🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS New York Mets/ September 16/ Mlb Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
baseball on the show. It’s the San Diego Padres’s going up against the New York Mets. First pitch coming at you right after the break. And now, please welcome [Music] New York. [Applause] Just about set to go. And starting in this one, David Peterson and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup, they’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a cookie, you don’t want to miss it. Now a drag bun third base side. Bare hand scoop throw sails over his head at first and it’s going to wind up out of play. No problem fielding that one and the transfer looked good, but man, he sailed it across the diamond and out of play. It looked like he just tried to put too much behind it. Cost him an extra base, too. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. That one fouled off. Man at second. Swings through that one for strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it. Next offering is downstairs. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider and it remains two and two. One out and a runner at second. Spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Sway and a ground ball out to short. He didn’t make things easy for him there, but they still get the out. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat and Singy. We already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. First pitch and he just misses. Merryill at second with two down. And that one upstairs. Swings and misses. And it’s two and one now. Fouled off left side. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Ryan O’Harn in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. man on second, two down, fouled off. And they’ll do it again and a foul ball. He stays alive. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Strike him out. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it got the strike out, gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. Back here in Queens and towing the slab, you Darvish. Yeah. And as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. And there’s a foul ball for Lindor being drafted out of Mont Verde Academy. He’s a guy that’s turned into one of the best all-around players in the game. And that misses ball one. That one missed. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. just misses the mark outside the zone. Swing and a miss and he got him. One out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time a little anxious. Wan Sodto now another solid power season. Swinging a foul straight back. And there’s the strike. One down. Base is empty. Way inside. Gets out of the way. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Batting third, first baseman, Pete Alonsozo. Here’s Pete Alonzo. Double play ball to second. There’s one onto O’Harn. Two. Nothing for the Mets in the first. Second inning coming up from City Field. Nothing nothing here on the show. Back here at City Field all set for the start of the inning. So digging in now for San Diego. Ryan O’Harn Peterson back to work and that’s way high. And that’s ball one. Peterson, a tall lefty, 29 years old, a former first round pick back in 2017 on the ground right side. And that’s a fair ball, man. He just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying his mechanics. Now here’s Jake Croninworth and a pop off right side. Foul territory. Has room and he makes the catch. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Jose Glaciius the next up for the Padres’s. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. Fouled off down the right side. No score here in the second. [Music] swings and blasts one deep to left center. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. One out, runner at second. Freddy Fine the next up for the Padres’s. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Base hit. A Glacius around third. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing. Nice balance and weight transfer and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Runner on at first with one gone. Here’s the shortstop at the play. Mason McCoy check swing called strike. That’s strike one. [Applause] Late with the swing there. Boo. Our man Daryl Parker DP at home plate for this one. Pretty average size strike zone, but the book on him is that it sort of moves around. You can’t always count on how he’s going to call it from game to game. Got him swinging for the strikeout. He notches strikeout number 15 this season. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. And hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Can’t love it cleanly. Gets off a throw. The throw is late and they don’t get an out on the play. Now batting the centerielder, Jackson. Jackson Merrill digs in now. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Music] outside with a breaking ball. Swinging a miss. That is strike two. [Applause] stays alive. Firm mean on second. Tatis on first with two down. Rip towards third. Vienten whips it to first. They limit the damage here, but two runs for him and they jump ahead. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the Padres’s two and the Mets nothing. And we’re back. Now it’s the veteran outfielder Brandon NMO singing when the year’s over he’ll have a new career high for RBI’s in a season. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. Let’s go. And that is downstairs. Two and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Darvish kicks, delivers, fights it off. He’ll see another Hard hit right side. Croninworth throws on to first. So it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. And now it’s Mark Vientos. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. got it started a little too early. Strike one. One out. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And the count is 0 and two. Slider misses outside. bows it off. Still one and two. One down. Base is empty. Battling here as he fouls it away. Got him looking for the strikeout. That was pretty nasty. Two outs. Space is empty. Jeff McNeel stands in. First pitch. Just misses. Two out. Base is empty. Foul ball. Darbish delivers. There’s the strike. Come on, York. And a curve is down and in. And that one popped in the air left field. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. After two, it’s a two nothing ball game. onto the third inning. Now it’s the DH Raone Lauraniano and first offering is fouled off. That’s a little bit low. This one in the air. Alonso, makes the catch for the out. Now batting left fielder Gavin Sheets. Gavin Sheets, the next up for the Padres’s. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That clips a corner. [Applause] [Music] A lot of play off to the left. Ring him up, says Daryl Parker. That’s a strike out. Two down, base is empty. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. Singled and scored his first time. Right through there for a strike. He swings and fouls one off. Two down. Nobody on. That’s to third. Bentos. Padres’s go down. One, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars, but they hold a two nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Now here is Starling Marte. Strike on the outside corner and it’s 0 and one. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And a curve is down and in. That missed by a lot. Now two and two. Check swing. No appeal. Oh, this guy’s going to have to slow things down. There’s no reason for him to even check swing on that pitch. Was never even close. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. And now the center fielder, Cedric Mullins. [Applause] Inside ball one. Marte gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Swang and a miss. One ball, one strike. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. still try to get that ground ball double play. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and two. Gruer at first with no outs here. Next pitch is inside. Two balls, two strikes to count. Swinging a high-fly ball out there towards left field. Sheets makes the grab. One down. Batting ninth. Catcher Francisco Alvarez. Here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Music] And there’s a ball man at first. One away. Swing and a ball driven out to center. Merrill going back. Way back out of here. That’s worth the price of admission. His ninth homer of the year. It’s 2-2. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] When you have a team that hits home runs at such a high rate, they can get back in the ball game so quickly. That’s why that leadoff walk was extremely costly. Now up to hip, Francisco Lindor let off the game with a strikeout. That one at the knees for a strike. Francisco Lindor at the plate. The Mets shorts stop originally drafted by Cleveland and a guy with some serious power and an excellent defender. The pitch late swing fouled to the left. Still only one out here in the inning. Got him swinging. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Here’s Juan Sto one for one with a single so far. And first off is fouled off. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. You’re in the last half of the third. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. [Music] So, a man at first and now Pete Alonzo. He’s 0 for one. First pitch misses. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Two outs. Foul ball there. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still manages a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Mets add two runs on this blast. Two game. You’re dialed into the show. Out of the fourth, stepping in for San Diego. Jake Croninworth. Jake Cronin swinging a foul out of play. You know, these Padres’s, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Next one in the dirt. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahehead run. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Jose Glacius the next up for the Padres’s. He doubled home a run in his first AB. Gets under and pops it up. Marte sizing this one up. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And now Freddy Fine. RBI single his last time up. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Next pitch is outside. Croninworth over at first with one away. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] Next pitch off the play. Two balls, two strikes. That one is absolutely belted. Hits the fence. Here comes Croninworth around third. He’ll score easily. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Now it’s the short stop. Mason McCoy swaying and a miss. There’s the slider. It’s 0 and one. One out and a runner at second. Top half of inning number four. Squirts away a little bit. Stirring in the bullpen for the Mets. Shawn Maniah the lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Hamill a right-hander loosening up as well. Strike him out. Man at second. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there. At least to foul something off, extend that at bat. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. That’s down and in. Get out of here. Tatis waits and that one fouled off. Man on second. Two down. And that one just missed off the outside edge. Next offering misses down and away. Jackson Merrill in the San Diego on deck circle. Two outs and one in scoring position. offering is fouled back and down on strikes now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound, but a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now a 32 ball game. Back here in Queens, John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Brandon NMO. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. gets it there in time though. He keeps his composure and they get the out. Great job by the second base right there. Quick reaction to dive, knock that ball down and big leaguers just don’t panic. Not the good ones. He gets up, makes the play, really good throw over to first base. That’s the kind of composure that you want to see from a guy in that position. [Applause] Mark Vientos up now for the Mets. Struck out looking his first time. There’s a strike. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth on the ground right side and it goes just foul. Swing at a highf fly ball to left. Sheets pulls that one down. Two away now. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. McNeel in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] And that’s down and away. [Music] Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field and that keeps the inning alive. Now batting rightielder Starling Marte up to hit inside. just missed. And that’s off the inside edge. Two balls, no strikes. Let’s go York. That one ripped right center field and that should be extra bases. McNeel headed home. He scores to tie it up. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. Cedric Mullins now at the plate. Fly to left his first time. Ripped to third, but handled. And that’ll end the inning. One for the Mets here on the RBI double. We’re tied now at three a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back here at City Field. Now the number two hitter Jackson Merrill [Music] Peterson back to work and that’s off the outside edge and it’s one and0. Fast ball for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Lauriano comes up to hit. Full for two in this one. Lauraniano. Lauraniano goes 5 feet 11 in 205 lbs. And he was born in the Dominican Republic. First offering misses badly for ball one. And that’s outside. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Swang going to grounder. Foul first base side. Next offering is in for a strike. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. One down, base is empty. And that wasn’t even close. Ball four. Next for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first offering is not close. maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch, not even close. And another ball. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter’s count at 2 and 0. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. Lauriano leads off first with one away. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That’s back. That one is gone. He flexes his power with that swing. Home run number 20 on the year. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 53. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. David Peterson departs and it’s going to be a start that he’d like to get a redo on. Not his best. Back with a new arm in a minute. Left-hander out of the bullpen. Shawn Maniah. This southpaw’s been really good against left-handed hitters. So, one out, nobody on. So, digging in now for San Diego, Ryan O’Harn. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Makes the grab for the second out. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the second base, Jake Croninworth. And first offering is fouled off. And that one fouled off. Two down to foul ball still 0 and two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Two across on this San Diego homer. It’s now a 53 ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the catcher comes up to him. Francisco Alvarez. First pitch and he just misses. Let’s go. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a line drive. Slicing into right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat on the ground and it gets by him. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now it’s Juan Sodto. He’s two for two. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] The Padres’s leading by two. Last half of inning number five. [Music] A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Man, that’s just a nasty splitter. Bottom falls out of it. You don’t see a lot of guys throw that these days, but I tell you what, he’s got a good one. Little bit low. And it’s two and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Just off the inside corner. Full countdown now. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it to first. Maybe a two ball and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. First baseman Pete Alonszo. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Alonzo. swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. That’s a base hit. Lindor zipping around third. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they trail by one. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. That does it for you, Darvish. And he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound, Kyle Hart. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So, they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Here’s Brandon NMO. That misses the zone. One and0, two outs. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Close [Applause] one. Doesn’t get the call. Two and one. [Applause] That’s to third to second. Pulls him off the bag. Maybe just a little lack of concentration on that throw. Two out. You think you’ve got the play made. players are starting to move off the field towards the dugout and then everyone’s got to come back. Sometimes you take that throw for granted and that’s all it takes to keep the inning going. First and second, two outs and now Mark Ventos. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two on, two outs outside. And that’s ball two. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on, two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Little chopper rolls foul. Strike three. Got him swinging. Inning over and it could have been worse. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. All set for the top of the sixth. Stepping in for San Diego, Jose Eacius. Jose Iglacius. Fast ball for a strike. Action in the Mets bullpen. Ryan Hellley up and loosening in the pen. Reyes getting cranked up as well. Matt, just missed. One ball, one strike. And now the count one and two after the swing and the miss. [Applause] Liner caught at second. Wow, that was an awesome leaping catch. Great reactions, great athleticism, man. He snatched that thing out of the air and he robbed him of a base hit. And here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. Strike on the outside. Go and one. The one-1 is fouled off. That’s off the inside corner. Two and two. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. One down. Base is empty. Hard on the ground to first. Alonso takes it to the bag. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting short stop McCoy. Next for the Padres’s, Mason McCoy. That one finds the zone. Strike one. And a foul ball. One ball, two strikes. The shorts stop takes a ball. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Offense held in check there. 678 do in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Padres’s five and the Mets four. And welcome back to the ballpark. Well, we go bottom six. Now it’s the second baseman, Jeff McNeel. [Music] York. There’s the strike. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two and ball one. That’s a really good take. And that’s in the dirt. [Applause] lined into left center. Should be extra bases [Applause] into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes. and he usually wins the battle. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And now the right fielder, Stling Marte, first offering and it just misses. ripped on a line and that ball is gone and the Mets jump in front. It’s 65. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. And here is Cedric Mullins. There’s the strike. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame here in the bottom of the six. Soft contact in the air. That’s a hit. Up next for the catcher. Now the catcher up to hit. Francisco Alvarez. His two-run homer back in the third was an important swing of the bat in this one. Yeah, there’s no doubt he helped set the tone fairly early and certainly part of the reason why they’ve got the lead right now. That one to first and that’s just foul. Mullins aboard here at first with nobody out. That one called a strike and it’s nothing and two. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Ron Marinacio up and throwing. Pavetta also getting ready. Owen Chu now and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Not close with that one. Going to count one and two. [Applause] That’s inside. Nobody out. Runner at first. [Applause] Got him looking for the K. Frozen with a back door slider. That was a really nice pitch call for that putaway slider right there. You look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet. So, just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes. I’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t. So, the batting order turns over. Francisco Lindor up now for the Mets. One for three. Got one close rule to ball and that’s ball one. Snap throw to first and he’s back safely. That one finds the zone and it’s one and one and delivers outside. One-run game, one out, one on. [Applause] Right side hard hit. O’Harn tossed to second. What a double play that was. Inning over. Mets add two runs on this blast. It’s tightened up a bit at 65 now. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Klay Holmes coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Back to the top of the order now. Now Fernando Tatis Jr. Fernando Tatis Jr. That’s in for a strike. And that one fouled off. Punch him out. [Applause] Looking to get the tying run on base and takes low for ball one. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] Now batting the center, Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill the next to hit. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. That one down the line and it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Raone Lauriano will hit next. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] Pickoff move to second. Merrill dives back in safely. Good wheels out there on second and he’s getting a pretty big lead right now. definitely looking to score on any hit to the outfield. So, the tying run at second right through there for a strike. And the count one and two with the tying run at second here in the top half of inning number seven. A change up. Missing ball two. Hit hard on the ground to short. throws to first in time and Lauriano is retired. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Gavin Sheets. He’s already homered in this game and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that one is downstairs. And the count is one and one. Runner at second. Two down. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Chopped out in front of the plate. Tosses to first. Third out. One left for San Diego. This one remains close. 65. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Wandy Peralta. pretty tight game. So, they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And now the DH Juantoated hitter. That one way inside. Got to be real careful here. 20. He’s hunting for his pitch. MVP New York. That one misses. So a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, now batting first. Man at first. Nobody out. Pete Alonzo up now for the Mets. Ground ball left side. The throw to second is offline. [Applause] Now batting leftielder Brandon. First and second, no outs. Next to hit, Brandon NMO. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. Just missed. gets the outside corner with that one. Sodto the lead runner out at second. Alonso at first with no outs. on the ground right side and it goes just foul New York spoils that one and it remains two and two. Yeah, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. Good job to fight that one off. Two two on the way. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. caught him looking for the K. Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there. That was a tough battle, man. So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that, it’s got to feel good out there on the mound. That was a fun at bat to watch. Mark Ventos getting ready to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. [Applause] Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up. He can go away. He can add velocity. He can subtract. Hard ground ball for a base knock. Coming around third is Sodto. Now a long throw home, but it’s offline. He will score and they lead by two. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it. Crazy. First and second, one out. And now here’s Jeff McNeel. Right through there for a strike. Oh, and one. One out. Runners at first and second. That one not close. And it’s one and one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. In the dirt. Traffic on the bases with one already in here. The bottom of the seventh. Slapped foul. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Two on, one out. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Good feed. That’s one onto O’Harn. Two. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now 75. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Gregory Sodto. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. O’Harn, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. You know, these Padres’s digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. We’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one, haven’t we? I mean, they’ve lost six hits at 90 plus exit velocity, and that doesn’t happen by accident. And a slider misses down and away. That one catches the zone. Three balls, two strikes. That front door slider, such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball, so you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. Highf fly ball out to left field. NMO ranging after it. He’s there. He’s got it. One up, one down. Jake Croninworth now at the plate. Sodto 30 years old now and they traded for him earlier this year. And that drops in for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. And the slider just misses. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. York swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two down, base is empty. Jose Glaciius the next to hit [Music] and first offering is fouled off. That one missed. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Looking very settled on the mound here in the eighth. One more out. They’ll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead. Look out. And it hit him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Next, it’s the catcher for the Padres’s, Freddy Fine. Yeah, there’s the strike with the tying run at the plate. And we’re in the top of the eighth. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. tying run at the plate. And that’s outside. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That one’s back there. Tattooed and gone. [Music] A two-run shot and we’re level. It’s 77. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run and that’s exactly what they needed. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Mason McCoy the next up for the Padres’s. And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. Now batting rightielder Fernando Tatis Jr. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Gregory Sodto is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Taking over on the mound for the Mets, Ryan Hley. Big swing and miss stuff right here. Boo. Averaging more than one strikeout per inning this season. So far, he’s been pretty electric. Go ahead run on base. Now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr. Slap the other way. Foul. Two gone. The possible go-ahead run at first. York. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. got him swinging for the strikeout. Tied him up on a fast ball inside, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And we’re deadlocked here at 77. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Jeremiah Estrada. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Here’s Starling Marte. He’s already homerred here in this one. Marte. And that’s downstairs. And that is ball one York. That’s ripped into the outfield. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Great swing of the bat right there trying to get on as that go ahead run. He just wasn’t able to find a hole. Pinch hitter coming on. Ronnie Mauricio looking to start something with one gone. Ball one there. And another ball activity in the bullpen. Adrien Morome getting ready to go. Pavetta warming up as well. [Applause] Two. And that is in there for a strike. I believe that’s the split. [Applause] fought off foul. Fights it off. You’ll see another. All tied up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. A sliding stop, fires to first. It’s there and that’s a great play. We saw a few skills on display there for the out. Technique was great. Reaction time was there and the slide was smooth. Watching that play come together was really fun. Here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. [Applause] Base knock right field. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive and puts the go-ahad run on base. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Here’s Francisco Lindor and that’s in for a strike. fouled off. He was late. Alvarez leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] [Applause] And that one hit to first down the line and it’s foul. Two outs now. Fly ball to right center. Merrill sizes this one up. Makes the grab. That is the inning. Mets leave one. And this remains a seven all tie. Now into the game, Jose Siri. He’ll be patrolling center field. Number 19. So digging in, Jackson Merrill. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Eddie grounds one to the right side. McNeel gets it to first and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. So now here’s the DH. Raone Lauriano 0 for three in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Ripped to short. Lindor on to first and a couple of quick outs. Gavin Sheets. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s been a great free agent sign. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Here’s the one. That one in triple digits. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. here. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Two down just off the outside corner and the count is one and two. line drive and there’s a hit and a go ahead run is on base. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Go ahead run on base. And now the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. There’s the strike. The 01 is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Two outs on the outside corner and now two and two. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strike out. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. We head to the bottom of the ninth now. It’s the DH Juan Sodto. Well, one swing’s a lot easier than getting two or three hits to win this ball game. You better believe he’s going to be all in to hit the ball over the fence somewhere. Estrada back to work and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Bullpen action for the Padres’s. Adrien Moronome getting loose out there [Applause] outside low and now it’s even one and one [Applause] swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. [Applause] brings it in. And there’s one away. Up next for the Mets. And here’s the first baseman, Pete Alonzo. [Music] Uh-oh, that got him. And the potential winning run is aboard. substitution now at first base. Mets going with a pinch runner, Luis Anel Akuna. So up next, Brandon NMO. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base, I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down, hold the ball a little bit, step off, just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. One down, winning run on first with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Got him. And now two gone. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. So up next for New York, Mark Ventos [Music] had a strike right through there. That one a triple digits. Throw over to first. Akuna back on a dive. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Right through there for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Sets him down looking. That’s the third out. and we’ll play extra innings in this one. So, they can’t come up with the winning run. And that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. And we are tied 77. Now into the ball game on defense. Hayden Sanger. He takes over as a new first baseman. number 30. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s the second base, Jake Croninworth. Swing and a miss. And 102 on the radar gun. Man at second. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] stays alive. [Music] Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Strike him out. Ripped into right center. Should be extra bases. O’Harn rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score and the Padres’s take the lead into second easily with a leadoff double. What a way to get it going. A double to knock home the runner from second. Yeah, just clearly trading places. And now that guy on second threatening to score more runs. Good clutch hitting to lead off the frame. Now the third baseman, Jose Glacius. in the dirt. Blocked swing and a ball lifted in the air. Marte really on his horse for it. Tries to make the play but it’s fouled. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Here comes Croninworth around third. He’ll score easily. It’s 97. Well done. Drives in the run and now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Brian Helley will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Number 26 into the game. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And now the catcher comes up to him, Freddy Fine. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Popped foul out of play off to the right. The Glacius gets his lead at first with nobody out. Next offering is down low. This one in the dirt in there safely. The Glacius into scoring position on the wild pitch. And there goes the double play possibility. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in extra innings. And now it’s even up [Applause] the middle. Fires over to first. One away in the top half of the 10. And the batter will be the shortstop. Mason McCoy. I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone here. Pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball hoping to keep that runner at third. And that’s downed away. Movement in the bullpen number 21. The rookie right-hander is getting loose. Sprout also throwing one away with a runner at third. And here in extra innings. And a swing and a miss there. off. Still two and two after the foul ball. in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate and ball for two aboard. Oh, looking for a swinging miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. Runners of the corners here. One away. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. First pitch misses. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. Two on, one out. On the ground to the left and a base hit knocks in a run. boots it, picks himself up an RBI, turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Jackson Merrill digs in now. check swing and he went. And that’s strike one. Check swing. No appeal. That one finds the zone. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Smoked into left. This looks like extra bases. One run across. Here comes Tatis around third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. And now it’s 12 to seven. Good two strike hitting right there, Boog. A bit of a lost start for some, so that was nicely done to beat the odds. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Number 26. Won’t go any further tonight. And he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. now pitching. So they turn things over to the righty number 21. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers. But I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. One out, runner at second. Next is the designated hitter, Raone Lauraniano. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Offense exploding for five so far in the inning here in the top half of the 10th. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s a ball and a strike. late on that fast ball. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him, elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. Two out. [Applause] So now it’s the fourhole hitter Gavin Sheets. And the first pitch misses for ball one. This one ripped but fouled to the right. That one almost got him. Fouls one off. Two and two. popped up Lindor and makes the grab and that is that. But it’s a huge fiveun inning and it gives them the lead. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Padres’s 12 and the Mets seven. Back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Nick Paveta and he has some nasty breaking stuff. Number 27, Nick Petta. Now it’s going to be Jeff McNeel. Jeff McNeel. Just missed. And it’s fouled away. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. On the ground to third. Eglacius fires over to first. One out the bottom of the tenth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Starling Marte getting ready to hit. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. That’s outside now. One and two. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Now only one out remaining. now. And now it’s Jose Siri taking his first at bat of the game after entering on defense. Just missed. Ventos on at second with two down. There’s the strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Pavetta is just one strike away. Misses inside and the count is two and two. And a foul ball. stays alive. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Well, this is a big win on the road and going extras into 10. Uh so hard to pull those out, but I think this team did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the ball game late. When you can do that, it kind of calms everything down, keeps the adrenaline of the opposing team down a bit, and you can steal a win and get out of here happy. 127 your final score for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show.
