Saw a baseball magazine from the ‘89-‘90 season that listed the top 100 rookies. Very interesting to see how few players were “hot” as rookies and how many fizzled out.

Greg Jeffries, Ben McDonald and Robin Ventura….names we thought were hall of famers in the day. Greg was more for his baseball card but the other two DOMINATED in college.
Sam Sosa
Ben McDonald and Todd Van Poppel rookie cards made up most of my childhood retirement fund.
Where have you gone Kevin Mass? Yankees nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Wow, that’s a trip down memory lane.
Overall, the list isn’t a bad one. Lots of solid players, even if not everyone can be a Ken Griffey Jr. I wonder how many of them had zero time in the show, and how many of that was due to injuries?
Besides Jr Griffey, my favorite player on that list was Eric Anthony..I had a couple of his rookie cards and thought I was on my way to big bucks!!
Scott Scudder, go Reds
With a name like Goose Gozzo, how can you not be a ball player that has time traveled from the 1890s?
Sam Sosa lol
Todd Zeile is still loved by many.
i would say that the list shows that this year’s class was pretty incredible. Jr and Unit being HoF locks. Schilling, Sheffield being HoF borderline/snub types and a bunch of other hall of good players (Belle, Vizquel), this year turned out it’s fair share of good baseball players, imo.
Took me a second until I realized it was alphabetical.
Jim Abbott probably gets some very unusual requests from admirers
Mike Stanton got even better when he changed his name to Giancarlo.
This list is absolutely stacked with good players. I counted 42 names I recognize/remember. That’s a pretty good conversion rate of guys who got called up and stayed around long enough to make an impact.
Lol. Deion
I think this Griffey kid is gonna work out
I got down to Griffey before I realized they were alphabetical.
Too bad that Griffey Jr. guy didn’t work out
Joey Belle became Albert Belle
I think Kenny Rogers had a great 2nd career after that whole singing nonsense.
Lmao Marquis Grissom? Dude already looked 60 in high school.
Oakland Athletics legend Geronimo Berroa.
Kevin Maas baby. The Upper Deck rookie card holy grail volume 2.
John Olreud. Supposedly the best pure hitter since Ted Wiliams 🤣
Fun fact, I was at a Ramgers game where in 1990, and Jack Daugherty crushed 2 Homers and had like 5 RBIs.
I got his autograph and 8 year old me, thought he was gonna be the best player ever.
I’ve lost it to time, but it was a core memory I hadn’t thought about for years. Thanks for sharing.
You’ll notice this a lot more. I’ve known a few top athletes. And none of them play their perspective sports.
I went to school with a 5 star football player that singlehandedly dragged my highschool football team to a championship. Then played for a huge SEC team where he dominated. Then was a first round draft in the NFL.
He manages a local restaurant now. He probably played two years in the NFL before they let him go. I also was friends with a guy who played for the Red Sox. He played for less than a year and fizzled out. His little brother is still playing for the padres. i think. I have his baseball card at least.
