Baseball night in America takes us to Cleveland, Ohio with just a couple of weeks left in the regular season and a key September match up the final meeting of the year between a couple of American League central rivals who are in the thick of the wild card chase. It is the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Guardians and gavin Williams on the hill facing Kansas City for the third time this year. And in his young career, Williams in seven career starts against Kansas City is two and one with a career, er, a of 227. The payoff pitch, fastball misses and a board to start the night he’s on at first with nobody out that brings up Bobby W and lift it to right, working towards the corner back to first goes Astres. And that’s a big out for Williams to get retiring. That brings up Pasquin, who tonight is the Royals designated hitter. Now the sixth Royals first baseman ever to have a 100 plus RB I season. Yastrzemski goes, Pasquin cranks it towards the gap right center field and deep it is gone. The first two both quality starts. Can he do it again? Stephen lead it off. Stephen is tough to strike out. The first two guardians chopped up to the first base line. Salvador Perez, the first baseman tonight fields in the back hand on hand tossed to kick. So far tonight, Nolan Jones, there is a called strike three on a fastball again. Three strikeouts from Poli have frozen at Cleveland with a fastball down. Jones can’t believe it but a perfect pitch hard hit ball to right off the bat of sean but a good bead on it for Cag Leone. Six up six down for kick. So 7-Up 7 down for number 32 in Powder Blue. And now it’s Bo Naylor, we mentioned Naylor was one of those guardians. He got a hit against kick when he saw him last year. That one time in relief puts a charge in a one out towards right field at the wall. Jack. Oh, Steven appreciates the help. He went right back to the 9 ft wall and made a leaping grab to Rob. That’s as good a play as Kang Leon is made in the major leagues that will bring up CJ K and the next one is a bouncer to first baseman Salvador Perz. He’ll flip to the pitcher covering for the out. So ground out long fly out and another ground out and another 123 innings for as we go to the fourth inning with the Royals leading 2 to 0. So one gone for Jack Cagle, there goes the sweeper and curveball combo that has provided all three strikeouts two via the curve one via the sweeper for Williams. Jonathan India will step in. He struck out his first time up waves at that sweeper again. Breaking stuff looks nasty. Now that Williams has found it. He’s retired 11 of the last 12. Stephen kick has been perfect through three, second time through the lineup. Let’s see if it’s different this time around as Stephen Kwan steps in gets the first Guardians baserunner of the night nine up and nine down until this double in the corner for Stephen much quicker to baseball. Now, now, George Valera and grounded to the second baseman India, he’s up with it throws to first for the out but a productive out Aswan advances to third with less than two down and now it will be jose Ramirez on the ground. Ramirez punches it to Perez that will score. And the guard down here in this fourth inning looked like a pretty good break for Quan from third. So Perez did the wise move and took the out at first base and the Guardians are on the board on the ground out off the bat of ramirez, his 77th run batted in and it’s now a 2 to 1 ball game , two up, two down. And here comes Bo Naylor down the line that goes towards the corner could be extra bases for and indeed it is a two out double potential go ahead run in scoring position. Now for the Guardians in the bottom of the fifth inning, the number nine hitter CJ Kafi steps to the plate on the ground to short with the diving stop if he doesn’t get it, a run scores in this game is tied. Instead the gold glover and one of the best defensive players in any position in baseball ends the frame. Now, Jack Cag Leone, the batter runner at first two down. Sixth inning. Another curveball. This one’s off the first base bag, a fair ball Garcia on his way to third. It’s grabbed by Kafa coming in base hit off the bat of Cag Leone. And the Royals have at the corners with two down. If that ball doesn’t hit the base, it is screaming down the line into the corner and there’s a pretty good chance that Michael Garcia scores and jonathan India will be the hitter. He has struck out both times. He’s been up there tonight. He has struck out looking, got him swinging on another good slider. Williams finishes it with his sixth strikeout. Another dandy tonight gave up a two run homer in the first and nothing after that two down. Nobody on kick with a chance to get through seven. Holding on to this 2 to 1 lead if he can get Schneeman here who is lined to right and grounded to second base ball four way outside. First walk issued by kick comes with two down in the seventh and here comes manager Matt Quire. He’s going to go to John Schreiber, what a gallant effort he got out of stephen kick. He won’t go seven in back to back games but a very good two start stretch with Kansas City for Stephen kicks making a 67th appearance. A 347. Er A he has stranded 75% of the runners he’s inherited. 52 runners inherited 13 have scored and his job now to take care of Brian Roch. The switch hitting infielder shortstop tying run at first two outs in the seventh and a payoff pitch to on the ground to first and Salvador Perez vacuums it up to finish the inning excellent job by Kiff Schreiber leaves a man stranded and off to the eighth. We go still a one run ball game bottom of the eighth inning in Cleveland and john Schreiber who got the final out in the bottom of the seventh, stays on for the bottom of the eighth. Be Naylor, the catcher to the plate swung on, smashed into right field of a between 1st and 2nd Bone Naylor who is a better hitter against the Royals than the other 28 teams is two for three tonight and he carries the potential tying run at first base. The CJ Kafa third round pick just two years ago, outfield not very deep. Now we’re going to get to see Kate Smith. Cade smith 12 for 17 in the save department. Six wins, five losses. 19 holds, er, a 320 fastball up and in, and India hits the deck and he was hit by that pitch and so he’s headed down to first. That is the second time this season that India has been hit by a pitch up and in against Cleveland and the tying run just like that is a board and he’s going to come out and the speedster Tyler Tolbert will check it as the pitch runner and tying run. Nobody out in the ninth. Kane Smith facing kyle Isbell. It’s bunted foul. It’s a strikeout. He’s got 13 sacrifices to lead major league baseball, a skill and art that is dying. Isbel can do it but with two strikes, he risks it and fouls off the heater and it’s a strikeout one away. They miss strike three and a fastball two down. The Royals are down to their last out two down in the night 3 to 2. Cleveland top of the order and mike Yastrzemski pitch head high in the air medium deep. Right. Jones is under it ball game and the Guardians take three of four against the Royals with these two teams both battling in the wild card chase a crucial Guardians win.
