[Hogg]The Brewers have clarified that the “Bob Uecker letter” from Saturday was written by Pat Murphy

  1. holy shit was this botched. Brewers pumped this out on all socials and almost universally everyone thought it was written by Ueck himself. I had brought up in a comment that maybe murph adlibbed the winning record thing but the rest I had thought was pre written before Uecks passing.

Aside from that this is kind of weird (murph writting this).

Anyway, Ueck rules, miss him and let’s win some games.

  2. I knew it was murphy’s writing right away. He wasn’t a fortune teller. Murphy was just doing it as a closure type thing. I didn’t think it was that weird and I’m sure the players appreciated it.

  3. Ummmm….duh. I honestly can’t believe people thought it was real. It was a beautiful and sweet message but it was clearly written by Murph for the team.

  4. It was a nice thought, but kind of silly in execution. Like others I thought it was definitely meant to be seen as a letter legitimately from Uecker (minus the bit Murphy added about their record), as I could easily have seen Uecker leaving behind a message for the team during the home stretch, and why the team pushed it out the way they did on social media. And Mark A handed Murph the letter as if it was specially set aside.

I know it was meant to be a nice gesture, but now it just feels a bit hokey. Especially with the team issuing this clarification.

Edit: I don’t really blame Murph, mostly just the social media/marketing folks running with it and letting folks believe it was actually from Ueck.

  5. Shouldn’t Murphy get a “check” for using Bob’s likeness in a speech like he did?

Edit: a lot of downvoters aren’t big on ego accountability…

  6. There is nothing bad about this. Some of the words obviously couldn’t have been written by Ueck because he didn’t know how this season would have gone.

  7. I think it was an awesome idea and I’m sure the players appreciated it (which is what matters). I do think the Brewers could have handled it better by not pushing it out on social media the way that they did. It’s too sentimental of a thing for it to be misrepresented like it was. Whether it was on purpose or not, it definitely was misleading for some people.

  8. Heh, when the video appeared here with zero context I did wonder if he chose to write a posthumous letter to the future team (although I assumed it was almost certainly not the case)

  9. I think it was pretty obvious considering it mentioned their record. They should have just let it be a private moment for the team instead of putting it out there for everyone.

  10. Everyone says it was obvious. I might be incredibly dense but the guys talking about it on the radio yesterday (97.3 I think?) seemed to be taking it seriously: “I wonder if Uecker wrote one for every round of the playoffs this year”

  11. Feel like there was just a bit of miscommunication.

Pat thought it was a nice gesture for the boys.

The media team took it literally and ran with it.

No ill will by anyone involved.

  12. They need to stop pushing this Ueck narrative and start focusing on playing together and for each other and for the city. This should’ve been put to rest after the Ueck game. Since they started pushing the Ueck narrative during players weekend was the beginning of the slump. They’ve been using the fatigue and injury narrative way too much the last few weeks. Seems more that it’s emotional fatigue of carrying the burden of winning for Ueck. They need to get locked in ASAP October is just around the corner

  13. That kinda sucks tbh. I figured Murph added the “best record” part, but didn’t think he wrote the whole thing. I guess it had the desired effect, but it could have been executed better. And to all the people who said, No duh… Ueck knew he was dying and I could see him writing a letter to the guys. No one thought it was written beyond the grave or that he knew the future. 😂

  14. I figured this out about half way through the letter. The whole thing is pretty cringey, if they wanted to do this they shouldn’t have posted it online as “uecks message to the team”. I get the idea but it feels weird

  15. Wait people thought it was written by Ueck? Thought it was pretty obvious it was just a lighthearted take on how Uecker would feel right now

  16. In general I have no issue with this, but the way it was circulated was truly a disaster then. Don’t say it’s a “letter from Bob Uecker” lol. Wild

  17. It was cool when it appeared Ueck knew he wouldn’t be around the next time the Crew went to the playoffs. Less cool when I watched the whole thing and it was obvious that wasn’t the case, but maybe I missed the part where Murph told the players he wrote it in Bob’s honor? Kind messed up if that wasn’t clear to the players and they weren’t in on the homage? Meh. Go Crew, Murph’s heart was in the right place!!

  18. No reason they had to say if it was real or not. He should make letters for NL Championship, and World Series as well if they win.
