Michael Irvin once gave Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson a list of players that he wanted cut to maintain the highest of standards.

  1. Jon Gruden once said "In the old days, we'd practice in the afternoon two more times in pads. Nowadays, someone would be incarcerated for that."
Football was not entertainment. It was a fight for survival

  2. Jimmy Johnson was a great coach because he knew football inside and out! Johnson knew how to recruit average players and get the best out of them through his practice regimen just like boot camps all go no quit to earn a spot on his team the coach was brilliant in getting players to go beyond what their actual capabilities are to win championships…FACT🏈🔥💨

  3. My theory on the whole Jimmy Jerry feud is this. I BELIEVE…that "How bout them Cowboys" was something Jerry would say behind closed doors, and then Jimmy took his words AND the moment. How else does a billionaire always get what he wants? Hes petty and rich enough to be petty till hes in the ground. Thats my theory

  4. That's so freakin stupid about the asthma. Give 20 something year old Jimmy Johnson asthma and then make his ass get out and run like that and see what he does. He'd be on the ground too. I don't care how tough you are, there's nothing you can do if your body isn't getting air. And everyone in this comment section applauding him would be on the ground right behind them.

I guess talking about other people doing things that were tough makes some of these other folks feel tough too

  5. See, I don’t believe Jimmy Johnson was all that … He had some great players. The Herschel Walker trade was the key. And then signing Charles Haley took them over the top.

After he left, with the more relaxed approach of Barry Switzer, Dallas got to the NFC championship in 1994 (lost to SF) but then won another SB in 1995. So…

  6. Most of the players they traded for with the Vikings they cut and ended up with draft picks. They then used a lot of those picks on guys who had played for Jimmy Johnson in college

  7. Great coach, he could have done so much more in the Big D if Jerry would have just shut up. They might have won 1 superbowl with out him but it was the team me made and they haven’t been the same since

  8. What’s interesting is in today’s NFL this practice approach would result in the entire team getting season ending injuries before week 1. Now guys rarely ever wear pads and hit in practice. The quality of the NFL isn’t what it used to be. In the old days you worked a team harder and it made them better prepared for the season. Now the players are treated with kid gloves.

  9. Bill Bates was the only player left from the Tom Landry era that made Jimmy's cut. I remember seeing a video of Bates doing pull ups before practice and you can hear Jimmy say "Look at Bates. That's a self motivated player. If there's only one left, it'll be him."
