🔴LIVE 🔴Kansas City Royals VS Philadelphia Phillies/ September 12 / Baseball TV/MLB THE SHOW 25

go in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. It’s the Kansas City Royals taking on the Philadelphia Phillies. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about set to go now. And on the hill here today, Jesus Lazardo. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. So, up now for Kansas City, Mike Yremsky. And that’s him for a strike underway here at Citizens Bank Park. That misses one ball, one strike. Well, second pitch of this game and already getting squeezed a little bit. And that one popped in the air left field. Marsh one down. And here now the lineup for the Royals. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Mike El Garcia. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Pulls that one foul. Whit Jr. is one of only two players in ALL history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Boo. The other player, Julio Rodriguez. He was all over that one. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. One gone runner at first. Now it’s the DH Vinnie Pasquentino. So clutch you could argue. And now this one’s a rocket to right way back there. Gone. His second homer of this series. It’s two nothing. He sent the first pitch over the wall. Must have dinner reservations cuz he wasn’t wasting any time at the plate in that at bat. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. That one drilled left field. And it hits the fence. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just a solid swing right there. caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Hard hit left field. Base hit. They fired in quickly. So it’s first and second with only one away. Backto back singles. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. And now Jack Kaggle Leone. There’s the strike. Two on, one out. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Headed for the plate. The throw in. He’ll score easily and they lead by three. They are really feeding off each other. That’s five hits in a row. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. who just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Two on, one out. Jonathan Indie at the plate. Just missed. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Late on that fast ball. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Orion Kirkering appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. STM getting loose as well. The one-two that one hit to right and that’ll fall for a base hit. And they hold the runner at third, but the bases are loaded now with one out. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up, and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. swings through that one. 0 and one. There’s the strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter, not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Perez at third. Kaggle Leone over at second. India at first. One gone. Pitch misses there. It’s two and two. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. in the air left side and makes the grab and there are two down batting night catcher Luke Mey. So they’re all loaded up. Here’s Luke Mey been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. Check swing and he held up. Hey, it’s still early in this ball game, but you know, this at bat right here could be a big factor in the outcome. You think about it, there’s a chance to really blow this thing open right here. Just missed. Boo. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Two outs. Well, out there on the mound, he’s got to go right after this hitter because you don’t want to turn this lineup over. This is the guy that you’ve got to get that final out, get out of this inning. At the belt and fires. Swing and a high-fly ball. that one out towards left center field. Way back there, it’s gone. Grand slam. He circles the bases. It’s their second home run of the inning and they boost their lead. It’s 7 nothing. You know, more than a 100 grand slams are hit every season in baseball, but they’re still exciting every single time. Well, a great job here of staying within himself. You know that if you get a knock, you’re going to drive in a couple. So stay focused on that. Well, he does more than just a knock. Hits the grand slam to drive in four. Really good job at the plate. And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Jesus Lazardo won’t go any further. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. A change in the first. And here’s the new arm. Jose Alvarado. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Back to the top of the order now. Mike Ystreky up here. And that one is in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and one. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering is fouled back. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 7 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here in Philadelphia and today’s starter, Daniel Lynch. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Fires over to first and Bader is set down. And time now for the Phillies lineup. Sing they got their work cut out for them down a busload already in this one. And a manager does not want to see his hitters going to the plate swinging like it’s a home run derby. He wants hitters to put together quality at bats. Play the game that you’ve been playing and that you’ve been taught to play with this organization and go out there and move the line. If you do that, you’re going to score some runs. Maybe you don’t win this ball game, but at least you have some momentum to carry into the next one. Kyle Schwarver batting with one down takes a strike. sets him down looking. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Bill just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast right there and I don’t think he was taking it thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Bryce Harper stands in here, takes ball one low. Harper goes 6 feet 3 in 210 lbs. A former first round pick back in 2010. Next offering upstairs struck him out. He says, “I don’t care about draft rounds. Take a seat.” Three up, three down for Philadelphia. They continue to trail 7 nothing. Second inning set to go. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. That one ripped but foul. swing and a miss. That’s strike two. Assigned to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Boo. And something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky’s strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with, especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity. That’s to third and it stays fair. around first. Digging for two, throws to second, not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So, here’s the Royals DH Vinnie Pasquantino. He’s already homerred in this game. Get out of here, boys. And the first offering is not close. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the top of the second. swings and misses and the count one and two. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball on the ground to third. Throws across the diamond. One out in the second. Now batting third base Mike El Garcia. Here’s the third baseman Mikel Garcia. Singled and scored his first time. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Whit the runner at second with one away. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. One ball in the dirt. Blocked. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Salvador Perez steps in for the Royals. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. First pitch misses. A lot of pitchers have caught on to how good he is hitting the first pitch. Smart to avoid the zone right there. Foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. Phillies. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. That Kay is his third of the game. So one left for Kansas City and they hold a seven nothing lead. back here in Philadelphia. It’ll bring up JT Rail Mutotal Lynch back to work. That one in 95 missed up top and it’s one and0. just missed. Ripped to third and caught. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Nick Castanos at the plate now. First offering misses badly for ball one. One out. Base is empty. swinging a miss and the count even at one. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. line drive, base hit right field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Batting six, third base. Here’s the rookie third base. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Ground ball left side could be two to India at second for one. Over to Perez for the inning ending double play. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We play two full. It’s the Royals seven and the Phillies nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now the right fielder Jack Kaggle Leone City. Love coming to Citizens Bank Park. best ice cream in all of the league at the press level. It’s only been around since 2004, but plenty of awesome history here already. It’s the only stadium with multiple postseason no hitters. Remember Roy Hall did it back in 2010, and the Houston Astros threw a combined no in game four of the 2022 World Series. Phillies swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field. Castianos makes the grab. One away. Maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit. couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. Now at the plate, Jonathan India one for one with a single so far. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Swings through that. The next offering misses and the count is one and two. And a curve is down and in. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one misses and now three and two. Goes down looking. Two down. Base is empty. Now here is Kyle Isel. Fly to left his first time. That’s outside. One and0 comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Next offering is fouled back. Foul ball still a one and two count. Ground ball right side. It squirts through and that extends the inning. Now the catcher up to hit Luke Mey. He hit a grand slam his first time off out in front with the swing and that is strike one. Isbel leads off first with two down to the inning. And that one’s a little bit low. And the count even one and one inside just missed. Strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Headed down the line. Castanos moves on it, makes the catch, and that’ll do it. Royals leave one, but they’re still in control. It’s 7 nothing. Back here, Citizens Bank Park set for the bottom of the third and the batter will be the shortstop, Edmundo Sosa. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. and a base hit into right and the leadoff man aboard. Battielder, Brandon Marsh steps to the plate. Swing and a miss. Strike one and one. Popped up to the left into foul ground and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one away. batting ninth second base Wilson. So digging in Weston Wilson. Fast is outside. That’s in there. And it’s one and one. Just missed. Step off. Throw to first and he dives back in safely. In the air to left center is Bell in and to his right. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting center fielder Harrison Bader. And now Bader up to the plate. He’s hitting well here at Citizens Bank Park which is more of a hitter park. And that one upstairs. Ball one. And another ball. Fast ball in for a strike. And it’s two and one now. There’s a strike. Tapped out in front of the plate. Oh, great stop, but there’s no play for him. And that’s going to extend the inning. Up next for the Phillies. designated hitter. So, first and second with two outs. Kyle Schwarber stands in for the Phillies. There’s the strike. And it’s fouled away. Sosa the lead runner out at second. Bader on first with two down. Oh, great grab on the dive. And that’s a great play for the out. Great concentration to get that one started. He gets the force at second. Glove work at its finest. Now pitching. Welcome back. And now on the mound to start the fourth, Matt Stum. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So the Royals batting order turns over. Here comes Mikey to the plate. Bowl for two in this one. That one outside. Ball one. Stum, a 6’2 southpaw, 190 lbs. And he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in the state of North Dakota. And that’s in for a strike. Next offering is in for a strike. In the air to left down the line. Mars on the move. He’s got it. And there’s one away. Now that short stop, Bobby Wit Jr. Bobby Wit Jr. steps in for the Royals. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. First pitch just misses. right side and he can’t come up with it. Still fires to first and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Pascino. Two outs. Base is empty. And to the plate for Kansas City, Vinnie Pasquantino. He’s already homerred here in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next pitch is downstairs. The one-1 is fouled off. Way high. swings and misses. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. And we’re back. Here’s Bryce Harper. Bryce Harper. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order, second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. Hammered down the right side, but foul. That’s out to center field. Isbel on his way over. And there’s one down. Now batting catcher. And now it is JT Rio Muto 0 for one so far. In the air center field is belt has this one sized up. Two away. Up next for the Phillies, rightielder Nick. Two down, base is empty. Nick Castanos stands in for the Phillies and he’s already singled in this game. And a swing and a miss. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Now the third baseman. He’s 0 for one. Phillies. Pitch is in there. And that’s strike one. Castanos the runner at first with two gone. Come on now. Swing and a miss. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. And he’s registered. Three Ks in this one. One left for Philadelphia. Not going their way. It’s 7 nothing. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. Okay. Were we on script? Never. Boo. Growing up, who was your favorite big league mascot? The Philly fanatic. Still the best mascot. Is there a reason? Well, I love the Phillies and I loved Mike Schmidt. Michael Jack Schmidt. 548 home runs. He was my favorite. Well, some people say you and the Philly Fanatic kind of have some things in common. We have a similar body type. It’s true. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Phillies. That one almost got him. Let’s show them. Next pitch is outside. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping he’d get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. And next up for the Royals, Salvador Perez. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. just missed. We’ve got some superstitions up here in the booth and you never can say, “Hey, this game’s going really fast early in the ball game.” Yeah, that is one of the ways that we are capable of putting the jinx on the game is talking about how fast the game is going. That normally will grind it to a screeching halt. No question. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Marsh pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting number 14. Two outs. Base is empty. Digging in Jack Kaggle Leone. first offering and it just misses. Let’s go Phillies. Oh, that’s Phillies. Right through there for a strike. Swing and a foul out of play. Two down. Nobody on and it remains two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth. And taking over on the mound, Michael Laorenzan. and he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So, he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit per inning. And here is Sosa to the plate. A single his first time. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Activity in the Kansas City bullpen. Sam Long getting loose out there. to the right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Brandon March. And now Brandon March popped out and foul ground first time through. Let’s go. Pitch misses there. And that is ball one. Lorenzan, he’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever, but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days cuz he’s not out there racking up Ks. There’s the strike. I think it’s the deception in his ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat. They’re never able to get comfortable. When you only see him once, a lot of times he has success. Got to be clever, too, when you don’t have that lights out stuff. Right. Absolutely. You got to know what you’re able to do instead of focusing on what that hitter’s strength is. Stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top. Well, it’s just a great job of playing catch with the catcher. Exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the second baseman, Weston Wilson. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. and that is in for a strike. 0 and two. This guy’s not wasting any pitches. Hitters got to get into swing mode. This is a good time to expand the zone. Throw something maybe down in the dirt. On the ground to third. Sends it to Perez. Three up, three down. Inning over. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher, Tanner Banks. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. So, up now for Kansas City, Jonathan India. One for two. Jonathan India. line to left and that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he greetss the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Oh, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. He got a pitch he could get to out front, kept his bat through the ball, and didn’t pull off or roll his hands over. And that allowed him to rip that ball down the line for the double. So, a man aboard, Kyle Isbel steps in for the Royals. Ball one, no strikes. No outs. Runner on second. Come on. Activity in the bullpen. Orion Kirkering appears to be getting loose. Mesa also throwing and he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. Got him swinging. Luke Mey digs in now. He’s been a great free agent side. And that’s downstairs and it’s one and0. India the runner at second with one away. That’s in there. That’s strike one. late on that fast ball. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that one. Ran inside. Almost got him. Runner at second here. One gone. Stays alive. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now batting leftielder Mike. Now the left fielder Mike Ystreky 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. Runner at second. Two down. Popped up. Marsh running hard. Squeezes it. And that is that. bottom of the six and here is Harrison Bader. Laorenzan back to work. Edge of the zone. Call the strike. Going one. fought off. Foul missed with a change up. It’s a ball in two strikes. movement in the bullpen. Lucas Air, the young right-hander, up and throwing and a swing and a miss. Down on strikes now. One away. And he’ll be beating himself up on the way back to the dugout. Got a pitch to hit and just couldn’t get to it. I think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that one fouled off. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. You got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way, if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not goes down swinging for the strike out. Phillies have just one out remaining. No, anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning, got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction, table setters on the base paths, and all of a sudden you’re dealing with a number three hitter, any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie. And instead of it being a solo shot, it’s a two or three-run homer. Last chance for the Phillies. Here comes Bryce Harper. Ball one there. And a big swing and a miss. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. The one-1 is fouled off. One strike away. And that’s outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. Yeah, that’s too high. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Hammers that one. Curling down the line and foul. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each p. This one smoked out to left and that’ll do it. The Royals take this one in a blowout. Well, we saw complete domination in this one. The offense exploded for a blowout and then the pitching staff nails locked down the opponent. This team did everything right today. This one ends 7 nothing for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
