Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB game highlights (September 17, 2025)
Hey, welcome to Cubs baseball here on Marquee Sports Network. The Cubs one win away from the postseason as they go for the sweep and try and clinch a playoff spot in Pittsburgh. Matthew Boyd on the mound. Good sweatuits. Boyd taking the bump. Say Suzuki back in the lineup. Back from illness for the first time in a week he’ll be out there playing as the Cubs try to clinch a postseason birth for the first time since 2020. A win and they’re in. If they lose, a Diamondbacks loss will do the job. Diamondbacks and Giants a little bit later on. Let’s check out the Cubs lineup brought to you by Benny’s Beverage Depot. If you can’t find it at Vinny’s, it’s probably not worth drinking. It’ll go Bush her and half by Asteros, Suzuki, Petro, Armstrong, Swanson, Maguire, and Shaw. That group has gone nine and three against the Pirates this year, and they will take on Johan Odo. that big right-hander. He’s 27 years old from Havana, Cuba. He missed all of last year. Tommy John surgery and so far the fast ball has been a very effective weapon for him. Opposing batters just two out of 28 with a bunch of swing and miss. 3-2 and that’s too high and it’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. That one way high and over the head of Nicoer. Down to second goes Michael Bush on the wild pitch to 2-1. Line drive into center field and that’s a base hit. Canario will pick it up and fire it in. Bush will stop at third. Nico her stays hot and they’re at the corners. That’s a B and a run will score. Here comes Michael Bush and it is one to nothing. He just started and stopped and everybody kind of looked around like that’s a B, right? Isn’t that a B? That’s a B. Yeah. What is happening here? Not sure what uh what caused him to stop. It’s like he heard something. I wonder if he heard the Wonder if somebody in the crowd yell time out or something. Available with two swing and a highf fly ball right field that’s back that’s on its way gone. Ian Hap a two-run homer and the Cubs have jumped out front. It is three to nothing here in the first. The Pittsburgh kid launches. Well, on a day where they’re looking to clinch a playoff spot, they give Matthew Boyd at least a three-run lead before he takes the mound. They’re still not out. And uh ODO checking a lot of boxes in this inning. Walk, single, walk, home run. Home run replay brought to you by Toyota, the official vehicle of the Chicago Cubs. and half continues his run of success here at PNC Park. That’s 37 consecutive games in this ballpark that he has reached base. It’s his 23rd home run in that stretch. That’s hammered right field by Steros. Forget it. And it’s gone. Back to back and it is 4 nothing. An absolute rocket from Mo Bowler and four zip Cubs. Wow, did that get out of here in a hurry. Yeah, that ball’s going to end up in the Alagany. Home run number two for Basos. You’ll recall his first big league home run came at Wrigley the other day when he hit it to Anthony Rizzo in the left field bleachers. You can tell by his reaction, a no doubter. And this home run brought to you by Hefty, Hefty, Hefty, ultra strong, ultra low price. Bottom of the first, the Cubs have jumped out to a 4 nothing lead. If the Cubs win, they are in the postseason. How about Pirates lineup brought to you by Ford Triolo Gonzalez and Fam McCutchen, Bart Canario, York Flores making his major league debut, and Cam Deainy. What a year it’s been for this guy. Yeah, most since 2019 in both starts and innings, 17 quality starts leads the club tied for 12th in MLB. 2-2 change up hit in the air and left field for Hap. Here comes the 3-1 and that one misses down and in. So Fam will reach with two outs. Fine drive over the leaping Swanson out into left field. Half will pick it up and out to a board with two out. Five all center field. PCA is back. He’s back some more. He’s looking and that one is gone. Joey Bart to dead center. And just like that, the Pirates are within one. Matthew with an erra approaching six over his last five starts and the long ball has been certainly a part of that this inning. Two quick outs and then the walk to Fam to get things started. So the walk, a little soft base hit and then Bart unloads. Just the third home run for Joey Bart this year. The Pirates are dead last in Major League Baseball in long balls. That’s only the 45th home run they’ve hit here in their home ballpark. Nothing. Now it’s a one-run game. 3-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out. Base hit right field on a 3-2 offering and Deainy is aboard. Line drive into center field. That’s a base hit. Triolo smokes that into center. Backto back hits and the Pirates in business threatening with runners at first and second and nobody out. And that one actually hit him and now they’re loaded up. It’s you. It’s like I got smoked. Popped up on the infield. Swanson it under it. Infield fly. Dansby has it. Three and two. And he walked him and walks in a run. Boy, not sharp here today. Triolo at third, Gonzalez at second, McCutchen at first. Three and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he went with the change up and he fanned him zone here today. 32 swang and a miss struck him out. That’s when he needed it most. It’s a pirate team that strikes out a bunch. They have the fourth highest strikeout rate in the majors. Flores at second. That is in there. Got him. And no argument from Triolo. Liner towards third. Nice play Deain. He gets up and throws him out. Stole extra bases from Matt Shaw. [Music] Third baseman on third baseman Crime there. Nice play on the backhand and a good strong throw. And Michael swinging and missing here. It’s a strike out. There’s two away. Swing and a miss. And McCutchen chasing that one. [Music] Gonzalez at first. Two down. Here comes swing and a miss. Struck him out and Bart is gone. Tommy Fam single McCutchen and then Joey Bart three-run homer. Savali gets the strike out. York is gone and two away. [Music] Need to throw him a strike if they’re going to swing at that one. I mean, that’s chin high. Remember the old uh the original Y5 Jack short hop backhanded. Nico her. What a play. There’s your gold glover. That one line and then dropped. Ramirez picks it up. Safe at first. Stanby Swanson. And Ramirez saying my bad. There goes the runner. And that throw gets into center field. Swanson is going to get up and race to third. So now that was ball four. Wow. So, Bart makes a throw he doesn’t need to make and he throws it into center field. Second error of the inning, third error committed by the Pirates here in the last two innings. So, Dansby does not get a steal, but the error on Bart. The Cubs with a win today would clinch a postseason birth. [Music] That is ripped right field and right at York. He makes the grab. Swanson will tag. He’ll come in to score and BCH has delivered the go-ahead run. It’s 54 Cubs on top. Ground ball the middle of the base hit. Here comes Shaw around third. He’s coming in to score. How about Ian had third run batted end of the day. Some insurance makes it 64. Insurance runs. Uh, we love them and they’re brought to you by Gallagher. Helping you face your future with confidence and have not wasting any time. Line drive. Fair ball down the right field line. Here comes Nico in to score. Half to third. He’ll stop there. JT with an RBI single and it’s 74. Justin Turner comes through. The Cubs have scored three here in the six. Making the Pirates pay for their sins. They’ve been kicking the ball around. They’ve committed three errors today, including a very costly one to get this inning started. And despite not having an at bat in a week, no worries, JT really good in the pinch. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a good start to the bottom of the six for Aaron Savali [Music] this moment out to left center field and Hat makes a nice running and catch. Good grab by Ian on the ground to short. Swanson and Dansby throws out Tommy Fam. Savali pitches around the error. See you later. Struck him out. McCutchen is gone. Talked about Aaron Savali and all the different looks he has. This time he opts for the curve ball. Drops it over the inside corner. A frustrated McCutchen has to take the lock of Shane. Two-2 bounce to the right side. Her they get the out there and Cruz beats the wrap at first. Two down. 3-2 in the air right field. Alcantara and Kev makes the grab. More good work from Aaron Savali. 303. And her will take his base. Pitch to Hap. And that is ball four. Comes with take any type of insurance they can get their hands on. Those pinch hit opportunities on the ground through the left side. That’s a base hit. Corner around third. He’s in to score. Turner’s done it again. And it is 84 Cubs. [Applause] mentioned when Justin came up there last time he had not had a plate appearance in a week but uh always ready the veteran having himself a nice day off the bench couple RBI knocks who started the game as the DH with a big home run in the first and now JT productive filling in for Moises nobody out man at first and there’s one away [Music] up top with the cheese. The one-1 lifted in the air right field BCH out. Alcantra in and Kevin makes the catch. Free two to Fam on the ground. Backhanded by Swanson. Takes his time. Fires a strike and the Cubs are three outs away from the playoffs. Pomearance gets out of it. We’ll head to the ninth. Actually play for the Pirates. That’s drilled to center. Pete Co Armstrong settles under it and there’s one away. That’s the one kind of cloud hanging over this center field. PCA right there. He’s got it. And it’s out number two. The Cubs one out away. And fittingly, the Cubs top defender securing the first couple of outs here in the ninth. Lot of Cub fans in the ballpark and the entire team right up on the edge of the railing getting ready to rush the field. Wait in the dugout. 3-2 in the air left field. There’s hat. He’s got it. Ball game. The Cubs are headed to the postseason. For the first time since 2020, the Cubs are going to the playoffs. And fittingly enough, it ends in the hands of Ian Hat, the kid from Pittsburgh, the longest tenure Chicago athlete with a huge day. And it comes back in the playoffs. A lot of fight they showed today as a cool day. Yeah, boy. You know, we were walking back last night and and I believe this is exactly how I phrase. I don’t see any way that the Cubs don’t win tomorrow. I was almost proven wrong. The the Pirates responded to that four spot the Cubs put up in the first. Matthew Boyd didn’t have his best day, but that the Cubs just had a little too much here today and managed to to win it on the field. And bully for them, right? It’s much more fun to to get the win and claim it as opposed to having to wait to see how the Diamondback game plays out this afternoon. I love the measured response, right? Just high fives, handshakes, hugs. Good job, fellas. But the the vibe I’m getting from this is like there’s more work to be done here. We’re not going to lose our minds over claiming this playoff spot. We we want more. So, the hugs and the congratulations. And what a day for the Cubs. Back to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. [Music]

Boyd may be running out of steam for this year but he is good. A nice piece of the rotation next year. But for this year's wild card games, he may not be a good option.
How about another World Series?????!!!!!!!!!!!

WAY TO GO GUYS!!!!! KEEP THAT MOMENTUM GOING INTO THE PLAYOFFS!¡!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
The Announcers are Obsessed with Tagging Every Hit, Every Catch, Every Run and Every Stolen Base with a Commercial….Ridiculous..=))
I liked the way the team congratulated one another but didn’t act as though it was a big deal. Shows that they are hungry for a lot more and are not satisfied with just making the playoffs. Congrats guys!
You beauties
Go Cubs
Go Cubs go
Jobs Not Done" Lets Go Cubs!
Good luck in the playoffs go out to the Chicago Cubs.
Mo Ballesteros reminds me Patrick Daniel Bourque who played for the cubs back in the 70's
Go Cubs Go, believe your Power 🎉
If I was Paul Skenes I would request a trade…to the Cubs.
LFG CUBBIES
That was almost a disaster, I wonder if Boyd is getting tired. Great job guys, great job Marquee bringing us the action. Will be with you for the postseason as well. Go Cubs Go
Boyd and Horton have been great this year. Great to see PCA out of the slump and Happ delivering big. Ballesteros was a great pick up, as well as Castro. Good job boys.
C.O.G.R.A.T.U.L.A.T.I.O.N.S

that was one of the most hilariously obvious balks of all time
Next task is secure the wild card top position and then beat the Brew Crew and take 1st place!
Lets make another run cubbies
Adding to the satisfaction, the Dodgers haven't clinched yet. They probably will, but they have a tough finish with Arizona still very much in the WC race and Seattle who are also leading their division but haven't clinched either.
Congrats Cubs!
We're in the playoffs, that's all that matters. We get hot and win the first series, the World Series becomes a real possibility and anything can happen.
Only right Ian Happ catches the last out
It great they clinched a wild card…but why settle…4 and half behind Brewers is catchable… Reds up next…let's go after that division title!!!
Hey, spitball lobbers!…. save your energy for a real life. Let other people have theirs. Life is about celebrating the NOW, not caring who mans the peanut gallery or spews jealousy out of the side of their smart mouths. Nice going, Cubs, Counsell and all. Enjoy, Cub fans!
Good win! Lotsa empty seats at PNC stadium.
JT is clutch. 🔥
They are peaking at the right time, and a sweep. Go Cubbies!!!
