Oakland Athletics vs Boston Red Sox – MLB 9/16/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)
Live from the venerable grounds of Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. A great night for baseball. Ahead on the show, it’s the Athletics and the Boston Red Sox. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Boston Red Sox. [Applause] Just a little bit away from first pitch, our starter in this one, Brian Beao. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. And another ball. And a foul ball. Makes the count. Two and one. That one down the line now. A jump throw and they get the out. You’re out. That is catching Jay Lingalers. And now here is Shay Langalers. And that skips in the dirt. One down. Base is empty. And it’s fouled away. The pitch. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s two and one. Right through there for a strike. Well, don’t expect too many more high fast balls. This is a good sinker ball pitcher and sometimes they can make mistakes trying to pitch up in the zone. Look for him to stay down around the knees to be effective. spoils that one and it remains two and two. One out, base is empty. Not close with that one and that’s ball three. And he walked him. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Close pitch there, but you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound. You can’t let it affect you going forward. You’ve got to get out of the inning first and then if you want to be frustrated, take it out in the dugout. Over to first and save. Now Nick Curts, first pitch misses. One ball, no strikes. just missed. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play. But in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. Ripped on a line to center. Raphael brings it in. And there’s two down. Batting fourth, the designated hitter, Brett Rooker. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. Singy, we’re looking at a young lineup here. Not much experience, but they’re going to bring a lot of energy to the field. Yeah, and that’s just it, Boo. We expect this lineup to play hard no matter what. They are an exciting group to watch. And next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Singing when the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Langaliers, the runner at first with two gone. And that is downstairs. And it’s 2 and 0. And that’s outside. Jacob Wilson next to bat for the A’s to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. The A’s strand one. And now the Red Sox get their turn. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Boston and on the hill in this one, Luis Severino. Well, it hasn’t been a great year so far in terms of ERA, but he’s had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness, if you will. We’ll see today if he’s able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses, put himself in a position to bring that RA down because you know in the back of his mind beyond the W. He wants to have a better earn run average. Bottom of the first and stepping in for Boston, Romy Gonzalez and that’s a base hit. So runner aboard to start the inning. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Now it’s Alex Bregman gets the outside corner with that one. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. All right, Alex. Let’s do this. Alex, that one missed. Nobody out. Runner at first. That’s in there. And that is strike two out there on the mound. He’s setting the tone early with the fast ball. 98 mph up on the scoreboard. [Music] Up and in. Two and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ground ball up the middle, dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they can’t get the out. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. That one finds the zone. Strike one. fought off foul. First and second here, no outs. Got him looking and that is a big first out. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. really locked him up and it’s a hitter. It’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in. So, you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. Hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Next to hit, Rob Ref Snider. Fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one. ball in the dirt. Blocked, but no advance from the runners. One out. Runners at first and second. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. One, two. Strike three and that’s two in a row. He had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Bayz. And next for the Red Sox, Carlos Narvz. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. Check swing and he went right. [Applause] In for a strike. And now just one pitch away from surviving the inning. [Applause] fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Top of the second, the matter will be the shorts stop. Jacob Wilson. Jacob Wilson. Beo back to work right through there for a strike. [Applause] That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Woody Keller making the calls behind home for us today. And Boo, something to keep an eye on is how pitchers utilize the top part of the strike zone. We see a lot more of that in today’s game with pitchers going up there with hard stuff. Keller definitely an umpire that isn’t afraid to call strikes up in that part of the strike zone. [Applause] Strike them out. Two two battling here as he fouls it away. bounced up the middle. Fires over to first. One out in the second. 96 right fielder JJ Blade. This is JJ Blade taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. There’s a swing and a miss. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good compliment to that fast ball. One down, base is empty. Popped up. Story corrals it two away. [Applause] Batting seventh, third baseman Daryl Hern. Two down, base is empty. Next up for the A’s, Daryl Hern. In there at the knees for a strike. [Applause] And there’s a foul ball. Two down to foul ball. It stays nothing and two. No score here in the second. And one and two. on the ground to short story. The A’s go quietly and the A’s are gone in order. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here at Fedway, we head to the bottom of the second. digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder number 40 at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. And there’s a ball. One-1. And he hits a ground ball right side. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly to first and he just gets it there in time. One away. Batting seven. Second baseman, Nick Sogard. Here’s the second baseman, Nick Sogard. That misses ball one. One ball, no strike. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. Swinging at a line drive. That’s a base hit into center field. So a man aboard now with one away. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Connor Wong. There goes the runner. Pitch inside. Throw to second. Ow. Usually when you see a team try to steal a base in the early innings, it tells you they want to be aggressive on offense. try to force the defense to make plays and slow them down. That’s exactly what they did right there. So, we’ll see if that caught stealing changes the offensive approach moving forward. And the one swinging a foul straight back that one back up the middle and it gets through and that extends the inning. just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there’s just no one there to knock it down. Here’s the center fielder, Sidon Raphaela. He set a new careerh high in home runs this year. And Sigi, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible. Now, [Applause] And that misses one and0. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. That’s in for a strike. Go to second. Out there. And the inning is over. Well, trying to get into score position, but a great catch and throw to end the inning. That’s the way to pick up the pitcher. back here in Boston. And here is Carlos Cortez. Eddie deals. Cortez goes 5′ 7 in in the eighth spot in today’s lineup. And he was a third round pick back in 2018. And he grounds one to the right side. And that’s just foul. The 02 ball one there. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Batting ninth, second base, Zack Gell. Gellof up next for the A’s. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] That misses the zone. One ball, one strike. One ball, one strike. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. That one ripped. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. So, the batting order turns over. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. He’s 0 for one and takes low from ball one. Two out. Space is empty. That’s outside. And now two and 0 and he takes a strike. Foul ball there. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vlo 2-2 now. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So they go quietly there. We head now to the home half of inning number three. No score. Back now with Venway at the plate. Son Raphaela. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs and ball one and that’s a strike. [Applause] They had a foul ball. and a ball in two strikes. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and it falls. So, a man on base to start the inning. Back to the top of the lineup now at the plate. Romy Gonzalez, one for one. He let off the bottom of the first with a single. Ball one, no strikes. This might be a steal situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Runner on the go. Pitch outside the throw. Tag and he’s out. That goes to show you stealer base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing. Even with big time speed, it’s not easy to catch him. But that was a great catch and throw. Quick, not rushed, and accurate. And another ball. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Applause] And there’s the automatic. [Applause] Swing and a miss and he was fooled. Baya, you got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. And that is low for ball four. Up next for the Red Sox. Made it first with one go. And now it’s Alex Bregman. reached on an infield single his first time. That one misses and that is ball walk. It’s a tough pitch. But in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched. Highfly ball out into left center field. Cortez makes the play. Out number two. Here’s Trevor Story now. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Severino throws to first. He’s Gonzalez back on a dive. Come on, you can do it. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. There’s a swing and a drive. Base hit and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away. He was all over that one. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So, two outs with runners on the corners. Here’s the Boston cleanup hitter, Rob Reed. And that misses off the outside edge. [Applause] and that one is inside. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Two on, two outs. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter off, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Two outs, bases full. Now it’s the DH. Carlos Narvay. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. That one outside. Ball one. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Next pitch misses and the count now two or nothing. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Two outs. Misses with the two and he’s fired three straight outside the strike zone. Base is loaded. Two down. [Applause] Highfly ball down the left field line. Cortez going back. One runs in and it’s off the green monster and it will play. He’s in there. Three run score. Taking a bit of a chance swinging at that three 0 pitch, but nobody is questioning it after multiple runs come home to score on the play. Now standing on second with the double and feeling really good about it. Now it’s the right fielder 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time and that is out of play. [Applause] Man on second, two down. That misses the zone and the count is one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Music] Here’s [Applause] a one, two, two, two in the dirt, but kept close. Laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. Stays alive. [Applause] And at second, gets a piece and stays alive. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. [Applause] Keeps the attack going with a foul ball. Grinding AB right here about to see pitch number 10. Swing and a base hit coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. He’ll score and they lead by four. So a man at first. Joe stepping in for Boston. Nick Sgard one for one with a single so far. Right through there for a strike. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning, and this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can, give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. Severino throws to first and he’s back in there. Four runs already in the frame here in the last half of the third. in the air center field. Butler snags it. That is the inning. So, four runs on four hits, no errors, and a runner left on. Three innings complete. The Red Sox four and the A’s nothing. Start of the fourth. And now the catcher comes up to him. So, Boo, you went to college in this town. What was it like for you being a college student and having the opportunity to bounce over here to Finway Park and see some games? Yeah, in fact, 1990, a couple of college classmates and I, we were in college. We bought standing room tickets and then the next night got a chance to see the Red Sox clinch the East against the White Socks in that sliding catch in the corner by Tom Bansky. The Red Sox would end up losing to the Oakland A’s in the playoffs, but that’s one of the things that I’ll think about in terms of memories from going to college and going to Fenway. Throws to first in time. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts 0 for one so far. What about the fans at Fenway? Would they let you have it from time to time? They’re definitely intelligent baseball fans, which is awesome. They’re not waiting for something to happen. They can smell a big inning or anticipate a situation setting itself up. The A’s yet to pick up a hit here. Base hit left center field. And they have their first base runner since the first inning. And with that kind of power at the plate, they’ll gladly take the single to the opposite field. Designated hitter Brent Brooker. One thing I found that was very cool was making a great play to end the inning and running off the field and getting a standing ovation, even at times when you’re not a player on their team. As long as you’re not winning, they will celebrate and applaud a great play on the field. These fans here, they love and respect baseball. Comes up empty. 02. [Applause] That’s down and in. And they’ll do it again. Mad at first, one away. Yeah, baby. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Nice job behind the plate there. Now batting short stop. And now Jacob Wilson 0 for one. grounded out in his first at bat. This guy makes great contact. One of the best in the game at putting bat on ball. He’s got such quick hands and he’s gaining pitch recognition that keeps him square to the plate and there’s a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time and that produces solid contact consistently. Swanging a ground ball. Story sends it over to first and he has thrown four shut out innings. The A’s strand one. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. [Applause] Back in Boston, here’s the catcher, Connor Wong. [Music] He swings and fouls one off. You know, these Red Sox doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. Pitch count is pretty high and they’ve played at four runs already. So, I think it’s safe to say their game plan is working out pretty well right now. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Luis Severino gives way and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching forward. Bring a young arm out of the bullpen in this spot. Number 58 hasn’t pitched in the last three days. So a man aboard stepping in Son Raphaela and he’s already singled in this game. Checks over to first back safely. Pop foul out of play off to the right. 01 now. Squirts away a little bit. Brother takes off. Swinging a miss. throw to second and he’s out. I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. fouls it off. Still one and two. [Music] Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. on the ground right side and it goes just foul. One down base is empty up the middle lays out but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. He’s in safely and now there’s a runner at first. Up next for the Red Sox. First baseman Romy Gonzalez. So the lineup flips over. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox inside. And that’s ball one. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Just missed. Raphaela over at first with one away. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Caught him looking for the K. Now batting. Here’s Alex. One for two. Alex Breman moved to first and he’s back in safely. Gets the slider in there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Next offering is fouled back. Red and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. One left for the Red Sox, but they’re in front. Four nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top five, John with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, JJ Blade. Beo back to work. and first offering is fouled off. You know, these athletics just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Ref Snider makes the grab. One away. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. [Applause] Hernandez in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. No strike. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. Swings through that one for strike two. The Athletics down by four and we’re at the top of the fifth. And down on strikes he goes. Now five strikeouts for him on the mound. Next up for the ace, Carlos Cortez. Struck out swinging his first time. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. And a foul ball. looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings on the ground to the left. Zips it to first and it’s a one two three inning. Nothing doing there for the A’s. They’re down four nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s Trevor Story. Shortstop Trevor Story outside low and that’s ball one. You know these Red Sox really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to well struck right field and one hops the wall safe at second with a leadoff double everything came together perfectly for him right there I love the approach he had right there with that pitch not trying to do too much but still looking to drive it and that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double runner in scoring position no outs next to Hit Rob Ref Snider. He is struck out and he is walked and a breaking ball misses outside. The 10 swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow right field and no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball man at second. That to right now drops into the glove and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Carlos Narvz. Carlos Narvz digs in now. drove in three last time off. And another chance to put something on the board here [Applause] [Applause] just off the outside edge. Next offering upstairs. Story the runner at second with one away. That one missed. Now three and 0. hits the top of the zone at 98 for a strike. Swinging a ball hit out towards left center field. Butler makes the catch. That’s out number two. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So, a man aboard and now the right fielder. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run in there for strike one. And that’s outside. [Applause] Let’s go. Come on. Knocks that one away and will do it again. And delivers outside. Still two and two after the foul ball. inside. Just missed. That one called just inside, I think. And on the mound, he’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Flying drive and that’s base hit out into center field. Story on his way home. He’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single. It’s 5 nothing right there. Does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Bad at first. Nick Soggar now at the plate just off the outside edge and it’s one and0. [Applause] One run across in the frame so far. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. And another ball movement in the bullpen. Tyler Ferguson up and throwing. Alvarado also getting ready. [Applause] Two outs. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. [Applause] There’s the strike. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] And ball four to a board. Not what he wanted to do right there, Boo. That keeps this inning alive. Puts a runner in scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead. First and second, two outs. Connor Wong up next for the Red Sox. He’s two for two. And that’s outside. And that is ball one. One ball. No strike. [Applause] Out to short. dives but it kicks off his glove. No throw and they don’t get an out on the play. Now batting center fielder Sidan Raphaela. Sidan Raphaela up next for the Red Sox. And that’s through there for a strike. 41. Yes, the strike. That was the sweeper. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Breaking ball misses down and away. [Applause] missed with a change up. Two and two. [Applause] Line drive. Base hit. One run is in now. Two runs score and they’re pulling away. Up by seven now. Gets the job done as he brings home a pair. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Banager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Number 58 won’t go any further and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for the A. So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Tyler Ferguson. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It So the Red Sox lineup turns over. Romy Gonzalez getting ready to hit. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Ball squirts away a little bit. No strike. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. Two on, two outs. And there’s the automatic. [Applause] And they’re all loaded up. First base. You get a walk. And you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. third base. So, they’re all loaded up. Alex Bregman up next for the Red Sox. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That clips a corner. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. So, they’re all loaded up with two outs. Ground ball left side and foul ball. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Ball on there. [Applause] Get on the ground to the right side and that chance handled on to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. So they get three runs in the inning, but they also leave the bases loaded. We’re through five. It’s the Red Sox seven and the A’s nothing. And we’re back here at Fenway Park. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. Clearly down in this ball game. And you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time. and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Whips it to first. Now one gone in the top of the sixth. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler for two in this one. Butler 24 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2018. And that stealed it away. They say it went two balls, one strike. The Red Sox up big in this one. And we’re the top half of the sixth. on the ground right side. Boots it safe at first. No play. We’ll see how they score this. Hard to tell exactly what went wrong right there. That was a fairly routine ground ball, but he just couldn’t get it to stick. And the glove might have taken his eye off it a little early, but regardless, you’re going to have to work around that error. One down. Now the number two hitter Shay Langalers known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Down and away for ball one. That clips the corner. probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. That one inside. Ball two. Butler leads off first with one away. Yeah, that’s fouled off. hit softly on the ground to third. Over to second for one and it’s a double play to end the inning. Make it six shut out innings for him out there now. It’s the Red Sox seven and the A’s nothing. [Applause] Back here at Fenway. Story for the Red Sox. Shortstop Trevor Story. That one close. Rule the ball. Ball one. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] The one two hit hard to the ground and up the middle. Base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting left and next will be the cleanup hitter. Robin Ferguson throws to first. Story back in on the dive. First offering and it just misses that drops in for a strike. going to count one and two. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. And that’s outside. [Applause] [Music] Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Chases the fast up the ladder. Struck him out. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Story back in the dive. [Music] Fly ball down the line. Puts it away for the out. Now it’s the right fielder. Now batting number 40. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs. Swaying at a ball popped in the air. Out to shallow center and it falls. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Having himself a really nice game at the plate. Pitch was on the outside. didn’t go the other way with it, but still a nice job of using the big part of the field to find a hole. No way he hits it that well if he hooks around the baseball there. So stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Two on, two outs. Come on. No. Two to count. Red into center. Butler gliding in towards the infield. Makes the grab on the run. And that is that. Boston strands a pair, but they’re still in control. It’s 7 nothing. It’s a bit of a blowout now, which gives us a bit more freedom here in the booth. I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Sydney, you grew up in the Bay Area. Did you have a favorite player as a kid? Yeah, I love the A’s lineup. I mean, guys like Ricky Henderson, Dave Kingman, Terry Steinback. Um, I mean, you just go on and on. Tony Armis, uh, just some tremendous rosters back then. And I loved as a kid getting on the BART train, the Bay Area Rapid Transit, pulling up right there to the stadium and then going in and watching the game. You also had the pleasure of going over and hitting and taking batting practice at a big leaguer’s house. Who was that? Yeah. Willie McGee, one of the greatest of all time in my opinion. Not at all. In your neighborhood. Yeah. His folks live right down the street from me and that’s where his batting cage was. I used to look out of my backyard down the hill and just dream of one day maybe being able to go over and hit with him. And that dream became a reality when I was drafted by the San Francisco Giants. Only two hits allowed so far tonight, Boo. So, I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. Man at first, nobody out. Next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. That’s a little bit low. Well, the laidoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Little dribbler up along third in there safely. Now, Batty stop. Fortunately, they’ve got a big lead on the scoreboard, so that error shouldn’t hurt too much. But you have to be careful about losing concentration in a game like this. Can be an easy trap to fall into. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Sinki, he’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Outside low one and0. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Right side, and that one finds its way through. And they’re happy to play station to station right here. Base is loaded, nobody out. Right fielder JJ Le. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. Put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. And now Alex Kora is out of the dugout and he will make a move for the bullpen. Brian Beao will depart. Great effort out of him as he exits in line for the win. We’ll tell you about the new pitcher when we get back. Now pitching for the So the Red Sox go to the bullpen, Garrick Crochet. And he’s had three days off since he pitched last. So expect him to be totally rested. I’m sure he’s itching for this opportunity right now. Base is loaded. Nobody out. JJ Blade up next for the A’s. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] And he gets that fast by him upstairs. Base is juiced. No outs. valves that off to the left and will do it again. One, two. That one missed. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with the sweeper and a foul ball. He stays alive. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Hanging in there pretty good against the lefty. Let’s go. Hit in the air center field. He’s got it. Runner tagging from third. Play it home. He’s safe. It’s 71. Oh, right there. He’s definitely looking for more than just a sack fly with the bases loaded and nobody out. But you’ll take it. Now it’s up to the guys coming up behind him to pick up the rest of those runners on base. Now the third baseman, Daryl Hern. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Traffic on the bases with one already in here in the top half of inning number seven. Swinging a foul pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. [Applause] Oh, he hit him. That hit him. And that got him pretty flush. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. And now it’s going to be Carlos Cortez. [Applause] That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. [Applause] And now it’s even up. One-1. All loaded up. All Red Sox in this one. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Crochet gets the strike out. Zack yellow, Zack Yellow. [Applause] Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Rooker at third. Wilson on second. Hernese on at first with two down. Pinch gets away. Not even close there. And the count two and one. Next offering misses down and away. Love how this guy grinds out at bats. I mean, he’s down there at the bottom of the lineup in the nine hole, but he’s worked himself into a really good hitter’s count trying to pick up a two-out RBI. Next offering is in for a strike. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. Two outs. Bases are full [Applause] and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Two outs. Got him. Swinging. So they get one but end up leaving the bases loaded. Midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Red Sox seven and the A’s won. Bottom of the seventh and stepping in for Boston. Conor Wong. Catcher Conor Wong. Come on. Fast ball for a strike at 95. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. The O2. Good job to fight that one off. That’s off the mark. Now one and two. And that’s outside. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Breaking ball misses down and away. Count. That one misses. So a lead off walk. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. Raphael in the box now. No balls in a strike. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. Strike two. This one high in the air to left center. Butler calls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Red Sox. First baseman Romy Gonzalez. So man aboard now it’s going to be Romy Gonzalez. That’s a strike. And now the count is even hit in the air. Right field le two down. So up next, Alex Bregman. Third base. Alex Bregman. swinging a high-fly ball down the right field line. Leay makes the catch and that’s the third out and the Red Sox leave one and they’re on top seven to one. We go to the eighth now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the Lawrence Butler. Crochet back to work. that pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. That one just misses. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. Looks like he’s picked up right where he left off. Now the catcher up to hit Shay Langers. Legal that’s in there and it’s 0 and one. One strike. Top of the zone for a called strike. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. One, two. Next offering down in the dirt, stays alive. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Now batting. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. And first offering is fouled off. on the ground. Two ball. He flips it to second in time. Double play. They can’t seem to break through. Inning over. This one pretty well decided at this point. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the Red Sox seven and the A’s won. Now pitching for the back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 49. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Three, four, five for the whole team. And now Trevor Story. Trevor Story. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. There’s a strike. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. One ball, two strikes. fights that one away. Still one and two. In the air out towards right center. Butler makes his way towards it. Makes the grab after a long run. And there’s one down. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Ref Snider batting with one down, takes a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Brady Basso preparing to come on if needed. Alvarado also throwing. Red. Next offering is downstairs. Right side. Leed hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting designated hitter. Two outs. Base is empty. Carlos Nvit. [Applause] And that one is lifted in the air. And that will end the inning. Back inside Fenway Park. All set to start the ninth in this one. Now the A’s designated hitter Brent Rooker. [Applause] swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center and there’s one down. Well, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. [Applause] Wilson stands in now and watches strike one. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. [Applause] The Red Sox up big in this one here in the top of the ninth. That’s too low and count one and two. [Applause] That one is blasted left field towards the monster into the monster seats and gone. He jacks that one out to left. His 13th home run of the season. It’s 72. So, Singi, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives. Hits going over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation of the ball. Get out of the ballpark. For him, it’s kind of a mistake. But you know what? When you have such a good approach, every now and then you’re going to run into one. Leay in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Owen two now. And that’s a strike out looking. And they’re down to their last out. Now batting third base. Daryl Hern up next for the A’s. sends it to center and that’s going to do it. And that is the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 72 your final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long
