🔴LIVE 🔴Tampa Bay Rays VS Chicago Cubs/September 12/ Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

show has inner league action for you this afternoon. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs. First pitch coming your way next. Just about ready to go. And on the mound today, a guy who will give them innings. Jameson Tion at Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Bunting for a hit. He pops it up, reaching for it, makes the catch. All right, let’s take a look at the Rays lineup. Not a team that usually sees a lot of pitches or works a ton of walks, Chris. They take a more aggressive approach than some of the other teams in the league. They definitely have a few free swingers in this lineup. Hitters who want to be on the attack, and that’s great as long as you got pitches in the zone, but if the pitcher is able to expand the zone, can be very difficult for an offense like this to get going. You’ve got to somehow draw some walks, put some runners on base so that when you do have those free swingers come up, you can cash in with some runs that are plated. One out, base is empty. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even check swing. No appeal. Two balls, one strike. Hard hit to third. Castro sends it to first. Lao out on the play. Batting third. Third base. Junior Camro. Two down. Base is empty. Now up for Tampa Bay. Junior Camro. He’s an intimidating presence in the batters box. I mean, even when he’s swinging and missing, I still don’t know how confident pitchers are that, hey, when he walks to the plate, this guy’s an out. I know there have been some tough times, but I think each pitcher knows that, yeah, I could be the guy where he gets everything right and he hits it 500 ft. No doubt. That one clips the outside corner and that’s strike two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. And the righty deals. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. [Music] His second homer of this series. And they jump out front. It’s one- nothing. Sing. That’s his 50th career homer. 50 might not sound like a huge number, but it’s a nice little milestone that a lot of guys don’t get to. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Josh Low. Just missed. Eddie chases that one below the zone. One and one. That’s in there. One and two. [Applause] comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt and it’s in time for the third out. So that’ll end the inning. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. You’re dialed into the show. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound now, Ian Seymour. Singy. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. Nico her leading things off and takes a strike. swing and a chopper out to short. Oh, the throw is over his head. No advance though. Ball didn’t get too far away. Left fieldielder in though. As an offense, you want to get the crowd involved right away. Get that good energy working for you. But this time, the defense does it for him. Always a great opportunity when you can get your leadoff guy on base to start the game. And it doesn’t matter how it happens. Ian Hap up to hit. They had a swing and a miss there. [Music] Keep standing alive. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And it’s now first and second to start the inning. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. First and second, no outs. Suzuki will hit next. That one misses and it’s one and0. [Music] Keep it going. And a swing and a miss. That one missed. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Music] That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Grounder tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. Batting fourth catcher. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. This group was shut out their last game. So, we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. you’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored and you want to get off to a great start score early because if you don’t you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of Carson Kelly up to bat next lays off for a baller at third over at first with one away [Applause] and that one is lifted in the air he’s under It drops into the glove. Runner tags for home. He’ll score on the sack fly. It’s 1-1. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. And now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana. Santana. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. That ball tied up here in the early going. Little bit low. Two in one. Step off. Throw to first. Half dives back in safely. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. [Applause] Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Batting six. Dansby Swanson is going to get a chance to hit. Swanson. Swang and a miss. It’s 0 and one. [Music] Yeah, that’s fouled off. In the air, right side and that’s a base hit. half on his way home. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. They take the lead. It’s 2-1. Big RBI for him right there. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Justin Turner now. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Fouled off left side. Highf fly ball down the left field line. La pulls that one down and that is that. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Second inning coming up here at Wrigley. It’s the Cubs two. The Rays won on the north side of Chicago. John Shami and Chris Singleton. Top of the second and stepping in for the Rays. Jake Mangum. Tyion back to work. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning. Get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Late on that fast ball. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder way inside. [Music] Strike him out. Swing and a miss. Curve ball in the dirt. Beats him for the first out and that completes the strike out. Oh, that was perfect execution of that curve ball down and in. He gets it out of the danger zone and you really can’t do it much better than that. It’s in the zone the entire way, so you have to swing as a hitter, but then just falls off the table and almost hits you in the back foot. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Bobby Seymour. This one in the air. Turner moving under it. And there’s two down. Well, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited. Came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. Tristan Gray in the box now. No balls in a strike. Next offering is fouled back. And now one and two. Two out. Base is empty. Next offering down low and in the dirt. goes down looking. Nothing across here this half. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Cubs two. The Rays won here at Wrigley Field. This is Willie Castro. Basement Willie Castro. That misses. One and0. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff with the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be because it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly, though. Swing and a miss. There’s that change up. One ball, two strike. That misses. Two balls, two strikes. The count center field settles under this one. He makes the grab and there’s one down. Batting ninth center Pete Crow Armstrong the next cup to hit. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. And first offering is fouled off. Next offering is fouled back. One down. Base is empty. Swings through it. And that’s a strike out. Now batting. So the lineup flips over. Nico her the next to hit. He’s over for one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away. And you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just missed. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Three and 0. Strike one. Three balls. No strikes. That’s in there. And the count is filled up. Good plate appearance there. able to take the walk. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. H in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Go back to Tampa. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that one moves his feet. Struck him out without a swing. That was pretty nasty. Cubs leave one as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. Back here at Wrigley Field, top half of the third inning now up for Tampa Bay. Carson Williams [Music] and a foul ball. Williams getting the start at shortstop in the eighth spot in today’s lineup. a former first round pick in 2021. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. And now the catcher for the Rays, Hunter Feducha. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s going back. Back some more. That one is gone. That’ll fire up the dugout. It’s 2-2. Chris, we knew this moment was coming for him soon. Yep. And it finally came. We knew it was only a matter of time before he’s going to connect with one just like that. He’s just too good of a hitter at the plate. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. Growl ball right side. Horner slings to first in time. Now batting leftielder Brandon Laauo. And now it’s Brandon Laauo grounded out his first time up and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That’s a ball. One and one. Swings and misses and a count one and two. Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. Suzuki under this one. He’s got it. And that is out number three. And the Rays get one on a solo shot. And we’re deadlocked now at two a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning. So up now for Chicago Sea Suzuki. Well, here’s a fun fact for you, Boo. Suzuki is the first Japanese-born player to homer in three consecutive plate appearances in the majors. Feel free to use that note in your next Cubs broadcast, buddy. A change up missing. And that’s ball one. And another ball. Just missed. [Applause] There’s the strike and the count is three and one. [Music] Now a screamer into the outfield and foul ball. [Applause] fouled off again and it remains three and two. He’s bagging. Give me that pitch one more time. A hanging change up just out in front. There’s a swing and a drive. And this one looks like trouble. And that’s going to roll to the wall. Safe at second with a leadoff double. showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now the batter is Carson Kelly and the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. That’s down and in. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four, two aboard. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. The designated hitter. First and second, no outs. And next for the Cubs, Carlos Santana, one for one with a single so far. Swing and a miss as he was late. He’s looking for a strikeout or a ball on the ground for a double play to sort of calm this situation down. swings through that one for strike two. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Garrick Clevenger warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Kelly the right-hander also getting loose. Here’s the O2 and just misses with that one. Suzuki the lead runner at second. Kelly on at first with nobody out. That missed by a lot. Now two and two and there’s a ball. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire [Applause] in the air right field. Mangum sizes this one up, brings it in. Grounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Now batting the short stop, Dansby. And here comes Dansby Swanson. RBI single his last time up. Keep an eye on this at bat because even though it’s early, it could change the outcome of this game. Look for your pitch and attack it. first offering and it just misses. In this situation, the batter’s got to know what the pitcher is trying to do to him and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground, get two for one. You got to look for something up in the zone. At worst case scenario, you deliver the sacrifice fly. High-fly ball out to center field. Williams snags it for the second out. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me all.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Ian Seymour gives way. He’s responsible for the runners on base. New pitcher coming on back in a minute. The left-hander on now, Garrett Cleger. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Now it’s Justin Turner. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That one missing inside. Ruers on first and third. Two away here in the last half of the third. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. One. [Applause] This to third. They take the force out. Inning over. No runs, a hit. Two left. On to inning number four. We are tied 2-2. as we go to the top of the fourth. Now the third baseman, Junior Camo and that is out of play. Well, these Rays as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to and a swing and a miss. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Josh Low digs in now. Swings through that one. 0 and one. Bases empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. That one ripped right center field and it’s into the bleachers out of here and the Rays take the lead. It’s 3-2. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. And they’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Next to hit Jake Mangum. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Not a lot of people know this, but this isn’t the only Wrigley field in MLB history. You know, when the league expanded and added the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, they played their first season at a stadium in LA called Wrigley Field, which had been the home of the minor league team of the same name. Up next for Tampa Bay, first base. So, digging in, Bobby Seymour. 0 for one so far. And that’s him for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. They fired in quickly. So it’s first and second with only one away. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s the second baseman, Tristan Gray. Struck out looking his first time in there at the knees. Going one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Two on, one out. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Squirts away a little bit. Nice job behind the plate there. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Shota Imanaga, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. Keller getting cranked up as well. Swang and a ball driven out to center. That’s back. It bangs off the wall. Mangum headed for the plate. The run scores. Here comes a second to the plate and he’s out. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. And the batter will be the shortstop. Carson Williams struck out swinging his first time and that one fouled off. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field way back there. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. He hammers one out to center. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 6-2. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Hunter Feducha next to hit for the Rays. He’s already homerred here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, a really rough inning out there on the mound. And uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy’s toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward. ground ball to the right side. He steps on the bag and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 62. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. So up now for Chicago, Willie Castro. Check swing called strike. 01. Swing and a foul. Out of play. swinging a ground ball and he handles it himself for the out. Well, a wellthrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward break on that one. Pete Crow Armstrong. Pete Crow Armstrong, the next Cub to hit. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics. But the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Throws across the diamond. Already two gone here in the home fourth. Back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. Here’s Nicoer. Hot shot to third. Zips it to first. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Nothing happening there for the Cubs. They still trail it here. It’s six-2. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Taylor Rogers. He’s been so good against lefties. Here’s the Rays lead off hitter for two in this one. Bay center fielder Chandler Simpson that one fouled off. Well, these Rays digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher hand really well. [Music] on the ground to the left finds his way through base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Now batting leftielder Brandon Laauo Laauo at the plate late on that fast ball. No balls, one strike. Inside corner for a strike and it’s 0 and two. Ruer at first with no outs here. No, that’s out. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One away here in the fifth. And now Junior Camro. He’s already homered in this game. the kick and the pitch. Runner goes, there’s a ball and that’s a stolen base. Not even close. Well, I’m sure that steal will raise a couple of eyebrows because of this big lead. But I think it’s more respect for their opponent knowing that they’ve got to continue to add on if they’re going to win this game. Don’t take it as an offense. Take it as a sign of respect. That one’s in there and the count one and one. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. Man at second. Swang at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field and it gets by him. The run comes in from second. It’s seven to two. They’re still chasing it as he rounds second. Picks himself up an RBI. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. One down, runner at third. Josh Low next to hit for the Rays. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Camo stands at third with one gone in the inning. [Applause] Here we go. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. did a nice job right there. Two outs. Line to left. Base hit. Runner in from third to extend their lead. It’s an RBI single. It’s 82. I feel like I’ve seen more balls and this is speaking as a a former outfielder, former center fielder, but more balls in this game. Just out of the reach. Sometimes the angle’s not great. Other times you just got to give credit because the hitters hit the ball really hard and jumped off the bat. But one thing we do know, these warmer temperatures are very, very favorable for the hitters. Seymour in the box again takes a strike. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. going to count one and two. Two runs across in the inning and we’re in the top of the fifth. And the next pitch is way outside. [Music] And the sweeper misses. 3-2, two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. So now two on and two outs. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Gray in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Two on, two outs. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Two on, two outs. Fought off. Foul. Two and one now. That one down the line. And that’s just fouled. And down on strikes he goes. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. So, two runs, three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Rays eight and the Cubs two. Back here at the friendly confines, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Now the left fielder, Ian Hapby Clevenger back to work. Clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. H lays off. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit slightly up. slightly in, gets a piece and stays alive. Please win. The two on the way. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Base hit. That was smoked through the infield. Had a good start to the inning. Up next for the Cubs, rightielder Seya Suzuki getting ready to hit. [Applause] Here we go. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. Yeah, that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds the mark. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. on the ground right side four can’t glove it cleanly still able to fire over and they get the out good recovery wasn’t easy following the misplay catcher Carson Kelly and next will be the cleanup hitter Carson Kelly [Music] lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. Out number two. So, a man aboard, Carlos Santana, the next cup to hit. One for two. Santana. Blind drive. And that should be extra bases. Coming home. He will score. Everything came together for him. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Dansby Swanson stands in that misses the zone. Ball one. runner at second. Two down. [Applause] And that’s downstairs now. Two and0. Oh, great grab on the dive from his knees. The throw. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Oh, that one right there had the looks of one of those plays of the week. Great diving stop, but he just couldn’t set up to make a good throw. Maybe got a little too excited. He was probably feeling it as well, but either way, that’s a tough play and a tough air. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Garrick Clevenger is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching. New pitcher on now Ryan Pepio and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. So two outs with runners on the corners. Turner climbs in on that right side and first offering is fouled off right through there for a strike. Now just to submit mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. That misses the zone. Now one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. Santana on third. Swanson at first. Two out of the inning. swings and misses. Struck him out. Cubs pick up a run on the RBI double. It’s now 83. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher Ianaga. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Williams up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. Movement in the bullpen. Brad Keller up and loosening in the pen. Kitridge also getting ready. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now two and 0. [Music] That’s a strike across the top of the zone. That misses the zone and now three and one in the air left field half settles underneath it puts it away for the out and there’s one down now batting catcher Hunter. Well, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Hunter Feducha Shota in his second season, 31 years old, he joined the team as a free agent. First pitch misses. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. No need to offer at that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. One down, base is empty. Next pitch in for a strike and a count one and two down ball. Fast ball is outside. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. One for three. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. That clips a corner. just missed. [Music] Nope. That one a little bit high. Three and one. Trying to bunt his way on Turner. Not in time. That’s a bunt single. This is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game. And this is just another example of it. and we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first. And stepping in for the Rays, Brandon Laauo cracks his bat and pops him up makes the catch and that’s the third out. So no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Rays eight and the Cubs three here at Wrigley Field. John Shabi with Chris Singleton in the booth. And leading off the bottom of the sixth, Willie Castro. All right, Chicago out to short. Not in time. have an infield knock to start the inning. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the lineup. Your job is to get on base and try to start a rally if you’re leading off an inning. So, an infield single does the job right there. Now, we’ll see if they can make something happen. And up next for Chicago, Pete Crow Armstrong. They say it went 0 and one and the 01. Fast ball is outside. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Cole Sulzer getting ready to go. Jacks getting loose as well. swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. That one ripped way back there. And that one is off the top of the wall. One run across passes third. He wants it all. The relay throw, the tag out. Pretty close play at the plate right there. Always an exciting one, though. And a really nice job by the defense to cut him down. It’s a pretty big blow to a team when you lose a potential run that was so close to getting in there. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the Cubs leadoff man, Nicoer. That one’s in there. 0 and one. One out. Base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the sixth. Out of line out towards center. Pauls it in for the out. Now batting leftielder. Now it’s the switch hitting outfielder in half and he grounds one to the right side over to first and that will end the inning. So it’s one run on two base hits, no errors and no one left. We’re through six full. It’s the Rays eight and the Cubs four. on the north side of Chicago, John Chambi and Chris Singleton. Top of inning number seven. Here’s the third baseman, Junior Camero. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Hard hit left side. zips it across and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Now batting hitter Josh Low. Next is the designated hitter Josh Low. Let’s go. And there’s a foul ball. And it’s fouled away. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two [Music] fights it off. He’ll see another. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Foul ball still 0 and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two away now. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Mangum stands in now and watches strike one. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. Next offering is fouled back. Two down. Nobody on. Struck him out looking. Rays go in order. 1, two, three. But they still lead it by a count of 8 to four. Set for the last half of the seventh. At the plate, Seiya Suzuki. The Cubs in striking distance, but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Right through there for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. And that one almost hit him. Foul ball still a one and two count. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. Kelly batting with one down takes a strike. The Cubbies down by four near the bottom of the seventh. That’s to third. Tosses to first. Two up, two down. Now batting the designated hitter, Carlos Sant. Two out, space is empty. And here’s the DH for the Cubs. Carlos Santana. Check swing. And he went. It’s 0 and one. Oh, and one, swings and misses. That K is his third of the game. And the Cubs are down in order. They’re unable to make a dent in an 8-4 deficit. And we’re back. We go to the eighth. Now up for Tampa Bay. Bobby Seymour. Shota back to work. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. in the air. Left side half under it. Carous it. One up, one down. Now batting second base Tristan Gray. So up next, Tristan Gray. And that misses ball one. No strikes. Next offering is fouled back. Come on. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt. Kelly to first. Ow. Two away now after the drop third strike. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Let’s go. pulls that one foul. Two outs. Cut on and lifted in the air. H moving under it and he makes the catch. And that is that. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Cole Szer. And he’s got a nice lead to work with, so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. Swanson, former first round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Vanderbilt player in college, college World Series player, all that good stuff. But really coming into his own fast ball for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. is now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. One ball, two strikes. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another two and two. Come on. Next offering upstairs in the air left field down the line. Fair ball. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. First baseman Justin Turner. So a man at first and it’ll bring up Justin Turner. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Hit on the ground. Might be two. In there safely. First and second, no outs. And now it’s switch hitting third baseman Willie Castro. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Pete Fairbanks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Jacks also throwing. No outs. runners at first and second [Music] and misses inside. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Fast ball for a strike and it’s two and one. Swanson over at second. Turner at first with no outs. That one the other way. One away. Now batting center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. So digging in Pete Crow Armstrong. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. First pitch just misses. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late to first. Maybe a two ball. The throw to second. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. So they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there through eight full. It’s the Rays eight and the Cubs four. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the catcher, Hunter Feducha. [Applause] And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that one wrapped foul. Misses outside and that is ball one. and they’ll do it again. just off the outside part of the plate. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. ripped to third. Toss to Turner and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting center. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. And first offering is fouled off. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. Comebacker to the mound. Throws to first. Two up, two down. Off speed pitch. And it looked like he just continued his momentum towards home played after releasing that perfect position to make a play and help himself out. And here is Brandon Laauo. That’s the ball. And the one He swings and fouls one off. Swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. To the bottom of the ninth we go. Top of the order. Do up. It’s the Rays eight and the Cubs four. Back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Griffin Jacks. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Back to the top of the order now. So, here’s her now 0 for three in this one. Chris baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits in there at the knees and one and one. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams come swings and blasts one deep to left center. Say goodbye to that one. He flexes his power with that swing. His seventh home run of the season. And they’re chipping away. It’s 85. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. A hard sinker can be a pretty tough pitch because of the late life and movement, but somehow he got the barrel to that pitch, stayed through it. Really nice job of staying on the backside until it was time to transfer that weight and a really nice home run. [Applause] And next for the Cubs in half. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here. The last half of inning number nine. went with the sweeper for the strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. 0 and2 now. Ball one there. And a swing and a miss. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Suzuki the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. Strike [Music] pitch misses inside. And now it’s even one and one. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike and a big swing and a miss. Two and two count. Breaks his bat. There’s a soft liner. Seymour takes it himself. Cubbies with only one out left. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Griffin Jacks departs. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, the closer summoned from the bullpen, Pete Fairbanks. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Pete Fairbanks. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Digging in, Carson Kelly, Fairbanks, 31 years old, and he was a ninth round draft pick back in 2015. And first off is fouled off. gets the outside corner with that one. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one, that’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched it. Fairbanks is just one strike away. Not close with that one. And it’s two and two. And downstairs. fouls it back with two strikes outside and that is ball four very close off the outside corner could have easily been called a strike in that location Carlos Santana the next cub to hit Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. In the air right field pretty well struck that one back there off the scoreboard and out of here. A mammoth blast to right. That one felt good. Second home run of the inning for him. It’s 8-7. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. [Applause] Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Swanson digs in. [Applause] First offering misses badly for ball one. This is the guy they turn to to get the most important outs of the ball game, but they’re going to make him work to get this save. Now it’s belted deep to left. Way out of here. Home run. They do it again. Backto back homers. His 23rd of the year. It’s 88. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. And the Rays manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Pete Fairbanks won’t go any further and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. New arm out of the bullpen. Number 24. He’s making his second appearance of the season. Pitching for Tampa Bay. Number 24. Looks like it’ll be a pinch hitter, Michael Bush. And this is a big bat in this ball game. Michael Bush. [Applause] First offering and it just misses. just missed. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. trying to send this to extra innings. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. [Applause] The other way. That’s a base hit. Now batting. Third base Willie. Two outs, runner at first. Now here is Willie Castro. line drive and this might be trouble. Lead runner around second. Runner around third on his way to the plate. Throw is offline. This one’s over and they walk it off. Scoring one run in the ninth is pretty difficult because the quality of arms and the focus on every single pitch. But to score four runs for the win, an incredible comeback. This showed us a lot. Nice win for this team today. And the final here today, 98. The Cubs go home. A winner for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
