Cincinnati Reds vs Oakland Athletics – MLB 9/14/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)

Hi folks, John Chambi alongside Chris Singleton. The first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner, it’s go time in the second half. And if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September, you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks. And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Cincinnati Reds going up against the Athletics. First pitch coming at you right after the break. Just about set on the hill here today. JT Gin. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of erra, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that erra down because, you know, in the back of his mind beyond the W, he wants to have a better earn run average. And now TJ Fidel in there at the knees. And that’s how this game gets started. [Applause] swing and a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting second, the designated hitter, Gavin Lux. And now it’s Gavin Lux. Ball one there. The 10 just missed. Next pitch misses and it’s 3 and 0. And that drops in for a strike. [Music] Come on, let’s get the ground. Fouls one away. And now three and two. And ball four to a board. Oh, now he’s got two runners on after that walk. Things can get out of hand in a hurry in these situations. So, he’s going to have to find a way to get back into the strike zone. First and second, no outs. Ellie Dea Cruz, the next to hit for the Reds. and fouled off. First and second here. No outs. [Applause] Out to center, brings it in. And there’s one down. Batting fourth, left fieldielder. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. One of the more high-powered lineups in the game right now. It’s built to do damage, and they got some hitters that could punish the baseball. Chris, so fun to watch these players take their at bats. I mean, they’re so disciplined, don’t give not just at bats away, but really pitches away. Very aggressive, competitive in the zone, and when they connect, there’s usually some loud noise to it. So, we’ll keep our ears open today. Fouled off. He was late [Applause] and a pitch that’s outside and a count even one and one. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off speed pitch. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. He’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact. That’s outside now. Two balls and two strikes. [Applause] Two on, one out. Countful in the dirt. Well done behind the dish. Tyler Stevenson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. [Applause] In the air of the infield and the infield fly is called. Batting fifth catcher, Tyler Stevenson. In now for the Reds, Tyler Stevenson. How many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game? It happens every night in baseball and maybe it happens again here. And the slider catches the zone. 0 and one. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Fredel on second. Lux on it first with two down. [Music] And the slider just misses. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. And right back to the mound. Third out that ends the frame. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. And the A’s will get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. Back here with my pal Singi and on the mound today, Brady Singer. Chris, what are you looking for from him? And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. Bottom of the first. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. line drive and this might be trouble around first and hustling for second. The throw in and he’s there with a lead off double. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. Next up for the A’s, Shay Langelers. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone to third. Hayes one gone. Bottom half of the first batting third, first baseman Nick. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. [Applause] Nick Curt stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. And the count one and one. This one smoked. Could be trouble. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. [Applause] Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. At 110 mph on the exit veh. That thing was screaming. And that’s some serious bat speed to generate contact like that. And no doubt a higher launch angle sends that thing out of here easily. One out, runner at second. Brent Worker up next for the A’s. swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that. Just a simple ground ball the other way. Had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. Put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball left field. Dela Cruz holds it in on the run. That’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch. We all know those could be a little tricky, especially if the wind swirling around out there. This is JJ Bladeet. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. [Applause] Ball that’s outside. [Applause] Curts the runner at third. Rooker at first. Two out of the inning. And a foul ball. [Applause] That one’s in there. Two balls, two strikes. He goes down looking. Two men left stranded, but they do push across one. One inning in the books here. It’s the A’s one and the Reds nothing. New inning getting started and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Will Benson baby again back to work and that’s downstairs. Ball one. And another ball umpiring behind the plate for us today. Boog is Mike Filillmore. and he is a good one. He’ll reward pitches on the edges a little bit, but the main thing is he doesn’t keep you guessing. Once he established that a pitch is a strike, it stays that way. Outside corner, there’s a strike. Yeah, Philillmore kind of I don’t know, you’d say maybe an umpire’s umpire, but really consistent. Very fair. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Cortez gets under it. One down. Batting seven, first baseman Spencer. And now the first baseman Spencer Steer. ball two. Two balls, no strike. Nasty 20 slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. One down, base is empty on the ground to first and he takes it himself for the out. Batting eight, third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases, Chris. And that’s him for a strike. Four and one. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. That one finds the zone and the count is 0 and two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement in the dirt now. One and two. [Music] Swings and misses. Struck him out. And one, two, three go the Reds. They trail here. One- nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the third base. Hernald Hernese. That one catches the zone. It’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Struck him out looking. So digging in, Carlos Cortez. [Music] Pitch in the dirt. Ball one. And there’s the strike. Pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes towards first. Steps out first for the out. Batting ninth, second baseman, Zack Gellof. Zack Gellof the next to hit. And a swing and a miss. Oh, one’s the count. That one off the mark. And the count is one and one. One and one. [Applause] Not in time. Great effort, but it’s an infield hit with two outs. You just want to find a way to keep the line moving for the next guy. So, an infield single right there does the job. Nicely done. Just putting it in play and getting down to first to keep this inning alive. You never know what might come next as a result. Back to the top of the lineup now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. A double and a run scored his first time up and that drops in for a strike. Pitchers always face a dilemma trying to figure out how to attack this guy. He went with the breaking ball right there, but it feels like that approach might be playing with fire. He loves to go after pitches with a wrinkle in it. Two outs. Foul ball. That one way inside. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. The A’s strand one, but they still lead it one- nothing. Out of the third inning in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan. Matt Mlan fouled off left side. [Applause] And the O2 in the air fairly deep to right field. Leay pulls it in and there’s one away. Up next for Cincinnati. Center fielder TJ TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. He’s one for one. Let off the game with a single. [Music] And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Quickly an O2 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. One down. Base is empty. to the right side and he handles it himself for the out. A well thrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward breakter Gavin Lux. So now the DH spot Gavin Lux Lux throws right, bats left, batting second in today’s lineup and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Wisconsin. That’s a hit and that keeps the inning alive. Now batting short stop Ellie De. Now it’s the short stop. Ellie Dea Cruz 0 for one with a fly out to center. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And a slider in there for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. That one way inside. [Applause] Two outs. Two two count. Cuts out it and misses. That’s a strike out. Went back to the sinker and it was successful. So one left for Cincinnati. still behind by a count of one to nothing. And we’re back as we go to the last of the third. And the batter now, Shay Landelers. And that one fouled off. Here comes the 01. Slap the other way. Foul. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] Switch through that one. It’s a strike out. Beat him inside on that last pitch. And when you look back at the pitch sequence on that strike out, it’s pretty interesting. Away, in away, and then back in again. really commanded both sides of the plate right there. And that makes it pretty tough to get comfortable in the box. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. Doubled his first time up. And that misses. And that’s ball one. And he takes a strike. I got a ball. One strike. [Music] And that’s through there for a strike. And they count. One and two. Here’s a high chopper. A’s to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Up next for the A’s designated hitter. Two out space is empty now. The A’s designated hitter Brent Rooker. One for one with a single so far. That’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] That gets the top of the zone for a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And they’ll do it again. fights that one away. Still one and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. That misses the zone. Two balls, two strikes to count. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Grinding AB right here about to see pitch number 10 next offering way off the plate. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. And that’s low for ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. When you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Next up for the A, Jacob Wilson. This guy makes great contact. One of the best in the game and putting bat on ball. He’s got such quick hands and he’s gaining pitch recognition that keeps him square to the plate. There’s a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time and that produces solid contact consistently. Singer with a move to first. [Applause] Ripped to third but handled. And that’ll end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Start of the fourth. Here’s the left fielder, Austin Hayes. And a foul ball. [Applause] popped up foul territory behind the plate and out number one on the grab. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Here’s the Red’s catcher, Tyler Stevenson. He’s 0 for one. That’s in there. Strike one. Just missed. Swing and that ball smashed on a line. That’s out number two. Now batting right fielder Will Benson. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. Fly to left his first time. And a swinging miss. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. That missed by a lot and it’s one and one. A’s leading by a run. The 1-1 is fouled off and now it’s one and two. Hit hard on the ground to short. Fires across the diamond and the Reds go one, two, three. Nobody left for Cincinnati and it remains one- nothing ready to go. Bottom four and now the right fielder JJ Betielder JJ Blade and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these athletics doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. That’s down and in. A slider missed. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Swings through that and it’s a strike out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Now back out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. First pitch misses. One out. Base is empty. [Music] That one off the bad part of the bat. Just a lazy fly ball. Mlan makes the grab. Two away. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder. Ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Carlos Cortez getting ready to hit 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. fast ball for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. The A’s go quietly and one, two, three go the A’s, but they lead it one to nothing. And we’re back. And now the first baseman, Spencer Steer. Spitzer Stethletics again. Back to work. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Well, these Reds need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. They’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority, but it’s just not happening for him so far. Zero extra base hits in the game. So, it’s been tough for him to get anything going. Out front. Rip foul. Sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through. But, it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves there. And he chases that one below the zone. keeps the attack going with a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Line drive balls it in and there’s one away. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove, but you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. So up next, KB Ryan Hayes struck out swinging his first time. And that one’s a little bit low. And it’s one and0. No one. No strike. And that’s in for a strike. [Applause] Next offering pop foul off to the right. Out of play. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Good job to fight that one off. The A’s up by a run and we’re in the top of the fifth. Ke down on strikes. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catch are on the same page right now. Max Mlan. [Applause] Next for Cincinnati, Matt Mlan flyed to right his first time. Just missed. Two down. Nobody on. Started to swing. Held up. Really good check swing right there. So difficult to hold off on the slider from a same side thrower. Very difficult to pick up the release point. That one fouled off. Two and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings. Smoked on the ground to second. Throws to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books. It’s the A’s one and the Reds nothing. Zack Gellof will hit next for the Athletics. Second baseman Zack Gellof. [Applause] Ground ball right side and it goes just foul [Applause] and that clips the inside corner [Music] up the middle on to first and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth. We talked about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. So, the lineup flips over. Lawrence Butler now at the plate. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. just missed. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. And that’s off the outside edge. Now two balls in a strike. Tried to back door him with that slider right there, but just missed off the plate. Good pitch though. And strike two. Let’s go. hit in the air left field and he makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting the catcher Shay and now here’s the A’s catcher Shay Langalers known for his rocket arm behind the plate. That clips the zone. Go and one. And that one just missed off the outside edge. [Music] And a breaking ball misses outside. That one is absolutely belted. Going gone. A laser to left and they boost their lead. It’s two nothing. [Applause] That slider on the outside part of the plate is typically hit the other way. But to be able to get to it, pull the baseball and get it up in the air for a home run. I’m just really impressed. Hurts up to it for the third time as he lays off inside ball one. Two outs. That’s two count. Great hitter at the dish. If you’re going to miss, you’ve got to miss outside the zone. You miss inside the strike zone, you’ll be asking the umpire for a new baseball. That’s inside. Singer maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. That swing is all about confidence. sitting pretty with a three-0 count and using it to your advantage instead of wasting what turned out to be a good opportunity. A great job of hitting and the result is a single. Good stuff. So, two down and now the DH Brent Rooker. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. [Applause] Nope. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Curts off of first with two away. [Applause] [Applause] The 1-1 right through there for a strike. Movement in the bullpen. Andrew Abbott up and throwing for Terry Francona. Sudter also getting ready. [Applause] The one two jumps but it’s off his glove. Wins the race to the bag and they get it out of the play. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run and it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher Brady Basso, he’s pitching on two days rest. So, back to the top of the Reds lineup. TJ Fredel digs in now. One for two. Swinging a foul straight back. comes up empty. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three line drive and that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. jump and I think that was the difference on the play. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Now the number two hitter, Gavin Lux. Now a high-fly ball out to left center. Cortez looks it away for the out. Up next for Cincinnati. Shortstop. Ellie de la Cruz. Ellie de la Cruz the next to hit for the Reds. Bowl for two in this one. swinging a ground ball up the middle. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. He beats the throw and they can’t get the out. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Brady Basso is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this now pitching number 49 takes over on the mound and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Runners of the corners here. One away and now it’s Austin Hayes. He’s been a great free agent sign. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Two on, one out. And look out as that one ran in and got him. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. [Applause] fouled off. Base is loaded. One away. And that one upstairs. Ball one. In this situation, he’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. Fought off foul. But I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Next offering is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] And the next pitch is way outside. drilled out towards left center field. Cortez on the move to the gap. He’s got it. Runners tagging from second and third. He’ll score on the sack fly and now they trail by one. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner at third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play. And a nice job with the sack fly. Now it’s the right fielder Will Benson [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But left the bat on his shoulder and now it’s even up. [Applause] Two on, two outs. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. [Applause] Bows it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Two outs. Misses inside. The countdown now two and two. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] goes down looking. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Andrew Abbott. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Jacob Wilson getting ready to hit the Athletics short stop. Jacob Wilson. The shorts stop takes a ball. Activity in the bullpen for the Reds. Scott Barlo, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Line drive base hit and the lead off man aboard. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Now a chance for JJ Blade. Fast is outside. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. Wilson aboard here at first with nobody out. Abbott in his second season, 25 years old and he was a second round pick in 2021. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at 2 and 0. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Ground ball left side could be two. The turn by Mlan at second onto first. Ow. Double play. Just got it there in time. Now batting third baseman, Daryl Hern Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Music] right through there for a strike. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. very dominant with that fast ball inside. Hitters going to be conscious of that. Now you have the outer half of the plate to work with out there on the mound. Swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field. Hayes makes the catch and that’ll do it. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Mitch Spence. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Now, at the plate, Spencer Steer. First baseman Spitzer Steer. [Applause] Pitch is in there. That’s strike one. on the ground right side in plenty of time to first and the lead off intersect down to open the seventh. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Kean Hayes the next to hit for the Reds who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Justin Sterner appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Barnett getting cranked up as well. Looking to get the tying run on base. Outside two and 0. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Next offering is in for a strike. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. And it remains two and two. Stays alive. Fights it off. He’ll see another. One down. Base is empty. Flares it into the outfield. That one gets down for a hit. Hey, whatever works, right? Doesn’t have to be impressive. Pitch was away, so he definitely pulled off it there. Not what you want to do with the pitch in that location really, but he was able to guide it into the outfield for the knock. Mlan up to bat next. Lays off for a ball. moved to first. Hayes back on a dive. I think you want to get a one-way lead, be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. That’s to third and it’s just fouled. That was close. And that’s outside on this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. TJ Fredel in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And ball four, two aboard. Walks out of the bullpin. can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly. They’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead. So the tying run in scoring position now. TJ Fidel the next to hit for the Reds. [Applause] And he swings and misses at the initial offering. One out. The possible tying and go ahead runs on base. Curve in the dirt. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. Right through there for a strike [Applause] two. This one in the dirt. Nothing happening on the bases though. base hit right field. Throw comes in quickly and the tying run forced to hold on at third with one away. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. So, bases loaded with one away. Next is the designated hitter, Gavin Lux. Just next offering is down low. Pressure’s on right here. Two O count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Just missed. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. [Applause] There’s the strike. Fouls one away. And now three and two. [Applause] Oh, great stop. There’s one out to first. Not in time. Great effort there. I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Mitch Spence gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching Barnett into the game. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. and net. [Applause] Big attack coming up with Ellie de la Cruz stepping in one for three and that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Mlan at third. Lux on first with two down. And that’s fouled off. [Applause] Two on, two outs. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. drops into the glove and that’s the third out. But they’re able to even it up here in the late innings. Seventh inning stretch time. We are tied 2-2. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder Carlos Cortez. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side. Same side he throws from swinging a ground ball and that’s just foul. Ball strike and that’s through there for a strike. One ball, two strike. Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. Helpful [Music] foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch [Applause] in the air left side makes the catch for the up next for the A’s. Second baseman Zack Gill up next for the A’s. Fast ball for a strike. [Music] Missed with a change up. One and two to count. Tough to take a two strike change up that just missed. I think it froze him. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. [Applause] That one drifts inside. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re heading the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Step off throw to first. Gellof dives back in safely. Butler in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run. Stands at first. Run around to go. Pitch in for a strike. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag. And the go-ahead run is now in scoring position. [Applause] The change up missing and it’s two and one. Two, one strike. [Applause] That’s a strike. [Music] hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Big strike out there as he works to strand that go ahead run at second base. But job’s not done yet. Got to get that last out before you can exhale and get back into the dugout. It’s kind of tough to do with this home crowd applying so much pressure. So the go-ahehead run and scoring intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get it out. That one the other way, reaching, try, but it falls in. Here comes the throw, but it’s offline. He will score. Comes to with the RBI. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. First and second, two outs. And next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. And there’s a foul ball. One-run game. The A’s looking for some insurance. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] In the air, left field. Hayes has it sized up, squeezes it, and that will end the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run as the A’s are on top. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re in the top of the eighth. Here’s the left fielder, Austin Hayes. Fouled off. He was late. [Applause] This one driven deep way back there. And it’s gone. We are tied. He powers that one out of here. His 16th homer of the year. And we’re starting over. It’s 33. The brighter the lights, the more he shines. Yeah, this guy lives for big moments. And right there made a statement big time. I’m excited to see that one again, but with the Stackcast data because that was a bomb. O says he drove it out of here at 115 mph. I think I heard the ball screaming on its way out and that’s some serious exit. Vo pretty elite and he caught it just right to get it up in the air as well. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. And now here is Tyler Stevenson. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that lead off home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And it’s not looking too. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. [Applause] And now one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So the go ahead run is on base with a knock. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. And now the right fielder Will Benson 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike at 95. The go-ahead run aboard at first. Nobody out. [Applause] On the ground. Hern the throw to second and that’s two. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Now that first baseman Spencer Ste. [Applause] And the batter now Spencer Steer 0 for three in this one. This one lifted in the air left field. Cortez makes the play and that is that. But this clutch home run gets us even again. We’re tied now at three apiece. Back after this on the show now pitching four. And now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Nick Martinez. Martinez. and he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Now here is Jacob Wilson Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits on the ground to third. Hayes to first. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Now batting the right fielder JJ Blade. Now it’s the right fielder JJ Blade 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. Phillips, a right-hander, loosening up as well. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. A’s looking to put the go-ahead run on base. [Applause] Popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it. makes the grab and there’s two gone. That was a good hard fast with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. [Applause] Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field that gets down for a hit and a go ahead run is on base. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. [Applause] Two outs, runner at first. Next up for the A’s, Carlos Cortez. line to left and it stays fair around third. The tag and he’s in there. Four to three. They take the lead. Back to back base hits showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that is ball one. [Applause] looked like it was a little bit up. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Let’s go. Come on. Hayes snags it and that will end the inning. A’s get one on the RBI double. Last chance coming up for the Reds. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Shawn Nukem. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Now into the game, Max Schum. He’s the new third baseman. Now playing third base. Number 12, Key Brian Hayes now at the plate. What are you looking to do in these spots? You’re down a run. You’re leading off the inning. He’s not a power hitter. A guy that’s looking to tie it up with one swing. So, he’s going to take and get into this at bat and try to get deep into the bat. ultimately however he can get to first base. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] Oh, that got away from him. And he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Pitch hitter coming on Miguel Anduhar. A runner at first, four, nobody out. So, a change being made in first base on a pinch run. Noel V Marte number 16 Noel V Marte. And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] right through there for a strike. I got one ball, one strike. The two strikes may see some movement over there in first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swing and a pop up. Foul territory for the catcher. And there’s one down. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. He’s two outs away. TJ Free the next to hit for the Reds. [Applause] And that one is inside. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. One-run game here in the top of the ninth [Applause] on the ground to the left and foul ball headed towards the corner. Dives, but it’s foul. A on one lead here at the top of the ninth. [Applause] Pop up here. Third base side. Brings it in and there’s two away. Up next for Cincinnati, the designated hitter, Gavin Lux. Reds down to their final out. And now the designated hitter for the Reds, Gavin Lux. Little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here. But the lefty lefty matchup. Runner on the move. Pitch misses and safe. It’s a stolen base and the tying run is now in scoring position. [Applause] So the tying run at second. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Swaying and a miss. Missed that by a mile. That’s strike two. One strike away. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes off the plate. Ball two. [Applause] Swing at a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score easily. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds. And there’s a ball 10. 4-4 in the ninth. That one hooked foul [Applause] and a count one and two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open. Not close with that one. Two and two. [Applause] That’s down and in. That’s a really good take. Austin Hayes would be next if they can extend the inning. And he’s homered already, so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Got it. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Connor Phillips, he’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So, coming into the game now on defense, Santiago Espino. He’ll play second. one back to the top of the order now. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler one for four with a double. Sliced hard but foul. The one on the ground right side and it finds its way through for a hit. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. He’s already homerred in this game. [Applause] That’s in for a strike. [Music] [Applause] This guy’s got good power. With one swing, he can win it for him. And fouled off. [Applause] runs it up to 96 to record the punch out. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count. You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there, he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Nick Curts will hit next. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One down. Winning run on first and he grounds one back up the middle. Can’t club it cleanly and no shot to get him in first. There’s two aboard. Well, that atbat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So, really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. That’s one of those you classify as just too hot to handle. Hit it on the screws and it couldn’t be fielded cleanly. But you can’t really blame the defense in that case. Now just one swing away from potentially walking this thing off. Rooker in the box now takes strike one. And that one is in the dirt. One and one. [Applause] Winning run stands at second. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. And a swing and a miss. And two away now. Now batting. And now the short stop, Jacob Wilson. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. There’s a strike. [Music] [Applause] Yeah, that skips in the dirt. One and one. [Applause] Oh, he can’t hang on. Gets off a throw. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. So, they can’t come up with the winning run and that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. And we are tied 44. We’re back in a new arm on the mound as we start extras. Justin Sterner and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Go ahead run on base. Now Austin Hayes, he’s already home run here in this one. Austin Hayes. [Applause] That one finds the zone and that’s strike one. right through there for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Tied at four. Got him looking and now away. Well, that’s not the best two- strike fast I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the heart of the plate, not expecting it, and it just kind of freezes you. Digging in, Tyler Stevenson just off the inside edge with the go-ahead run, standing at second here in the top half of the 10. Here’s the pitch. Runner breaks for third. There’s a ball. Throw to third and he’s in there easily. And the go-ahead run is now only 90 ft away. I’d say an aggressive roll of the dice there to steal third in this spot, but they felt good about it and it worked out. Now the game plan changes a little bit at the plate to get that go ahead run home. The defense might pull the infield in. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] Little bit low. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. The 3-1. This one in the air center field makes the grab. Runner tags from third. The throws offline. He’s saved and it’s now 54. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a strike out. And first offering is fouled off. He didn’t want to give up that run, but he did. Got the fly ball. Sack fly out. Now it’s time to attack these other guys. Get your team back in the dugout. And that one fouled off. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Two out. Space is empty. [Applause] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. So they scratch across a run on no hits, no errors, and no one left on. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Reds five and the Athletics four. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Emlio Pagan. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. So digging in JJ Blade, man at second, nobody out. Chris certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah. The way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. So the tying run at second liner and this could be trouble coming home. He’ll score. It’s a leadoff double and the winning run is at second base. Well, that’s how you respond. Lead off man comes up, gets in the scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And here is Max Schuman. entered the game on defense. So, this is his first trip to the plate in this one at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Winning run out second. No one out. [Applause] Out in front and foul to the left side. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit, spread out those feet, whatever it takes. The winning run on second base and a swing and a miss. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. And that one upstairs. [Applause] And that is downstairs. And the count is 2 and 0. [Applause] Ripped to short. Throws to first in time. That’s an out. Now batting second baseman Zack Gill. Next up for the A’s, Zack Gill. [Applause] [Music] Slice to right down the line and it’s foul. Man on second, two down. Fought off. Foul [Applause] outside low. It’s a ball in two strikes. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Winning run and scoring position with two away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out at a splitter. So, one run on one hit. No errors and a runner left. On to inning number 11 we go. We’re all tied up 55 and we’re back. Now we go to the 11th and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Spencer Steer [Applause] Sterner back to work. And there’s the strike. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Here’s the pitch. Runner on the move. Swing in the miss. Throw to third. Save. No ball. Two strikes. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Popped up foul territory behind a play. One up. One down. Up next for Cincinnati, third baseman Noel V Marte. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position in now for the Reds. Noelv Marte entered the game as a pinch runner. First plate appearance for him here. One. It’s a pitch out. Nothing doing. And that’s ball one. [Applause] That clips the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. Runner holds. Count goes to two and one. Just off the inside edge, Santiago Espino in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And it’s a full count. Now, as a hitter, you don’t know what to expect here in the 3-2. If he’ll throw a breaking ball 3-1, he’ll do it again. 3-2 ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Up next, two on, one out. Now it’s the second base, Santiago Espino taking his first at bat here in extra innings after coming in on defense. right through there for a strike with a go ahead run at third. And here in extra innings [Music] [Applause] foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] keeps the attack going with a foul ball. [Applause] Field two and that one lifted in the air center field. Butler squeezes it. Runner tagging from third. Throw is offline and he scores and it’s 65. Well, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough. And that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. Here’s the center fielder, TJ Fidel. Well, these type of finishes go a long way for a team. They still have to win the game, but it’ll mean a lot if they close it out. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] Late swing foul to the left. [Applause] Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. That one misses and it’s one and two. One ball, two strikes. The count [Applause] and there’s a ball. Two strikes. Marte off of first with two away. [Applause] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. And he grounds one to the right side. Gellof. That’s the third out. So they scratch across a run here on no hits, no errors, and a man left. Last shot here as we go to the bottom of the 11th. It’s the Red six and the A’s five. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler [Applause] [Music] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. In today’s game, outs are valuable. So guys aren’t just willing to give themselves up to advance a runner. They’re trying to drive him in as well in the process. So, I don’t expect him to shorten up and just try to hit behind the runner here. [Applause] So, the tying run at second. Get on the ground to short to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. protecting with strikes on him and putting the ball in play. Speaks to cutting down the strikeouts, shortening up with two strikes. Here’s the catcher to hit Shay Langalers. [Applause] And that one fouled off. [Applause] Here’s your one. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Applause] Here’s the O2. And that’s down and away. Two strike. Nobody out. Both the tying and winning runs on base [Applause] on the ground right side. And it goes just foul. [Applause] That’s off the mark. Two and two with the tying run at second, winning run at first. And the home team trying to pull it out. Next offering upstairs, Nick Curts in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Swing and a miss at the splitter and it’s a strikeout. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. That thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. And a dangerous hitter coming to the plate. Kurts digs in now. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] bounding ball here. Rolls foul. Big spot. Tying and winning runs aboard with one down. [Applause] Three swing and a miss. Struck him out. But no advance from the runners. As a hitter, that’s one of those pitches that makes you say, “What was that dirty downward action at the very last second, and you just have no chance?” Only way to combat that is to maybe see it up in the zone before committing, but again, it’s definitely way easier up here than it is down there. The Athletics down to their last out and next will be the cleanup hitter, Brent Rooker, down to their final out, but an opportunity to deliver the tying and maybe even a winning run. Let’s get a big [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Applause] Two outs. Strike two. And there’s a real chance they get out of this without allowing a run. Pagan is just one strike away. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going and that’s the ball game. Well, I love the fact they didn’t quit. They had to do a little extra work tonight to secure this win, but it’s what you got to do over the course of a season if you want to be a championship ball club. 65 the final here today. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. What’s the move?
