Edmonton Oilers News! | Klim Kostin PTO? | Projected PP Without Hyman

Hello Oilers fans, Austin here and in today’s video we’re going to be talking about well obviously the Emmonton Oilers but more specifically I want to discuss the Emmonton’s power play situation because Zack Heyman will likely not be on the opening night roster. So I’m very curious to see how they roll power play unit one without Zack Heyman. And of course I did want to discuss Clem Cen as a potential pro tryyout option for the team. He has expressed interest in coming back to Edmonton. He has talked very fondly about his time with the Edmonton Oilers. So, I did want to get everyone’s thoughts on that as well. So, if you enjoyed today’s video, make sure to hit that like button. And if you really like it, make sure to subscribe to the channel as we continue our daily upload schedule here. Yes, you will find daily content all season long for Oilers related content from yours truly. So, uh let’s just jump right into it. First things first, let’s talk about Clem Cen. He said he’d like to try his luck again at coming to Edmonton on a PTO and potentially cracking the team. Now, Clem C, of course, he was with the Oilers a couple years ago. He was picked up mid-season and he had a terrific second half and he had a good playoff run. Now, his advanced stats were not great. So, a lot of the analytics people, including myself, were very hard on clean’s puck possession play, but there was no denying that his ability to feed off crowd energy, his ability to go out and lay a big hit when they had to get one, his ability to go out there and maybe get a fight, his ability to go out there and spark the team physically, emotionally, mentally, whatever the case is, Clem Cen could do that. and he has a wicked shot. He could skate. He can keep up. And I think this would be a very interesting scenario for the Oilers if they decided to pursue him. Now, I know other Oilers insiders have talked about Clim. There has been nothing official as of yet about him coming to Edmonton on a PTO. Of course, Stan Bowman has absolutely no connection to this player at all. And neither does uh Chris Knobblock, right? Clean Cen, he played with Edmonton when it was Jay Woodcraftoft as head coach and Ken Holland as general manager. So, I think it would be unlikely for the Oilers to pick up Clim Cen on a pro try out, but uh we can’t rule it out, right? And I think it I mean, it wouldn’t hurt. I don’t think it would hurt to bring him in on a PTO. This is a player that has a lot to prove, wants to stay in the NHL, and just adds more competition to that bottom six, which I think is going to be a pretty effective bottom six if I’m going to be completely honest with you. So, let me know your thoughts on Clem Cen. I know uh some fans have wanted me to talk about him in the past, especially the last couple of weeks as we get closer to training camp. So, let me know your thoughts on that in the comment section below, but now we’re going to move on to the opening night projected lineup without Zack Heyman cuz I don’t think he will be ready based on, you know, his timeline to return from injury after the playoffs. And then I want to talk about specifically the Oilers power play situation. What will power play unit one look like? not only with the personnel but also with the coach behind the bench because yes, Glenn Gullson is no longer the power play coach. He is now the head coach of the Dallas Stars. And the Oilers brought in Paul McFarland who coached the Calgary Hitman last last season. So if we project the opening night lineup on the left, I have just a generic lineup. I basically just kind of punched this in quickly. Not really sure how the depth chart is going to work. We won’t know anything until training camp starts and we start to get a look at different players. But I do think at minimum you will see Newton Hopkins at least start the season with McDavid on that top line. I think they’re going to want to try and make sure that they have as much scoring depth as possible up and down the lineup. You’re already missing Zack Heyman on that top line. I think when Heyman is ready to come back, Nan Hopkins will then likely slide down to that third line center position. Of course, I have M Japani up on the top line with McDavid, although there’s a different couple different players that you could switch in and out in that situation. On the second line, I have Pod Coulson with Leon Dryidle and Matthew Seavoi. Now, Seavoy and Dry Cidle played a little bit together last season in the couple games that Seavoi was able to get when he came up from Bakersfield. Vasili Pod Coulson, I think he is a mainstay on that second line with Leyon. Unless something happens, something just absolutely crazy happens. Either Pud Coulson really stinks at that role or if Dry Cidle for some reason is just not feeling it. But I do think Pud Coulson and Dry Cidle, those two are going to be together for most of the season. Dry Cidle talks very fondly of Podzilla and uh or Pod Gozen as I like to call him. So expect those two to stay together throughout the majority of this season. On the third line, I have Ike Howard pencled in next to Trent Frederick and Casper Kappin. Like I mentioned because of the Zack Heyman injury situation. Normally Nan Hopkins likely slots in on that third line center role. Trent Frederick likely moves to left wing. You probably have Howard up the lineup potentially even with a McDavid or a drive title too. Casper Kain he’s just basically a placeholder because of the injury to Heyman. Fourth line you have Yanmar Henrik and Curtis Lazar and then I have Tomasc and Noah Philp on the outside looking in. When it comes to the defense pairs we have Ekcom with Bousard, Walman with Kulak, Nurse with Emerson and then you have Denine Ster and Alec Regula as the extras. Now Alec Regula is going to be an interesting player to watch in training camp. Sounds like he’s actually healthy and this is a defenseman that could potentially push a guy like Tai Emerson out for that third pairing uh right shot role. So, we’ll have to see how Alec Regula plays. I imagine he will likely be in Bakersfield to start the season, but hey, the more defensive depth the better. Alec Regula healthy could be an interesting player to watch. And then in goal you have Skinner, Pickard, and Johnson. Johnson of course was picked up from the I believe the Swedish elite league. I think it was in Sweden. I’m so sorry if it was Finland. Oh my goodness. I know the the Fins and Swedes there. It can it can get a little awkward sometimes with that. Uh but Johnson of course was picked up in the off season and look for him to potentially push Skinner and Pickard as well. Now this is where the changes to the power play start to unfold. So out is Glenn Gullson, in is Paul McFarland. Now, I don’t actually know Paul McFarland is going to be the power play specialist or power play coach because I do believe Mark Stewart is moving into the defensive role where he’ll work with the defenseman after Paul Coffee left the organization or left as a coach, I should say. He’s still with the organization. So, they brought Paul McFarland in. Now, if we take a look at the Oilers power play over the last three seasons in 2223, of course, they just shot the lights out against everyone 32.4%. In 232 24 they shot 26.3% or sorry they had a 26.3% conversion rate on the power play which was down 6% from 2223 and then last season their power play was a very respectable 23.7% but with how stacked this Oilers forward lineup is especially with the high-end talent with McDavid and Dry Cidle I think they’re going to want to bounce back from that power play I think the power play is going to want to be at minimum 25% I could see the Oilers trying to push it to 26 or 27% % as the season plays out. Of course, teams, they have adjusted. They know how to play the Orthers power play. They’re going to do a very good job at limiting chances. But this is potentially an interesting situation here where you could start to have different looks on the power play because right now the Oilers power play, it’s pretty dry, right? You they look for dry settle for the one-time. They try and get Zack Heyman for tips in front. There’s not a whole lot of boost bombs from the point anymore for some reason. And they don’t work the puck down low a lot. They don’t move the puck a lot in general. It’s usually just trying to, you know, find that one pass. Whether it’s Neutra McDavid walking around guys and trying to find that one one-time or if it’s Zack Hyman in front of the net just trying to whack in a rebound. I think this power play needs a little bit of a tweak to it. And then this is where I believe Vasili Pod Coulson comes in. Now, why would I want Pod Coulson as the net front presence over, you know, someone else? Well, Pod Coulson, he has foot speed, so when the puck goes in deep, he can go and retrieve it. He’s good along the boards, really good with his body. And number two, his strength. He is a very strong player on his feet, with his hands, and he has some silky mits, too. I think he’s pretty underrated with how he can stick, handle, and keep the puck in tight. I think Pod Coulson on the top power play unit being that netfront presence, and then you would have Nen Hopkins, McDavid, and Dry Cidle as your three forwards, that like 131 that they play on the power play with Buchard at the point. Or if you wanted to get an even different look and maybe insert some youth, inject that youth into the power play, maybe you can have Seavoy jump in there for Nan Hopkins and then have Nan Hopkins on the second unit. Now, of course, we won’t really know what these power play units are going to look like. This is just my own thoughts. I’m just spitballing. I’m putting the idea out there for you to all discuss in the comments section. Keep that conversation going in the comments section below. Let me know your thoughts on the Withers power play. Do you think Pud Coulson would be a good fit over Zack Heyman on that top unit? What do you think the Oilers season lineup is going to look like? 1. With all the Hoop-La surounding the Oil as of late – Myself think folks are selling Pics short ! Did he play like a Starter ( nope ) did he do his job ? Hell Ya !! Give the Guy a break !

  2. Kostin was a grinder. He played hard and fought every shift, even produced some points now and then and he loved the city. I'd love to have him back. Especially for the size and physicality with us losing kane (and hyman for some time) and bringing in two smaller youngsters.

  3. I do think the oilers need to find a replacement for nuge on pp1. He can still zing it, but he's getting older, and i think the oilers need a bit more speed and skill to match everyone else. Also just a different look cause i think teams have figured out the oilers pp and they need a change

  4. Too bad Frederickf doesn't play RW. He's big, rugged, fast, etc. and could sub in for Hyman short term (then maybe continue the role on PP2) but he's C or LW only apparently. Thanks AH. Great breakdown.

  5. unfortunately i am too broke to be a channel member but here is my joke:

"hahahahahahha pp problem? i heard viagra is good for that ahhahahahahahahah"

  6. Can we talk about nucks stating ellias Peterson is going to have a “revenge” season 🤪 ep40 will take revenge by sitting on evander kanes lap during interviews 😂 “cAnUckS aRe g0oD 🤪” lets all take a 15 min laugh at this situation 😂🤪🤪🤪👌

  7. I love Klim but does he REALLY have a shot at making our roster? If he does well as a PTO then why not, we need some players with grit. (He could be good on a line with Frederic or possibly Podkolzin.)
