DK’s Daily Shot of Pirates: Eighty-two
[Music] [Applause] How perfect this was, huh? How fitting. All schis pitching, offense doing absolutely nothing. Another long losing streak and clenched within that another losing season. Good morning to you. Good Thursday morning. I’m Dan Kvachovich of DK Pittsburgh Sports. This is Daily Shot of Pirates. It comes your way bright and early every weekday. If you’re into football and or hockey, I also offer daily shots of Steelers and Penguins. The same place that you found this Orioles two Pirates one in 10 innings. Kyle Nicholas was a mess in the 10th. Loaded the bases. Dylan Beavers shot a single past Spencer Horwitz and that was that. Not that it mattered. Skins was outstanding through five innings. No runs, two hits, no walks, eight strikeouts. His erra is at 1.92. He’s winning the Sai Young. Isaac Matson allowed the Orioles their tying run in the eighth. Not that the pitching mattered. Going to try something a little bit different here this morning instead of all the usual. Fire Ben Cherington. Fire Cherington yesterday. Fire him last month. fire him last September. I’m instead going to look at this box score and you owe it to yourself as a follower of this franchise who’s insane enough to have pressed play this particular program today. And really, I I don’t have a kinder assessment of your mental state in this context. I’m going to read the box score. I’m going to read the visitor’s side of the box score to you and you’ve got to just sit there and hear it out because this is what Cherington sent out onto the field in year six of his tenure. After a ton of trades, after a ton of draft picks, you know, even some free agents along the way, this is what was sent out onto the field. Jared Triolo is at leadoff with a 218 average, 0 for four with two strikeouts. Horwitz, as mentioned, had the home run. That was his only hit in four at bats. He’s hitting .257. The home run was only his eighth. And so he remains the known wrist issue low power platoon hitting first baseman that Cherington thought was going to be some sort of big deal. this past winter. Brian Reynolds remarkably batting 244 went 0 for four with a K. Tommy Fam who’s had a wonderful second half but who also was Cherington’s number one free agent acquisition at 258 went 0 for three with a walk. O’Neal Cruz, who has enough raw natural power to have wowed Major League Baseball at the home run derby in the same summer, is now hitting, sit down for this, 200. He’s at the Mendoza line after an 0 for four with a K. Nick York, the player acquired for Quinn Priest in a trade. the former first round picker who has since gone on to have a tremendous season for the Brewers. He’s been up for less than a month from Indianapolis. He had the offense’s other hit in four at bats. He’s now off to a riveting 176 start in this stint. Cam Deanni, who is the 28-year-old infielder Cherington acquired in the Adam Frasier trade this summer, is now 3 for 26, the 115 average after going 0 for four in this game with three strikeouts. Jiuan Bay, who’s in line to get as many hollow chances at the majors as Jack Sowinsky, went 0 for two with a couple walks, but also in a critical spot, failed to put down a routine bunt. This from a player who’s been in the Pirates system forever and whose game has always been predicated on speed, can’t get a bunt down to save his life. And bringing up the rear, but certainly not in terms of Tarington’s list of epic failures, was Henry Davis who went 0 for three with two Ks. Henry is now at 161 for the season. It does feel like it’s worth reminding that Henry was the number one overall pick in the draft and that in exactly 10 days he’s going to turn 26 years old. I don’t know exactly at which age a prospect becomes a suspect, but my guess is that if Henry hadn’t been a one- one, we wouldn’t be watching him right now. So, please, on this solemn occasion, this solemn annual occasion, one that we as Pittsburgers have now commemorated in all but four seasons since the last division title in 1992. Take everything positive that you might have to say about Cherington and pitching or even skins. If you even want to throw skins into that and fantasize that he was some challenging choice. Take all of that, crumple it up and ram it hard into the nearest trash can, exactly where that lineup from last night belongs. When we come back, J1Q. [Music] The usual J1Q, I’m going to read you three comments that were left on our DK Pittsburgh Sports app after the game last night. Matt Graver said, “I could accept another losing season if this was the 2010 through 12 roster with a a young Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez, Jordy Mercer, Gared Cole, Starling Marte on the way.” But there isn’t a single position player in Pittsburgh or even in Indianapolis where you can point and say All-Star. You can make the argument, this is still mad, that their three best hitters are Tommy Fam, Brian Reynolds, and Cut. All on the other side of 30. Two of them free agents and closer to 40 years old. They are not two bats away. Chris in West Virginia wrote, “Batters five through nine in the lineup in this game were batting 200 or less. That’s how you lose 82 games. Thanks, Ben. Jim gets today’s last word by saying, “But listen, DK, if they win just 12 of their last 16 games, they’ll have a better record than last year and the year before last.” And if you don’t get that, or if it’s too early for you in the day, you haven’t had your caffeine yet. If the Pirates win, okay, now you’re catching up with me. If the Pirates win 12 of the last 16 games, they’ll have 76 wins, which is what they had last year and what they had the year before. Moving Cherington this year for some nutty reason to remark that the Pirates did more winning in 2024 than they did in 2023. You guys are the best. I cannot believe you’re here like this every day. But I’m kind of glad you are because I’d be driving myself loco otherwise. This way I can help drive you loco. Appreciate you guys. I appreciate everybody who listens to Daily Shot of Pirates. We’re going to do another one of these tomorrow. [Music]
Same story every summer, counting up to 82.

Fire Cherington, Sell the team Bob!
😶
Pirates have pitched a lot of shutouts. It would be more but they've given up runs in the 8th and 9th innings several times over the last couple of weeks.
I know they like Nicholas but I just don't see it.
.161 LoL. And they booed Austin Hedges out of town. Jeebus.
Thanks Paul, hang in there please!! Pirates fan for 71 years.!
Why the hell is Bae doing on the roster yet let alone being in Pittsburgh? Why in the hell wasn't Bae pinch-hitted for in the 9th? Batting with Bae was giving the game away, losing on purpose. What a shitty lineup with a bunch of horrible hitters in a row. Pathetic.
Old Noah from the Post Gazzet thinks Cherington has won his job for next year.
Hang in there DK. I'm here everyday for my daily shot of torture. There's solace in shared masochism
My greatest concern for this team is that after all of this. Year 6 and 6 losing seasons of the Ben Cherington regime. Is going to be back next season and will be another wasted season. I have been a fan all of my 51 years and Bob Nutting and Ben Cherington have made it increasingly hard and frustrating.
Having Paul Skenes gave and gives me hope but as long as this GM is running the team that hope is stifled.
We're all masochists here, DK. There's no other excuse for us to be here.
Mario Mendoza was a career .215 hitter. So the Pirates fielded 6 guys at or below this. Come to think of it, Cherington would love Mario. Good field, no hit, versatile infielder. Cherington is salivating; he wants him.
Sobering, but we have to hear the truth.
Baltimore vs Pittsburgh! An old rivalry as both franchises were the best of the leagues in the 1970s. Here we are now! Yes DK, you hit the nail right on the head! I bet Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Bruce Kison and Ed Ott among others – manager Chuck Tanner too- from the ‘79 WS winning team- are turning over in their graves to know and see how pathetic this years version of Black and Gold are performing at the plate?! “Time to sell off, trade the entire lot of used cars and bring on all new models!”
You are so right about how this game showed exactly how this season has been for the Pirates. You would think that at this level they would be able to contact the ball. I have never liked watching a hitter just stand there with no attempt for a third call strike. At least throw the bat at the ball or jump in front of it you stand a better chance at getting on base. Excuses don’t produce wins! And that statement goes all the way in the organization. Let’s get results!
The best thing Paul skenes can do is talk over with his agent discuss their plans going forward and what Bob nutting needs to do to improve this team. And if he refuses to do it in the off-season then he should not report to spring training. And then obviously asked to be traded
Morning DK. THE ONLY REASON I continue to listen to this is to see how bad it can get and look forward to when you report Cherrington is gone! Then it will be scary to see who Nutting gets to replace him.
Will our torment ever end!!!!
These days, how many teens in the area get together and routinely say, "Let's go watch a game today?" I may be wrong here, but probably not very many. What would be their motivation other than Skenes pitching or who the opponent is? 🥱
Bae is still here!!? Yet he still doesn't know how to hit the ball on the ground to the left side of the infield to take advantage of his speed.
We’re such a close fan base because we’re trauma bonding 😂
And there is no hope for 2026 as Ben will say their looking for internal improvement for the 7th season. Skenes needs to go into Nuttings office and say things gotta change or he wants out of here.
Right on DK. Bucs have now lost 5 in a row. In those 5 games, they’ve scored 8 total runs. This streak is a microcosm of the entire season. Another reason why Mr Cherington must go.
It’s whatever at this point. Just get the season over with. You have nothing to look forward to next year, or the year after that, mostly because Skenes is going to Garret Cole his way out of Pittsburgh. He’s not going to waste his best years in a ball club who has ZERO offensive support.
The sad thing about the 2026 team is Ben Cherington will be back, and the starting LF will be Tommy Pham again.
Thank you as always
It's time to start calling Oneil Cruz a platoon player, same as Horwitz. Fair is fair, DK.
Sounds as though Skenes will pay close attention to what happens in the off-season. Won't be surprised if it has a profound effect on his plans for the future.
I'm only here the day after Skenes pitches. When he leaves, so do I.
I was at this game. Skenes was amazing to see up close. At one point, I glanced at the scoreboard and couldn't believe the averages of the AA lineup we trotted out there.
What’s the answer?
Thank you DK. I agree DK and J1Q was spot on. Great how DK
Pathetic lineup–most need to go !!! Get rid a pham , suwinski , davis & need a REAL 1st baseman
Cruz is another Gregory Polanco. A player full of promise and potential who just can't get over the hump and figure it out.
Mendoza gets a bad rap. His lifetime avg. was .215. Cruz can only dream…
