🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals VS Milwaukee Brewers / September 12/ Mlb Tv envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
consecutive. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. Live from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, MLB the show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch coming your way next. So, just about set now. Today’s starting pitcher, Freddy Peralta. And Singi, he likes pitching at home. Well, truly for him, there is no place like home. He’s been so dominant here. And as a teammate, you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has. The fans expect it and I think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher. Even though we don’t see the same splits on the road, we’re going to start to see that translate as well. All right, ready to go here now. It’s the right fielder Lars Nbar. And that’s way high. And this one is off and running. And there’s a ball. Brewers. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. And it’s two and one now. Foul ball there. Pitch misses and the count’s full. Fouls that off to the left and we’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Oh, looking for a swinging miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. This one in the dirt. Tag save at second. And good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Well, Boo not exactly making him earn it right now with the walk. And now a wild pitch. He’s going to need to find a way to refocus out there, get back in the strike zone before this unravels on him. Newbar stands at second with no outs. Just off the inside edge. I think it’s very important to establish the inside part of the plate early. Sets the tone for the rest of the game. Let’s go man at second. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Brewers. And a foul ball. No outs. runner on second. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Strike him out. Got him swinging for the strike out. Some high cheese for strike three. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Runner at second here, one gone. a little out front there as he swings through it. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Strike him out. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Nbar rounds third headed for the plate. He’s safe and it’s one- nothing. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. One down. Here’s the veteran first baseman Wilson Contreras. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. the pitch. Well, you’ve got to establish the inside part of the plate early. And that sends a message not just to this hitter, but to the rest of the lineup as well. In the dirt. He’s in there. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Man, I got to think something is definitely off with his delivery right now. Already the second wild pitch that he’s thrown in just the first inning. Not a good sign. Fast ball is outside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. And ball four, two aboard. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Two on, one out. Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. St. Louis. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores and they take a two-run lead. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. First and second, one out. So Jay-Z will hit next. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. And a curve misses outside. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. A short stop takes the ball. Well, Boog early on in this one having a hard time getting settled in. He’s not showing control to throw strikes and let alone to throw it where he wants in the strike zone. This could be a tough one for him. Next pitch is outside. Strike him out. Two on, one out and they’re all loaded up. That’s a tough one to swallow right there if you’re on the mound. You’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. That’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Now a chance for Pedro Pah. That one at 95 missed up top. And that’s ball one. Contrarus the runner at third. Gorman on second to Jay-Z at first. One gone. That just misses and the count now two and nothing. Pressure’s on right here. 20 count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. Right through there for a strike. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Next pitch is outside. Three balls in a strike. Look, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Late on that fast ball. Ooh, Baya. You got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. Base is loaded. One away. And a swing and a miss. Huge strike out there. Just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there. Not much to it. And I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location. And those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say, “How’d I miss that?” But you know, it happens. Jos Fairmine now at the plate. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. on the ground right side. Terra over to first in time. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Cardinals two and the Brewers coming to bat. Back here in Milwaukee, today’s starting pitcher, Michael McGrevy. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Bryce Terang leading things off and takes a strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. Well, that was the cutter down and in right there. And typically, if you’re going to have a chance with the pitch, if it’s down, that’s your best chance of doing anything with it. It’s kind of like a mini slider, just with a little less vertical movement. But still, that one tied him up and he couldn’t get the barrel to it. breaking ball in there for a strike. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat. If he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. On the ground to third. Get on your horse. Fires over to first here tonight. An efficient start to the home first. Two away. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. And something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure, Chris. Right now, it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. and before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use. Christian Yell stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. Next offering in there for a strike. One ball, one strike. Just missed. One straight swung on. Belted. This one’s got a chance. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. That ball exploded off his bat end off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence. And it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. Now here’s Jake Bowers. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. The strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches. That can be the key to winning perhaps later on. So a good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. Next offering upstairs. The one-1 is fouled off. And now it’s one and two. That one is upstairs. ripped on the ground to second. Handles, throws to first and the inning is over. Milwaukee leaves one and they’re down two nothing. New inning getting started and stepping in for the Cardinals, Nathan Church. Peralta back to work just off the inside edge. Singi, he wasn’t real sharp in the first. Got hit around, but really more so didn’t throw a ton of strikes. Well, he’s just got to find a way to settle down. He was clearly fighting himself out there. Not really finding the strike zone, walking batters. So, we’ll see if he can get back on track and fill up the zone a little bit more. Clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one. Little bit of a low zone boo from Clyde. Nothing crazy though. Pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their offsp speed stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate on the ground right side. Terra whips it to first on the run. Nicely done for the out. So up next, Lars Nbar the walk and a run scored his first time. Nukebar bats left, throws right, hitting lead off in today’s game and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2018. And the O2 keeps the at going with a foul ball. Pitch misses there and the count one and two. swings and misses. Struck him out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Two down, base is empty. Ivon Herrera digs in now. Struck out swinging his first time. And the slider catches the zone. The strong second inning is a confidence builder for him. A relief for his manager. Doesn’t have to get into that bullpen quite as early. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. Next offering is in the dirt. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. St. Louis goes down in order. Redbirds down quietly. They’re up two nothing. We head to the bottom of the second up now for Milwaukee. S Pick Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Check swing called strike. That’s strike one. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. And he hits a ground ball right side. Leadoff man retired here in the second. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. Here’s the rookie third base. That misses the zone. One and0. Strike one. swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Fights that one away. Still one and two. One out. Base is empty. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. That one just misses. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Next for the Brewers, Blake Perkins rips one to right and that’s a fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second and that’s a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Danny Jansen to hit here. Come on, Danny. This one chopped on the ground, but foul. Perkins at second with two down. St. Louis swings through that one. He’s clearly out there throwing pitchers pitches in this situation. First base is open. He walks him. No big deal. Got him swinging. Brewers strand one. They trail things here. Two nothing. And we’re back. Here’s the left fielder, Alec Burlson. Berles. Brewers. That’s inside. Ball one. You know, these cards doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. Swang and a miss. There’s that change up line drive, base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Couple of hits in a row for him here. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Ruer at first with no outs here. though Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens and a swing and a miss now five strikeouts for him on the mound. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. Every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage. And a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Gorman stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Brewers. That’s a little bit low inside. Just missed. And there’s the strike. Get out of here, Cardinals. That’s in there. Three balls, two strikes. Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. Man at first, one away. Sit him down. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Back-to-back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. All right, Brewers. The shorts stop takes a ball. Brewers. And that misses and it’s 2 and 0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. And a foul ball. That one missed. The 3-1 swinging a foul out of play. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. fights it off. He’ll see another This one smoked could be trouble. Lead runner makes the turn at second. Coming home. He’ll score easily. He was all over that one. tried to get inside on him, but he was ready for it. Just kept his hands in and turned on the pitch. Quick bat through the zone. And here is Pedro Pah. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Right side. Hurry. Throw over to Bowers. They limit the damage here. Cards on the board with this double. It’s now three nothing. Back here at American Family Field. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Joseph Ortiz. Line drive. And there’s one down. He was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. This is Bryce Terra. Struck out swinging his first time. Just missed. pitch is in there and it’s one and one and there’s a ball hit hard base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one-out single. There’s Jackson Cheurio. Not only is he a young singing, he’s the first player born in 2004 to reach the major leagues. Woo! Is that supposed to make us feel good about ourselves? No. Terra leads off first with one away. Here goes the runner pitching for a strike. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. Well, we all know this team is struggling right now and sometimes you just got to do something different to generate some offense. A little more aggressive right there to put the pressure on the opponent. We’ll see if it pays off on the scoreboard for this team. Man at second. Strike two. One ball. two straight winer. Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. One out and a runner at second. Here’s the pitch. Ruer goes again. There’s a ball. Throw to third and he’s in there easily. Wow. That’s a pretty elite throwing arm right there from the catcher spot. Pretty daring for him to try to steal third right there. But he gets the bag. Maybe the element of surprise was what came in because he’s not used to guys running on him. And right there, stealing third base probably caught him off guard a little bit. Brewers lifted in the air right field. Nuke Bar makes the grab. Runner tags from third. Throw is offline and he scores. And it’s now a two-run game. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. got the job done. Here comes Christian Yelich, the MVP in 2018, the runner up in 2019. There’s the swing and a miss. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. Foul ball. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third. Right side, hard hit. Tosses to first. Yell is out. Third out and that ends the frame. So they get one run, one hit, no errors, and no one left on. Three innings complete. It’s the Cardinals three and the Brewers won. Start of the fourth. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Fermine. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. Mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October. Next offering is fouled back. The 02. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. And here comes the Brewers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. That does it for Freddy Peralta. two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. On the mound now, Jared Kanig. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Now up for St. Lewis Nathan Church grounded out his first time. Let’s go Milwaukee. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Yell makes the grab for the second half. So the lineup flips over Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals, he is struck out and he is walked and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That missed inside and the count even one and one. That one missing inside. That one called a strike. Two and two. Two out. Space is empty. Still two and two after the foul ball. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two down. Nobody on. And it remains two and two. On the ground out to short in plenty of time to first. That’s out number three. So they go quietly there to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Cardinals three and the Brewers won. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Jake Bowers. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, these Brewers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. and down on strikes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Just overmatched on that fast ball right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. S Freelick getting ready to hit. Grounded out his first time. That is upstairs for ball one. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is in for a strike. And a base hit up the middle. So, a man aboard now with one away. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Now, the third baseman went down on strikes his first time through. And that’s in for a strike. Freelick at first. One gone. Puts it in the air out towards left center. Burlson on the move to the gap. Puts it away for the out. Now batting center fielder Blake Perkins. Blake Perkins up now for the Brewers. Doubled his first time. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Pahes makes the grab and that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Cardinals three and the Brewers won. We go to the top of the fifth now. The number two hitter, Ivon Herrera. Herrera. Kanik back to work. Herrera goes 5 feet 11 in 24 years old and he’s usually a catcher. Today he gets off his legs a bit. He’s the DH on the ground and it stays fair. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. There’s a line drive to left field and that’s a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. First and second, no outs now up the Cardinals number four hitter Wilson Contrus. And that’s in there at the knees. fouled off. He was late. First and second, no outs. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Headed for the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they lead by three. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Here’s Nolan Gorman. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach to go out there and talk to him just a little bit. You know, these Cardinals really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished inside. Two balls, two strikes. And that’s a strike out looking. That was pretty nasty. And now it’s going to be Thomas Sajay-Z. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. The shorts stop takes the ball. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play. Two on, one out. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. Ortiz makes the grab. Two down. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jared Kanig will depart. And the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Quinn Pster will take over here. Gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. And now the Cardinals catcher, Pedro Pah. Brewers. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Chris, you look at it. These are the spots where pitchers can come on, pitch well, instill some confidence in the manager, and all of a sudden they’re pitching higher leverage spots of the postseason. Well, in this final month, I mean, this is an audition period for the call-ups, but it’s also for that marginal reliever that was on the roster throughout the season to maybe step up and be on that playoff roster. Inside, just missed. So, definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpen mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. Two on, two outs. Right down to shoot and the count is three and one. Swing and a tapper that rolls. Foul. Burlson the lead runner out at second. Contrarus on first with two down. Swing and a miss. And that is that. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Cardinals four and the Brewers won. Bottom of the inning. Here’s the Brewers catcher now. Danny Jansen. Danny Jason just missed. Well, these Brewers just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. That one missed. Now three and 0. That clips a corner. Swanging a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. One down. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Now it’s the shorts stop. Joseph Ortiz swinging a miss. Strike one. Just a bit tardy there. Not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed. Next offering is fouled back. And ball one. The Red Birds leading by three. Last half of inning number five on the ground right side. Oh man for the fifth inning moving along. Two quick outs. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order and stepping in is the speedy Bryce Terang. One for two. And that one hammered and it one hops the wall and that’s a double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So runner at second, two down. Jackson Chorio the next to hit. Ground ball right side and foul ball. Let’s go Brewers. And that one fouled off. Man on second. Two down. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Let’s go Brewers. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s 42. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Yelli stepping into the box now. That’s outside and that’s ball one. Get throw over to first. And another ball. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Right through there for a strike. Chio off of first with two away. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 42. Back after this on the show. Top of the sixth inning. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Josemine. Second base Jose Verine just off the inside edge. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Grant Anderson preparing to come on if needed. Miserowski getting cranked up as well. Out to short. Ortiz whips it across. Now one gone in the top of the sixth. Nathan Church and up next for St. Louis, Nathan Church. 0 for two in this one. inside corner and that’s called a strike and there’s a foul ball that just misses now one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. got him swinging, pulled the string on the change up. You know, varying speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. As you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance and that’s all you got to do sometimes. N bar in the box here lets that one go for a ball. And that is in for a strike. And it’s one and one. There’s the strike. Come on, Brewers. And that one ripped to left. Fair ball around first and hustling for second. He’s there. It’s a two out double all over that one right there. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. So runner at second, two down. Herrera now at the plate. One for three. And that’s downed away. And that one ripped into right and foul ball. Let’s go Milwaukee. That one’s in there. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Two outs and one in scoring position. And a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. a double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. To the bottom of the six we go. 456. Coming up, it’s the Cardinals four and the Brewers two. Back here in Milwaukee. Bottom of the six. Now, the Brewers cleanup hitter Jake Bowers. There’s a strike. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Number 49 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Gray warming up as well. Backed off the plate that time. fouls it off. Still one and two. Come on, Brewers. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Michael McGrevy won’t go any further tonight. Pretty good effort and he exits with a lead. We’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back. So they bring on the veteran Sunny Gray. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. So digging in, S freelick taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Late swing fouled to the left. One down. Base is empty. Fast ball is outside. The 1-1 is fouled off. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Here’s the third baseman. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. This guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. That one misses and it’s one and two with the tying run at the plate here in the bottom of the six. Foul ball still a one and two count with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. Stays alive. swings and misses. Struck him out. He swung over top of the curveball. Oh, that’s a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie. And you can see why. It’s not a looping slow curve. He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end. Blake Perkins up now for the Brewers. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. Two outs and another ball. And that is out of play. That one fouled off. Freelick the runner at first with two gone. That one is absolutely belted. Church raging back towards the wall. stretches out and holds it in. What was that? And the Redbirds bullang comes through. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals four and the Brewers two. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Rob Zestris. He’s doing the ball very well overall this season. He’s been really tough to get to. You see that erra and that’s where you love to be. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson, three for three with three singles. Just missed upstairs. Two balls, no strikes. You get to this part of the order. Yeah, there’s some pop there, but more likely there are some base hits. So, very important to be patient. Let the pitcher walk you, if you will. Base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. And up to hit is Wilson Cont. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. And that misses. And it’s two and one. All right, Brewers. And there’s the strike. Nobody out. Runner at first. That’s towards center and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one down. Now batting third baseman Nolan Gorman. So up next, Nolan Gorman. Brewers. Just missed. Two balls. No strike. Next offering is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Ortiz. There’s one. Over to Bowers. That’s two. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. Midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Cardinals four and the Brewers two. And we’re back. Now it’s Jansen. Catcher Danny Jansson. That clips the zone. That’s strike one. That big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit. Looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate. Make it happen. Come on. Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. I mean, you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Joseph Ortiz up now for the Brewers. And he bunts, but that’s a foul ball. Bases empty, one away here in the bottom of the seventh. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Nabs it two away. Now batting second base. So digging in Bryce Terang. And that misses one and0. That one ripped. Brings it in for the third out. Gone in order are the Brewers. They trail it here. Four to2. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jacob Miserowski just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in Thomas Jay-Z that’s in there. Strike one. Miserowski a 67 righty 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2022. And that one hit to first and he takes it himself for the out. Pedro Pah digs in now. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Oh yeah, smoked on the ground to second. Terang over to first in time. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Now batting second base Jose Fermine. So two down now. And here is Jose Fairine. Let’s go. Check swing called strike and it’s 0 and one and that one just missed off the outside edge. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. outside and a count two on one. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Nothing doing there for St. Louis as they can’t add to their 4-2 lead. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 49. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. And now the DH Jackson Choro Jackson. Just missed. Activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero the closer getting cranked up for a possible save opportunity. Alcala also getting ready. One ball, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. That one not close. It’s two and two. Come on. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. So, the bullpen doing a nice job backing up the effort from their starter. Yeah, we’ve seen some pretty excellent pitching out of this staff so far. I mean, they’ve come in ready to do their job and get outs. They’ve been pretty tough to get to in this one. Come on, Brewers. Yell in the box now. No balls in a strike. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. And that’s outside and one and one. The Brewers trailing by two here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s a base hit. Well, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a T. One gone runner at first. Jake Bowers will hit next. 0 for three in this one and fouled off. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. The tying run at the plate. Way to lay off that pitch down. Throw to first. Yell dives back in. Tying run at the plate. Off the mark there now. Two balls in a strike. Squirts away a little bit and now a man into scoring position. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. This one driven deep way back there and it’s gone. We are tied. He leaves the yard to right and we’re starting over. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Next for Milwaukee Selick ball one there. Still only one out here in the inning. And that skips in the dirt. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. That one’s in there now. Two balls in a strike. pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. Two two on the way. That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. Back to work. 3-2 now. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. No throw. He’s in safely. And now there’s a runner at first. Stringing him together. That’s three hits in a row. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Number 49 out of the game. And it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching new pitcher for the Cardinals, Jorge Alcala. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per inning. One down, runner at first. Now the third baseman 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And that one fouled off. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in scoring position. Looked like it was a little bit up. This is one of those situations defensively where you can’t try to do too much. You got to make sure that you field the ball cleanly and get one out first. It’s going to be tough to get two with this kind of speed in the batters box. Fly ball to right. Nuke Bar moves under it, hauls it in for the out. Now batting center fielder Blake. So now a pinch hitter Isaac Collins. Big spot for him here. and takes low for ball one. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. Swinging a foul out of play. And a count one and two. That’s down and in. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. And now first and second with two outs. One of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity. And he came through for his club right there. First and second, two outs up now for Milwaukee. Danny Jansen pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Freelick the lead runner at second. Collins at first. Two out in the inning. Next offering upstairs and another ball. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. swings and misses and the count is three and one. Fought off foul. Struck him out. Really fooled him with a breaking ball there. Two runs for Milwaukee on the dinger. It’s now tied 4-4. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Abner, he’s been so good against lefties. Pitch hitter coming on. Mason win. A critical at bat in this game for him. And there’s a ball. Milwaukee. That one’s in there. And that is strike one. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Tied at four. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. But hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes. Slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough if you’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Now up for St. Louis. Lars Nukebar splits the plate 0 and one. All tied up here in the top of the ninth. Brewers. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. Action in the pen down there. Grant Anderson, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. check swing called strike. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. He goes down looking. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Brewers on the ground to third. throw over to Bowers and that is that nothing doing for the offense that time and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and we are tied 44 now into the game. Victor Scott, he’ll be patrolling center field now. A move being made for a pinch hitter, William Contreras. He represents the winning run. Alcala back to work and that’s a little bit high and that’s ball one and another ball. Oh, that pitch not even close. A two- count now. He can’t be over aggressive. He’s got to make sure that pitch is right on a tee for him. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Andre Palante appears to be getting loose. Next offering is in for a strike. You got this Milwaukee. And that’s in the dirt. Got him looking. And that’s the first out. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Here’s the second baseman, Bryce Terang. Off the mark there. Ball one. 4-4 in the ninth. So, two balls and no strikes. Fouled off. He was late. Base is empty. One away here. The last half of inning number nine. Hit in the air. Right field. He’s got it. And there’s two down. Now batting the designated hitter, Jackson. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. Oh, he came up clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. That’s a strike. It’s 0 and one. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. And that’s downstairs and outside. Next offering upstairs and a swinging a miss. Hit hard on the ground to the right side and he can’t come up with it. The throw won’t get there in time and they don’t get the out. Bang bang at first. Great hustle to beat that one out. Fielder got a piece of it, but the way that thing came off the bat, no surprise at all. He couldn’t pick it cleanly. It’s a very difficult play and that swing definitely was deserving of a hit. So, two down. Here’s the left fielder, Christian Yelich. And that one fouled off. Alcala picks over there. Trying to send this to extra innings. Swinging a drive back there on its way. Ball game. A massive home run. A walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth. Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard, you’re creating the most pressure packed scenario, and what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing in the bat, nice win for the team. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami saying so long.
