🔴LIVE 🔴Colorado Rockies VS San Diego Padres /Mlb September 12 /MLB THE SHOW 25
an West matchup on the show. It’s the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres’s. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Welcome [Music] San Diego Padres. All right, just about ready for baseball. Today’s starting pitcher, U Darvish. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Yeah. And as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. And that’s a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Next for Colorado, Hunter Goodman. So clutch, you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. First offering and it just misses. Goodman starting as the designated hitter, 25 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round in 2021. Runner at first with no outs here. Let’s go. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one onto O’Harn. Two. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. Now the left fielder Jordan Beck. First pitch misses. Let’s go. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. I got a ball. Swing and a ground ball. And that one gets through into center field. And that keeps the inning alive. batting. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Brentton Doyle. You check swing and he went. That’s strike one. the count. [Music] Two outs. That one fouled hard the other way. And a pitch. Going to count one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. The Rockies strand one. And now the Friars will get their first chance. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in San Diego, today’s starting pitcher, Kyle Freeland. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here that catches the corner. Fernando Tatiz Jr. signed by the White Socks 2015 for $700,000 and then eventually moved in the James Shields trade in June of 2016 and he drops it down the third baseline and he bare hands it and they get the out. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. You have the six spot for them in this one. Jackson Merrill and Boo, he’s a fun at bat to watch. to mean definitely a threat whenever he’s got that bat in his hands. But for me, it’s it’s all about the mechanics. They’re so sound and when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing, so much consistency. That bat stays in the zone for a long time and he squares up the baseball a lot. Luis Ara in the box now. No balls in a strike. Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Swings through it for the K. Tied him up on a fast ball inside. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Two out. Space is empty. Hit hard on the ground to short. Fires over to first. And that is the inning. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Scoreless after one. Top of the second and now Ezekiel Tovar. You talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. Darvish back to work. that clips a corner. And you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. Booen, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Well, here’s an interesting stat on Darish. He has more than 100 wins in his big league career. The only Japanese-born pitcher with more wins is Hideon Nommo. my former teammate and a foul ball. The one-1 tap foul at the plate. No score here in the second and that’s downstairs and the count’s even at two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Pitch misses and now three and two and right back to the mound. Throw to first in time. Two outs. Space is empty. Cal Farmer up to the plate now. All right, let’s go. That’s out to center field. Merryill makes the play and it’s out number three. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Petco Park, there’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand back. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. Let’s goavin. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. [Applause] Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. [Music] And that drops in for a strike. [Music] Here we go. Raone. Next pitch is outside. Carl Dixon working the plate in this one. You know, we often hear and talk about umpires being a pitcher umpire, but Boo Dixon maybe a little bit more hitter friendly than most. He’s kind of tight on the corners. So, we’ll see if that comes into play at all in this one. And downstairs, back toback breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here on the ground to the left and foul ball. Sheets gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Over to second for one. Back to first and that is a double play. They made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. Right through there for a strike. All right, Jackson. started to swing. Held up. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Two and two. Evidently not too impressed with that call. and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So, he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire. And he felt this was his time. Line drive and foul ball. Highfly ball lifted in the air right field. Freeman makes the catch and the inning is over. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left. We played two full. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. Braxton Fulford. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. That misses and that’s ball one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. swings through that one for strike two. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Strike him out up the middle. Croninworth sends it to first. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Knight second base Orlando. Here’s Orlando Aria. That one misses. Ball one. had a foul ball. Strike him out. And that’s downstairs and outside. Oh, great stop. to first. Nicely done for the Owl. Now batting rightielder Tyler Freeman. Back to the top of the lineup. Tyler Freeman will hit next. One for one with a single so far. That’s in there. 0 and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Foul ball. Come on. That one not close. And that’s ball one. Swing and a miss. and he struck him out and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing for the Rockies and we’re still knotted at zero and welcome back to the ballpark. Now, Ryan O’Harn and Singy, we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. [Applause] had a breaking ball. Misses outside. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Late swing fouled to the left in the air. left field down the line pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Second baseman J Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And that one clips the corner on the ground right side. Takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. batting ninth catcher Elias Diaz. And now it’s Elias Diaz right through there for a strike. If I’m at the dish right now, I am aggressive over the heart of the plate. This guy’s been filling up the strike zone. So, you know you’re going to get a good pitch to hit. And as nasty as his stuff is, you might as well take all three swings. Still tied at zero. Last of the third. Got him looking. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Padres’s go down quietly and we are still scoreless. Start of the fourth. So in now for Colorado. Hunter Goodman. Hunter Goodman. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. All these Rockies just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. And there’s one away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. So, next will be the fourhole hitter for the Rockies, Brentton Doyle. He struck out swinging at his first at one fouled off. Next offering is fouled back. Strike them out. Ground ball could be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. And their second double play of the day will end the fourth. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. On now to the bottom of the fourth, no score. And we’re back. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Fernando Tatiz Jr. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Tatis goes 6 feet 3 in 215 pounds and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Drilled in the air out towards right center. Freeman on his way over. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Up next for the Padres, Luis Arise stands in. Struck out on just three pitches last time. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Now, one out to right. Freeman under it. Hauls it in for the And there’s two away. Now batting third base now. Machado up here. He’s 0 for one. that one inside. Ball one. Right side. Hard hit. Tosses to first. Machado out on the play and he has thrown four shut out innings. So they go quietly there. Onto the top of the fifth we go. We’re tied nothing nothing. Back here in San Diego ready now for the fifth inning. Digging in Ezekiel Tovar. Darvish back to work. That misses the zone. One and0. All these Rockies as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. [Music] is in for a strike. Fouled off down the right side. [Music] Darvish delivers and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. He came out of his mechanics there. typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Kyle Keros digging in for the Rockies. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. In for a strike, it’s 0 and one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. One out, base is empty. And a big swing and a miss. Yeah, there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants. Swung on, belted. Lauraniano going back. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting first Kyle Farmer at the plate. Kyle Farmer fly to center his first time. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. And the slider just misses. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. Throws to first and that is that. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books and we still have no score. We head to the bottom of the fifth. So here’s the Padres’s DH Gavin Sheets. You know, these Padres’s just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point, and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. Only two hits allowed so far tonight, Boo. So, I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. Lauriano comes up to hit. He’s 0 for one. Oh, Gloriano. [Applause] There’s the strike. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play and ball one. Way to lay off that pitch down. Swinging a high-fly ball out there towards left field and out number one on the grab. Up next for the Padres’s center fielder Jackson. And now here is Jackson Merrill flyed to right his first time. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. One away tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Last half of inning number five inside and that’s ball two. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Swings through that one out in front that time. throw tag and he’s out. Not a fast runner on the base path. So, this kind of looks like it was a hit and run called from the dugout. Got to make contact some way or somehow because that guy’s not going to be able to steal second base and be safe. Two down. Nobody on and he grounds one to the right side. Arcia. That ends the frame. Nothing doing there for the Friars. Still no score. New inning getting started now. The Rockies catcher Braxton Fulford. And that’s in for a strike. 0 and one tonight. His slider has been really impressive. I mean, tight spin. Seems like the hitters aren’t picking it up out of the hand. Pitch is in the dirt and the count is one and one. outside with a breaking ball. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. Go ahead. Run on base. Here’s the second baseman. Orlando grounded out his first time up. Just missed. right through there for a strike. late swing. Fouled off with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. The one two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Grounded to third. Could be two. Fires to second for one. Onto O’Harn. Two. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Tyler, here’s Tyler Freeman to hit. One for two. Called strike right there. That’s off the inside corner. And now it’s even one and one. And that drops in for a strike. and he chases that one. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. No score back here at Petco Park. And now the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Ryan. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side. Same side he throws from outside low. Ball one. And that one is in for a strike. jumps, but it’s off his glove. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Up next for the Now it’s the second baseman Jake Croninworth grounded out his first time. This one in the air center field. Doyle moving under it. Pulls it in and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Elias Diaz. Here’s Elias Diaz. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. fast ball for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Check swing now. Will look down to first. No, he held up. with a go-ahead run at first here in the bottom of the sixth. Stays alive. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensures safety for the fans. Last thing, as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. line drive, base hit, the throw to third and they’ll have runners at the corners after a one out single. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Runners at the corners here. One away. Now it’s the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes late swinging fouled off. First and third, one down. [Music] That one missed. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. And one and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Rudders are at the corners. One away. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Certainly a strikeout situation right there. The infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss. Really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate. Pretty big two out at bat coming up now. Here’s the shorts stop at the play. Luis Az. Not even close there. And that’s ball one. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. The other way. He’s got it. That is the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the seventh. Now at the plate, Hunter Goodman. He’s a big strong guy. Can untie this game with one swing. Klo cleanly still fires to first. And it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Here’s the left fielder, Jordan Beck. He’s two for two. Line drive caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. Doyle. Here’s the Rockies cleanup hitter, Brentton Doyle. Go for two in this one. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Adrien the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Pavetta also getting ready. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. Darbish kicks, delivers that one pushed foul, trying to keep good speed off the bases. Two outs on the ground. Croninworth tosses to first. It’s a one, two, three inning for the Rockies. [Music] Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s Manny Machado now. Manny Machado. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Right through there for a strike. swinging a foul out of play. That one down the line and that’s just foul. That’s a little bit low. Oh, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. [Music] Still two and two after the foul ball. And that one is inside. [Applause] in the air left field down the line. Carous it and there’s one away. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. designated hitter Gavin Sheets. The next up for the Padres’s a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 51. The rookie right-hander is getting loose. Contrarus getting cranked up as well. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Well, it’s been a very impressive outing so far. His command has been a big part of it. Even when he misses, he misses outside the strike zone, which is exactly what a pitcher wants. Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] And that’s in the dirt. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mount, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. One down, base is empty. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Caros hauls it in. Two away. Unelievable. Now batting leftielder. Here’s Bud Black towards the mound and we’re going to see a pitching change here. Kyle Freeland out of the game and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Number 51 gets the call from the pen. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. Ramon Lauraniano the next up for the Padres’s. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom of the seventh. That one ripped and it’s into the gap around first heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. He was all over that one. I’ll tell you, when you smoke a line drive into the gap like that, I mean, sure, home runs are king, but I feel like nothing makes you feel like a true professional hitter more than a bolt the other way. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Jackson Merrill getting ready to hit and that gets the top of the zone for a strike. That’s to third and it gets by him. Runner around third on his way to the plate. The throws offline. He’s saved on the board first. It’s one zip. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit and that’s a fair ball. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with a pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. First and second, two outs. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s [Music] now. A screamer into the outfield. Freeman pulls it down and that is the third out of the inning, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Adrien Morome. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Well, one-run game. So, in now for Colorado, Ezekiel Tovar and fouled off. looking to get the tying run on base. And that one fouled off. Got him. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. Pretty big strikeout right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any leadoff base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate. Kyle Keros digging in for the Rockies. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] trying to hold a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. And that is out of play. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone. One down, base is empty. Out of the ground to third. Machado throws to first in time. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. And here’s the first baseman, Kyle Farmer. That one misses ball one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock and that puts the tying run on base. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s the catcher, Raxton Fulford. Yeah, the first offering is not close. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So, if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit. But you got to stay within yourself. Two outs. Fought off foul. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front, make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. And there’s the strike. Hard hit right side. They get the force. That’s out number three. One hit, one left. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. It’s the Padres’s one and the Rockies nothing onto the bottom of the eighth. So digging in now for San Diego. Elias Diaz Diaz and first offering is fouled off. swings here and blasts one left field. Beck going back on this one and it is gone. [Applause] He jacks that one out to left and they add on. It’s two nothing. He just sparked this home crowd in a big way. What a swing. [Applause] I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. 0 for three in this one. Ball one there. Well, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. That clips the zone and it’s one and one. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. And that one missing low. Stirring in the Colorado bullpen. Jimmy Herget up and throwing. Peralta warming up as well. And there’s a ball. And there’s a base hit to left. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Luis Arise. And the batter now, Luis Arise. And that’s off the outside edge. One and0. and misses inside. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Tatis gets his lead at first with nobody out. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. [Applause] Tatis runs up the middle, gets it to first. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Now batting third base M manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Number 51 won’t go any further. And he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Jimmy Hen. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact, so command and execution are huge for him. Here’s Manny Machado. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches, even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Just missed. into center and a base hit. Coming home, here’s the throw to the plate. He will score and they’re up by three. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launched that one into center. Man at first. Now the DH for the Padres’s. Gavin Sheets in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Breaking ball through there for a strike. back up the Oh, that got him. Still able to get it there in time. And they do get the outielder. And now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. Stepping in for San Diego, Ramon Lauraniano. One for three. That one off the mark. And that is ball one. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. And that’s off the inside edge and the count is 2 and 0. Just missed. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. So now two on and two outs. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and Guy at the play was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone. First and second, two outs. Now a chance for Jackson Merrill. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. And that one fouled off. Here’s a one-1 out to short. They limit the damage here. So, two runs on three hits, including the home run. No errors, but two are left stranded. Through eight full, it’s the Padres’s three and the Rockies nothing. back now. And on the mound, the closer Robert Suarez coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Here’s the second base, Orlando Aria. Orlando Ari. And that’s outside. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Pop foul out of play off to the right. The 1-1. And that one lifted in the air center field. Arise has it sized up, hauls it in for the owl. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. And now the right fielder, Tyler Freeman. Pitch is in there. Strike one. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. Slapped foul. [Music] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Foul ball still 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Machado. Oh, the throw is over his head around first and hustling for second and he’s going to make it up to second base as that’s a two-base error. Now that just kind of sailed that throw and pulled it across his body towards the right field side of first base. And usually that means the fielder just didn’t square up his shoulders to the target. And I think that throw had just as much to do with his footwork as anything else. One out, runner at second. Here’s Colorado’s DH. Hunter Goodman just missed. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Freeman over at second. One down. off the plate inside. Two and one. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Man at second. And there’s the strike. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. Quick recovery from the misplay pays off for the outielder. So they’re down to their final out. Jordan Beck digging in for the Rockies. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. That one in triple digits. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would had a chance. They’re down to their final strike. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. Suarez is just one strike away. Good eye right there. That turns out to be a really good take right there, but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Two outs. And they’ll do it again. Foul ball still a one and two count. That’s down and in. way high pressure mountain right here with the tying run in the on deck circle. He’s got to find the strike zone. He swings and drives one out to deep left field. That one’s back there. Tattooed to tater town and gone. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 3-2. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Robert Suarez won’t go any further tonight and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound, Nick Pava. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. typically at least one in inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. Two outs, nobody on. Next to hit for the Rockies, Brentton Doyle. First pitch and he just misses. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Fast ball is outside. Hit to right and that should do it. He’s got it. Ball game. The Padres’s hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Great pitchers duel in this one. and you get to a certain point where each pitcher is trying to outdo the other, go a little bit deeper into the ball game. And for these pitchers, it really came down to a few key at bats. This was a fun one to watch.
