Indirectly Chiefs related, but I haven't seen us talk about this yet. The Broncos ownership group announced plans for a new, fully privately-funded downtown stadium with a retractable roof this week:

It's notable to us for a few reasons:

  1. It will be completed before any new stadium the Chiefs announce (and after the current TSC lease is set to expire) despite being announced well after the first Arrowhead renovation plan last year

  2. Walmart money and all, but again- the stadium itself will be privately funded

  3. The city has committed to investing $140m in infrastructure improvements to support it

  4. How much money Clark Hunt and the ownership group actually has access to to pay for a new stadium is up for debate: While the Hunt family itself has an estimated $25b (Lamar was one of 15), Clark and his three siblings in the ownership group are estimated to be worth around $1.6b each.

  5. The team's valuation is currently at $4.85b. How much would they put into a new retractable roof stadium at The Legends, TSC, or another Arrowhead renovation?

The last meaningful thing we heard from the team was in July when the Kansas STAR bonds were extended another year while the team talks to both Kansas and Missouri. The team has said there are "more discussions" ongoing, but nothing more.

It's clear that the team doesn't want to be tied to The Royals anymore, but both of them need to make a decision and get something in front of taxpayers and fans from either state well in advance of three months to avoid a disaster like the last vote in 2024.

  1. I don’t believe anything needs to be decided by and voted on by fans at this point. Funding is now coming from state legislatures, not local counties, and is already approved in both states.

If anything I think this and the new stadium in Buffalo just helps Hunt point out how outdated Arrowhead is compared with other team stadiums in the league. Would prefer one of the greatest stadiums in the NFL wasn’t abandoned, but I think that’s where we’re headed.

  2. As a 40 year long KC Chiefs fan living in Donkey country, they talked about this nonstop yesterday morning on the local news. It’s sad to know that they will be getting a privately funded stadium before the Chiefs.

  3. I’m a donkeys hater but I’ll back them 100% for what they’re doing. Fuck subsidizing billionaires with welfare

  4. Both the Chiefs and Royals are waiting out the recall vote on Frank White. (Mayor Q said as much on Steve Kraske’s show the other day.) Assuming he is recalled, they’d then have a different face across the table in their negotiations.

  5. The Broncos have the richest owners in the league by a wide margin.

The Chiefs have the second richest owners in the league. The Hunts could fund a new stadium easily if they wanted.

  6. Honestly, as long as Arrowhead lasts until Mahomes retires, I can just stop giving a shit as Clark moves them to Kansas for a publicly funded Dome with no personality that’s got a ton more suites and prices out 95% of fans from going to games, even as the team drops back to irrelevancy.
