey, when it goes our way, it’s I’m not I’m not mad about it. I’m not mad about it. Yeah, but I’m pretty sure Aaron Boon would be mad that the sky is blue at the same time. So, he argues about everything. I know, but but the calls that he was arguing were game altering, right? You know, and so and so you can’t look look sometimes some you know it’s great to be good but sometimes it’s even better to be lucky and luck and talent sometimes win. Brett speaking of being good we’re going to talk about somebody who’s really good next on the Lockdown Astros podcast. Thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. And uh we are talking we’re trying to avoid the big elephant in the room, what everybody’s been talking about for the past 24 hours. We want to do what Joe Espada wants us to do. We want to be good podcasters and put it uh put it behind them. The whole from Valdez versus Are people asking about it? Huh? Are people asking about it? Well, yeah, people are still asking about it and in the in the show. Oh, no. No. I’m just saying that we’re trying not to talk about it. We may talk about it at the end of the game, but I did tease before the break about a player being good. And I see a lot of people mentioning Pena. Yes, he is good. He is uh he probably was a big reason why the Astros won this game, but Jordan Alvarez, if he hits like he did today, the Astros offense is going to come up big this year. You have it right there. Not only was he four for four today, but exit velocities all over 103.5 miles per hour. And that was clutch. I mean, just like we weren’t there. I wasn’t there, but I could just hear him. It was that loud. And even when I was at the game, I believe it it was on u Labor Day at that single day he hit, it was so loud. So, if his bat speed is getting back to where it’s supposed to be, that that’s good news for the Houston Astros, bad news for everybody else. Yeah, definitely. In the last seven games, uh 21 at bats, five runs, 10 hits, one home run, five RBI, six walks, only two strikeouts, 476, 571, 667 slashline. Yeah. Four for five. Sorry, I forgot about that last. No. Yeah, I changed it. Um, I changed it when you said four for four. I was like, “Oops, I forgot to add the five.” That was on me. He was reading what I what I typed. So, sorry. I read everything. I am Ron Burgundy. If you type it, he will read it. No, I’m Ron Burgundy. Anyways, um, but yeah, seriously, um, Yordon looked great tonight. Yordon has looked great coming back. He has contributed. And you know what’s you know what’s you know what we forget about Yordon when he’s not in the lineup is that he is a complete hitter Eric. He’s not just a home run hitter. He’s not your guy that’s going to hit 240 and hit 30 home runs. He’s going to hit 30 home runs and hit 298 or 300. I mean the guy can just crush the ball. And so you love to see that. You need that because and we’ll talk about in the last um segment, we’ll talk about someone else possibly coming back that if you can imagine getting everybody back healthy, getting the getting the band back together, how many RBI’s can fly out of the ballpark if we just get everybody healthy. Yes. So Jeremy Pena, he did have a big game today. He’s also a good player. I don’t want to shade him at all. ever since he moved to lead off um slot, he’s been hitting very good, but he’s batting 306 with the 848 O ops on the season, but he had that big clutch home run. I know it was just a solo home run, but at the time it was a big moment for the Astros. Uh but he was two for four in this game. You had Craya with a hit. Sanchez Diaz Keratini made his um first start back playing first base. He had two hits and then um yeah Tal with um he got on with a walk and RBI bases loaded walk um to basically get another run later and he scored but um you had most of the people in offense contribute in this game and that’s what you need if you want to if you want to win consistently in the playoffs get to the playoffs in the first place you got to have consistent production throughout about the offense and I know Alt has had his good games but he had a 0 for4 game but overall he’s still batting 270 784 OPS on the season. Yeah, definitely. And um one of the things I don’t want to glaze over is Trel’s walk. Now he may have gotten some calls but still plate discipline. There was more plate discipline tonight and that’s what the Astros need, Eric. They need to quit swinging away at every early pitch. I mean, they were three for eight with runners in scoring position. I’ll take that. You know, they did only leave six on base. They had four walks. They put themselves in a position to win. And at one point, you’re like, “Ah, they got the bases loaded. You’re like, how are they going to score? Are they going to do it? You know, what’s going to happen?” And they took advantage of the of the Yankees miscues. you know, once the starter came out, the Astros did their work and went to work. And so, you love to look, walks are huge. And um it’s funny, David actually said earlier, I can’t believe we’re happy about, you know, winning off of a walk. Actually, we won with more than a walk, but if a walk wins you a game, I’m not giving it back. It doesn’t matter how you score the run as long as you score the run, right? Um, the sucky thing is it doesn’t count as a hit with runners in scoring position, but it counts as an RBI. Yeah, I know. But the Astros overall today were three for eight with runners in scoring position, right? They left six runners on base, but the three for eight is not too bad. Um, they had Okay, do that average. What do you mean not too bad? That’s great. I know. Three for eight. That’s not No, come on. You’re You’re underelling this, Eric. That’s I think that’s 375 if I’m doing it right. That’s 3. Yeah, I’ll take that. That’s better than like one for 12, right? Yeah, you are correct. Yeah. Former math teacher. Yes. Um, so overall, the Astros had a good day offensively. Now, can they carry this over to the next day? Remember last time they scored eight runs. The next day they barely came back and scored what? one run. So, what will the offense do? So, I think the difference between that game and this game is how they came back. They came back and scored all eight runs in the last four innings. And that shows something. That shows a little bit more grit than just scoring a couple like runs in the first uh five out of the first six innings, then getting another three runs and what what was it? The seventh inning that game. I think what the Astros did today was even more impressive. So, I think if anything’s gonna get this offense jump started, so to speak, I think it’s going to be this game. So, uh Brett, speaking of getting offense going, jump started. I think a certain hitter needs to come back. Unfortunately, I don’t I I haven’t seen anything. I don’t know if Jake Myers will be coming back anytime soon. I don’t know if you saw what happened. We’ll talk about that next. But Esau Parades, he made a step to a return to baseball action. We’ll be back in 2025. We’ll talk about that next. This episode is brought to you by Game Time. Hey guys, thank you for making Lockdown Astros podcast your first listen every day. Whether it’s on YouTube, go ahead, subscribe to us on Apple, Odyssey, Spotify, wherever you listen your podcast, go and check us out. Um, but uh we do need to talk about some serious stuff. Um, I know that there’s been a lot of talk about Isach Brady’s coming back. Yeah. At some point this season. Uh, he went and had a follow-up um imaging done and apparently it was good because the Astros brought him to Dyken Park. He was doing some running drills at men at in the outfield and he also took some ground balls at third base. But I want you to take this with a grain of salt. He is going to go down to Florida. He’s going to try to start getting it back in baseball shape or do get baseball ready. Is he gonna be ready for the postseason? He has about four weeks to make that happen. He can barely move according to Chandler Rome. So, he’s running, but don’t think that he’s running Jeremy Pena style. Oh, Chandler Rome. Oh, Chandler Rome said he can barely move. Yeah, if you go back, he said he’s barely moving around. So, he’s they’re he’s running but very gingerly. So, don’t expect him to come back in a week or so. No. No. No. I mean, yeah, he’ll be back for the playoffs, right? I mean, that’s that’s maybe maybe. Well, I mean, I’m a glass half full kind of guy, so I’m gonna I’m gonna look, what is this thing called? Manifesting. I’m going to manifest it. Okay. Um I’m in my manifestation era. Okay. Um but seriously, like we’re going to manifest that. We’re going to manifest Josh Hater coming back for the playoffs. But if if you could imagine getting back hater and getting back paredes and then coming back and and being hot like Alvarez is, I mean, I don’t know that a lot of people expected Alvarez to really contribute early on because of the hand thing, not knowing how he would react and he’s hitting, he’s crushing the baseball. You absolutely love to see it. But can you imagine Alvarez, Paredes, Sanchez, Pñena, Altuve? I mean, that lineup right there is a stacked lineup. Carlos Koreah, I mean, you’ve got And then Jake Myers, we got to talk about him because he left the game after fouling the ball off of one of his feet tonight um after looking really good at the plate. And you know what, Jake goes back to his old self. His helmet was flying off his head as he was hitting singles tonight. So, you gotta love that. Um do we have an update on Jake Myers? cuz the last thing I saw was something to monitor and that was like two hours ago. I haven’t seen it yet. Um according to Astros feature this what he said he went two for three with um a run, a double RBI and a rehab. Uh he pulled uh was pulled in fifth inning. Uh but he uh fouled a ball off his shin earlier in the game but he did stay in. uh he got a double after that and then he uh struck out in the second at bat that inning but was later pulled uh in the fifth inning. So maybe it tightened up on him later on after trying to play on it. So that’s not a good thing for the Houston Astros that when a guy is on a rehab assignment that he injures himself. So hopefully this is a minor thing because the talk was that possibly he can come back. Even Joe Spot said that he could be coming back soon. So, the idea was that he was likely coming back for the Rangers series and adding his bat to the lineup was going to help a lot because of what he’s done a lot this year. But um we’ll we’ll have to see. I haven’t seen any official updates um from there. But maybe it’s just a bruise. Maybe it’s just something that a precautionary. They’re like, “Let’s not risk it. We want him back in Houston. So, let’s just let him ice it and see how he feels tomorrow. Look, I mean, injuries are a name of the game. I mean, you know, like built for this. What are we built for? Injuries. What are we built for the That’s what we’re built for, right? Built for the, right? But, um, what I love about this team is their resilience, is their ability to overcome. And again, to preface the conversation for tomorrow night at 6 p.m. with Robert Flores, we have a special show. He’s going to talk about where the Astros are and how he’s kind of surprised that they are where they are because of what they had to go through. And so, um, look, this is a season of hurdles. This is a season of hurdles where the Astros at times have stumbled over those hurdles, but they’re still not only in the race, they’re leading in the race. Okay, they are leading in the race and that is an excellent sign. I love to see that. Well, I know that we’re like, okay, maybe we’re getting over this injury bug. Then we see the Jake Meyers news. Um, maybe it’s nothing major, but then we see that Spencer Arrigetti was going on the IIL with right elbow inflammation. So, earlier he went on the IIL and missed what uh four months basically with a broken thumb or whatever it was. Now he’s going to be out for however long. Maybe it’s nothing minor, major. I don’t know. If it’s if it’s elbow inflammation, I don’t know that Spencer I’m trying to be half I’m trying to be positive here, but it’s frustrating because he was just showing signs that he was going to rebound from the the bad couple first starts, but I think the Astros are built to withstand this because of um Javier and Luis Garcia. They have a deep rotation. Jason Alexander, um that guy that goes by Bummer Valdez, and then our ace Hunter Brown. So, um I think the Astros have a deep enough rotation to withstand Spencer Getty going on Iel and also Lance McCullers. He might be going back into the rotation if the Astros want to stick to a six-man rotation. So, you know, you know, Eric, and and and I want to I want to come back to this because we said we might we might um discuss this at the end of the show. Um and it’s not to beat a dead horse, but from everything I’ve heard about the situation with the Astros in the locker room afterwards, okay? There was there was a lot of there was a lot of shouting. There was a lot of conflict. Um, Chandler Rome even said on his podcast um, Cross City Territory that, you know, that that Salazar and Valdez were talking, you know, emphatically with each other. Of course, they were speaking Spanish and he didn’t know what they were saying. Um, and Flores actually addresses that same thing tomorrow night, but the thing is, Eric, sometimes, actually, a lot of times conflict is necessary. And conflict, we are told to like go away from it. Sometimes conflict is healthy. And when you have conflict with your teammates, when you have conflict in the clubhouse and it’s out in the open, you’re forced to work through it. That could be something that changes the tide of the way this team performs on the field overall, Eric. And it may have been something that was necessary. So, I hope that the Astros can turn that negative into a positive. If there’s any clubhouse that can do that, it’s this one for sure. Yeah. And the Astros just got to just play tomorrow like uh you’ve got your backs against the wall like they’ve been doing. And uh they can’t get shut out because unfortunately that’s been their history recently. When they score a lot of runs, they just uh they do this. And by the way, uh this is uh Alvarez. Uh he matched a single game careerhigh with four hits. He also um he he did it for a 10th time. He also um oh you already put this up there what his batting average was since he came back from the but uh it’s just impressive just what everything Oh Joe Spot says that Eric Getty reported the elbow pain after throwing a bullpin session today. So that’s when this hall came about. So I’m pretty sure they haven’t really done the imaging yet. So they’re just being uh precautionary here. So, it’s just a lot that’s gone into this Astro season and maybe you’re right. Maybe they were built to withstand all these injuries and they’re doing so without a deep farm system and it’s amazing that the Astros are where they are and it’s it shows the character. Does that mean if they lose tomorrow to the Yankees that we’re not going to be upset and pissed off again? Sure. That’s what we are as Astros fans. But at least for one game, we can say, yeah, the offense showed some grit. They showed some heart and they they showed something. And maybe it was what happened the day before. Maybe it brought the team together. Hey, we know that you’re supposedly the ace, but still, you can’t do this to one of our own. And so maybe this brought the team together and maybe they’re like, “Hey, let’s go out and uh win this.” Yeah. And and that’s the thing. Um from what I understand, everything’s calmed down. Everything’s good in the clubhouse now. And like I said, conflict a lot of times it’s avoided, but it’s really necessary. And and um I talked to a guy from a foreign country with a large oil company a few years ago that I had the honor of taking to his first baseball game. And he told me the difference between our country and his country was that in his country, everybody gets in a room and when they meet, they tell each other what they feel about each other. They’re honest. They’re open. And at the end of the meeting, they’re fine and it’s off their chest. And he said, “In America, when I go to a meeting, everybody says what they want to hear. Nobody says what they’re thinking and everybody leaves and they’re still pissed off at each other.” That’s kind of the American way. So, it’s good that the conflict happened and it’s good that everybody around’s taking notice. It’s calmed down. Control the clubhouse, Joe. This is your clubhouse. You’re the skipper. The Astros have a lot of hurdles, but I think the American League is wide open. And speaking of which, we didn’t talk about this. Uh Chaz McCormack, he was optioned down to Triple A, and uh he’s a veteran. He’s somebody that’s been around this game, made some big plays in World Series for the Houston Astros before. So, this was a uh big moment for him where he’s like, “Okay, um how am I going to take this news?” Joe Spata said he took it like a champ and he said, “Look, I’m going to go down there and get ready to come back up when y’all need me again.” And so, he knows the situation. He knows there’s other guys that um are probably playing better ball. And let’s say that Meyers does come up. He probably wasn’t going to stay up that much longer anyway. So, uh, Jake, what Chaz McCormack needs to do is go down, find a swing, get some more playing time, and if the Astros need him closer to the playoffs, then they can give him a call because we know what he’s done for them in the past. Yeah, man. You know what? And I want to tell y’all about something else. It is on Fire TV. It’s another big moment for Locked On. 1. It was great to see them come back against an arch-rival. It also seems clear Abreu does not respond well when placed in closing situations. Six runs in his last seven innings! That's not closer stuff.

  2. I sooo miss the days when the Astros were considered an offensive juggernaut. It was so fun to watch that. Before anyone says it, I am well aware that all things must come to an end 😢.
