SF GIANTS – The Time Is NOW – METS COLLAPSE!!! Season Comes Down To DODGERS vs. GIANTS
Welcome to the Humaby Baseball podcast. I’m kind of a big deal where we talk San Francisco Giants. So, you’re telling me there’s a chance? And cover the latest stories in Major League Baseball. I never heard of half of these guys. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy the show. What is going on everybody? Welcome back to the Humbaby Baseball channel and the Humbaby Baseball podcast. And today we got to talk San Francisco Giants baseball and baseball in general. It is September. It is that time of year. The playoff picture is becoming clear. It’s actually been clear for a while with a couple of teams making lastminute runs. The Giants are one of those teams. They are really incredibly close in the wildard standings. The problem is there’s just not much time left. You can see right here, the Giants 74-72. The Reds also 74-72. They are in on a two-game winning streak. The Giants lost that last game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a critical loss. And you could say, “Oh, it’s just one game.” But right now, the Giants are in a position and they put themselves in a position with that horrific run at home. Seems like a long time ago, wasn’t that long long ago that they were just simply losing every single day at Oracle Park and it put them in a position where I played taps and we pretty much figured this ain’t going to be the year. Then they turn it around in a big way. The offense comes together. We’re seeing home runs at a pace we’ve never seen before from this team and they creep to within two games of the wild card right now. And that’s with two losses in St. Lewis and an unfortunate loss, the last game of the series against the Diamondbacks. And now the Giants face the Dodgers. And the season is on the line here in this next series that we’re going to have to preview. And the only reason we’re even talking about this is cuz the New York Mets have lost five in a row, three- seven in their last 10. And their record, which was at one point extremely impressive, is only six games above 500, 76 and 70, 521 win loss percentage for the New York Mets. And if they keep losing, anything is possible right now, not just for the Giants, but for the Cincinnati Reds. The Diamondbacks had a prayer as well. But with losing two out of three in San Francisco, they’re now three and a half back. Not impossible, but they’re pretty much out if they lose one or two more games. I mean, these teams have to practically run the table, but only practically because if the Mets don’t start winning, well, they’re going to make it possible to get in with just 83 84 wins might get you in. I originally said the Giants would probably need close to 89 wins. at this point in time to get 89 wins they’d have to go 16-0. I think that’s asking a bit too much. And I said earlier, like a couple weeks ago, that 89 wins is not reasonable, not logical, and that’s clearly the case here because they’re not getting to 89 wins. But can they go 10 and six? That gets you to 84. And that’s damn possible because the Mets could very easily go six and 10 the rest of the way. um or actually they have 76 wins. So in order for them to only get to 84 wins, they have to get eight more wins. So basically eight and eight. That’s extremely possible. Extremely possible for the Mets to go eight and eight the rest of the way. In fact, I I’d be surprised if they do that well the way they’ve been playing. So this could be one of those years where the wildard team doesn’t have a whole lot of wins. you could get in with almost close to 500, just a little better than 500 could get you in this year. Of course, the Giants, like I said, they’re also competing with the Reds, competing with the Diamondbacks. Um, the Cardinals are down are four and a half out. I just don’t see it happening. I don’t think they’re going to get back in it, but there’s just not enough time for them. But it’s really interesting how the Mets are going to Met. The Mets going to Met. The Mets are going to right now. We have to take advantage of that. So, but the problem for the Giants is the rest of the way and the schedule. There’s We’re going to look at the Giant schedule and the Red schedule and the Mets schedule. Padres’s, they’ve lost two in a row, but they’re pretty well entrenched right now into the wild card with 79 wins. They would have to go on a monumental meltdown to end up not making the wild card. So, that’s the situation Cubs are, of course, in easily. Dodgers are the team the Giants are about to play. They are winning games. They’re on a four-ame winning streak. They got a pretty impressive team. Okay, I I would say so. So, right now it’s going to be Giants Dodgers and probables for tomorrow is Justin Verlander and Yamamoto of course 11 and 88 2.72 RA. Can the Giants offense do something against Yamamoto? And can the ageless wonder, the future Hall of Famer, Justin Verlin, he has been pitching well. I’m here to tell you if you haven’t been watching the Giants and Verlander, he’s been pitching well. He gets no run support. When he does get run support, something happens and the Giants end up losing the game. He has had a couple wins lately, but he probably deserves a 10 and3 record instead of a three and 10 record. So, it’s very concerning, but Verlander has been pitching well. I think most Giants fans feel okay about Verlander taking the mound at this point in time if it wasn’t for the fact that he doesn’t get any run support. Is that a true thing? Is that just a coincidence? Is that just a freak thing and every game is its own? And well, the problem is they’re taking on Yamamoto. So, I I wouldn’t put a lot of money on the Giants to score a ton of runs, but this is baseball. Anything is possible and the Giants really have to win. They have to win every game they possibly can. Um, against Yamamoto, the Giants offense has had a little bit of experience. Obviously, not a ton, but being in the same division, they faced Yamamoto this year. Adamus one for six. He did uh hit a home run. Mats homerred off him and Schmidt homerred off him. So, three home runs off of Yamamoto. The batting averages are nothing to write home about. Bailey is one for two. Mats is one for two with that bomb three-run shot. Uh, so, you know, Dom Smith has had some success. He’s been amazing this year um with runners in scoring position and in general. So, we’ll see. It’s possible. As far as the Dodgers facing Verlander, obviously they faced him quite a bit. Not as much as I thought. A lot of youngsters here in the lineup. So, uh Freddy Freeman’s only faced him four times in his career. That’s kind of interesting. Obviously, Freeman spent so many years with the Braves and Verlin’s been in the American League. So, interesting. He’s only faced him four times. Otani, on the other hand, has faced him 23 times. two home runs, three RBI’s, and a 217 batting average. Rojos 0 for six. Will Smith 0 for three. Um Betts has it looks like uh Verlander has a little onage on Mookie Betts. 19 at bats. He’s got a 053 batting average, no home runs, one RBI. So this is the matchup right here for game one. This is where it all starts. If the Giants lose this game, suddenly they will have lost two in a row and four out of five going back to St. Louis. Gentlemen, that’s unacceptable. You can’t lose four out of five and expect to make the playoffs. And like I said, we wouldn’t be talking about this. We wouldn’t even be thinking about this. We’d already be making our offseason plans if it wasn’t for the New York Mets and this epic collapse. I don’t know what’s going on with the New York Mets, but like I said, Mets’s going to Met. It wouldn’t be their first collapse and it damn sure won’t be their last collapse and they are about to take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. A team that is obviously really good and they spanked the Mets 11 to3 yesterday, 9-3 on Tuesday, one- nothing on Monday. Reds were beaten up on the Mets even. I mean, this is really bad for New York Mets fans and and the Mets. And tonight they if they lose this game to the Phillies, the Giants will gain a half game by doing nothing by doing nothing. And uh then the Rangers go to town uh go to New York starting tomorrow. And all I can say is let’s go Texas Rangers. Um but then the Padres’s play the Mets. You got to root for the Padres’s in that series because the Padres’s are already in. So we don’t have to really worry about the Padres’s. Padres’s are in. So you might as well sweep them. San Diego uh take care of business there because if you’re a Giants fan or a Reds fan or a Cardinals fan or any of these teams that are on the outside looking in and have some kind of hopes and dreams, Diamondbacks I should say as well, um you have to root for the Padres’s because the Padres’s are probably in. Things can change a little bit by then, but I think you got to root for the Padres’s in that series, I would assume, because the Mets are the team that’s that’s collapsing right now. Then they play the Nationals for two. Off to Chicago. That’s going to be a tough series for the Mets. And then it’s off to Miami. They’re going to probably, let’s be honest, they’ll probably win at least a game, probably two, maybe even all three in Miami. So, cuz the Mets are they have no choice. They’re going to have some kind of a team meeting and they’re going to they’re going to win some games. This is not the Mets aren’t going to make it easy, but they’re going to make it possible. And that’s what the Mets do. They’re they’re they’re a very talented team, but come September, come August, come September, you never know with the New York Mets, a collapse is definitely possible. So, that’s how important this game is for the San Francisco Giants. Um, every game is extremely important because the Mets are going to give you a chance. And the Reds are thinking the same thing the Giants are thinking. The Cincinnati Reds just won two out of three in San Diego and they’re going to Sacramento. Almost said Oakland. They’re going to Sacramento starting tomorrow. Minor league ballpark taking on the A’s, the Athletics for three. Then they go to St. Louis for three in a critical series right there for the Reds uh in St. Louis. Giants just had a series in St. Louis. Lost two out of three. Back home for four against the Cubs. That ain’t going to be easy. Then it’s three against the Pirates and three in Milwaukee against a very good Brewers team. So it’s not an easy schedule for the Reds. They do got to face they do get to face the Pirates. That’s a a team that’s not the best. So and they’re facing the A’s. So they’re going to have a chance for some wins. It looks about similar to what the Giants had to deal with. You know, they’re taking on a couple of big teams and a couple of not so great teams. Of course, in baseball, anything can happen, but look at the Giants. Three against the Dodgers, three against the Dbacks in Phoenix, then four against the Dodgers. The Giants, seven of their next 10 games is against the Dodgers, and the three that are not are in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks, a team they just lost a game to. This is it right here. We’re going to know because after that series in Los Angeles, which I’ll be there to cover it, either the Giants are going to still be in it healthy and well, or we’re going to be done. We’re going to be sitting there thinking, “We got this. It’s going to be an orange October. Let’s go home and take care of business against the Cardinals and Rockies and let’s get to the playoffs.” Or we’re going to be sitting there like, “Well, next year it is.” And there’s a damn good chance. I’m a Giants fan, but I’m being realistic here. There’s a good chance that happens because the Dodgers, we already know this team that we’re going to have to deal with. Mookie Betts, Freddy Freeman, Taskcar Hernandez, Show Otani, and a very much stacked team. And they are not going to take it easy on the Giants in any way, shape, or form. Let’s take a look if we can see some of the other matchups in this series coming up for the San Francisco Giants. Kershaw against TBD. So, we don’t know, right? Obviously, Web, obviously Ray are lined up, but right now the Giants have been turning a lot to Kaiwe Tang. We’ve turned to Carson Seymour. We had some injuries. Obviously, Landon RP is out. So, those are the games that are most concerning. Not to say that just because we have Webb or Ray is a guaranteed win. Far from, you know, you feel a little more comfortable with one of those names taking the ball. So, Clayton Kershaw, of course, future Hall of Famer. That would have been cool if we had a Kershaw versus Verlander matchup, but uh he’s been good. 10 and two, 3.27 erra. Strikeouts are numbers are not what they used to be, but he’s this guy’s a pitcher. He knows how to get it done, and he’s finding a way to get it done. And I’m not super confident uh excuse me, not super confident that the Giants are going to score a ton of runs. And then the in the finale, it’s Tyler Glass now. Another great arm. We We’re facing Yamamoto, Kershaw, and Glass Now. And yeah, Webb is going to pitch one of those games. We’re going to have to just bring our agame. That’s all I can say. You got to bring your agame. You get swept in LA. Unless the Mets also get swept. Unless the Mets just keep losing. Unless the Reds keep losing, like it’s probably done. Because keep in mind, just cuz the Mets keep losing doesn’t mean we can just lose. Because if the Reds start winning, they’re going to take over. If the Dbacks start winning, they could jump back up into it. And the Cardinals are not completely out of it. There’s a lot of teams in the mix right now. So, that’s why the playoff odds are are low. You go and look at the playoff odds. We’ll take a look. It’s not because they’re two games back. Two games back is actually not too shabby. That’s that sounds nice. The reason the Giants playoff odds is so low is not just because of that. It’s because there’s so many other teams also going for it. So the Giants right now 6.7% chance to make the playoffs. If you look at the Reds 10%, they like the Reds better. Fan graphs likes the Reds better. Cardinals are at 6 pretty much done, but you know they’re saying there’s a chance. And uh the other team uh is the uh that I’m forgetting about. Of course, the Diamondbacks 1.8%. 1.8. So the Giants and Reds are the two teams that really have a legit shot right now. Diamondbacks and Cardinals pretty much out of it. Uh and then you have the Padres’s who should be damn near 80%. Let’s see. 90.2% for the wild card. 98.1 to make the playoffs, which is why I’m saying you got to root for the Padres’s when they take on the Mets. Now, the Mets right now are 83.1. That was 99% not too long ago. Now, it’s 83.1%. So, it’s it’s it’s a critical point in the season right now. This next series is everything. And I’m telling you, it’s going to be exciting. So, that’s the situation right now in the National League West. this this is all we can do is just win as much as we possibly can. I say we like I’m on the team only could dream of that. But let’s go Giants is all I can say as far as that’s concerned. So, um the season is coming to an end. This is it. You know, the first podcast three weeks ago or two weeks ago, I guess it was and then a second one a week ago and here we are still talking about this. So, hopefully we’re still talking about it next week instead of a a a post-mortem. So, we’ll see y’all. um how that goes. But uh other than that, we’ve uh checked out a quick preview of the Giants Dodger series. It is not looking easy in any way, shape, or form. Giants did lose that last game. I did a post game. Feel free to check that one out for my thoughts on that last game of the series. Giants just didn’t have it. Um put up a little bit of fight, but wasn’t enough, not nearly enough to win that last game. It was a game that you really wanted to have with Dodgers coming into town. Giants do get a day off. No travel. they can relax at home, do whatever they got to do to prep for this next game. Please don’t party. Don’t stay out late. Let’s freaking go. Let’s be ready to rock and roll against this Dodgers team. We’re going to need to be 100% to have a chance to win. And honestly, like you need to sweep, but that’s probably asking too much. Will I take two out of three? I will take two out of three, but they kind of need to sweep to be honest. Um, and another piece of news this year, this, uh, this week, just happening here, Anthony Rizzo retired, hanging him up, hanging him up at 36 years of age. Uh, he hadn’t played this year. It looked like it might be the end for him. Wasn’t really sure, but he decided to retire. Had a unbelievable career, a great career. Definitely too good for the Hall of Pretty good, but is he good enough for the Hall of Fame? Three Allstars, 2016 World Series champ with the Cubs. Obviously, four gold gloves, silver slugger, platinum glove, and a Roberto Clemente humanitarian award. Played for 14 years. Did he get 2,000 hits? No. 1,644. He did get 300 home runs. Average a little low for a Hall of Famer, 261. Nice on base percentage at 361. I think this is going to be with some of the guys who are on the outside looking in. I don’t see him getting in. Unfortunately, I don’t see him getting in, but uh I mean just three allstars back to back to back early in his career. Kind of like Evan Longoria where he was just really good. But then, you know, okay, allstar is not everything. There may be some years certainly a 293 average, 27 home run season sounds like a damn All-Star year to me, but for whatever reason 2019, he was not elected to the All-Star team. 283 25 bombs in 2018. So, this man could have been a six seven time all-star. It just wasn’t in the cards for him. just multiple years here. I see maybe maybe had a better second half. Um but the kind of batting average dropped towards the end of his career. Wasn’t super great the last couple years with the Yankees. Um did hit 32 home runs in 2022, but 20 224 batting average. I know batting average is not everything. Uh so good at getting on base, getting hit by a pitch. Led the league three times and hit by a pitch. Worked a ton of walks. Definitely helped his team win games. Let’s look at the similarity scores. Okay. And you could see these ain’t Hall of Famers. Eric Keros, Kent Herbeck for the Twins, Prince Fielder, Greg Luzinski, Royce Ivers, Jeremy Bernett, Ryan Klesco, Justin Upton, Adam Loach, Reggie Sanders. So that tells you right there. Great career though. Very respectable career. He’s going to get in some Hall of Fames, you know, maybe uh, you know, Cubs Hall of Fame or some wall of fames and and and but maybe just not the actual baseball hall of fame, but great career, Anthony Rizzo. And he’s a nice guy. He’s a nice guy. Drafted way back in 2007. What a career for Anthony Rizzo. Congratulations on an amazing MLB career. You guys have a wonderful day. Reds just gained a step yesterday but we really need to focus on NYM especially since the Phillies helped us
Kinda of a big deal
Down to the wire
But who would have thought that the Giants would make it intrusting in the end. At least it's been fun. Well maybe except for old Joe. 😂
Come on Giants sweep the Dodgers. All 7 games.
Realistically: the Giants need to get 85 wins and hope. If they don't get to 85… they'll need a lot more than hope
Hoping for the LOLMets curse to kick in is a hell of a place to be…
I feel your enthusiasm Erik
It’s nice to get this little jolt of excitement when we didn’t think we would even sniff the playoffs just a few weeks ago.
I bleed, orange and black…
Trying not to think about it, but the feelings of what might’ve been still keeps creeping in there.
OK, let’s go get em, let’s be the miracle team… We certainly know our upside try to show it boys.
One inning at a time. One at bat at a time. Pay attention to detail.
I SEE THE GIANTS AS THE NUMBER 3 WC
