On today’s episode of Lock 10 NHL, we will take a look at the Montreal Canadians who snuck in to the playoffs this past season. Can they take a big step forward after uh some big moves throughout the course of the off season? We’ll also take a look at the New Jersey Devils. Good enough to be a playoff team last year, but you know what what is the what is the path forward for New Jersey? We’ll also talk about the Calgary Flames, a team who rode their rookie goalie as far as they could last year. What about the scoring? My name is Seth Toal, host of Locked on Wild, joined by JD Young of Locked on Sharks. and JD. We start by taking a look at the Montreal Canadians who last year snuck into the playoffs as the second wild card just ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets and ended up with 91 points. So, they get in, but uh that is about as far as they get this past season. They made a bunch of moves in the off season. They made some nice moves to accentuate the roster. And so the big question that we are kind of looking at with this Montreal Canadians team, they got a nice core of players that they have been building around. They’re starting to add some accent pieces around those key players. Is this the year that the Canadians kind of put two steps together as opposed to one big step forward and maybe a step or two back? Yeah, I mean this team is uh it’s very exciting to look at kind of where this team is headed, right? Um you know, they this off seasonason they trade for Noah Dobson, who kind of was the bell of the ball when it came to defenseman. um you know, gave up two first round picks for him, but uh like you know, then they quickly signed him to a deal. And I think the thing with Dobson is he’s not gonna have to be the guy for the like he’s going to be an important piece, but with Blaine Hudson coming off the incredible season that he have and kind of cementing himself as as the guy for the Canadians, I think Dobson will probably slide in to, you know, kind of that second uh guy. you know, you you’ve got they went out and traded for Zack Bald Duke, which I think is going to be a really nice piece for them as well. You have Suzuki and Cawfield as you know, like you have all these young players who are really kind of starting to come in your own. And then you’re also adding Ivan Demadov who’s, you know, I think they’ve already started to like engrave his name into the Calder Trophy here before the season’s even started. uh like this team is set up to start to contend and you know did they sneak into the playoffs last year you know I I think you know between them and the Blue Jackets it was a you know a really fun race down the stretch there maybe they’re like a year oh slightly ahead of schedule but you know I don’t see why this team can’t start taking a step am I ready to put them up there with the Panthers and the Lightning and stuff like that no I’m not but I I think this team should be a team that you know maybe not ready for a deep playoff run But it should start to kind of put teams on notice like hey we are we’re going to be ready to start making some noise here you know sooner rather than later though. Um I I do like with with the goalending that I my my question though is with the goalending a little bit. Uh but I mean it’s crazy they they uh they have uh Fowler like like ready to go here like in the next year or two. like this team could be set up to have be like just dominant at every position here. So, uh yeah, I I think this team is kind of ready to to take a big step here. Is there now I don’t want this to like take out the obvious names like you’re obviously not going to take these two over Conor McDavid and Leon Dryidle. Um, is there a onew combo or or how many one-two combos are there in the league that are preferable to Nick Suzuki and Cole Caulfield? Honestly, that’s a pretty like that’s a pretty nice and this team still wants to like add like they want they’re trying to look for a 2C, you know, that’s why they they traded the carry price contract to the Sharks to try to open up some cap flexibility here. Um, so that way they can try to be aggressive and because they have the assets like this team’s pipeline is stocked. They have picks, they have anything that you want like Yeah. Uh, but Cole Cfield, you know, and like back to your original question, like Cfield and Suzuki, that’s a really nice combo to to work with. Uh, you know, like I wonder if I I would say Sens fans are probably screaming right now like uh Suchil Kachchuck, you know, that’s that’s a pretty good combo right there as well. But like, you know, it’s I think there’s a lot of teams who would very happily take trade their situation for Caulfield and and Suzuki. Uh, you know, like without being like the super obvious obvious ones here. But yeah, um I do think though for the like trying like trying to get some more scoring outside of their big guys, you know, outside the line aeskis trying to get some more depth scoring I think is going to be huge for this team. Uh, and if they can get that, if they can solve that 2C uh, question and and find a guy there because yeah, this team I think this team could be ready to to at least get to the second round this year. And it’s, you know, it’s interesting, too, because so much of what they do flows through Nick Suzuki and Cole Coughfield, who I think are super underrated players in their own right. like they they’re very good combo and they take care of most of what the Canadians do on offense which is where you know we saw Patrick L brought in to try to be like that third of the three musketeers and uh a lot of his production I know was on the power play but he’s still you know 20 goals is still 20 goals and if they just can get a couple of other guys to maybe elevate slightly into that realm, then that is kind of the mix of what you look for a team to make a run in the postseason. What What do we know about, you know, when you get to the playoffs is the opponent is going to neutralize your top guy? And if you have three or four guys that can step up to fill that void, then you’re going to be okay. If you don’t, then yeah, you’re gonna you’re gonna be in a world of hurt. What about Demov? like the I feel like the expectations for this kid, right? and you know who’s you know felt like he was should have been you know the second pick of the draft when he got drafted and like it it feels like that this guy who’s it almost feels like if he doesn’t score 40 goals this season as a 19-year-old feels like it’s going to be a disappointment for for just like how special of a player he is and is expected to be like but again you know he might be in a really great position to succeed because she does have like you know you you mentioned Cfield and you mentioned you know Patrick Lion and Sevkovski, he might be the fourth winger out of that group right now. So, there’s going to be less pressure for him to kind of have to be this star-studded player right away and whatever he adds might just be that like kind of cherry on top for this team because they have proven that they can be successful with this group and again you’re adding in a such a dynamic player with with Demadov. So, um, but yeah, I do like it does feel like the I mean, you know, small market Montreal Canadians that, you know, nothing to nothing to kind of cover over there. But it does feel like with Demadov, I mean, even even him just coming over last year, remember before the playoffs started, just the fanfare and like the coverage of that, like it it does feel like the expectations are through the roof with with not only with Dematov and with this team. Well, and you you see that anytime you have a player that you are hoping can fill uh a a major glaring spot like I I can say from experience, you know, the Minnesota Wild have been looking for somebody to fill the second line wing spot for like three, four years. And so anytime you have somebody that is going to step in to try to fill that spot, massive pressure on them to be able to succeed and even to just be able to say, “Yeah, we’ve got another guy that can that we can slot in on the second line.” Like that’s major pressure cuz you need that line to be able to complement what your top line is doing. So there’s a lot of pressure I think on Demidov to uh to come in and to provide kind of an immediate spark to that offense. Um but you know pressure is taken off of his shoulders if some of those guys in front of him uh live up to what is being expected of them as well. Um, I think if they can just they can just uptick the scoring a little bit. Um, I I think they very much can be a team that uh that makes a little bit of a run this year. Yeah. Where uh yeah, I was going to ask how far do you think I think I think second round feels about right. It’s kind of that natural progression, right? you lose in the first round to a Caps team who was you know clearly veteran more experienced than you but like uh you know I feel like again like that second round kind of feels about right for the Canadians this year if they get to the second round and you know they put up a good fight I don’t you know whoever they play against they get to you know six games or something like that that feels like a really successful season and then you can kind of talk next year is like okay can this be a darkhor contender and kind of move into that category so yeah it does feel like they are it feels like they are starting the the climb up the hill if we’re on the roller coaster. Like they they’re locked in. You can hear the uh the gears turning as you uh as you head up the uh up the hill if you’re if you’re riding on a particularly old roller coaster. Um they they make them a lot better now to where you can’t hear all that stuff happening. But it it does feel like they’re kind of on their way up. And if they can just continue to make some nice signings to complement um Nick Suzuki and Cole Cfield, it feels like that’s when they’re really gonna hit their stride. This this might be another team, too. Don’t be surprised if they look to make a big splash at the deadline. That 2C position again, I think they’re going to be really aggressive to try to find not only a short term, but a long-term answer there. like that. I think they want to put together their put together a band like a team and like this is our team for the next, you know, chunk of time. Yeah. Go get uh go get Tage Thompson when uh the Sabres are 15. You can play 2C, right? Cam Fowler. Uh you are doing a real disservice to Cam Fowler if you’re not playing him with a 1C and the goalie both in the same game. That’s fair. Uh when we come back, we’re going to talk about another young team that it seems like is maybe stalling out a little bit as they get to the top. What is going on with the New Jersey Devils? We’ll dive in as we continue today’s episode of Locked on NHL after this. Today’s episode of Locked on NHL is brought to you by FanDuel. Once again, we thank you for making Lockdown NHL your first listen each and every day. I had to go for the Dolphins, by the way. It just twists the knife. your Vikings, you know, you could have easily done the like maybe your team comes back, has a big comeback win like the Vikings do, and you bet the live. Nope. Nope. You had to twist the knife. That’s, you know, thought we were friends. Second half cover for the Vikings. That’s that would have been a good route to go. Yeah. Um anyway, the uh the New Jersey Devils, our next case study as we roll through all of the NHL teams before the start of training camp once again this year. This has become kind of a a timehonored tradition here in the Tuesday edition of Locked on NHL is to go through and uh get to those burning questions for all the teams that uh constitute the well the entirety of the NHL. The New Jersey Devils may be one of the most interesting. Now, they they made some big changes a couple years ago. Lindy Ruff out, Sheldon Keefe in, Jacob Marstrom in, and this past season, they did make the playoffs, but uh it didn’t really didn’t really amount to a whole hill of limped to the playoffs. They got annihilated in the postseason by the Carolina Hurricanes. They turned into fish food as they won one of the five games that they played and kind of leading to some whispers, some rumbles. What is uh what is going on with the Devils? Like are we to the point where they are maybe starting to take on a little water uh despite all the impressive things that they uh that they boast on their roster? Yeah. Uh I mean like to be fair to be fair like limped to the playoffs last year. Jack losing Jack Hughes is your best player. Uh you take the best player I mean you of all people know right you take the best player off your team. Uh usually your team’s not as good. Uh so but I do like this team kind you know a couple years ago they kind of went in right you know they like the team Omire trade they like kind of got all their like pieces and this team kind of does feel like a team that has stalled a little bit you know they went and they got Jacob Marstrom uh you know a couple years ago they they this offseason they resigned Jake Allen the four fiveyear deal for Jake Allen at 35 years old uh at 1.8 eight million or whatever like uh interesting decision but I think for Jake Allen right very much uh all my stuff’s here so I’m not g I don’t want to do anything uh fair but you know it does like they’ve been kind of trying to churn the the bottom of the roster to try to kind of bolster that and try to get some you know get some more scoring among the bottom six but you know like I I I think this team needs to be healthy and uh they also need to sign some guy named Luke Hughes who kind of needs a new contract as we get to the eve of training camp and he still has not been signed uh yet. Like you do wonder I mean you look just look last year guys who weren’t signed and you know I think it affected their seasons right you look at Swayman you’ll get sturkin like guys like that where the contract issues really kind of messed with them and all of a sudden they had they had poor seasons do you worry about something like that with Luke Hughes where yes he’s young and and stuff but like it feels like this is a player you should just lock up for as long as you possibly can uh and give him a good chunk money to do. So, I can’t wait to go to hike school. No, don’t you say that. Don’t you say that. Stay here where it’s safe. Um, one of the more fascinating things about this roster is the status of Andre Pal. Statistically one of the worst forwards in the entirety of the NHL. an absolute albatross of a contract. Like the Anaheim Ducks look at that $6 million and they’re like, “No, thank you.” The San Jose Sharks, they’re like, “We would rather we’d rather have Carrie Price’s contract.” Thank you very much. 100%. We’ll take Carrie Price’s contract. But but it’s stuff like that. like it is kind of an interesting mix of young and old and you know another player who just continues to be kind of linked to rumblings about his future and I feel like this is some of the stuff that kind of hangs over this franchise. You know, Dawson Mercer has been mentioned in trade rumblings it seems like for two years. Yep. And it it feels like just a culmination of that kind of stuff hangs like a a raincloud over this roster. And I I know that’s not the intent of the front office, but by just having that stuff kind of hang like there’s no resolution and guys just go through the entirety of the season not knowing if they’re part of the long-term plans and it kind of leads to some mental head games a little bit. Yeah. He’s not another guy in that kind of same Douggee Hamilton, right? And yes, he’s got trade protections and you know, stuff, but you heard whispers that like they might be open to moving him as well. And especially again when you have Luke Hughes in Simon and Sheamus’s case, you have these like young defenseman that you drafted either really high or that you’ve been developing, right? Like you’re and you’re going to be paying them. You’re going to want to give them all the opportunity in the world. And you know, you wonder if Hamilton, who guy who has been moved multiple times before, if he might be a guy on the way. But like back to the bigger question, like do you think this team has peaked or are you like, let’s get let’s let’s see what happens if this team can stay healthy for a full season of what they can do or do you feel like this, you know, like this major changes might be necessary with this team? because I’m in more of the like let’s let’s let things simmer a little bit especially with so many young defenseman in the back end and like you have a lot of talent there as well and you have again Jack Hughes I think uh most teams would really like to have a Jack Hughes on their team like and you have you know you know Nikico Hishir who’s one of the best two-way def uh centers in the league like I’m kind of in the like let’s see what happens when this team is fully healthy kind of fully going and and what they can do. So, I don’t know. What do you think? If I’m the GM of this Devil’s team, I kind I go trading everyone to the Wild. I mean, wouldn’t be a bad idea. I feel like I kind of go into the season and just have a bunch of dialogue like with other GMs as the season unfolds, feeling out process. Yeah. I I wouldn’t be like I wouldn’t be married to this roster by any means. Um I mean I I certainly think if healthy that it’s it’s good enough to compete, but it does feel like you may need to just kind of jolt it awake, so to speak, with a trade that maybe kind of brings in a couple of different pieces that offer a little bit different than what they are currently working with. Um, I don’t know cuz on paper the top of this roster is very envious. Like it’s it’s a it’s a top of the roster that a lot of teams would really like to have and they just they they just don’t have really any postseason success here lately that they can hang their hats on. So, you are kind of left scratching your head like, well, geez, what is uh what seems to be the issue with this uh with this Devils roster? Yeah. The more it maybe it’s just it’s such a topheavy roster and I think maybe you’re just not getting enough from your bottom six and that could be it. And because like you look at like successful teams, right? And that third line usually make I mean yes, you’re going to have your top stars doing cool stuff and that’s why you pay them a lot of money, but the teams that usually win, they have that advantage at like the on that third line where they feel like that third line would be a good second line on on other teams. And I think I like you look here and it’s just like, you know, there’s there’s some solid players in the in the bottom six, but yeah, nobody where you’re like, you know, like that guy is a guy who should be playing like top six minutes, but just because of the roster, he has to play third line minutes. So yeah, I wonder if if this team does look to maybe they move one of their young defenseman um that I just mentioned, you know, not Luke Hughes, but like one of the other two guys to try to find some more scoring for that middle six there. That would that would be my my guess. But yeah, I could see I could see this team being very active at the deadline. Uh because it does feel like the clock the clock’s not ticking yet, but I think you’re starting to wind it. You’re starting to kind of, you know, starting to kind of look at where where this roster is heading over the next couple seasons. That first alarm that you set like well before you have to actually wake up just to pull you out of deep sleep, like that alarm might have gone off. It’s not time for you to get up yet. like you could still go back to sleep and be fine, but it’s starting to get to that point. We’re starting to Yeah. got to wake up here. Yeah. No, it’s it’s this is going to be this is going to be another team that is very fascinating to watch. I think you hit it right on the head, too, when you talk about that bottom six because I feel like this with the Minnesota Wild. Sometimes the bottom six is a collection of players that you’re like, “Well, they can’t play top six minutes and we don’t really have a set fit for them, so we’re just going to throw them all in there throw them all in the toy bin and just hope that everything works out.” Yep. So, but at least they can score goals, which is uh more than we can say for our next team that we will discuss today. The Calgary Flames got a pretty darn good rookie goalie season from Dustin Wolf. The rest of the offense though, oh boy. Uh we’ll we’ll take a look at where the goals are going to come from as we finish today’s episode of Locked on NHL right after this final segment of today’s episode of Locked on NHL. Thanks as always for helping us out. Let’s talk about this Calgary Flames team, JD. Uh they found themselves just uh they got to about the five yard line, so to speak, uh for a playoff spot, but it didn’t end up working out for them. they end up uh on the outside and you know you you look at the the record overall 4127 and 14 or as I like to say 41 and 41 just with more points for the losses. But as far as the goals go, that was a much different story. Uh the Calgary Flames um fourth worst in the NHL as far as goals for at 225. Now you take out the shootout wins, 220 goals scored for the Calgary Flames this year. Uh they have got to find a way. They’ve got to find a way to uh to up the scoring a little bit. Now, Jonathan Hubedo did have a nice bounceback season this past year after a couple of just abysmal frankly seasons. Uh, and he had 62 points in 81 games, which was uh a little bit of a jump from what he had the past season. The goals were really the big jump for him. He went from 15 two years ago and 12 the previous season to 28 this past year. So more this past year than the last two seasons combined, which is always nice. Yep. But beyond him, where are the rest of the goals going to come from? That’s a great question. Uh because I mean like team that kind, you know, is pushing for a playoff spot. You know, they had some cap space going into this off season. So, you would think they would be, and again, I know free agency kind of sputtered out as everybody just decided to stay home. Um, you would think that they would just, you know, at least try to add somebody. You know, who how many players they signed in free agency that were not on the team last year? Probably not many. No, one. Just one. They re they signed uh goalie Ivan uh Prozatev uh who was just to kind of back up Dustin Wolf for you know kind of be that’s it. They resigned their own guys. Uh they brought in no other free agents and they’re running everybody back and saying I hope we can score more goals. So this is like of all the team this is my like regression candidate uh team like this is the team where I’m like I am worried about uh how this season’s going to go because Dustin Wolf was like Dustin like don’t get me wrong Dustin Wolf was amazing last year single-handedly drugged this team to relevance last year right um can he do it again on a team that is exact exactly the same. And you also have rumors that they might be trying to trade Rasp Anderson um you know going in you know this offseason and you might have guys like Zane Perk make the team and you know like some of these younger players start to kind of but like I don’t know man uh I also wonder like Audrey and Hubedo are really good like Coronado is a player I like but it’s it’s a lot of like you know players who are kind of okay like They’re they’re nice pieces on your team, but like I’m not like I don’t expect them to kind of drive the bus, and I’m I’m worried they just don’t have enough bus drivers on this team to kind of like drive some offense. So, yeah. I mean, one of the big surprises was Blake Coleman who had his goals cut in half. He dropped down to 15. So that’s that’s one spot where, you know, maybe you get a little bit of a bounce back, but Nazam Kadri had 35 this past year. Is he able to hit that mark again in his mid30s? Doesn’t seem as likely. I’m not saying it’s not possible, but as these players as players age, the ability to just consistently hit those marks starts to kind of dwindle. So you’re you’re banking on a lot considering the two seasons that Jonathan Hubedo just finished. Are you going to be able to count on him for a 25 plus goal, 60 plus point season? Probably not. Yeah, it’s good. I I wonder if they’re looking at their trade deadline and ask uh guys that they you know between Farabe and Frost and guys like okay we’re you’re here for the full season you know like you this is like going to be your time. I wonder if those are the two guys that they’re kind of pointing to as like once you get here once you here for training camp like you guys have to be 20 20 goal type of player 20 plus gold type of players for us. So I I’m yeah they’re banking on a lot of internal growth I I guess would be mine but as you and I both know like growth isn’t always you know go in a straight line like you have your ups and downs and yes I know those guys have played hockey have been professionals for a while but I don’t know man I’m I’m this team I think is a team that we could be looking at as a potential like bottom 10 uh if not worse Because one, if Dustin Wolf gets hurt, like there’s nobody behind him. Uh like Devin Coley is a great story, etc. Um but if yeah, Dustin Wolf gets hurt for any long and I just I do not know where the scoring is going to come from. I think this is going to be a bottom 10 offense again. And I worry that uh you’re putting a lot a lot on your very young goalie. Well, and you’re going to I mean, you’re going to need you’re going to need guys to really kind of exceed what they’ve done previously. Like, you need a jump from Matt Coronado. You need a return to form from Igor Sharingovic and Blake Coleman. Uh you need to, you know, this is where the supporting cast needs to really rise up and uh and help out Jonathan Hubedo and Nazam Kadri. And you know, when have we when have we seen we we really haven’t seen that as a possibility since uh since Daryl Sutter was coaching the team like that that team scored a ton of goals. He’s not here anymore and the goals have been a problem since he was relieved of his duties. That’s not something that just fixes itself overnight. Yeah. And I mean with Johnny Gdro leaving in free agency like too that’s a lot of goals leaving as well. Yeah. Um yeah I think it’s going to be a long season in Calgary. I I don’t know. I just I I as fun as last year was for them. I just think I think they come back to the pack a bit this year. So it certainly does. You can’t win every game two to one. Yeah. You can’t win every game two to one. So No, you cannot. Uh it’s it’s just very stressful. So, yep, that uh that is our episode here for today. So, which of these teams do you think is most likely to hit the postseason this year? Will it be the Montreal Canad? Will it be the New Jersey Devils? Will it be the Calgary Flames? Habs fan here – this season can go either way. Very competitive division, could be a step back, could be a massive step forward. Very hard to tell. For the conference there are a few very unpredictable teams like Boston, Rangers, Islanders.
What happens with the Leafs after Marner? Is Buffalo getting their đź’© together? When is Tampa hitting Father Time?
Tough to predict.
Habs fan here, we going to meet Sharks at stanley cup final between 4 to 10 next years for couple runs i think
