BREAKING: Philadelphia Flyers Trade Goalie Ivan Fedotov to Columbus Blue Jackets | PHLY Flyers
Yeah. Heat. Hey everybody, how you doing? Well, that’s good. Welcome to PHLY Flyers Emergency Pod Live in the Xfinity Mobile studio. My name is Bill Matz. I’m your director of fun and games for the afternoon. Joining me, I guess this morning, I guess it’s still all right. And joining me this morning, it is Philly’s number one hockey beat writer, Charlie O’ Conor. And uh we’ve got a little bit of news, Chuck. Ivan Fedottov traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. So Philadelphia has once again traded a Russian goalender with minimal NHL experience to Columbus. Let’s see how it works out. Yeah, that was one of the first people in my mention saying the the Bob Ross the obvious Bob Rosski joke. There is obviously a big difference between tra trading a goalie with a ton of potential who is 23 going on 24 versus trading a goalie who is 28 going on 29 who already has a large cap hit and who has not really shown much of anything at the NHL level. Uh he has had a couple good games here and there but Ivan Fidotov I do not think is going to magically turn into an all-star Vzna level goalie in Columbus the way Sergey Barski did. Seems unlikely. I would be shocked. Uh the return kind of says the same thing. It’s Ivan Fedotav to Columbus. No salary retention, which might be the key of this. The Flyers get a 2026 sixth round pick in return. And really, it just feels like Danny Brier woke up this morning and decided, you know what, I don’t want to have to juggle this five goalie between the Phantoms and Flyers situation like I did last year. Let’s make it an even four so we have two at both levels. And that’s what he did. We now have presumably Sam Erison and Dan Var in the NHL. Carson Bjornes and Alexi Kolasav in the AHL. And that was my main my first thing when I saw this. You and Brenna were texting and I said, “I’m awake. Let’s do it. Come on. I’m I’m actually I’m cognizant of what’s happening.” Um I’m an adult. Uh my reaction was Alexi Kolasav is coming. Huh? That’s a little surprising. Well, Alexi Kolasovv is already here. He is practicing on the ice in Vorhees with his teammates. Obviously, a big change from where he was at last year where he was still hanging out in Barus at this point and there was serious uh consternation as to whether he was ever going to show up to camp. He did not show up for the start of camp, did not show up for rookie camp. did come to camp a bit late and get on the ice and I believe he did get into one preseason game. Got one. Yeah. Before the end, but it does seem like he is more invested in being in the Philadelphia Flyers organization this year. I don’t think they would have made this trade had they had any concerns that Kolov was not invested. That is one of the primary takeaways is that if you’re going to trade Fedo, it tells me that Alexi Kolasov is on board, at least for now, with the idea of playing in the AHL. And that tracks with the things I have been hearing over the last month or so that yes, he’s coming to camp. Oh, there’s no no concern. There’s no wishy-washiness. No, he’ll be at camp. Okay. Well, if he’s coming to camp, then presumably he’s coming to camp with the knowledge that he’s probably not going to be in the NHL because the Flyers have Sam Harrison, they have Dan Liddar, who they signed this summer. There’s no obvious spot for him. It seems like this trade because had they not made this trade, Fedo would have been one of the two projected goalies in the AHL alongside Carson Bjarnes. You move Fedotov out, now it’s pretty clear your two AHL goalies are projected to be Carson Bjnison, one of their top prospects. And Alexi Kolaf, another one of, and I know we had this conversation when we were discussing the top 20 list, and you were like, I’m shocked Kolosov is even on the list. Alexi Kolaf is one of the Flyers top goalie prospects. It makes sense that he would be in the AHL battling for time with another one of their top goalie prospects. Yeah. No, I just uh I am I am shocked this is the way things went. I said for a couple of weeks like, “Yeah, I think the way it sounds is they’re expecting Kolasab to show up and the reason they’re expecting that is because there’s going to be a good faith. Hey, you show up, we’ll send you somewhere where the situation is where you want to be.” And now, you know, because we were joking, you know, if you didn’t like Allentown, wait till you get a load already. uh because of what the situation was and how they really really don’t want to deal with three goalies at any level because it’s just a pain in the ass. Practicing is hard, not dressing a guy is hard. It just kind of throws a monkey wrench in your whole plan. And now here we are. The uh the surprising move is made to trade not Kolasav but Fedotav. And Fedotav got his shot in the NHL last year. um came over from Russia a couple of years ago, got his cup of coffee and honestly in that first game when he came in in relief looked okay. Um it was the goalie situation was dire. He got a a full season last year. It didn’t go well. We expected his salary to be buried in the AHL this year. Uh instead it is someone else’s problem. Ivan Fedotav is is a Columbus Blue Jacket now. And there’s a little bit of clarity. Yeah, I think, you know, we didn’t really talk about the trade yet necessarily, but I I think Danny Brier deserves a pat on the back for the Steel. It’s a good trade for the Flyers. Look, I’m not saying a sixth round pick is is earthshattering. It’s not an earth shaking return. It’s not going to change the franchise, but it’s worth remembering that Ivan Fidotov was really bad. Like, was not a good NHL goalie. Objectively speaking, this was one of the worst NHL goalies. Yes, league by the numbers he put up in 26 games put up an 880 save percentage of 315 goals against average. I don’t have his advanced metrics handy. They weren’t good. Bad. I’m going to guess bad. A lot of red, not a ton of blue. Exactly. They were bad. And this is not a goalie on a cheap cap hit. This is a goalie who is who cost some money. So, for the Flyers to get out from under this deal to trade away the entirety of Fidotovs, I believe it was a um 3.125 capit. I believe that was his capit. I think that sounds right. Something like that. It’s it’s it’s above three. And not have to retain any salary and to get anything back for him. Not even look, six round pick isn’t that important, but the Flyers didn’t have to give up a pick to get rid of him. They didn’t have to attach a fifth round pick or a sixth round pick of their own. They got back some kind of value for this guy who was one of the worst goalies in the league who is on a contract that pays him more than what he’s worth to be sure. And he doesn’t even bring the promise of youth. He’s in his late 20s. He’s going to turn 29 in the next uh a couple months, I believe. I think it was is he October birthday? I think he’s in November. Uh I’m bringing up next next couple months. Yes. Um, yeah, but it was 3.2 3.275. 275. Okay. Yeah. And I thought you were also when you said it’s worth remembering like it was a decade ago, but it’s also worth remembering Ivan Fedo himself, seventh round pick, so you moved that salary and all right, it took a decade worth of investment, but you moved up around. So that’s something. Yeah. Yeah. Three 3.275. You’re right. That is that is the cap hit. Um, which is insane when you think about it. Yeah. Well, the Flyers obviously gave him more than what he should have gotten because that was how they were going to get him over here in retrospect. Now, we can look at it. Look, the Fedo signing was we can look back and say it was a mistake. He did not perform well for the Flyers. He contributed to the team’s awful goalending situation last year to be sure, but now we can look back with the benefit of hindsight and say, you know what, they gave the guy a shot. He was a seventh round pick. They wanted to see what he was because they they did draft him. He was part of the organization through no fault of his own. He was not allowed to come over when he was supposed to come over. They got him over here for a year. Got to see where he was and then boom. Now they traded him away and they got something back for him that was a higher pick than the pick they used on him. Yeah. And um it was worth a shot. Like like Keith Jones said in the uh press conference last week, listen, it’s never a mistake to give an opportunity to players you drafted. Um, you might not like the answer. Like we say all the time, they’re getting answers to questions. The answer to this question was, “Oh, he’s not very good.” And they decided to move on. They’re not going to waste AHL development time that could go to, you know, a young guy like Alexi Kolav or Carson Bjarn on someone who’s almost 29 years old. Yeah. This it just makes a ton of sense. And it has the benefit of also clearing some cap room. Yes. Yes. The Flyers, while they would have been under the cap and they could have been under the cap for this season, even without putting Ryan Ellis on long-term major reserve, which has always been an option, they could always do that. They don’t want to. They want to be under the cap even with his full uh $6.25 million cap because they don’t want to run into issues with their bonuses where bonuses would carry over for the next season. Now, if you’re looking at their cap situation, um I have a sheet that I that I put together that that gives me an idea of where they’re at. I have them, I believe, removing the Fedotov cap hit. That would have been because even if they would have sent him to the AHL, they still would have been on the hook for a little over $2 million because you you get to you get some cap relief if you send a guy to the miners. A little over a million, I believe. Like a mill. Yeah, it’s like a mill. Um minimum, basically. I don’t have all the numbers in front of me. It’s 10:30 a.m. on a on a Sunday. So, I don’t have everything on a Sunday morning. On a sun. never on no Sunday. But I have their cap situation now with guys like Alex Bump, Rodrigo Gobles on the roster. So they have a full roster. I have their cap situation uh a little over 3.5 million under the cap. So now they have flexibility. This gives them that flexibility where they don’t have to worry about like how are we going to call this guy up? What if we have to make a trade? Now they have some cap cap flexibility for this year. That helps. That’s why this is a good trade. It’s a good trade because this was a guy who almost certainly wasn’t going to make the NHL roster, was contributing to a log jam in the organizational goalending pipeline at the pro level because you have five goalies for four spots if all these guys are going to get playing time in either the NHL or the AHL and you didn’t have to retain salary and you got a pick back. Not a high pick, but you got something back. Something. Yeah. Um, who’s the first goalie up now? It’s got to be Kolav. just like it’s funny that okay is Fido any good? No. But at least he’s like 29 and if he gets shelled, we’re not losing anything developmentally. Like we’re just it is what it is when we have to call up our third goalie. Now it’s it’s one of your prospects you’re going to have to expose to the NHL unless you pick someone up off waiverss. Well, I would have to imagine that the idea of NHL time has probably been part of the conversations they’ve had with Kolasov because look, if you’re convincing Kolas to spend significant time in the AHL, you had to have conversations with him, with his camp to make sure that everyone’s on the same page. I’m sure that one of the conversations was, look, we’re going to find a way out of the Fedtov deal. He’s not going to be in the mix. It’s going to be you and Bejarn in the AHL. you’re going to get a lot of time down there, but we don’t want Bejorn playing in the NHL this season unless he’s blowing the doors off. So, you are functionally our third goalie. And look at last season. The third goalie plays a lot in the NHL because guys get hurt. The third goalie, there’s a good chance you’re going to get, you know, between 10 and 20 games anyway. So, just, you know, be the good soldier, play a role down in the AHL, and you’re gonna get NHL time even if you’re not up there the entire year. I bet that was part of the pitch to Kolasov. So, I don’t think this is going to then be resolved by them going out and getting somebody new to give them a little bit more confidence in their third goalie. I think they’re okay with Kasal being the third goalie. In fact, I suspect they promised him he’s going to be their third goalie. That would make a ton of sense. Um, now with the Cap situation and the Flyers making a somewhat surprising roster move, I guess it’s not shocking. I thought they were going to trade one of their really bad rushing goalies. It just happened to be the old one, not the young one. But because it’s the one who was eating up significant cap space, people are wondering if this is setting up for another move. Um, what can you tell me about that, Chuck? I do not think this is setting them up for another move. I think this is a move that makes perfect sense in its own self-contained universe. They had five goalies for four spots. Now they have four goalies for four spots. Great. I heard some people on social media wondering what does this mean for Carter Hart? I do not think this means anything for Carter Hart. Um I had already heard over the last few weeks that a Flyers Carter Hart reunion was unlikely because I didn’t think the Flyers were going to be interested. That said, we got a report from Chris Johnson of the Athletic on Friday night. This look, I don’t know whose people who people’s sources are. I obviously am not calling up Chris Johnson being like, “So, who told you this?” But the way that report was written, it sounds like based on the presentation that it was coming straight from Hart’s camp, probably his agent. And in that report, Johnson says that it doesn’t seem like Carter Hart wants it seems like Carter Hart wants a fresh start. And if you want a fresh start, that implies that you’re not going to go back to the place you played in before, which would seemingly remove Philadelphia from the mix. So, I don’t think Hart is coming back to Philly. I don’t think this trade has anything to do with that. This is entirely setting them up in the AHL to have Kolas off and Bjion as their one-two and the NHL firmly secured being Arison and Gladar. I also heard people theorizing about Krill Capri off. Look, if if if you want to dream, you can you can dream. I’m sure the Flyers have at least called on Krill Capri off. That said, I have not heard anything saying that anything like that is imminent. Also, they would need to open up a heck of a lot more cap space than just a little over 3 mil to make him fit. Yeah, he’s at nine a season and just turned down 16 per. Um it might take a little bit more than the 3.2 they just opened up with with uh with Ivan Fedottov. But that’s pretty much all of this uh for now. Charlie Ivan Fedottov to Columbus. No salary retention. We get a six back. The goalie situation is now Erien Vadar in the NHL, Kolasav and Bjnison in the AHL. And that’s pretty much it. I guess that’s the that’s the long and short of it. At least until another domino falls, but right now that’s all we’re saying. Yeah, I would say good work by Danny Brier. Now you can make the case that well he it was it was a a mess of his own making because they went out and they got c they got a they dealt with the coloss situation the way they did the fidotov signing like he could have just not brought him over. He could have just not gi that contract but you know what did a good job cleaning it up. Now it seems like their goalie situation is at least logical. There’s nothing where you look at it now and you’re like what the heck are they doing? They got four goalies for four spots. Kolasov will get time in the AHL. Bjnes will get time in the AHL. Vladar is now locked in. There’s not going to be some weird thing throughout camp of, well, Fedotov’s battling for a spot that we all know isn’t actually available. Like, we’re not no one no one’s lying to anyone here. Fedotov can now go be third goalie in Columbus and everyone knows what’s going on. So, good trade for the Flyers. Not an earthshaking trade, but just a good tidy piece of business by Danny Brier on a Sunday morning. What I would say is Danny Brriier well done paying $275,000 in salary to Ivan Fedottov and the other three million was an investment in Porter Martone. That’s really that’s really how I’m looking at it. They made a $3 million investment that paid off in drafting Porter Martone. Well done. Uh all right, so that is all the time we have for you on this PHLY Flyers emergency pod live in the Xfinity Mobile studio. Uh whenever stuff like this happens, we try to do a show, unless of course it happens right before our regular show. This is our first one this off season and like the rookie games are done. It’s not the off seasonason anymore. All right. All right. That’s it. I am Bill Matz. Uh that’s Charlie O’ Conor. Uh on Monday until Monday, be excellent to each other. Go Birds.
Well, the Flyers have done it again, traded a Russian goaltender with minimal NHL experience to the Columbus Blue Jackets for an unimpressive return. We’re kidding. While Ivan Fedotov was a fun story, his rookie season was nothing close to Sergei Bobrovsky’s a decade-and-a-half ago.
But on Sunday morning we did find out that Danny Briere has dealt with a bit of the logjam between the pipes, dealing Fedotov to Columbus for a 6th round draft pick. Charlie & Bill react to the trade and discuss what it could mean for the goalie situation in Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley.

Torts tanked Feddy.
Kolosov is a more of a textbook goalie, but he may be a big P.I.T.A. as has been rumored. Time will tell.
The trade makes sense as the number two and three goalie prospects are now competing with the Phantoms
They trade his salary which helps as well
Thank for the update guys
Soooo does this mean the return of Carter Hart?!
