I think they got in their own heads a little bit. They really thought they were gonna be hot shit and now they are getting punched in the mouth. And dont say injuries, even down those players they are better on paper than 75% of the defenses in the league. And they are currently 24th or worse in all major categories.

This isn't helped by the fact that Teryl Austin is a complete fraud. Yes it is Tomlins design, but both have confirmed that Austin calls the plays. And the only two he seems to know are zine coverage rush 4, or a LB blitz up the middle. That is it. The entire scheme relies on TJ to force a fumble at some point, and if he doesnt we're screwed. I've never seen a coordinator have this little success with a loaded roster.

And the cherry on top of all this is that we spend a league-high $163m on our defense, which is $25m more than the team in 2nd.

I dont know if it's more on the players or Austin at this point, I really can't tell it's just all bad. They look soft against the run and confused against the pass. But the common denominator on the defensive collapses the past 3 years has been Teryl Austin. Seems like he decided this year you can't collapse if you start off like shit. 1000 IQ play.

  4. Our coaches are trash, and it doesn’t help that our owner is too much of a pussy and broke to actually to something about it. Omar khan is a complete dumbass for letting the entire offseason go while the entire fanbase was begging and pleading for a wr2. Dk was doubled all game, and our other receivers didn’t do a damn thing. Oline sucks

  11. The players are fine, it’s Tomlin and Austin. They don’t (or barely) adjust defensive schemes game to game. Teams we play have literally been heard on the field saying, “It’s the same plays! It’s the same plays!”

  13. When you have bad coaches like Tomlin and Austin orchestrating the defense, this is the outcome. Also, Watt and Heyward are certainly playing like they just got their last contract

  23. What the fuck am I even looking at?!?! These guys are selling us on ‘this D could be historic!” in the preseason. Are you fucking with us? 30+ points back to back… to the JETS and SEAHAWKS!!! We have the god damn Lions on the schedule – are they gonna hit 70???? We’re getting blown off the line of scrimmage half the damn time unless we sell out on the run. We had a series where it looked like the backups were all in – I saw Herbig, Sawyer and Holcolm in and Cam and TJ were out – and I swear it looked better than the starters. What the fuck is going on?!?!

  28. The defensive scheme is so piss poor. Our middle linebackers just aren’t where they need to be. They’re constantly caught in no man’s land, incapable of plugging run gaps and/or not dropping back far enough when in coverage. It leaves our entire defense disconnected, forcing our DBs to play on islands while vainly hoping our pass rush gets home. It’s pathetic.

  30. Tomlins not a good coach, at least not anymore. He’s a defensive Coach see stats above, and one offense is bad forever. I ask Tomlin defenders what does he do well?

  32. This is pathetic. This is against bottom of the barrel teams as well. Imagine what the Ravens, Bengals, Bills, and Packers will do to this team. I’m convinced this will be Tomlins first losing season now.

  36. We have a schematics and personnel problem. Our LBs besides watt and high smith are not capable of stopping run as well as the defensive front besides occasional stops by heyward, black, or queen coming in. We need to shift from a LB front to a 4-3 or just run 3 safeties all game with Ramsey being one of them. We look weak up the middle and slow on the outside. They are gonna get massacred by the Ravens if they don’t fix it. i rather a hybrid DE than a undersized outside LB.

  38. I did see slight improvement but the mere fact that Seahawks scored 31 nukes anything!

    Austin needs to scheme better and call better players, “If” tomlin isn’t already calling the plays, time to take over the defense and give Austin the boot. Players need to tackle better and start playing like they’re paid to do!

  42. The defense gave up 24 today, let’s be real. On top of that a lot of injuries. Not giving excuses but I have to imagine they improve and today was certainly better in some aspects .
