Dan Orlovsky on Jalen Hurts’ Performance In the Eagles Season Opening Win

What are your thoughts on the Thursday night opener of the Eagles victory over the Cowboys? We’ll just go macro on you here, Dan. From the Philadelphia Eagles perspective, one quarterback looked fantastic. I thought Jaylen played about as perfect as you could play. Literally, statistically, he rivals it. 23 pass attempts, 19 completions. So, that’s four misses. Three of them are drops and one’s a throwaway. Uh, so you you watch them carry the football team. What about the passing game that you saw last night from Philadelphia moving forward? That might be something because that was a major concern that caused AJ Brown to start reading books on the sideline last year. And I’m wondering if that might be an issue for this team this year. Right now, I I that’s not something for me. I I I think that what I’ve evolved in my kind of the way I I think about and look at Jaylen in their passing game is I just think he’s one of those rare guys, Rich, that just does whatever is needed on that play to make sure that that play is operated the right way and that whatever is needed to win that football game. And so a lot of times with quarterbacking, you have your play and then you get to the line of scrimmage and the defense has theirs and the defense in some ways dictates to you what you’re going to do with the ball and you can’t just force the ball to certain areas. And if you watch Dallas, they just played with really soft coverage. They played with that umbrella or half circle shell. You’re not going to throw the ball over our heads. We’re going to play a ton of zone. And that’s why you saw Dallas Gddard get seven catches. And so that’s why you saw Jaylen run the football nine times because they just kept everything in front of them. And we’re not gonna allow the go ball to go over their heads outside of that one Jan Dodson throw. So, I’m not going to overreact to it right

  1. Eagles O-line won the game for them. Jalen (and Saquon) had all day to do whatever he wanted under no pressure. On the other hand Dak was under pressure just about every play and still found his targets.

  2. some people choose to knock jalen for what he doesnt do (rack up big passing numbers), im gonna choose to consider him for what he does do (limit turnovers, play efficient, play well situationally, be effective with his legs, win games)

  3. This is what the Eagles offense does. They beat you whatever way you choose. Defenses have to make tradeoffs. Philly adjusts and moves on.

  4. I don't know how you can watch Josh Allen play and then hurts and praise hurts as playing perfect. A perfect performance for hurts is just one that ends up highlighting how he can't perform above and beyond as a passer

  5. It didn’t cause AJ to start reading books 🙄 I thought we were past that made up narrative? He ALWAYS has the book. It’s to keep himself in the right state of mind. I don’t know why it was ever blown into the big issue it was or why we are talking about it like we DONT want him to do it. Eagles fans DO want him to read it. If it’s what keeps him in top mental shape read away!
