🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals VS Milwaukee Brewers / September 13/MLB THE SHOW 25

MLB show has action out of the NL Central. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. John Shami and Chris Singleton on the call. Singing today of course will be treated to the sausage race and some really good baseball. Yeah, these fans love their Brewers and I love the way they run the show here in Milwaukee. I mean, the fans are into it. They bring it just about every home game and there’s a lot of fun tradition carried on in this ballpark as you mentioned. First pitch coming at you right after the break. So just about set now. And on the mound today, Freddy Peralta and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. And most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. A sliding stop to first and very nicely done for the out. Here’s a Cardinals lineup. Now, this group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start. Score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games, which no one wants to be a part of. Ivon Herrera now in the box comes up empty with a swing there. And that’s downstairs and outside. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Clearly, he was geared up for the fast ball right there. maybe got a little jumpy and excited out of the hand, but he certainly didn’t miss a stitch. Swinging a ground ball now. A jump throw on the money. Nice play. Batting third, leftielder Alec Berles. Two down, base is empty. Now the left fielder, Alec Burlson. Ball one there. That pitch in for a strike and it’s one and one. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on way out front for strike two. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in B. And he got him. Strike three. And that’ll retire the side. It’s the Cardinals nothing and the Brewers coming to bat. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here with my pal Singi, today’s starting pitcher, Michael McGrevy. How about a scouting report on him? Well, that whip is just below the league average. And that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. We go to the bottom of the first. Up now for Milwaukee, Bryce Terraang. That catches the corner. They had a foul ball. He caught it behind his back over to first and they get the out. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. And an important bat for them, batting fifth in this one. S Freelick. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy, you know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice. Man, this guy’s always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. Jackson Chorio in now takes ball one off the plate. McGrevy, he has a reputation, I don’t know, maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in. You know, you like that in a relief pitcher, but when you have it for a starting pitcher, a guy that can get out of a tight spot, that is pretty valuable. And you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble. This guy’s earned a longer leash. And because of that, confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there, they know he’ll find his way through it. Here’s Yelich at the dish and he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. How much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach. I think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus, slow everything down, stay right in that moment, pitch to pitch, execution, and focusing on that catcher’s mid. Chio stands at first with one out and he chases that one. Two down. Batt now here’s Jake Bowers. Jake Bowers pitch misses. One and0. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Next offering in there for a strike. Now one and two. Swing and a miss for the strikeout. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. Milwaukee leaves one scoreless after one. Back here in Milwaukee. New inning getting started. Wilson Contrarus now up to the plate. Peralta back to work. Line drive base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. batting fifth third baseman Nolan Gorman. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Let’s go. And that one fouled off. No score here in the second. Come on, let’s get ground ball left side and it goes just foul in the dirt. Ruer at first with no outs here. Strike him out. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swaying and a highf fly ball in the air left field. Yell hauls it in for the out. One down. Batting six. Short stop Thomas to Jay-Z. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay-Z. [Music] That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. Just missed. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] Now move to first. Contraras back in on a dive. Nope. All three man at first. One away. Swing and a popup. Makes the catch. And there’s two down. Well, that was a pitch you got to crush. Unbelievable that he missed it right there. And I’m telling you, he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat. Now, the catcher up to hit, Pedro Pah. [Music] And that’s outside. Top of the zone for a called strike. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the top of the second. Brewers. Rip towards third. They take the force out. And that is the inning. The Cards leave one. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at American Family Field, bottom half of inning number two. And stepping in is the speedy Selick. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Ripped on the ground to second. whips it to first and a quick out number one. Third base, Caleb Durban. Here’s the rookie third baseman. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting and that one hammered headed one hops the wall round second. digging for third. The relay throw in there safely. He quickly went from hitter to base runner. Love when guys make that transition and he’s got speed to put on a show. [Applause] One down, runner at third. Blake Perkins up now for the Brewers. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Check swing and he went strike one. Let’s go. And that clips the inside corner and a foul ball. He stays alive. Just missing there. And the count is one and two. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. One away with a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. [Applause] Hit on the ground to short. Oh, he gloves it. safe and they take the lead. Boo, that’s a frustrating way to fall behind in this one as the infield single drives in the run. And sometimes all you have to do is put the ball in play and you give your teammate a chance to hurry home. [Applause] Ballots chance into throw over to first. Need a big hit here. And that’s way high. Ball one. Inside corner and that’s called a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. on the ground to the left. Gorman jump throw. Nicely done for the out. Batting night. The shorts stop. Joseph Ortiz. My goodness, Chris. He had to generate a ton of power in that jump throw for the out. Let’s take another look and dive into the numbers from Stackcast. Man, that’s an impressive throw right there in the air all the way from third base. You’ve got to have a powerful arm to play third base, but he just showed he’s got more than enough. He’s got to can it. Next for Milwaukee, Joseph Ortiz. That’s in there. And one. Come on. There’s a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. And a swing and a miss. Inning over and it could have been worse. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Brewers one and the Cardinals nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Now up for St. Louis. Jose Fmine. Fairmine goes 5’9 in 25 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So, off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball. Sets him down on strikes. Fast ball at the letters frozen for strike three. Well, I think that’s a case of overthinking right there. You got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back. Nathan Church stands in now and watches strike one. One out. Base is empty. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Next offering is down low. [Music] Good job to fight that one off. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. In the dirt. Two and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall and that’s a two out double. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the play boo. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Herrera. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. headed towards the corner. Freighle running hard to get it. Grabs it on the run and that is that. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Brewers one and the Cardinals nothing. [Applause] Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the leadoff man for the Brewers, Bryce Terra. Nice terrain just missed. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Swinging a miss as that one was high. Yeah, I don’t think anyone’s got good numbers swinging at pitches in that location. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Kicks and fires. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Swang and a miss. struck him out. He’s notched four strikeouts now. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Next is the designated hitter, Jackson Chorio. Check swing and he went. That’s strike one. One down, base is empty. There’s a high chopper and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting left fielder Christian. Two outs. Space is empty. Yelli stepping into the box now. The MVP in 2018. the runner up in 2019. That’s in for a strike at 95. And it’s 0 and one. That’s in there. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Two down. Nobody on that misses. Now one and two. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And they’ll do it again. stays alive. Next offering upstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one is upstairs. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. That one blasted deep to right. Newbar drop step going back and that is gone. He sends it out of here. His 28th home run of the season. It’s two nothing. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Moo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Applause] He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. And here is Jake Bowers. [Music] This one in the air and he makes the catch and that’s the inning. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Alec Burlson. Brewers. Come on, Blue Crew. In the air, right side of the infield. Bowers calls it in and there’s one away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Get out of here. Contras in the box now. No balls in a strike. And that one misses up and in. One and one. Fast ball for a strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. A defensive swing right there. Some cheese on the inside part of the plate. Bet the hands are still stinging after that one. And that’s outside. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And down on strikes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, I think that was just a case of a hitter quitting on a pitch. He was looking fast ball and didn’t see it out of the hand and just left the bat on his shoulder. That was a change up right over the plate. Probably not the location he was looking for, but the change of speeds is what fooled him and he got the out. Gorman in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. There’s a swing and a drive. That one’s carrying. Out of here. He’ll circle to bases and they’re on the board. It’s 2-1. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. So two away with nobody on. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals. First pitch and he just misses. Two outs. Base is empty. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Now batting. Here’s the catcher to hit. Pedro Pah. [Music] inside and it’s one and0 Jay-Z off of first with two away and that’s through there for a strike and it’s one and one. Two outs. Bows it off. Still one and two. pickoff throw and he’s back in on a drive. Got him now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. Cards claw back a bit on the homer. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. Back after this on the show. ready to go. Bottom four now. S Freelick Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That catches the top part of the zone and it’s one and two. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end on the ground and that’s just foul 22 now. Line drive caught. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that they still drive you absolutely crazy. Here’s the third baseman. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Boo, this guy’s definitely a plus runner. But what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Two down, base is empty. Blake Perkins the next to hit. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. And that’s down. A base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting catcher Danny Danny Jansen to hit here. Grounded out his first time. Fast ball for a strike. Let’s go. Popped up to Jay-Z. And that is the third out of the inning. Brewers strand one. They lead it 2-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. And the batter now, Josemine. Jose. Peralta. Back to work. That missed by a lot. And that’s ball one. You know, these Cardinals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game. It’s in and out of his glove. Still manages to throw and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Fast groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. [Music] on the ground to short. Ortiz to first and a couple of quick outs. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals. One for two. And that’s off the inside edge. One and0. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. He swings and fouls one off. [Music] The one-1 is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Redbirds down quietly. And our score remains 2-1. Back here in Milwaukee, there’s the shorts stop at the plate. Joseph Ortiz Ortiz. That one finds the corner. It’s 0 and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Fouled off down the right side. And that one is lifted in the air. Are you kidding me? One up, one down. Now batting second base. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order. This is Bryce Terra. Go for two in this one. This one smoked could be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So now here’s the DH. Jackson Chorio [Music] Chorio checks his swing. Now it appeal to first and that’s going to be ruled a swing. Come on. Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third. That’s in for a strike and the throw out at third. Not close with that one. Going to count one and two. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Sunny Gray preparing to come on if needed. Palante also getting ready. Two outs. Hit on the ground to short and a base hit. [Applause] back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. And now they’ve got some speed on first, so we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. McGrevy keeping an eye on him. Do it again. Now it’s Christian Yelich. First pitch just misses. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. Still able to get it there in time. And they do get the out. Milwaukee leaves one as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. Top of the sixth inning. Now it’s the DH. Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera. Herrera goes 5′ 11 in. 24 years old and he was born in Panama. And that is out of play. You got this Milwaukee. Next offering is in for a strike. Swinging a miss. That one in the dirt and it beats him for the first out after the drop. Third strike. Well, he’s been racking up the strikeouts and what’s so impressive, not walking anyone. I mean, this guy’s just going right after hitters, filling up the strike zone, and it looks like hitters, they’re trying to think with him, but they just are a pitch behind. Dominating stuff out there on the mound. Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] The Brewers up by a run and we’re the top half of the sixth. to the right side. Terra slings to first in time well on the mound very efficient able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. Here comes Wilson Contrarus. Let’s do this Brewers. Let’s go Brewers. And that one upstairs. Ball one. You know, this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much. Everybody needs to just take a deep breath, relax, and let it naturally happen. Two down. Nobody on. Swang and a high-fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance. It has the distance. Gone. His 21st of the year and this game is tied. It’s 2-2. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Now the third baseman Nolan Gorman center field. Perkins has a beat on it and makes the play and that’s out number three. One for the Cardinals on the solo home run and we’re deadlock now at two a piece. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom of the six and now the first baseman Jake Bowers. in for a strike. 0 and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Sunny Gray appears to be getting loose. [Music] Foul ball there. That misses the zone and the count one and two and there’s a ball. That one misses and it’s three and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout. And he’ll make a move to the pen. Michael McGrevy done for the night. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunonny Gray. On for the 30th time this year. Sal Freelick will hit next. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Right down to shoot. And that is strike one. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. Swings and pulls it foul to the right side. Milwaukee. That one hit to right. Nuke Bar moves under it and there’s one down. Now batting third baseman Caleb. Here’s the third baseman. Close but called a ball. Ball one. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Not even close there. Down two and 0. That one missed. Way to lay off that pitch down. Blake Perkins in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] and ball four to a board. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Blake. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Blake Perkins. [Applause] The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot with the go-ahead run standing at second here in the bottom of the six. And there’s the strike. Let’s go. That was the sweeper, but it missed. [Applause] And a good eye there. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Danny Jansen in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] And that’ll load the bases. Pretty good spot on the outside, but just couldn’t quite clip the zone. That’s a stone cold take. So bases all loaded up and now the catcher comes up to him. Danny Jansen golden opportunity right here. Fast ball in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Let’s go. Let’s go. Edge of the zone for a strike. 0 and two now. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. That misses the zone and that is ball one. They tried to get him to go. Chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field. That’s got a chance and it bangs off the wall. One runs in to the plate and he’s out. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. Made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. [Applause] Joseph Ortiz now at the plate out to short to Jay-Z onto third. Save. A run comes in on the play. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Next for the Brewers, Bryce Terang one for three. That one way outside and that’s ball one. Corners are occupied with two down. [Music] Smash to the left side. They get the force and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over, but two runs for them and they jump ahead. We’re through six full. It’s the Brewers four and the Cardinals two. And we’re back. Top of inning number seven. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay. Here we go. Here we go. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. Movement in Milwaukee’s bullpen. Aaron Ashby, the southpaw, is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Miserowski, the right-hander, loosening up as well. Off the mark there. And the count even one and one. The shorts stop takes a ball. right through there for a strike. Hard hit right side. Bowers takes it to the bag and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. Milwaukee. Pah in the box again takes a strike. The Red Birds trailing by two here in the top half of inning number seven. CIA strikes him out for the second time today. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was up. It was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder. But then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can’t make contact. Vermine in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. Two outs. That one ripped left field. Yelich ranging back onto the track and he makes the catch. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Brewers four and a Cardinals two. Back here at American Family Field. Bottom of the seventh. Here’s the Brewers DH. Jackson Chio and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, these Brewers doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game, and the numbers back that up. Despite having nine hits in the game, the numbers don’t exactly jump off the page in terms of exit velocity. Nearly half have been traveling less than 90 mph off the bat, but they’re finding a way to get it done. This one could be trouble around first, heading for two. And it’s a double, making him three for four on the day. having himself a really nice game at the plate. Anytime you can drive a ball into the gap the other way, it feels so good. And that’s when you know you’re right where you need to be at the plate. It’s even better when it gets you extra bases. Got to love looking in at your dugout and seeing your teammates fired up. Up next for the Brewers, left fielder Christian Yellish. Come on Brewer. outside. [Applause] Rips that one to right. He’s got it. Runner tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. Now batting first baseman Jake Bowers. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jake Bowers. This is all about situational hitting. It’s crucial in this spot. Do whatever it takes to put the ball in play and hopefully you find a gap in the defense. That one to first play at the plate. Got him. Now batting right. I think he could have had a better read than that. with the infield back and a ball on the ground. You’re expected to score if you’re going to go to get thrown out at home plate. That’s probably a bad jump by the base runner, but an excellent play on defense. And now the right fielder Selick 0 for three in this one. Sunny Gray checks on the runner. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Let’s go Brewers. Swung on. Belted. That’s back. and gone. He hammers one out to right. His 11th of the year. And they add a pair. It’s 62. [Applause] So, Singy, this is a little bit of a surprise. is a guy known for line drives. Hits going over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball. Get out of the ballpark. For him, it’s kind of a mistake, but you know what? When you have such a good approach every now and then, you’re going to run into one. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout, and he’ll make a move to the pan. Sunonny Gray will depart. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Oh yeah, baby. New arm of the mound for the Cardinals. Andre Palante coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. So two down now to third baseman. Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Base is empty. Two away, but two runs are in here. The bottom of the seventh. And that drops in for a strike on the ground to third. Gorman throws on to first and that is that. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 62. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Rob Zastrrisznney. He’s been so good against lefties for the Brewers. Number 58. Rob at the plate. Nathan Church. The Cardinals in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. fought off foul. That’s off the inside corner and it’s a ball to strike. Activity in the bullpen. Quinn Pster appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. [Music] And that’s a strike. Battling here as he fouls it away. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming winer. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. [Music] Caught him looking for the K. Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there. That was a tough battle, man. So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that, it’s got to feel good out there on the mound. That was a fun at bat to watch. Lars Nbar digs in now and that one cutting but missing down low. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen, you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah, and that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. Throw over to Bowowers. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Two out, space is empty. Now a chance for Ivon Herrera. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. Swing and a ball hammered left field. That’s back. That one is gone. An absolute smash to left and they close the gap. It’s 63. Wasn’t fooled on the first pitch at all. He squared it up right away. Oh, that one got in the jetream on a line drive. We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually bad news. And all of a sudden, they’re back in this ball game. Now, here is Alec Burlson. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Foul ball. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. Two down. Nobody on. [Applause] 3-2 now. Started after it, appealed to third. Did not go. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. So, they bring on their closer in the eighth, Abner Orbe, and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically, at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. [Applause] We’re under at first with two away. Here’s Contraras now. He’s already homered in this game. Here come the rally caps. It’s late, but it’s far from over. And first offering is fouled off. [Applause] up the middle. They take the force out. Out number three. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. And they’ve doubled up now. It’s 63. Major League Baseball is on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the eighth. Up now for Milwaukee. Blake Perkins. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Ryan Fernandez up and throwing. swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. His fourth home run of the season. And they add on. It’s 73. A little more breathing room is always a good thing in baseball. And now they have it. [Applause] High velocity up and in is just such a difficult location for the hitter. But this time he pulls the hands tight to the body, gets through this pitch. What conviction in that swing. Awesome job at the plate. Danny Jansen up now for the Brewers. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. Pitch is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, you just got to delay it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. That’s towards center. Church settles underneath it. Pulls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Brewers, the short stop. Now it’s the shortstop, Joseph Ortiz. Check swing called strike. There’s the strike up high and the count is 0 and two. Swing in a high-fly ball right field. Nbar pulls that one down. Two away now. Now batting second base. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the second baseman, Bryce Terang. One for four with a double. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Pitch misses there and that’s ball one. That clips the corner. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Oh, Jackson Chorio up next for the Brewers. That one ripped and it hits the fence around first and hustling for second. And he’s got his second double of the game. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. [Applause] So runner at second, two down. Next for Milwaukee, Jackson Chorio ripped to short gets it to first. They limit the damage here. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. Last chance coming up here for the Cards. Back here in Milwaukee, we go to the ninth. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Gorman. And first offering is fouled off and it’s through for a hit. Had a good start to the inning. Now batting short stop Thomas to Jay-Z. And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Sajay-Z inside and it’s one and0. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Gorman gets his lead at first with nobody out. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. The shorts stop takes a ball. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Nobody out. Runner at first. In the air, left field. Yell on the move and in foul ground. He pulls it down. One out. Outstanding catch right there. And I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close, but was determined to make that catch. And a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. [Applause] Pahes batting with one down. Takes a strike. Not sure exactly what he was thinking there. Good sinker ball pitcher. Goes with the fast ball in a double play situation when he needs something on the ground. Had a breaking ball misses outside. dives, but it kicks off his glove. The throw is still in time and they get it out on the play. Just a great effort all the way around at third base right there. Nice job to get a glove on it with the dive, but it was the recovery that was so impressive. If he doesn’t hop to his feet and get the throw off in such a fluid motion over there, I kind of doubt he gets the out. So they’re down to their final out. Jose Fmine next up for the Cardinals. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. That pitch gets the inside corner. That’s strike one. Slider misses outside. They’re down to their final strike. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. [Applause] Aribe is just one strike away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that is the ball game. The number 90 is a big number. You’re talking 90 wins over the course of a big league season. Extremely impressive. These players have worked hard all year long and they’re seeing the fruits of their labor. It’s not over yet though. 73 is how this one ends. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
