🔴LIVE 🔴Cincinnati Reds VS Oakland Athletics /September 12 /MLB THE SHOW 25
Inner League Baseball on MLB The Show. It’s the Cincinnati Reds taking on the Athletics. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just a little bit away from first pitch and on the hill, Mason Barnett. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today, but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. TJ Fredel, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. That one drifts inside. That’s outside and it’s three and0. There’s the strike. [Applause] And there’s ball four. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Now, it’s the right fielder, Noel V. Marte. That one misses. And that’s ball one. Here’s the pitch. Runner goes and that one is lifted in the air. Leed gets under it. Makes the grab. One down. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. This group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Ellie Dea Cruz at the plate and takes high there. Fredel the base runner at first with one out. Yeah, that’s fouled off. The Reds signed Ellie in 2018, but it took a few years for him to stand out in their minor league system. In 2021, he went from an unranked prospect to a player on a fast track to the majors. Few scouts out there believe a growth spurt helped change Ellie’s entire career. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. And now it’s Austin Hayes. And that one upstairs, ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Runners at first and second with one gone. This one in the air right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the two away now. [Applause] And now it’s Gavin Lux. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. in the air out to center flying after this one. That’ll drop in as he plays it on a hop and they strike first as they take a one- nothing lead to the plate and he’s out. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Reds one and the Athletics coming to bat. Back here with my pal Singi, today’s starting pitcher, Andrew Abbott. What do we have on him? Yeah, and as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. Swing and a miss. And a count is 0 and two. Just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Hard hit left side. Zips it to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. Let’s take a look at our lineup. Singi, we’re looking at a young lineup here. Not much experience, but they’re going to bring a lot of energy to the field. Yeah, and that’s just it, Boo. We expect this lineup to play hard no matter what. They are an exciting group to watch. Now, here is Shay Langalers singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. That one outside. One and0. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That’s inside. Langeliers the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Here’s the pitch. Run around the goal. That’s in for a strike. Throw to second. Ow. Usually when you see a team try to steal a base in the early innings, it tells you they want to be aggressive on offense. Try to force the defense to make plays and slow them down. That’s exactly what they did right there. So, we’ll see if that caught stealing changes the offensive approach moving forward. Two outs. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. [Music] Fast ball is outside. Baby, let’s go. And misses inside. Two outs. Base is empty. struck him out looking. A’s go quickly and quietly there. Still behind by a count of one to nothing. New inning getting started in now for the Reds. Number 16. Number 16. Barnett back to work and that’s off the inside edge and it’s one and0 that one missing inside. Rusty Valentine calling balls and strikes B. Something I hear from hitters about Valentine is they know they don’t have to protect off the plate too much in two strike counts. And that can be a big deal in terms of your confidence and seeing some pitches in that at bat. And that is in for a strike and the count is two and two. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. here. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. Right side hard hit. He takes it on his own. One out in the second. Batting seventh, catcher Tyler Stevenson. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Tyler Stevenson. Foul ball there. One down. Base is empty. Blind drive. That’s a base hit into right field. Runner on at first with one gone. And now Key Brian Hayes, good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Check swing called strike. ball one there. swang and a miss. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Kicks and fires. battling here as he fouls it away. Man at first, one away. And that one gets past the catcher. Stevenson into scoring position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility. Well, that right there erases the chance at the inning ending double play. So, good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch. Changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way. Liner base hit. Stop sign goes up at third. runners at the corners with one out. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. So, up next, Matt Mlan and that misses. And that is ball one. inside. Just missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Here comes Stevenson in to score. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Now, here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Friedel. The walk and a run scored his first time. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Hayes at second. Mlan over at first with one away. Swing and a miss. 0 and two now. swings through it for the K. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Next for Cincinnati, Noelv Marte. And that’s in there at the knees. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top of the second. And there’s a ball swing and a miss as he was late. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game in the dirt, but kept close. Throw, save, and both runners move up on the wild pitch. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch on the ground. Curts takes it himself. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Bottom half of inning number two. Now it’s going to be number 32. Swing it a miss. Strike one. You got it. That’s a little bit low. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first. Daryl Hernese the next to hit. [Music] Hit in the air center field. And there’s one down. Batting six. First baseman number 16. Now it’s the rookie first baseman Nick Curts. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. [Applause] That’s outside. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Baby, let’s go. And that’s downed away. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. And ball four, two aboard. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Next to hit, Zack Gellof. Strike one. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. That’s off the mark. One and one. Way to lay off that pitch down. On the corner for a strike and the count one and two. Tying run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. Fights that one away. Still one and two. the other way. Pulls it down and they’re two away. Batting eight catcher Willie Mccyver. And here’s the rookie catcher, Willie McCyver. I know we’re still early in the stages of this game, but this at bat has the potential of being a differencemaker. You got to stay calm in the box. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Just missed. off the plate inside. Two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. I think the key is arm action on the change up. When you can sell it like a fast ball, you drop the velocity, you get the swinging mess, and you walk off the field. Top half of the third inning. Stepping in is the switching shortstop. Ellie Dea Cruz. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Pop foul out of play off to the right. So, here’s a fun note on Ellie. He became the youngest player in high a ball to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. And it gets better. He did it again two games later. Those are the type of games that tend to get you promoted in the minors. gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That misses the zone. One and two. The count. Ground ball right side. Handles throws to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now the DH Austin Hayes fly to right his first time. Ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. And they add a run. It’s 3 nothing. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Mason Barnett is done. Not what they were hoping for from the opener. So, we’ll see a new arm on the mound when we get back. Ovaldo comes on now. Pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. One down. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Lux. That’s in there. 0 and one. Lux measures 6 feet 2 in, 190 lbs, and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Wisconsin. One out. Base is empty. And a seed into center. That’s a base hit. Now batting number 16. Man at first with one gone. And here’s the first baseman. And he chases a high fast ball there. one strike. And that one fouled off. Lux over at first with one away. Hats and misses. It’s a strike out. just overmatched on that fast right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. So two down now and here is Tyler Stevenson one for one with a single and a run scored so far in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. knee high. That’s in for a strike. It’s amazing to look up and see 88 mph on that change up. Back in the day, that was a pretty good fast ball, but with high velocities these days, that speed differential is right where it needs to be. just misses the mark outside the zone. One ball and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back now. JJ BLJ [Music] way inside gets out of the way. on the ground right side in plenty of time to first and a quick out number one now batting number five Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s Wilson a guy who’s really opened up some eyes in his first major league season hoping to finish strong in September two swing and a slow roller. Hayes slings it across. Two up, two down. Now batting hitter. Shay Langalers will hit next. His home and away splits there. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. Fast ball for a strike. 0 and one. Tough spot right here. Quick inning, two quick outs. You got to be patient, but you also have to be somewhat aggressive to not miss your pitch early in the count. Just missed. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. And one, two, three go the A’s. They trail it here. 3 nothing. Out of the fourth at the plate. Key Brian Hayes. Key Brian Hayes. Not even close there. And that’s ball one. And that one missing low. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Now fly ball to right center. Rooker on the move to the alley. Pulls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting second. Matt Mlan getting ready to hit. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. And he takes a strike. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Cut on and lifted in the air. Rooker tracks it down for the out. Now batting center fielder TJ Fel. Here’s the center fielder, TJ Fredel. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Offense held in check there. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Reds three and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Brent Rooker. Let’s go and go, baby. Let’s go. Outside ball one. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Yazer Zuluetta up and throwing for Terry Francona. Sudter the lefty warming up as well. Just missed. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Two and one now. Check. Swing. Did he go? No, he didn’t. Almost got him to commit, but he held back. Late with the swing there. fights it off. He’ll see another and a pop off right side. Foul territory [Music] and that drops foul and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Well, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. And now the center fielder one for one with a single so far. Missed with a change up and it’s one and0. Highfly ball down the left field line. That one back there, leaping and he brought it back. Wow. I’ll tell you, things start feeling pretty dicey when you’re tracking one into the corner like that. So, I love the effort to leave his feet to make an awesome leaping catch. Timed it just right and held on for the out. Definitely a highlight real play. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. That one ripped left field and that’s going to bang against the wall around first heading for two. And they hold him at second. Maybe this is going to be the moment they start the comeback. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. MVP in the air left field and that will end the inning. The A’s strand one still down three nothing. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Elvis Alvarado. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season. Averaging more than one per inning. In now for the Reds. Noelv Marte bowl for two in this one. First offering and it just misses. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. drilled in the air out towards right center. Sizing this one up. Makes the catch for the out. And there’s one down. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. That’s out number two. Now betting the designated hitter, Austin. Two down, base is empty. So now here’s the Red’s cleanup hitter, Austin Hayes. He’s already homerred here in this one. And ball one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Gets the outside corner with that one. and now two and one. Grounds one to short. Third out and that ends the frame. Nobody left for Cincinnati, but they lead it three nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Stepping in, Zack Gellof. Zack Gellof. Abbott back to work and a foul ball. You know, these athletics just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. And one and two. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Fly ball center field. Fredel makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting Willie Macyver up next for the A’s. Struck out swinging his first time. Fast ball for a strike. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. One down, base is empty. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Ca strikes him out for the second time today. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Two outs, space is empty. JJ Blade up next for the A’s. Just off the outside edge and that is ball one. And another ball. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. And that’s outside. Three and one. Jacob Wilson in the on deck circle for the A’s. Now this offense has just been locked down. Almost five full innings of shut out baseball. Got him looking and he did not like the call and the A’s are gone in order. They trail in this one three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top six and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Gavin Lux. Alvarado measures 6’4 in 185 lbs. They got him off of waiverss earlier this season. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Number 58 up and throwing. Ferguson warming up as well. Not close with that one. And now it’s even. One and one. Lined. And that’s a base hit. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in, but he’s in there easily. Now batting number 16. And now the first baseman. Close but called a ball. And that’s ball one. Well, these Reds digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve launched six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. That one not close. And that’s ball two. That one fouled hard the other way. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch misses and the count is three and one. Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Nabs it. Runner tags second. He makes it to third. Good base running to move up with only one out. Tyler Stevenson. Here’s the Red’s catcher, Tyler Stevenson, a former first round pick. And he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Fast ball is outside. Lux stands at third with one gone in the inning. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And there’s two away now. Batting Ke Brian Hayes. One for two. Yeah, there’s the strike. Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Runner in from third to extend their lead. comes through with the RBI. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. Now it’s the second baseman, Matt Mlan. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And another ball line drive and that’s a base hit to right. Here comes Hayes around third. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s 5 nothing. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Late swing. Fouled to the left. That one ripped and an automatic double as it hops the fence. I think he’s having some mixed emotions down there at second base. And I wouldn’t blame him for being a little frustrated with the ball hopping over the wall. I mean, that at bat was good enough to produce a run, but instead the automatic double halts the lead runner at third and just sort of a bittersweet at bat. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Elvis Alvarado out of the game and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. So they turn to the lefty in this spot, Brady Basso. He last pitched two days ago. Brady Basso. Next for Cincinnati, Noelv Marte. 0 for three in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] And that is out of play. Two outs, two in scoring position and a sweeper misses for a ball. in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate and that’ll load the bases. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Cruz, two outs, bases full in now for the Reds. Ellie Dea Cruz, one for three, swinging a miss. One in the on deck circle. You really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball. Last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count. Right through there for a strike. Mlan the runner at third. Fredel on second. Marte at first. Two out of the inning. Swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. Good job at damage control right there. Two runs in the inning but they strand three. Top of the order. D up in the home half of the six. It’s the Reds five and the A’s nothing. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now it’s the shortstop. Jacob Wilson. Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. check swing and he went and the count one and one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits in the air left field down the line. Fair ball. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Jay Langalers. And now Terry Francona makes his way out of the dugout towards the mound and he’ll make a change. Andrew Abbott gives way and a nice effort out of him. No doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Tony Santion gets the call from the pen. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to them. Now the number two hitter Shay Langelers. Oh, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Swinging a ball driven out to center. That one’s back there. It’s a bomb. He’ll circle the bases. his 31st home run of the season. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 5-2. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. [Applause] [Applause] Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Pitch misses. Ball one. That one missed. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Music] Now a blooper back behind Short. Takes it in for the Owl. Now batting center. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Thomas. Go, baby. Up the middle. Dela Cruz. Now only one out remaining. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff. Just like we saw. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Tony Santion done for the night. It’s a three-run game. and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Emlio Pagan comes on trying to close it out. Save opportunity for him right here and he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Alio Pagan. So they’re down to their final out. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. Just off the inside edge. And there’s a foul ball. popped up right side. Sizes this one up. That’s the ball game. Well, a three- pitch save. This guy might feel cheated a little bit. Gets in the ball game. Wants to show off his arsenal and really didn’t get that opportunity, but I think he’ll take it. Whenever you can get that save and do it efficiently, he’ll be ready to pitch tomorrow. And your final score 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shi saying so long.
