IF they were trying to buck the current trend and go with say contact hitters that stole a lot of bases, or whatever, the HR issue might be OK. Well, the team is 28th in BA, 25th in OBP, last in SLG, last in OPS, last in runs, last in total bases.
How many home runs have visiting teams hit at PNC? How many home runs have the Pirates hit at PNC?
I think cherington may bs nutting into bringing him back for next year. Helping to sway nutting may be money left on cheringtons' contract.
Wishing all the best for Jarod.
Cherington talks about 2026 as if he is still going to be here.
Not one player on this roster will have hit more home runs this year than last year unless Cruz closes his eyes and actually makes contact a couple more times. All the grief about Andy Haines but no one mentions Matt Hague on how this team has regressed this year.
He probably will
Home runs? Heck, I'd settle for hits of any kind. They're 28th in batting average, 24th in doubles, and 16th in triples to go along with last in home runs. The only positive that I see is that they are somehow 11th in walks, which boggles my mind. Why would any pitcher risk walking a Pirate? They can't hit. Throw any pitch anywhere in the strike zone that isn't right down the middle and you can expect to get a positive result. It isn't just that Cherington can't tell a good hitter when he sees one; he has actively sought out guys who can't hit. M.A. Taylor is a good example. All of the catchers he's brought in from elsewhere over his tenure with the possible exception of Bart. Horwitz would okay as a platoon second baseman, but that isn't what they brought him here to do, and you don't trade starting pitching away to get platoon second basemen. Hitting is probably the easiest skill to judge in baseball. Either he traits it with disdain or he's incompetent. I'd say both.
I wrote off Jared Jones and never expect another inning from him. He should be replaced and forgotten. If he comes back and gives us anything then than would be a bonus.
