Drake Maye: “You Got to Bring it Every Week.” | Patriots Press Conference

What’s going on, Dart? How you doing? How are you? Good. How was practice? Yeah, it’s good. Good to get back out there. Um, we get on a new week, uh, new opponent and just, uh, yeah, I think anybody’s got, you know, everybody’s got some energy for, you know, division rival and, uh, you know, division opponent. So, uh, you looking forward to get back out there and all this guys brought today and, you know, we got some stuff to clean up and and, uh, look at, but, I thought it was good energy out there today. What for you were the biggest areas improvement leading into this week? Yeah, I think uh yeah, just I think just just taking the next step. Um I think you know part of us moving on and part of us learning from from stuff throughout the game. I think uh you know get off on a better start um you know first three and out we had you know good field position um on that first you know possession. So you find a way to um you know start faster. I think that’s kind of a theme for the team. Um start faster. Um I think um from there just throws I like to have back. I think I feel like I said that every game, but uh particularly um you know ones where I feel like I had guys open and from there just uh yeah I think um down in the red zone I think um you’ll be better down in the red zone whether it’s decision making on my part or um accuracy or just um in general I think we got to score touchdowns when we’re down in the red zone. What’s your comfort level in this offense right now? Yeah, I think we’re building. I think um you know I felt good, you know, kind of reciting the plays and getting out of the huddle and and getting um in and out of checks, you know, out there during the game. Um, so it felt good to get that in in a games rep. And I think it’ll, you know, continue to get better between uh, you know, me and coach. And I think, you know, the more we do and the more we’re kind of seeing the same things and, you know, stuff we can revert back to in in a game setting will always um, kind of help us going forward. And I think those guys um, you know, they were catching the football and blocking up front, I thought they uh, you know, play their butts off and I think u, you know, they deserve a lot of credit and I got to do my part. Drake, do you do you think the fixes are something that can happen relatively quickly or is this something that’s going to evolve over the season? Fixes and meaning what needs to h happen for the offense to be better. Yeah, I think uh it’s something we’re working working hard to um you know fix this week. you know, we’re going to get back and um it was one game that you know, we want we wish, you know, we would have had and feel like we could have had uh you know, but at the same time, I think we got pieces. We got guys that um you know, play hard and and did a lot of good things, you know, on Sunday. So, build off that and and uh try to learn from that and and establish the run and build off that. But, um yeah, I think that the goal is to everybody after week one’s trying to, you know, kind of assess where they’re at and uh get back there in week two. And I think it’s, you know, my job to um kind of get us going and and like I said, try to start fast and from there just uh, you know, take what they give me and create positive plays. I think that’s what we’re trying to create just positive plays and from there I feel like um if we don’t get our own way, I think we’ll we’ll be we’ll be fine. Drake, you mentioned you know there’s some throws you’d like to have back. Was there anything having watched them again on film? Is there anything that was sort of consistent on those throws? Is it a mechanical thing? Is it a recognition thing that was there a consistent theme on on Yeah, I think just um someone’s rushing them. I think you know I see him and um you kind of rush it to try to get out to as quick as he can. The one of pop he was getting close to the sideline with kind of a trap corner there. So try to get it out as quick as I can to him to get the first um you know but from there I think you know really I feel like I’ve been throwing it pretty good and um you know seen it well. So, I think, you know, sometimes there’s there’s throws um that, uh, like I said, you just, you know, man, um, that could have helped us. And, um, you thought I made some some pretty good throws throughout the game, you know, that I felt good about accuracy wise. So, uh, yeah, I’m not going to, you know, overh harp on on too much. Um, and but at the same time, you got to, you know, hit guys when they’re open. So, it’s a it’s an even kind of balance. But, uh, yeah, I think I definitely, um, you know, accuracy is one of the, you know, biggest things a quarterback. So, you know, being accurate is what I take pride in and you can’t miss open guys. D Stefon Dinks told us it’s important to him to give you positive feedback and reinforcement as a captain and the the trench guy now like how do you feel you’re experiencing the pressure and expectation that that comes with that? Yeah, I think the guys are being great around me. I think um you know they’re pumping me up and and staying positive and the huddle’s got some juice. So that’s that’s the biggest thing. Um I think that kind of being in the huddle and having some juice and um kind of not having all eyes on on each other, you know, waiting for somebody to say something. I feel like they got some juice in the huddle and that’s what I’m trying to bring to practice. You know, bring some juice and positive energy and um you know, let you know, not um let that game kind of bleed into this game um we just had. So, uh just try to, you know, kind of come out here and like I said, uh do what I can to get the guys going, you know, early and um we’re playing in a different kind of climate. So, um, adjusted to that and it’s getting cold a little bit around here, but, uh, those guys do a great job pumping me up and I got to realize that, you know, I’m still young, but at the same time, I still got to, you know, be a voice and and, uh, help those guys around me cuz, you know, my voice, you know, it means something. Coach Frabel said that they would evaluate putting too much on your plate, uh, early in the season. Have you noticed any changes with this so far this week? No, I mean, I think uh, you know, any team you’re trying to, you know, establish to run. So, um, you know, from that point, I think you win you win games running the football and stopping the run. So, trying to set that up. Um, you know, I feel like I feel like the guys we got guys that we can throw to in space and make plays and, uh, you know, we can hurt teams in the past. So, um, I don’t think, you know, I don’t feel like anything’s changed and I’m just trying to do, you know, my part and whatever they ask me to do. Anything on like too much on your plate? No, I mean I think um, like I said, uh, you know, previously, anytime you’re playing quarterback in the NFL, it’s um, it’s a lot on your plate. you know, you’re playing quarterback for, you know, one of 32 teams. You know, that’s a it’s a lot and um you know, something I take uh I don’t take for granted. You know, what a special position it is in this league and um there’s a lot of good that comes with it. There’s a lot of stuff that’s on your plate and that’s just part of it. So, try to do whatever I can to, you know, study as much as I can and um you know, hear the play calls and and study the formations before he calls them. And um yeah, like I said, there’s a lot of things that go into it being accurate and play calling and getting in and out of plays. So, uh just trying to um like I said, get a get a good grip on it. And I think the more more u we do that, you know, kind of throughout the weeks and as the season go on, the better I’ll feel for in this offense. More plate talk. Um we keep talking about the plate. So you are never going to say, you know what, that’s too much my plate. I can’t do it. You’re always going to as a player and competitor, I would imagine, say, I can do it. I can get it. Are there points in which you might might say, you know what, it’s probably not a bad idea to streamline that. It’s a funny spot that you’re in where you don’t want to say it’s too much, but you have to be realistic about I’m not there on that yet. Yeah. Um you I think that’s what you spend so much time for. It’s what you’re hearing in April for and um kind of throughout the building blocks of the offense and I think um you know more of that is you know hey I may not like this play this week or hey I may not like um you know you know something out of this look. Um, so it’s more of that me and I’m kind of sharing my opinions, you know, with coach rather than, um, shooting out, taking taking the challenge on. So, um, I’m just trying to coach is trying to put it, you know, the best plays in the huddle that we feel good about and that are our best plays and then from there, um, just got try to go and execute. Ask about sliding. How natural does that come to you and is that something you actually practice? Yeah. Um, you know, I played baseball growing up so sliding was um, you know, pretty natural. I slid head first more um, in second base more than I can remember. But, uh, yeah, I think just being able to get down. I think I slid a couple times, um, in the games and I think I do a better job instead of run sideways, try to get as much as I can inside. So, uh, get as much as I can, but, you know, really from there in a third down and down in the goal line, try to try to be big and, um, you know, not take too much of a hit, but, you know, get what I can. How do you feel you’re at with your mechanics in your footwork right now? You feel like you’re in a good place with all that? Yeah, I feel like I’ve been I feel like I’ve been um you know, you know, I think throughout training camp and and throughout over the summer um you know, trying to you get a grip on the offense, get a grip on kind of the timing and and the routes and um how it times up with my feet. Um I think, you know, I was I was accurate and and made some throws when um you know, my feet timed up with the routes and with the concepts. So, just got to, you know, stay on my on my stuff kind of throughout the week of not letting little things like that, you know, go to waste cuz I feel like when um, you know, I got a good base and um, turn my shoulder at it and and let it rip, um, I’ve been on target, so that’s just the main thing. And I feel good throwing it, so that’s what matters. Is it the same as what you were doing last year in terms of like, you know, left foot forward and all that good stuff or Yeah. Um, you know, same setup. I think um like I said different um you know a little different you know offensively with um under center and um really kind of kind of the same stuff but yeah just trying to apply it to this offense. Um I can’t even remember some of the different stuff from last year but uh yeah trying to keep the same stuff and try to rep it and just continue repping it and um the throws that I feel like you should have had back try to get those after practice and um you know throughout practice try to work on throws and making throws from from pockets. I think it’s tough to emulate and practice, you know, a defensive line and kind of, you know, pushing the offensive line back into you and not getting able to step into it. So, some of those throws are are tough to emulate and I that’s what I try to do in in my uh individual time um after practice. Guys, talk about last question flushing it, you know, when they move on throughout the week. Uh has that been easy for you this week? Um yeah, I think um kind of throughout the uh course of last season, you you learn it’s it’s any given week in this league. Um, shoot. I think it’s it’s one of those things that you got to bring in every week and and can’t let you know last week kind of dwell on this week. And I think that’s what, you know, these guys and and what coaches is talking about and and then preaching and u you know, wanting to start fast. So, um, for this for me, I think, yeah, flushing it, but also, um, you know, not just learn from it. I think, you know, learning from it, learn as much as I can and, uh, try to get on the wing side of things and that’s what, you know, I’m here to do. So, thank you guys.

  3. Be yourself Maye and work meticulously on the details and mechanics that’s what the elite QBs do. I believe in you bro use last week as fuel

  4. He needs a run from this team that leads to a playoff berth, once he gets a taste like Brady did, he will get better and want it. He needs to show more competitive spirit like Brady did when he started to taste blood out there.
