MLB Now | Steve Phillips marvels Jacob Misiorowski dazzles 8 K’s as Brewers complete sweep Pirates
I just seemingly got the wrong one. Mo back in the day. Andrew’s the guy who’s getting it done right now for Milwaukee. And the Miz, not the wrestler, but the pitcher getting it done on the mound. Bullet down the right field line. A fair ball. That’ll score two runs. Bowowers hustling for second base. He is in with a two-run double. And the Brewers strike first. Swinging a miss. He struck him out. climbed the ladder with 98 for his eighth strikeout of the afternoon. And Jacob Miserowski, gets through seven while retiring the last 13 that he faced. He got into a good rhythm of like we’re going to, you know, um benefit from me working quick, keep going. We’re up a bunch of runs. I can’t walk people. And he kind of got he found himself and uh really important because, you know, that’s that’s what it takes. Yeah, you heard uh Pat Murphy right there and talking about Ms.ki and Mizowski a great start yesterday. Um I think it’s going to come down to, you know, is this kid going to get an opportunity to start a postseason game, but if he does what he did yesterday, seven innings carving up the the Pirates, um he will get that opportunity. The impact is there. On the other side, Bubba Chandler, he really struggled yesterday. um just kind of lost that command and you can’t do that early specifically to the Brewers. They scored four in the first, one in the second, four again in the third inning. And Steve, when you have Mizarowski doing what he did, and Bryce Tank, who I feel like is leading the way for this team, especially with the uncertainty of Christian Yelich, he was the the player of the NL player of the the month in August. Um there there is a a pass the baton type of mentality for this Brewers team. They they scored 10 runs and they didn’t even hit a home run. It’s just constant relentlessness against starting pitching that they they just destroy a great game yesterday for the Brewers. Yeah, I think for Mizowski it’s going to be interesting to see, you know, and I love Pat Murphy talking about not the outcome but the things that he did that led to the outcome throwing strikes. And for Misowski, you know, for a young pitcher, there’s certain things you have to check off the box. Uh, and one of them is how do you pitch with a big lead? Not everybody can do it. And so, they had a lot of offense early, he gets the big lead. And that idea of attacking the zone, right? Throw strike one, get it over the plate. If they if they hit a solo home run, it’s not a big deal. But it’s not easy sometimes for young pitchers to do it because they look to think about putting up zeros all the time. So, check the box. He showed that he can do that. He’s such an intriguing guy and I think you’re right. I think the question about the playoff rotation for the Brewers, he’ll probably have three starts left, maybe four, but probably three. Uh, and the idea of if he has a good one, a bad one, and a mediocre one, then how do you look at him going in? Because what you’ve gotten from Canana, Jose Canana, and what you’ve gotten from Quinn Pster is predictability. When you give them the ball, you know what you’re going to get. They’re not going to throw shutouts, but they’ve got a chance to get you to the fifth and sixth inning with a lead, with a, you know, with a real chance to win the game. That predictability. On the other side, Misarowski gives you impact. He gives you the potential to just shut down the opposition and maybe even put him into a slump. He could be that overpowering, but he could also throw a clunker, which could lead you to get into the bullpen and burn your bullpen, which could affect the next game in a playoff series. It’s going to be an interesting decision for the Brewers as to which way they go with it. How do you see it? Yeah, I I look at Miserowski’s got like a three start test to give Pat Murphy the idea of whether or not he deserves to be in this rotation. And if he gives me a couple two out of three quality starts and he’s getting swing and miss and he’s locating his stuff, I want him starting a postseason game. Um, I almost rather have him start the postseason game and if he doesn’t look like himself or if I can use him two times through the order and piggy back and bring in somebody else, that might have just as much impact as as starting somebody else, a Quinn Priest or or a Canana. So, give me that impact off the jump. Let me see if this kid can bring that same energy that we typically see him bring out to a postseason game and really dial it up. That’s what I want to see, Steve. Yeah, it’s interesting. Uh people who are colorb blind can’t see differentiate red and green and yet red and green was all that the Mets were seeing yesterday in their matchup in Cincinnati. Got him looking at the knees. Strike out for throat on the fast ball. Seven strike out of the day. Honestly, probably just taking the mound for the first time in a big uniform um for the Mets, knowing that I have guys behind me there support me and then knowing I got my family in the stands cheering for me and then getting to see them. And Ellie rockets this one into the right center field gap. That’s going to bounce and go all the way to the wall. Marte on his way to third. He’s being waved around. Relay throw to the plate. Not in time. Ellie’s going to third. He’ll make it easily as the ball rolls by Alvarez. They’re not asking for anybody. Feel sorry for them. They just they really care. They’re, you know, they’re they’re a really good group of guys. And sometimes the game doesn’t end the way we wanted to. And we’ve been through a really tough stretch, but like you said, we’re still alive. Like until they make you go home, man, keep playing. Still alive. Terry Francona mentioning about his team who had some really good at bats in that sixth inning. um including an Ellie de la Cruz double that kind of helped this team propel to to victory. Also, I look at Hunter Green was phenomenal yesterday. The seven innings, 12 strikeouts, just dominance with that fast ball. But it’s the it’s the secondary stuff that that I love too, right? Being able to locate it and doing it with two strikes, overpowering guys, the velocity um just continues to carry throughout the course of the game. He doesn’t lose it. if anything, he gets stronger. Um, so a good win for the Reds. On the other side, Brandon Sprro makes his major league debut and really special. Took his no hit bid into the sixth inning. Um, it the fact that you have now him, Jonah Tong, uh, Mlan now in this rotation that gives you so many options if you’re Carlos Mendoza, especially with Kodi Sena still trying to figure some things out. These are three young guns that not only will be effective in the future in this rotation, but they may be counted on to have some big starts going into this postseason here for the Mets. Yeah, boy. Hunter Green 346 pitches thrown this year at 100 miles per hour or faster. I mean, think about that. Like, and his stuff in the seventh inning is like it is in the first inning, just absolutely electric. uh and and I love his competitiveness on the mound as well. Now for Brandon Sprro, love to see that story uh for the Mets, you know, and again, first outings, I never really know what to put on those for anybody, but it is a good sign that they’ve got a big three moving forward uh around which to continue to build and develop a pitching staff. And remember, they have to develop the pitching staff. Like we talked about Misarowski in in in Milwaukee, they have to do that, too. with these young pitchers for the Mets, they’re going to have to experience everything. They will have a bad outing at some point. How do you bounce back from that bad outing? Uh you’re going to have a big lead at some point. How do you pitch with that big lead? They’ve got a lot to show and how to learn at the big league level, but certainly the stuff is there uh for that staff. And uh uh for the Mets though, um you know, another loss in trying to hold on. Four games now up on Cincinnati and on the San Francisco Giants uh and trying to hold on to that third wild card spot. All right, we were on third, head home with a home run and it’s Yankees Blue Jays uh yesterday and this was playoff baseball over the course of the weekend. Max Freed on the mound for the Yankees. Max Scherzer on the mound uh for the the Blue Jays. A battle of the Maxes and Aaron Judge got a lot of work in the outfield yesterday uh trying to make some big plays, but the offense Ben Rice coming through in the clutch for the Yanks. beat to the gap right center field. It is gone. Line drive home run Ben Rice. It’s three nothing Yankees at the get-go here at the stadium. Drilled to the gap. Right center field. Going back. Going back. It’s off the wall. Judge coming around third. Scores easily. Pop up tied at second. Cody Bellinger. He rings the bell again. It’s 4-3 and an RBI by Cody here in the third inning. Yankees on top. you know, obviously the team we’re chasing. Uh so to, you know, win two out of three after dropping the first game, you know, getting in late, um you know, definitely a good series for us into an off day and uh you know, and we got to turn the page. We got another good team coming in and it’s on to the next one. I feel like we have a chance to be a really, really excellent club. And the one thing I know is we’re pretty healthy. I feel like we have a lot of guys that are in a good place and we are in a position to go get it now. We got to go do it. That’s Aaron Boone postgame as the Yankees take two out of three from the uh Blue Jays. And couple things stick out to me, Steve. Ben Rice is at bat in the first inning against Sherzer. Sherzer trying to pound him inside with that fast ball. Um using some off speed as well, mixing it. 10 pitch battle. And Judge is actually on second base. He he’s got the sign like kind of picking the signs up. Um giving them to uh giving them to Ben Rice, relaying them. Um Ben Rice is able to get to a fast ball on that 10th pitch and drives it out to right center for the three-run blast early. That helps the Yankees. Um Max Freed settled in big time after the third inning jam that he was in. Runner on second and third, no outs. Is able to get out of that jam and he continues getting stronger throughout the course of this game. started getting some quick outs, started being able to command his stuff better in the zone. Um, and really dominated the rest of the way through. I I I think what you mentioned about Judge, he was tested in right field. Keep an eye on that arm and how many throws he has to make. But a nice job of the Yankees bullpen being able to lock this one up after Freed left Yankees uh pull the series, pull it out of the series. Yeah, Max Freed 1.67 670 RA over his last four starts. And for a Judge, walked twice yesterday and scored twice yesterday. Stole a base, put himself in scoring position before the uh the double by Bellinger. And then uh as as Xavier talked about, he was on second base with a Ben Rice home run. Now that 10 pitch at bat, Rice was so locked in. He was hitting the ball hard, but he was hitting it hard because he knew what was coming. He knew what pitch was coming because uh Max Scherzer and Sherzer talked about it and addressed it after the game. We say, “This is something I thought I had fixed, but I realized they were picking up my change up.” Uh, that in fact was Sher the way he holds his glove. The runner on first base can see his grip on the change up. And the way that it worked was Cody Bellinger was on first, relaying to Aaron Judge on second what pitch was coming. And Aaron Judge was then signaling to Ben Rice at home plate that he was going to get the change up. And now Aaron Judge was not the most subtle in the way that he related it. He went full crane mode from Danielson from from Karate Kid where he sort of went with the crane with his arms out extended like that and Judge signaling in what pitch was coming and Rice sitting on it. Now before Rice hit the home run, he pulled one fouled down the line cuz he was all over the change up but had to wait a little bit longer. And look, it wasn’t a great pitch either by Sherer. It floated a little bit. Uh but that a big difference in the game. Devin Williams came in in the eighth inning, put a couple runners on and it got dicey. Like I was like, “Oh boy.” Like this is I was at the game yesterday uh watching and was could feel the tension in the stadium, you know, and and for poor Devin Williams, anything short of a perfect one, two, three, and an immaculate inning, you know, three strikeouts in nine, he gets something someone’s going to boo. They throws ball one, they’re going to boo. Uh Bednar ends up getting it done as well. I think probably the most egregious thing though at Yankee Stadium yesterday was on my visit to Yankee Stadium, I did go into to visit with Brian Kman in his box. Got a chance to see Brian Sabian there. Uh former Giants general manager. Got a chance to see Omar Maniah, my former assistant. Both of who are special assistants for Brian Cashman.
