HUGE New York Rangers ROOKIE CAMP UPDATE…
The NHL regular season is still a bit away from starting up, but that does not mean that we haven’t had some New York Rangers hockey already played. As of course, the rookie camp has been going on for a little bit now. And just like normal, the Rangers went up against the Philadelphia Flyers in a twoame series for rookie camp. So, in today’s video, we’re going to break down these two games here. Talk about the good and the bad that came from it on the ranges side of things here. Talk about which prospects did good, did bad, impressed, or maybe were a little disappointing. And, you know, just talk about these prospects in general that are going to be some of them, you know, some potential really key pieces for this New York Rangers team as there still are some questions on this roster at the NHL level. And of course, there are spots still up for grabs that could be won by some of these top young players. But let’s get right into things here and we’ll start off with the just basic game scores here from game one and game two. And first off for game one it was the New York Rangers losing 4-3 in overtime. And then in game two it was the New York Rangers winning 5-2 in regulation. So you know 10-1 in those two games there against the Flyers is not bad at all. I think honestly the Rangers look like the better team you could say probably in both games. I’m going to be honest and I’m sure if they ended up tracking, you know, the actual kind of like high danger, medium danger, and low danger scoring chances, I’m sure the Rangers would have been, you know, clearly on top in those categories for the most part. So, I definitely do think this team, especially in the offensive zone, you know, were able to create lots of scoring chances, you know, had a lot of pressure. I think had a lot of zone time as well with the puck. So, for the most part, the Rangers did seem like the team in control of these games there. And it net in the first game. It ended up being Hugo Olas for the New York Rangers. And he’s of course a big 6’7, 6’8 goalie, but I definitely wouldn’t say had a phenomenal performance. Looked a little shaky at moments there. You know, stopped 31 out of 35 shots. Nothing too bad, but definitely nothing too crazy. I really don’t think he looked anything too incredible, though. And, you know, my guess is he probably will be in the ECHL alongside the other goalie here who got to play in these rookie camp games, and that is Callum Tongue, who of course was signed as an undrafted guy at the end of last season there. Once he finished his one and only season of college hockey with the University of Connecticut, he goes pro and of course signs with the Rangers. He ended up getting a little taste of pro hockey at the end of last season there. But now, of course, going into game two of the rookie camp games, ended up stopping 21 of 23 shots. I think looked pretty solid for the most part there. Honestly, you know, got the win for the Rangers, but I think looked pretty comfortable and net there. I I do think if I’m kind of, you know, ranking out the goalies here and kind of placing them where they’re going to be more than likely to begin this season, I would guess it’ll look something like at the NHL level, of course, Igor Shurken and then Jonathan Quick. At the AHL level, it’ll be Dylan Garand with Talon Boy. And then at the ECHL level, I think it’ll be, of course, Callum Tongue and Hugo Olas. But I really do like what we’re kind of seeing in the minors right now for the New York Rangers goalies. you’ve got four actual prospects, like four prospects, all guys who are, you know, what, like 23, 24, younger, all four of them. So, I think that’s pretty nice there where you’ve got a really nice kind of mix of young goalies in the system right now that are just getting some opportunities at the pro level. And, you know, with goalies, it’s just so hard to tell which ones are actually, you know, going to end up even making it to the NHL level, let alone be, you know, good at the NHL level or bad. So, I would say that’s just a pretty smart move there by the Rangers to hopefully end up being able to find another great goalie at some point down the road. But, let’s move on now and take a look at the rest of the players here who of course ended up featuring in this game. And I’m just going to kind of talk about first off the five guys that I think kind of stood out the most in these games. And it’s going to be for me Scott Morrow, Brennan Offen, and Noah Laba in kind of a tier of their own. I think those are the three players that really and truly looked like the clear kind of best players in these games for the Rangers. Scott Morrow often labor the clear best in my opinion. I I think the next best guys were like Gabe Perau, Jackson Dorington. You know, you could throw in Dylan Rubric if you wanted that mix. But I think overall the three main guys that really stood out a lot were Morrow, Offman, and Laba. I think first off was Scott Morrow. He ended up having five points in these games, one goal, four assists. He just looked dominant, which is what he’s supposed to do. He’s turning 23 in like a month or so you at the beginning of this season here. So, he is of course, you know, older compared to the average kind of guys rookie camp here and stuff like that. So, it was kind of, you know, a hope that you would kind of see him, you know, have a bit of dominance here like he did. So, I think it’s not a kind of surprising thing, but it’s a good thing and a thing that I was kind of expecting and hoping to see. Same thing with Brennan Hoffman there. He didn’t have quite the points there that you know Scott Mororrow had as he only had one goal and two assists but still put up some great numbers and I think played phenomenal. He had that mass hit where he just blew up that Flyers defenseman and that is not the first time I have seen that as someone who’s you know watched him back with his Flint Firebird days and Peter Peach days and World Junior days with Canada. So I’ve seen a a lot of that before out of I think we’re going to see a lot of that going forward as well. So just more of that kind of stuff from Offman is great to see and you know he is just a really great kind of all-around player. He’s, you know, solid offensively, he’s solid defensively, really worked on his defensive game over the last kind of few years or especially, you know, since kind of joined the pets a while ago back. So, I think he’s taken a lot of strides over the past while now. He’s a really great promising prospect. And next up here, we’ve got Noah Laba, who was another player who I talked about, I think, having a pretty great couple games here. He really impressed in my opinion. He’s also someone who I have been a really big fan of and have been pretty high on for quite some time now. I remember like over a year or so ago now probably I made a video you know talking about how I thought he was the most underrated New York Rangers prospect. So I have definitely been a very very big fan of Noah Alaba for quite some time now and I am very happy to see that he’s getting a lot of recognition now from many many Rangers fans. He deserving of that. He is I would say the absolute clear by far number one center prospect in this Rangers system right now and it’s really not that close. The next best guys are like, you know, Dylan Rubrech, Bryce McConnell Barker, Raul Boyard, Carrie Terren. Like, there’s some other solid center prospects in the system, but there aren’t any ones that I think are that close to the level of Noba. And I think Rubre is a really good prospect, a really solid one. But I kind of question whether or not he really has the kind of, you know, upside to be a centerman at the NHL level in that kind of maybe a top nine role for example. So, I kind of class him almost as a little more of a winger. But that’s just kind of my opinion as of right now. Who knows? We’ll have to wait and see how things, you know, plan out. But either way, Noah Lab, like I said, is the clear by far best center prospect in this system either way. I think he’s phenomenal. I think he’s a top six caliber guy. You know, maybe he doesn’t end up becoming a second line center, for example. But I do think he definitely has that kind of potential. He’s a pretty big body there at about 6’2. He plays a heavy game. He’s pretty physical. He’s got a good defensive game, can kill penalties. He’s also a really good offensive guy. He’s got some good, you know, hands, good skill there, pretty good skating ability for his, you know, size as well. So, I just think he’s an all-around really talented player. And although I don’t think he’ll make the opening night lineup for the Rangers, and I do think he’s definitely deserving of a shot there, I just think he would have to be absolutely insanely good at training camp and throughout these preseason games, I think, to actually earn that third line center spot, for example, which, you know, is definitely still up for grabs. Right now it’s between I think Zabanagad, Bradzinski, Yuso Parson, and Noah Laba. So there is some good competition for that spot, but I think at the end of the day, they’ll probably go with more of a veteran option. That’s just kind of my guess with a guy like Mike Sullivan coming in. But I am all for potentially having you know no lab if he does impress enough and if he is good enough and is deserving of it to have that third line center spot I wouldn’t just give it to him of course because he had a good rookie camp games here against the Flyers. But I do think he is someone that you know should be right up there hopefully till almost the end of things there you know kind of competing for that third line center spot as it definitely still is up for grabs and no one has locked in place by any means. Then next up, we got some more guys who impressed a bit, but didn’t do anything too crazy good. For example, you’ve got Gabe Perau, who ended up getting a goal and an assist, but I don’t think quite had the impact I was looking for out of him as he is someone who’s extremely talented and I was kind of hoping was, you know, going to do something really incredible and really dominate these games as he’s one of those guys who is really kind of pushing towards NHL spot I feel like, but it didn’t quite impress as much as I hoped. He still looked solid though and still had some flashes of some really good stuff. Of course, he ended up having one real nice moment where he ended up kind of just laying out one of the Flyers prospects in front of their zone kind of right around the slot area there in the one game. So, I think that was kind of nice to see there. He did say he added on about like 10 lbs this off season. So, that’s obviously a big plus. He is someone who really needed to add on some weight and some muscle there as he was, you know, pretty undersized guy of course last season and still is, you know, a bit now. But, after adding on about 10 pounds there, he said this offseason that definitely is a plus. Another guy who impressed, like I said, was Jackson Dorington. He ended up getting a goal. He’s a defenseman, though. Was picked up, of course, in that JT Miller trade from the Vancouver Conucks. And he’s just a solid kind of 2-way guy. I think had a a pretty solid, you know, time with the Wolfpack last season. Will, of course, more than likely begin the season with the Wolfpack once again, but is definitely someone that’s about NHL ready. So maybe ends up making an impact at the NHL level throughout this season at some point potentially. Then you’ve got Dylan Rubre who like I said, you know, kind of the same thing with Gabe Perog. I would have liked to see a little more out of him, but still had some nice flashes. He had a goal and an assist there, but did have some good moments. I just didn’t think had the overall kind of impact that I really was kind of hoping and expecting. Then you’ve got some other guys here a couple goals or one goal each, you know, in Robo Boy Lard and Yars Melash. Just two other kind of, you know, decent prospects there. Nothing too special. So overall, I I think like I said, there were the kind of main three prospects that really stood out the most in Brennan Hoffman, Noah Laba, and Scott Morrow. Then you’ve got that kind of second tier of guys there in, you know, like a Gabe Perau, a Jackson Dorington, and like a Dylan Rubrech. And then there’s kind of the rest after that. Overall, I would say though, it was a pretty fun couple games to watch there as a Rangers fan. Just kind of, you know, finally getting to watch some New York Rangers hockey once again was a really kind of fun time, I guess. So, I’m definitely excited to see the preseason games coming up here with a bunch more prospects and NHL guys, of course, and then the regular season games will be right around the corner after that. I said it the day of the trade, Scott Morrow will be better than K Miller sooner than everyone thinks. Gabe Perreault is a player that needs to be surrounded by talent to make his game make sense. He will never be a grinder or overly physically. He needs to be on a line with other playmakers and high end shooters. I was not surprised that he looked mediocre in these games.
Maybe if the Ranger bomb again this year then it's time for a re-tool and start bringing up these young guys and dump the vets
Flers were the much better team in game 1. They outshot the Rangers 20-6 in the second period & their first line dominated. Laba & Othmann were really good in Games 1&2, but honestly Morrow was dreadful in Game 1 & much better in Game 2. He is good offensively as advertised but his performance in the D-zone left something to be desired. He's no lock to make the Rangers & David Quinn needs to definitely coach him up. Laba has really good speed & on ice awareness. He set up Perreault twice buy Gabe failed to convert. Laba will definitely have to work on faceoffs as he was weaker in that department IMO. Othmann really looks ready to take a step up & I like his chances. Roobroeck I see taking Carrick's place in a year or two perhaps. Dorrington was not as physical as he is supposed to be but he was OK. I really liked Tung better than Ollas. He's quick & seems to track the puck well.
Tung is going to be Garands backup in Hartford
