JJ McCarthy’s process in a Minnesota Vikings Week 1 win

Purple Daily is daily Vikings entertainment. I just want the Vikings to win a Super Bowl before we die. I will ride with this group. Seriously, man. Please. And away we go. Yeah. Purple daily. Literally daily. 365 days a year of Vikings takes. And we’d like to bring our friend Darren Doogie Wolson in from the five eyewitness news sports department on some of these episodes. a little information, some speculation about the Minnesota Vikings Doogie week one. A ton of things to talk about off last night and we will get to those things. Uh but first, a shout out to a new partner on board these uh these Doogie Purple Daily episodes, Awaken 180 weight loss Dukes. Absolutely, Phil. It’s that time of the year, basketball tryyout time. My 11-year-old has tryyous this upcoming weekend. So, inevitably, the last few weeks, we’ve been getting some work in. I’m trying to prep him. He’s dribbling circles around me. He’s embarrassing me. So, it’s hard, right? Especially for us guys. But had a long look in the mirror and I said, “Okay, I am way out of shape. I can’t move like I used to. I get it. Father time is undefeated, but I’m still young enough in my 40s. I should be able to move better. Well, I’m carrying excess weight. So, that’s where Awaken 180 has come into the picture. Thankfully, all sorts of incredible guidance. In 10 days, I’m already down 8 and 12 lbs. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to shed this double chin, but I feel skinnier in my face. I just I feel energized now. Hey, after last night it was hard to sleep and so I only got about four or five hours of sleep, but I still feel pretty darn good. The beauty of Awaken 180, they provide 80% of the products, but you have some flexibility at night. I love my fish. Well, great. It’s chicken. It’s hamburger patties. You have options. Just needed the guidance. Like, I have an idea, but they provide everything. had a great call with my guidance counselor Patrick yesterday. You don’t need to go to the gym. Hey, if you want to, great, but you don’t need to. There’s no calorie counting. There’s no medications. It’s just all about making the right choices, but needing that guidance in making those choices. So, I feel incredible, grateful, incredibly grateful for awaken 180, the website awaken180weightloss.com. awaken 180W weightightloss.com. I promise you it works. Let’s do it. Um, love it, Duke. So, just you’re you said you had a heart. We also couldn’t get to sleep till 2 in the morning just wired from watching that game. Can’t imagine playing in it. But, uh, your thoughts on JJ McCarthy’s first ever NFL performance. I thought it was fascinating to watch. I mean, through three quarters, the Vikings are 0 for8 on third down, 85 total yards. I was thinking as the Bears are driving, end of the third quarter, the drive that Blake Cashman hurt his hamstring on, the Vikings defense looked gassed, they looked out of energy, and all of a sudden, there’s a questionable holding call on the Bears right tackle. Not sure I would have thrown the flag there. Then the Bears just kept going backwards. It was still a makeable field goal for Kairo Santos. So to me it should have been 20-6 early fourth quarter. He misses the kick. The Vikings get the ball. Great field position. Their own 40 yardd line. Jordan Mason eight yardd run. Carrying tacklers. Jordan Mason 17 run. Josh Oliver brilliant block. Then that throw to Justin Jefferson. That third play of that drive I thought was a great throw, great route as well. It was a 17-yd gain. Yeah, the Vikings finally had to convert on a third down to get into the end zone. And yeah, we can certainly make a case the throw at the end of the first half to Jaylen Naylor to set up the Will Riker 59 yard field goal was meaningful, but it really flipped to me on that throw to Jefferson. third play of that drive where the score turned 17-12. Then the Bears get the ball back and Javon Hargrave who had seven total pressures for the night per pro football focus his sack right first play of that next Bears drive and it spiraled out of control from there. But I just saw JJ made a bunch of really good plays in the fourth quarter. I think about that touchdown throw to Jefferson. How about the block by Jordan Mason? How about the play call on the touchdown run? What a freaking brilliant play call. But I just I think about Phil. Yes, he played against the Raiders in the preseason a year ago. Yes, he played against Houston in the preseason this year. But I just I can’t put a whole lot of stock in those pre-season games. He had not played a meaningful a competitive a truly competitive football game for 18 months. It’s a process. It’s going to take time, but we always thought he had that it factor here at the highest level. Certainly had the IT factor high school, college. Now we know he has that it factor in the NFL. He is now 64 and3 as a starter since his sophomore year in high school. That’s not too bad. Not too bad. Have you seen the um the top offensive grades from PFF? Because this is also intriguing and very encouraging. Number one, right tackle Brian O’Neal, 83.2. Number two, center Ryan Kelly, 76.4. And number three, first round pick Donovan Jackson, the left guard, 74.3. Those are your top three guys. A and to combine that, Dukes, with your Hargra point. I think what you’re seeing too is the payoff, which is, and everybody said it, you got to get you can’t just say you’re tougher. You got to go get players that are tougher and better. and for twothirds of your interior offensive line to rate that high and for Hargrave to come through immediately and basically give you an interior push that you have not had for several years like some of these some of these signings including Eric Wilson who we can talk about are all starting to pay off or are going to pay off. Absolutely. I mean I even think about Jonathan Allen my guy yes should have had a sack. Yes, he wants that tackle back on Caleb Williams, but still credited with six pressures. Donovan Jackson, 31 snaps of pass plays, did not allow one pressure. We saw how good he was throughout August, but then to see it come to fruition last night. Donovan Jackson looks like he is going to be really, really good. And yeah, I mean, Eric Wilson under the radar free agent signing. Think about his backstory. What is this year nine or 10? Correct me if I’m wrong, Jud. Undrafted out of Cincinnati. The Vikings signed him as an undrafted free agent. Correct. He wasn’t a seventh round pick. Yeah. I mean, think about it. Just making it this long and having the impact he did both on defense and with the blocked punt on special teams. I mean, hey, Blake Cashman, it’s very possible doesn’t play against the Falcons. that there is no sense this is a long-term hamstring injury, but certainly a tricky enough injury where playing in five days may not happen. Well, you feel pretty darn good about Eric Wilson as the backup. We know last year when Cashman had to miss a game, how much they missed him. Gru Hill, all due respect, Eric Wilson is a million times better than Kimu Gru Hill. And so you feel okay if Cman doesn’t play against the Falcons that Eric Wilson can fill that spot. Yeah. Real quick back to your guy Jonathan Allen and and Jayvon Hargrave. So we we we did some math on this just pulling up PFF statistics from last year. So their core they had three and a half sort of core defensive tackles like the the down defensive linemen in the 34 scheme last year. Harrison Phillips, Jerry Tillery, Jonathan Bullard, and then like 200 snaps of Jaylen Redmond. So those four guys, those four guys all season, Doogie, combined for 41 pressures from the interior, which was like I think they had an 8% interior pass rush win rate, which was the lowest in the NFL. So 41 total pressures. Last night, as you note, Jonathan Allen had six, Jayvon Hargrave had seven. So, 13 pressures from those two guys alone last night. And by the way, I think uh Levi Drake Rodriguez had one where he got knifed right in there, Jaylen Redmonds. But just counting the two veterans you signed in free agency, they already accounted for 32% of the total pressures in one game that that position group did all regular season last year. That is money well spent in free agency. Incredible money spent, right? And we have heard for a while about the Bears revamping their offensive line, especially the interior of their offensive line. Well, yeah, those Vikings interior defensive linemen had all sorts of success. And hey, maybe you don’t need to blitz as much. Yeah, Flo, you know, dialed up the blitzes a little bit more as the game went on, but maybe they won’t blitz as much as we think they will this year because of those guys. Yeah, I think that also depends on the quarterback probably. Like with Caleb, I uh I like the idea of blitzing him because he freaks out. Now, now if you’re going against an experienced quarterback who’s not going to completely freak out because of of a blitz, which which is funny, which is what Detroit was with Ben Johnson and Jared Goff, but now it’s going to be different with Caleb. So, I think it’s situational, but there’s just no question that if you can get an consistent interior push, I mean, when is and the Vikings had this at one time, but when is the last time that the Vikings had an interior defensive line push where you’re like, “Okay, this is real.” Like, like this is a problem. And it’s funny because your opponents in the division have had that. You know, Kenny Clark at one point was that. Chicago had Aake Hicks, right? He was that. So, so you’ve sort of been subject to having your quarterbacks be under immediate pressure. By the way, they’re pushing Garrett Bradberry back and you you have not had an answer on the other side of the ball. Now, you do. And I think it’s going to make it’s going to make a tremendous amount of difference in my opinion in what Flores can do and when he picks and chooses. I would have blitzed a little bit more at the outset though just because if Caleb the more uncomfortable and you make Caleb think the worse he gets very quickly. Yes. And hey, you’re right. I mean it is situational like thinking about Michael Penn Jr. how much they involved Bejian Robinson in the pass game. I don’t know does it make sense to blitz a lot against the young quarterback on Sunday but knowing that Bejan might be his favorite target. I mean, who knows if Drake London can play with the shoulder injury. Darnell Mooney probably out as well. So, it seems like the Vikings are getting the Falcons at a pretty good time. How about some of the other newcomers? Think about a guy like Miles Price. Deservedly earned a game ball. How about some of those punt returns, right? He counts as a newcomer. And I’m telling you, I can’t sing the praises enough of Jordan Mason. I just I thought Jordan Mason was so good last night. Yeah. No, he was he was as advertised, man. Like he came in and and the rep on him was even though he doesn’t have a ton of sample size out there and he’s not been a bellcow who carries it 200 250 times. When he does carry it, he breaks tackles. He’s hard to take down and and he can gain yards in those sort of smaller, tighter quarters. Uh Dukes, on some injury front stuff here. So Christian Darasaw he’s ahead of schedule in a lot of ways but they decided maybe wisely. I don’t know if if the if the field conditions came into play but they decided no Christian Derasaw. So the Vikings are operating without one of the best players in the NFL left tackle Harrison Smith out but sounds like it’s not it’s not something that’s going to be taking too much time out of his uh his playing time. And then the Blake Cashman hamstring was a concern. But just on Darasaw, is that just like a week- toeek thing? I might I think he might play at home on the more reliable surface. Uh what do you think? Yeah, I would not be shocked at all. I mean, I know he was really, really close. There’s a reason why they didn’t put him on the pup list to start the year. Yes. At this point, as we sit here on Tuesday morning, I anticipate on Sunday night Christian Darasaw playing. Yes, I get it. I need to see him Wednesday at practice, Thursday at practice, get a little bit better feel, but I just know he was really close. Yeah. I mean, that field, I mean, hey, everybody had the videos out there of of all the divots. I mean, my god, what a train wreck. Now, thankfully, nothing catastrophic happened in game, but just looking at that field 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 yesterday afternoon, I sort of understand. I guess we didn’t find out for sure definitively postgame if that’s why they held Christian Darasaw out. But I guess I would understand if they looked at that surface and said, “Yeah, you know what? Let’s wait until week two.” I also can’t help but wonder after watching Justin school last night if you maybe just push Darasaw ahead ever so slightly. Like if he’s close, if he’s on the borderline playing, not playing against Atlanta. Well, after watching school stink last night, you play Darasaw against Atlanta on Harrison Smith was told again early this morning. He’s a pretty good spot. It’s just about having enough time to ramp up. Yes, he was at the Anthony Bar retirement news conference last Monday, posed for pictures, was in good spirits, was at practice over the weekend. He is really close. I would not be shocked if Harrison Smith plays on Sunday against Atlanta. Blake Cashman. Yeah, hamstring tricky injury, you know, MRI later today. But yeah, I would not be shocked if if that’s a minor setback. I’ve not been her told or heard that that’s some sort of significant hamstring injury. Also, Jeff Auda concussion on the last play, able to travel back with the team late last night, but we’ll definitely have to keep an eye on when he can clear the concussion protocol. He only played 16 snaps last night. I thought he might play a little bit more, but it was only 16. I’m curious too on that. So, because the concussion protocol is tricky, like it takes there’s no guarantee that it can be cleared quickly. It takes like what, three steps, Duke. So, uh if he can’t clear it, Dwight Mcloth’s the next right now on the 53, the next man up, but you’ve got no one behind him. So, you’re either going to have to promote uh Mororrow from the practice squad or go out and sign someone. And that’s where I’m curious still. I just I feel like the quarterback room is not set. Um and I and last night didn’t give me a lot of confidence that this is fine. So, that’s the one place I wouldn’t be surprised if there was still like a if they go get a a Gilmore. Did Shaq Griffin sign somewhere? I have not seen that. Let’s see here. That would intrigue me. He got picked up by Seattle’s practice squad. Let go by Seattle. Did he resign with their practice squad? I mean, you could pluck him off their practice. But you could do that. I think he’s I think he is with Seattle. Okay. But yeah, on the practice they they Yeah. And they elevated him for the game against San Francisco. So he But he is But you you could sign him off of their practice squad to your 53 if you wanted to. Yes. And hey, I get the lack of confidence, Jud. Yeah. I mean, I think Fabian Maro dressing for the Falcons game, that to me makes sense if Akuda can’t go. And I’m with you. I mean, it’s a process to clear the concussion protocol. So, we absolutely need to monitor Jeff Akuda’s situation all week long. I think the lack of confidence is Byron Murphy Jr. for his standards, yeah, had a horrible game last night. Not used to that, but Byron Murphy Jr. struggled mightily. Well, I’m willing to give him a pass. Like, to me, he earned the contract he signed in March. To me, he’s still a top-notch corner. Legit number one corner. But like the tackling, I mean, it wasn’t just him, but the tackling. But then you think about like you’re not practicing tackling. These guys didn’t play in the preeason. So, I just I guess I’m willing to give a lot of guys a pass on last night, but I think that’s where the lack of confidence comes from is that their number one corner struggled so much. Yeah, true. Yeah, it was. Man, looking at the some of the PFF grades last night, uh guys that were really, really poorly graded on defense. Ivan Pace Jr. was a 30 out of 100 in part because of coverage, which has been the knock on him. You know, the more he’s out there, the more he is susceptible to be put in a bad spot in coverage, but he was targeted six times, four catches for 31 yards, and uh I I don’t think he gave up one of the touchdowns, but Byron Murphy Jr. was credited with giving up. Was it that last touchdown where the Bears kind of ran a little they ran a little deception there and the receiver flashed across the back of the end zone? And then Jeff Auda had a bad coverage grade which has been his entire career only 16 snaps. So some of the Dallas Turner 29 snaps out of a possible 67. So he played about half the game had two pressures, two quarterback hurries and a stop tackle. So uh so not like a super flashy game for Dallas Turner, but but they ran when he’s out there. It’s three edge rushers because Grard and Van Ginkle do not come off the field unless there’s an injury of some kind. So they ran 29 basically half of the defensive plays for the Vikings, had three edge rushers on the field at the same time. So that is the way that they are looking to deploy Dallas Turner as as the third man. I’ll tell you what though, like if you had asked me out of 67 snaps, how many snaps does Dallas Turner get? If you had asked me at five o’clock on Monday, I would have gone over 29. I would have thought he had more snaps than Jaylen Redmond. Now, it’s not like Redmond had 15 more. It was just a couple more, but Redmond had more snaps than Dallas Turner. Jay Ward graded very, very well per pro football focus. And just from the eye test, I thought Jay Ward played really well. I think we’ll see Jay Ward play against the Falcons. He’s shown Smith the chance of him coming back. I still think Jay Ward is going to earn snaps. Ward uh from I think he was drafted in 2023. Uh from where he was, which was, you know, a special teams contributor, but I thought a year ago and certainly two years ago when he was not used much on defense, he was a definite liability. He’s come a long way. And I thought his training camp was good, too. So, yeah. And and on Turner, I’m seeing a bunch of Well, he didn’t play well, he didn’t. He’s in a three he’s in a threeman weave. And look at where guys are used. Like Van Ginkle and Grard are in the spots where they’re going to flash more. Turner is like off the ball at times. So, it’s hard to pass a judgment in in a Flores defense because there’s so much positionless football at times that I think as fans, we see guys flash or not. But if you go back and watch the film, I think it tells a lot more. So I don’t think that Dallas Turner had a bad game. Go back and watch the film. No. Well, because you see different things. No, he did not have a bad game. Like to me, Justin School had a bad game. Well, Byron Murphy Jr. had a bad game. There’s no way I would put Dallas Turner in the bad game category. No. Yeah, I have a Kevin Oonnell question I want to run by you guys here in just a moment, but uh Jud, a shout out to My Bookie. My Bookie making it fun to watch football this season. Absolutely. I I mean, week one was great, right? Just absolutely fantastic. Now, imagine being involved in that for week two with getting a sweat on. My Bookie makes it easy for you to get in on the action. Wearing about a half million dollars around his neck right there. Pepsi, the official beverage. Yeah, it might be more like 2 million. I don’t know. But, uh, Pepsi is the official beverage of the Minnesota Vikings. And they’re giving you a chance to win Victor’s Ride. So, you get uh these cups at US Bank Stadium and soon at the HY Fast and Fresh locations around the Twin Cities and a third location uh to be announced soon. Very exciting. And you can scan the QR code on the cup and have a chance to win Victor’s Polaris 1000 ATV. So, um go get your cups inside the stadium coming up this weekend and good luck winning Victor’s ride. And then a shout out too to the Minnesota lottery before we get to this Kevin Oonnell question, Jud. Exactly right. And look, with the new uh Vikings scratch game, this could be your year or your season or like it was for the Vikings last night, your day. Because each time you play, you have a chance at $100,000 plus great second chance prizes like cash or get this, Viking season tickets. Just say, “I’m in and play the new Viking scratch game today. Must be 18 or older to play.” But um I mean, heck, the Vikings are off to a great start. Go try your luck with the Vikings scratch game. So this morning I’m watching Get Up and it it’s kind of funny watching them all have this like realization about oh JJ McCarthy and then so they brought on um oh my god is it is it Devin McCordi or J it’s one of the McCordies that was on Good Morning Football and now is on ESPN. I think it’s Jason. I think it’s Jason McCordi. I think it might be Jason, but yeah, certainly one of the McCordi brothers. So, yeah, we’ll just go with McCordi. How about that? Yeah, McCordi was on Get Up this morning. I I’m disrespecting him, but but he said, “Hey, cuz he covers the Patriots for part of his like one of his side gigs and he covered Pat He must have done like TV broadcasts for Patriots preseason games.” So, he was at the joint practices or at least had gleaned information about the joint practices. and he told this the first time I have heard this story told on a national platform outside of like Purple Daily or the other local Vikings platforms that uh the Patriots went to work on McCarthy in day one of the training camp practice and the Vikings went back into the boardroom and said, “All right, let’s game plan a little bit for day two.” And McCordi explained to the audience, McCarthy came back and went 13 for13 in team drills during a portion and lit the Patriots up quickly learning from the failure the day before. And that’s kind of been his career throughout every level is like absorb the failure, learn quickly, and then move to the to the next level. And Kevin Oonnell has a big part to do with that. So Mike Greenberg turns the attention to Kevin Oonnell and his take was, and I’m paraphrasing, if you reddrafted every coach in the NFL right now, Mike Greenberg said, I would draft Kevin O’Connell with the number one overall pick. What do you think of that? Oh, he’s near the top, right? I mean, the legit coach of the year last year. I mean, we saw last night how much coaching matters. Yeah, maybe it was very simple. Well, hey Ty Chandler, take the ball out of the end zone. But Kevin Chandler signaling to him, get your butt out of the end zone. The Bears making the mistake not just kicking the ball out of bounds. Right. So, we can cite any number of examples, but coaching matters so much. Yeah. In the NFL. I’m not sure I have him number one. Like, I still think Shawn McVey is ahead of him. Like, how is Andy Reid not ahead of him? But to me, for sure, top five, maybe even top three or top four. I just can’t put him number one quite yet. That’s a heck of a exercise. That’s a real take. Yeah, I I think I would pass on Reed now just b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b based on age. I’m with you though on McVy. But um Okonnell certainly shows you and it’s funny be because Zim loved defense and he loved to coach defense. Okonnell’s ability to sort of work the room though like like all of the things he does that go beyond the actual coaching of football uh and his work with McCarthy. And look, this is where Ben Johnson faces a challenge. You are not the OC. You are the head coach. You are the CEO of the entire team. How do you handle that? You got to be patient when it’s right. You got to be not patient when it’s right. And so Okonnell would def I think Okonnell would be in my top three like like right now. I think he would definitely be in in my top three. I would like him to win a playoff game. Yeah. But um I’ve also seen enough that it is extremely impressive. Yeah. I mean, you know, and either Harbaugh is right up there, right? So yeah, one two three four five. I mean, we can debate incredibly subjective, but we I think can all agree that KOC is certainly near the top, if not at the very top, but even last night, like I guarantee there’s a number of play calls he’d love to have back. Like I think about that first two-point conversion play, right? Well, there was a penalty, so then the ball is moved to the one yard line. Justin Jefferson out of the game and why not hand the ball off to Jordan Mason trying to get pretty, you know, the pass to Josh Oliver. You know, Josh Owens makes the tackle. It wasn’t a hard tackle to make. It’s like I don’t know about that two-point play. There were some other headscratching moments early, some of the delay of games, the communication, what the heck was going on KOC with McCarthy, but yeah, I mean, undoubtedly Monday through Saturday, the influence that KC has on that locker room is top-notch. And I do think in game, for the most part, he is one of the best in the league. Yeah, Darren Doogie Wolfson everyone from the five Eyewitness News sports department after a dramatic Vikings victory. It’s a it’s a fun time to be following this football team right now, Dukes, and we look forward to uh doing it again with you on Thursday on Purple Daily. I agree. Had a couple agents text me this morning, hey, it sets up perfectly to be at least four and one, if not 5-0 into the buy. Lots of optimism among agents, at least via my cell phone this morning. Also, Jaylen Naylor, 17 more snaps than Adam Thielen. A reminder, there’s a reason why Jaylen Naylor underwent a procedure out in Beverly Hills to get back on the field last night. That catch at the end of the first half was huge. So, just a reminder, there was some thought, hey, wait a bit. And if he had waited and doesn’t undergo a procedure, he would not have played last night. Well, under goes the procedure, we saw why. It all worked out well. I thought Jaylen Naylor played well enough last night. Yeah. And then Theelen with the big two-point conversion catch, which doesn’t technically count as a catch. I don’t think I think those plays are like congratulations, you got two points for your team, but it doesn’t actually count as a catch, which is kind of weird. But, uh, yeah, good stuff, man. Darren Doogie Wolson from the five Eyewitness News sports team. Love it, Dudes. Appreciate it, boys. Look forward to Jordan Addison returning in week four. That’ll be fun. That’s right. It’s Oh, we’re only two only have to ride it out for two more weeks here. Uh for Dukes, for the sports dad, for Dex, I’m Phil and this is Purple Daily. See you guys.
