That’s a Wrap for the Carolina Hurricanes’ Prospect Showcase

The prospect showcase is over and it’s time to look at the Carolina Hurricanes train camp this week. But before we do though, what happened in game three? What are some notes to take away from it? And there are some decisions the Carolina Hurricanes have to make. What are those decisions? Well, we’ll talk about that on the Tuesday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricane, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome to the Tuesday edition of Lockdown Hurricanes, your team every day. Part of the Locked On podcast network. Thank you to the Everydayer for making this your first list of the day, five days a week, Monday through Friday, talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes. I’m your host, Zach Martin. I’m the credential Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the High Car, also the co-host of the Searchcast, which is a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast along with all of my duties here at Locked on Hurricanes. Like I said at the start of the show, we’re going to be looking through the what happened in the game three loss for the Carolina Hurricanes prospects against the Tampa Bay Lightning to round out the prospect showcase. What is the plan for Ivan Ryken? because there is a couple ways the Hurricanes could handle his 2526 season even with him being on a contract with the team. And then after that, what is next for the Carolina Hurricanes, especially with the fact that we now got training camp coming down the shoot here in the next few days. But going back real quick to the game three on Monday, the clubs at the showcase, the Hurricanes did score once again on the power play, this time by Ivan Ryken. The power play overall for the Carolina Hurricanes prospects have been really solid. I mean, you’re talking two goals in game two, one goal in game three. So, and they had another one in game one as well. So, you were talking about at least four power play goals. Hey, that’s pretty impressive so far. You look at the rookies and what they’ve done or rookies more so the prospects of what they’ve done scoring a ton of power play goals. You love to see it. Maybe, you know, there’s something that they’re looking at. I know it’s different compared to the AHL roster, but hey, you might have to feel pretty good about yourselves at least for knowing that something is going on with the power play that’s kind of working so far regardless of what level that it’s on. So, it is good to see. However, that would be the only big thing that happened in the game. After that, Tampa did score a goal in the first period before it came to a close. And then they scored three against aquap in the second period and another in the third to win the game 5 to one. And the Hurricanes do close out the tournament with an 02 and one record. Um, some quick notes, Phil Beckberg precautionary, didn’t play in the second consecutive game for the prospect showcase. And then in terms of looking at the tournament, you know, you got to see Bradley Nadell, Felix Younger Swarm, and some other guys get to, you know, show their hand in some penalty kill and power play situations because there was just a lot of special teams in game three, game three. So, you are seeing some of those guys getting some different reps, endurance situations, and, you know, kind of see their roles change a little bit, which is kind of cool to see. So, it’s good for the fact that you’re at least kind of seeing, you know, the Hurricanes, putting these guys through different developments, seeing what they can potentially do in terms of all that. So, it is really cool that even though it wasn’t a successful day to finish out the showcase, you didn’t really get a win. You got, you know, a shootout loss in one of them. It’s all about the development. We talked about this for the Monday show. It’s all about where are these guys in their development? How are you assessing them and stuff like that and looking at them at different roles. So you got to see that in game three with like I said you’re looking at you know Philixer Storm looking at the dough bribe all those guys you’re kind of seeing where they’re at. Other kind of things to take a look at too it’s just it’s an unfortunate thing when you look at Ivan Ryken 51. He that was his that was his only start of the tournament. The last time he played was in the back half of game one. Didn’t really play in game two. So, it kind of seemed like the Hurricanes wanted to split their goalies in game one. One of those guys plays the whole game for game two. The other one plays in game three. It just shows you right now that that Nikita Quap is someone who’s still a good decent amount away. Of course, that’s why the other guy got other goalies in the system. You know, you got Rouslan Kaisv who looked really good in his, you know, one and a half games. We also like the fact that they picked up Mir Mystikava the KHL and they traded for Kane Primo and with Aia Quap going back to you know Germany to play in the in the Dell second league. It goes to show that who knows where Nikita Kop is right now. It’s it’s very interesting to see what happens with him. Hopefully he kind of picks it up over back in Germany. But playing nine games last year in the top flight with Dusseldorf and 0 and5. That’s really it. Not a lot to go off of. So hopefully maybe German cycling maybe kind of figures it out. But right now he’s kind of like one of the bigger question marks in terms of the goalending in the hurricane sis. Of course you got Jacob Vandross in the CHL. They got their all their other Russian goalies as well to see what they can do over there. So, Nikita Klopp’s putting himself in a very interesting situation of where is he at when it comes to where the Hurricanes feel about him after that. But Ivan Rykin Rykin did a really good job. He’s kind of, you know, showing why the Hurricanes took him where they did, why a lot of people considered him a first round draft pick. And it, you know, makes you, you know, feel pretty good. Okay. You know, they were able to get him. They did the thing and now it’s just has he shown enough to start in the AHL possibly. I know we’ll talk more about that in segment two, but it kind of gives you a good feel of, okay, you know, we’re seeing something from Ivan Right. Can we see why he went and helped Miss Keegan win the USHL championship? You know, why he kind of, you know, did his thing in Russia before coming over to North America. So, you feel pretty good about him. Obviously, you know, not a lot of their guys really showed up on their score sheet, but overall, you feel pretty good about yourselves when you’re looking at Nidau and what he did. Bedo looked really good as well throughout the weekend. Even Lgo, you know, Charles Alexis did a really good job as well. Sticks, you don’t really see Philip Eckberg very much outside of game one, but he did have some early chemistry, so you feel pretty good about the Swede before he goes back to the OHL with the Ottawa 67. So yeah, not how you really want to end the tournament going without a win. But like I said, and Darren York said it, it’s all about looking at to see where these guys are at and their total development. You know, a lot of the guys playing in the AHL last year. Some guys played in juniors. Some guys played over in Europe. You know, very different ice, you know, ice services. Even the players are different, too. The style is very different. So, you got to see what these guys can do together as a group. Would you want to see at least a win? Sure. Yeah. Everyone loves the win. But now you see where these guys are at. And now it turns to, hey, are you going back to your junior team? Are you going back to Europe? Are you going over to the Hurricanes to join them for their camp? And stuff like that. Because with preseason coming up, you know, a lot of these young guys are probably going to play with the Canes for a little bit because, you know, they’re going to need a good number of bodies before, you know, going into preseason before they go play in, you know, the AHL with the Wolves and stuff like that, too. So, once we know for sure what the training camp roster is, we’ll definitely talk about that on the show. But that’s kind of where we’re at. Like I said, the prospect showcase was, you know, you know, seeing what these guys look like on the ice. obviously wore the new road jerseys the entire time. So, they’re always the road team essentially. Everyone else wore their dark jerseys. But either way, you know, the prospect showcase is done. Not a bad day event. You got to see where a lot of these guys are at. Like I said, I was excited for Bradley and the dough. I think he did a pretty good job overall. I think he like I kind of predicted him to be my prospect of the showcase. I think he pretty much lived up to the bill. scored a few goals, a lot of them on the power plays, you know, kind of, you know, set himself up to be the guy. Um, definitely gotta get some, you know, shout outs to Beda. He did really well. Ryken scored a power play call. Charles Alles goat looked really good on the defensive side of things. Rousan Kaisv, I absolutely just came out of nowhere. I think he was one of those under the radar guys, one of those question marks to come into the showcase. I thought he did really well. Really fell out of his 66 frame. Made some high key ch saves that the team really needed. So definitely want to keep a my eye on him a lot more as the season goes along in the in the AHL because like I said, he’s be he’s be fighting for ice time with Primo and Mystic. So I’m kind of curious to see what the Wolves do with those three down there and kind of trying to figure out how to kind of rotate them together. So but overall showcase is done. You got you saw your high-end guys be your high-end guys. You saw some middle of the, you know, kind of the middle of the pack guys, you know, have some, you know, big moments when they needed to be under the radar. Guys kind of showed out a little bit and there was, you know, some guys you kind of wish you saw a little more of, but it is what it is. But that is another check mark on the off season done as we are now into training camp week and it is not too far away and I know everyone’s excited for that. I know I am for sure. But one guy we have to talk about a little bit more is Ivan Reichen. What are the Hurricanes, you know, choices with him? Well, stick around. We’ll talk about those here in a second on a Tuesday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. The NFL season is here and FanDuel’s making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’t miss offer. Welcome back to a segment two of locked on hurricanes, your team every day. So, we talked about kind of the game three has some thoughts on it, kind of what stood out. Some guys that kind of did show show a little bit on the showcase. Now, I got to talk about Ivan Ryken. I found this very interesting on, you know, from Walt Ruff um did on their latest feature on the website. The Canes have their options up when it comes to 2025 second round pick Ivan Ryken. On the surface, his offensive tools are certainly aged already. This is all from Walt Ruff. Is the rest is the rest of his game though, and this is the key part where I really kind of was like, hm, this is interesting. Carolina could send him to Charlotte Town of the QMJHL, the Quebec um Maritime Junior Hockey League, if they feel he better fit for another junior season. So, when you look at Charlotte Town, which I thought was very interesting when you look at that as a team, it’s the Charlotte Town Islanders and they are on I think it’s Prince Edward Island is where they’re at. Very interesting team. I am kind of curious to see what that is. Now, if he does go to the QMJHL for Charlotte Town, you are able to watch him on FL hockey. So there is that if you want to be able to watch them, you can. So you’re looking at the, you know, the West division has, you know, a lot of their teams. Then you got the Eastern Conference and look at some of these other teams as well. So Charlotte Town is in the Maritimes division of the Eastern Conference with Halifax, Cape Britain, and stuff like that. So, it’ll be very interesting to see if they feel like that he should go to Charlotte Town with the Islanders. Um, not the blue and orange and white Islanders is more of a team that has black, gold, and white in the jerseys and stuff like that. It would be very interesting if they do go that route with Ripken because as of right now he was born in 2007. He’s young guy. He could still fit into the Yeah, you played in the USA. You technically could go to the CHL or we could send you to the American. I know we’ve talked I know I’ve talked about on the show a bit where it was he would help for center depth for the Canes meaning you know you got Ryan Suzuki there and past that you kind of have some other setters there but does having Reichken kind of help the Wolves be there and initially I was like yeah you know I think he can really help with the Wolves in terms of But thinking about it and after seeing that, it kind of got me wondering, would it be better to have him, you know, not have the pressure of in the AHL, you know, cuz that is a jump going from the USHL straight to the American League, 18year-old kid, you know, doesn’t make sense for Rykin to go make that jump where you played a lot of your time last season in Russia and then you go play in USAHL with Musk King and he just won the championship and all that stuff. You know, he does he did sign his ELC, but from what it sounds like the Hurricanes are able to possibly send him down. Like I said, he’s 18 center left winger 5’11 205. He is under contract, but if that is a possibility that he could go to Charlotte Town and get a little bit more time in because like I said he what he did from Muskegan, he got 30 points in 27 games, 19 goals, 16 points in 14 games with seven goals in the playoffs. That’s huge. Then if you, like I said, you go back to Dam Moskva, the MHL back in 23 24, he had 58 points in 44 games. 24 of those are goals. That’s really solid when you look at the MHL level. But then, you know, after that, played 15 games before he came back over before he came over to North America and put up 30 points in 27 games. He’s had 27 games of the regular season, 14 of the playoffs. You’re looking at 41 games total of North American experience. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad idea to send Ryken to Charlotte Town and the QMJHL if the Hurricanes believe that, hey, your offense is really good. Rest of your game still needs work. And that’s kind of what elite prospects kind of brought up in their in their evaluation of him. It’s like his offense is off the charts. His offense is great. Defensively, that still needs a lot of work. And do you want to put that pressure on an 18-year-old kid who has the opportunity to go to juniors for another season? Because you got Brillian 19, you got Felix Storm, you got a little, you know, Dominic Dick is probably come, you know, probably going to stay with the team. Like, yeah, you want to get your center of depth in there, you want to see what Ry King can do, but I honestly don’t see why it wouldn’t be a bad option if you send him down to Charlotte Town in the QMJHL. you get the full pressure off him. Now, everyone’s going to be like, “Okay, what’s he going to do? Is he is he, you know, is he taking the next step?” I mean, he’s 18. That’s a huge step for a guy like that. if there if there is that option. I that’s why I say I thought it was really interesting when Walt brought this up in the Hurricanes, you know, about you know some other notes is that they have the option to do that and the fact that he has the opportunity to go play in the QMJHL if they feel like it’s a better benefit if he had better benefit from another junior season because he’s not going back to the USHL. you would be going to this the CHL in with Charlotte Town and the KMJHL. I think it makes sense if they feel like that, hey, you know, your offense is really good, but we feel like you, you know, need a little bit more development and we’re not going to just throw you to the Wolves, no pun intended, in the American League, sending you to juniors. You know, you’re still going to be with other guys who are 18 years old. You’re already drafted. you already got your contract, but we have this, I guess, this wave. We can send you there. Not a lot of pressure is going to be put on you. You know, you’ve got 41 total games of North American ice under your belt. 14 of those being in the playoffs, but it’s USAHL. That’s kind of that level. Just go there. No, not a ton of pressure. Just go do your thing. If they feel like he can play in the American, great. It’s just is the rest of his game going to pick up there? But if you send him to juniors, where is the opportunity to go and be a top guy for Charlotte Town for the Islanders? Why not? So be it. So for me, I could see either way of of the Hurricanes going this route of, hey, you know, we think you could do it to the American might be a little bit more of a struggle or more of a challenge, but if you think you can pull it off, let’s see what you can do. But it’s like, hey, we can give you another junior season. You know, we had Bradley Nadone. Those guys come up to the American in 19. You’re 18. Let’s give you another senior in juniors. You know, other guys went to go college for their one year. Go do your thing for a season. Boom. You’re ready for 26 27 in the American. We’ll go from there. I would not be opposed to it. I think probably the best benefit for Ryken would be another season in juniors. And the odds not was Musk King in the USHL. But hey, you’re going to the, you know, QMJHL, not a bad league in juniors to go do your thing for a year. You’re gonna be in Charlotte Town. You You’re playing Cape Britain. You’re going to be playing all these other teams as well, Halifax and all them. Wouldn’t be a bad option. So, if it was up to me, I think the Hurricanes would probably send Ripken to juniors at the CHL. But, it’ll be very interesting to see how that works out. But, let me know in the comments what you believe. Do you think that Ripken should be going to Chicago with the Wolves and the American? Or do you think that, hey, he’s 18. Let’s give him another year of juniors. Give him a little bit more less pressure on his back right now. Let him get accumulated more to North American ice. Let him do his thing with the QMJHL and Charlotte Town and see what he does in 2627 with the Wolves. But let me know in the comments what you think. Now, with all that with all of that being said, what is next for the Carolina Hurricanes? Well, stick around. I’ll talk about it here in a second on a Tuesday edition of Lockdown Hurricanes. Welcome back to segment three of lockdown hurricanes. Your team every day. Now with the prospect showcase over with, what is next for the Canes? Well, pretty simple. It’s training camp week and we are finally here. Starts up on Thursday and man, I cannot tell you how much guys I’m excited for camp to be here. I know that camp roster hasn’t been official yet. Hopefully, we’ll have it on Tuesday and Wednesday and when we do, it’ll be on that next day specific podcast and we get to talk about it. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for it. And the long off season is finally coming here. And now we get to talk about camp and get, you know, what the insights are. What are we looking at? You know, new guys in, you know, new guys in new places. You know, hey, Kra Miller’s in town. Nicolers is in town. You know, we get to see some new guys in new numbers. You know, we get to see return of a lot of the main roster. Seth Jarvis, Sebastian Najo, Jacob Slavven, all of the names that you love to see. goalending tandem, you know, running it back once again. Frederick Anderson and Peter Kachchakov, how are they going to be? There’s gonna be a lot of things to look at at camp, you know, position battles, you know, what’s the 2C position going to look like? Is just Barry Cook, you know, going to be that guy or is it going to be are we going to see some sightings of Logan Dov and maybe some others? You know, who’s the who like healthy extras? Who’s it going to be? because you got William Kerier, Tyson Jo, Eric Robinson, Mark Jianowski, you know, there’s a there’s a lot of guys going to be making things very interesting. What are the defensive pairs going to look like? Who’s going to be with Jacob Slavven? You know, is someone going on their offside? Will it be Jacob Slavven going in his offside? Who’s pairing with him? You know, where how’s that Xander Aisha going to be looking with his new ro, you know, looking with his new defensive pair partner? Who’s he going to be with is the question. Is Ghost Walker gonna be a pair back again? Are they going to be split up? You know, hey, you’re gonna see Mike Riley in a Hurricanes jersey because we’re all used to seeing him and everything else more recently than New York Islanders, but hey, you know, how’s he going to be as your seventh defenseman? You know, how’s Seth Jarvis shoulder holding up? He said recently in the in the AHL media days that hey, his shoulder feels great. He said, I’ll rip up some I’ll rip some push-ups right now if you want. You know, it there’s just a lot of exciting things to come about when it comes to camp because like I said, you’re looking at position values. You’re looking at new guys coming in, you know, to the team for the first time. How are they going to be? You got guys coming in for their second years with the team overall. You know, you’re seeing a the first full season with Logan Stain coming. You got Jackson and he’s coming off a contract extension. You got Jackson Blake coming into his second season in the AHL overall and he just signed an off, you know, an extension in the off season as well with the Kings. But overall, it’s just exciting. It’s just a great time knowing that the long summer of it was it was kind of slow for the most part outside of that first week where you get Kandre Miller, you get you know Nicola Eers, you got the Logan State CO extension right away. You know, you brought Eric Robinson back right away. You look at, okay, it didn’t take very much longer for the Jackson Blake extension to come in. And then after that was just kind of, you know, meticulous just waiting and waiting and waiting for the days to come by. You know, you see, you know, you see the team trade for Kane and Primo, the draft come and gone. You saw what they what they got in there. You know, you had the rookie, you know, the rookie prospect camp, you know, just in Carolina, rookie showcase. And now that’s over with. Now we’re looking at Hurricanes training camp and there’s a lot of things to keep an eye on. Like I said, you got position battles. I already mentioned it’s just we’re we’re just ever inching closer. We’re now on Tuesday, September 16th. We are 23 days away from the start of the regular season where it’s going to be ESPN Plus against the New Jersey Devils at home at Lenovo Center to kick off the 2526 season. And like I said, there’s still some question marks, you know, certain positions and stuff like that. Who’s who’s going to be the who’s going to be the extras? Who’s the 1A? Who’s the 1B in the net? Who’s in the top six for the Hurricans? Elers’s Jarvis, obviously. AO, obviously. Is Taylor Hall going to be up there? W stay coven Jackson Blake Andre Fetchovv Kim is the 2C if whoever’s not in the top six who’s on that third right wing with the Jordans. I’m very curious to see how that plays out. Like I said, who’s who’s your fourth line? Is Janowski your fourth line center? Then who’s on his wings? Kerier Robinson Hall, Hoover’s Hoover’s in the top six and I’m playing with the third line guys. Who’s the who’s down there? Is it Hall? Possibly. Is it Jackson Blake? I don’t know. It’ll be very interesting. I’m I’m curious to see what everyone’s thoughts are when we’re getting ready to start going into camp. But I don’t I don’t know. But you guys, like I said, I’m just ready to actually talk hockey. I’m I’m ready to look at, you know, what are the lines looking like and all that stuff. I know it’s not going to matter because it’s the start of training camp. We’re still a little we’re, you know, next Monday is the start of preseason. Got our first preseason game, which is so good to think about. We got preseason hockey. Yes, it’s not a do or die situation. And it’s just, hey, you know, we’re going to see who’s playing on the ice, how they’re doing, cuz we’re not really going to know about the main roster until the start of the season and what lines look like then, but at least we get to talk about actual games. Even if they don’t count now, we know it’s like, hey, guys are on the ice. We’re seeing what they’re doing on the Carolina Hurricanes in just like, you know, battling like position battles, you know, role battles, power plays, PKs, all that stuff. It’s just it’s giving us actual substance rather than guessing like, okay, I think this is what’s going to happen. Oh, I think this is what’s going to happen. And there’s still going to be a little bit of that cuz it’s preseason in training camp. You’re not really going to know what’s going to happen by the time the season rolls around, but you at least get to see on ice product. And I think that’s kind of what the main thing is when you look at something like this is that you’re getting more meat on the bone of stuff to talk about instead of trying to like get it out of the marrow of like what can we talk about? What can we speculate on more? No. Train camp gives us that that nice appetizer of this is what’s next. This is what we could potentially look at as we get ready for the main course of a 2526 regular season. But I don’t know about you guys, I’m ready for it. Let me know in the comments below. How are you feeling coming into training camp and what are you keeping your eyes on? Because I know for me when we do our train camp preview for the Thursday show when the whole thing kicks off, I’ll let you know what I’m looking at for training camp. But as of right now, how are we feeling after the showcase and how are we feeling going into training camp because we’re not that far away? I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited for it to be here because it starts on Thursday. Preseason hockey starts on Monday. I’m excited. We are finally getting hockey that even though it doesn’t count, matters because we’re talking about guys on the ice doing hockey things. We have finally made it in some instance but I am ready for it to be here. The 2025 Prospect Showcase has come to an end, and the Carolina Hurricanes finished with a 0-2-1 record. As mentioned on the Monday show, wins aren’t the primary goal; the main objective is to assess everyone’s current level of development. That said, what are the takeaways from the last game of the showcase? On the Tuesday Edition of Locked On Hurricanes, host Zach Martin begins the show by going over what stood out in the 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Did Ivan Ryabkin show enough to get a start in the AHL for the 2025-26 season? How far is Nikita Quapp in his development after giving up five goals in his only start of the showcase? Second, Zach shares his thoughts on Ryabkin to determine which path is better for him: the AHL with the Chicago Wolves or the QMJHL with the Charlottetown Islanders. Finally, now that the showcase is over, what is next for the Hurricanes? All of that, and more, on the latest episode of Locked On Hurricanes.
