How much of Miami Dolphins’ struggles fall on Mike McDaniel? | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

WERE SEVERAL DOLPHINS PLAYERS WHO’VE BEEN ASKED THE QUESTION AND YOU CAN TELL, I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S COMING IT’S ALMOST WORD OF THE EXACT SAME WAY. HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH THE OUTSIDE NOISE? WHAT’S YOUR REACTION TO THE OUTSIDE NOISE ABOUT MIKE MCDANIEL? WHETHER IT WAS JAYLEN, WADDLE, ALEC ENGEL. THERE WERE 5 OR 6, WE COLLECTED THE QUOTES AND POSTED THEM LAST NIGHT SO IT’S BECOME A THING NOW. YEAH, AND I KNOW THEY SAY THEY TRY NOT TO BE DISTRACTED, BUT HOW DO YOU IGNORE? BECAUSE IT’S NOT LIKE ANY OTHER TEAM. CURRENTLY IS DEALING WITH THIS OPEN DISCUSSION TO THE POINT WHERE THE COACH IS BEING ASKED ABOUT IT, PLAYERS ARE BEING ASKED ABOUT IT, IT IT HAS TO BE A THING. IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING BECAUSE IT’S DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING ANYONE ELSE IS DEALING WITH. YEAH, I I MEAN IT IT IS A THING WE KNOW THE BUSINESS. I FEEL BAD FOR MIKE MCDANIEL. HE, HE LOOKS STRESSED OUT TO ME THERE. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, I, I’VE KNOWN HIM FOR A LONG TIME. OF COURSE, HE WORKED UNDER THE SHANAHANS, HE LOOKS STRESSED OUT AND WORN OUT AND YOU COULD SAY WHAT YOU WANT AND HE’S NOT PAYING ATTENTION. BUT YOU KNOW, THAT THAT HE IS, HE KNOWS WHAT’S GOING ON. HE’S GOING HOME AND HERE AND HIS WIFE GO LIKE, HEY, WHAT’S GOING ON? I’M A LITTLE WORRIED, RIGHT? I MEAN, COME ON. SO HE’S TRYING TO PUT HIS BEST FOOT FORWARD. I THE THERE, LIKE, I IT’S NOT PERFECT DOWN IN THERE IN MIAMI. I GET IT AND MIKE, MCDANIELS, PROBABLY APPROACHED, AND DONE SOME THINGS THAT I’D GO. I DON’T KNOW IF I WOULD HAVE DONE IT THAT WAY, BUT I DON’T KNOW IF I’M HERE AT THE SPOT RIGHT NOW TO SIT HERE AND GO. I WE’RE READY TO FIRE, MIKE MCDANIEL, I DON’T I I DON’T LOOK AT IT. I DON’T THINK THAT’S FAIR. I REALLY DON’T. YOU KNOW I MEAN FIRST OFF WE’RE TALKING, HE TOOK THE JOB IN 2022. THEY WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS YEAR 1 AND HE HAD A DEAL WITH A QUARTERBACK WHO WHAT COULDN’T REALLY PLAY THAT WHOLE YEAR, AND THEY STILL GOT TO THE PLAYOFFS YEAR 2, THEY GO TO THE PLAYOFFS, THEY HAVE THE SECOND BEST RECORD IN THE AFC. LAST YEAR’S YEAR 3, THEY DON’T GO TO THE PLAYOFFS, THEY MISS OUT BY A GAME ALSO, WITHOUT THEIR QUARTERBACK WHOSE INJURY PRONE THAT THE ORGANIZATION JUST IS GOING TO DO EVERYTHING FOR HE DIDN’T PLAY 6 GAMES, SO HE MISSED 4, HE MISSED 6. 1 OF THOSE YEARS, THEY MADE THE PLAYOFFS WHEN THEY DIDN’T. THERE’S BEEN A TON OF MISTAKES DOWN THERE IN MIAMI THAT I WOULD SIT THERE AND GO. THEY GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH MIKE MCDANIEL, THEY DIDN’T TRADE. HE DIDN’T ADD TRADE FOR BRADLEY CHUBB AND GIVE THEM ALL THIS MONEY AND GET NOTHING IN RETURN. HE DIDN’T? HE LIKE TYREEK HILL. THAT WAS THE FRONT OFFICE. YEAH, THERE’S SOME STUFF THERE. YOU GOT TO DEAL WITH. I MEAN A LOT JAYLEN. RAMSEY. OH WAIT, HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE IN JACKSONVILLE. HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE IN LA. HE GOT TO MIAMI. OH GUESS WHAT? HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE THERE AND WHEN THINGS GOT BAD. OH BUT THAT’S MIKE. MCDANIELS FAULT, THERE’S A I CAN KEEP GOING LAUNDRY LIST, RIGHT? SO I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY HE’S BEEN PUT AT THE FRONT HERE OF LET’S FIRE THEM WHEN I GO. THOSE ARE ALL CHRIS GREER. THEY’RE ALL CHRIS GREER AND HE’S DONE EVERYTHING TO, TO RUIN THE TEAM BECAUSE HE LOVES STARS, AND HE’S JUST GOING TO STAR STAR STAR STAR, AND I WON’T SAY WHAT I USUALLY SAY AS IN THEIR STAR EFFORTS, WE KNOW THAT AND THEY PAID A QUARTERBACK AND GAVE THEM MONEY THAT NOBODY ELSE IN FOOTBALL, WOULD THEY NEGOTIATED AGAINST THEMSELVES AND WENT? HEY TUA. YOU WANT 40 MILLION? NO, NO WE DON’T WANT TO GIVE YOU 40. WE’LL GIVE YOU 42 KNOW YOU WANT 42. NOW WE’LL GIVE YOU 48. THEY NEGOTIATING THEMSELVES AGAINST A GUY WHOLE BECAUSE HE CAN’T HOLD IN THE BALL IN THE POCKET, BUT WE GOT TO JUSTIFY. WE PICKED HIM A NUMBER 10 BECAUSE I’M THE GM, AND I PICKED THE RIGHT QUARTERBACK. SO LOOK THE TEAM’S GOOD. I PICKED THE RIGHT GUY, SO THERE’S A LOT OF THINGS THERE THAT I JUST GO. THAT’S NOT MIKE MCDANIEL, THAT’S THE ORGANIZATION OF THE DOLPHINS. AND THAT’S WHERE I DON’T THINK IT’S FAIR. 2 THINGS NUMBER 1, HE TOOK THAT JOB AND HE KNEW OR SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT. THE DOLPHINS HAVE A HISTORY OF DYSFUNCTION. YEAH I KNOW THEY DO THAT’S HARD THOUGH, YOU KNOW, YOU DON’T GET A LOT OF SHOTS ALL THE TIME. SO THIS IS A MESSAGE. TO ANY COORDINATOR. YEAH, WHEN THAT WINDOW IS OPEN. IT MAY CLOSE BUT YOU MAY REGRET HAVING GONE THROUGH THAT WINDOW WHEN IT OPENS BECAUSE AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF NAMES. WE COULD LIST OF GUYS WHO WOULD SAY, I NEVER SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE JOB WHERE I DID BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT AND IT WASN’T. WHAT’S THE SAYING WHEN YOU DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, YOU DON’T CHANGE THE DEVIL, THE DEVIL CHANGES, YOU AND DON’T THINK YOU’RE GOING TO BE THE GUY THAT GOES IN THERE. IT’S THE SAME ATTITUDE THAT SOME COACHES HAVE ABOUT PLAYERS. PLAYERS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM. EVERYWHERE IS GONE. WELL, I’LL BE THE 1. YEAH, I’LL BE THE 1. TO CHANGE IT. IT’S CONFIDENCE THAT BORDERS ON HUBRIS, THAT BECOMES DELUSION. THAT MAKES A COACH THINK. I AM THE SECRET INGREDIENT TO CHANGING EVERYTHING. SO HE TOOK THAT JOB AND I REMEMBER THE FACETIME HE DID WITH TUA BECAUSE I’M THINKING IS 2 OR REALLY THE ANSWER, LIKE NEW COACH WANTS HIS OWN QUARTERBACK. THIS ISN’T INHERENT. ING WHEN JIM MOORE GOT FIRED AND TONY, DUNIE GOT HIRED. AND IT’S A NO-BRAINER AND I REMEMBER WE BUT WE WERE KIND OF LIKE MAN, HE’S REALLY ALL IN WITH 2. I’M KIND OF SURPRISED. HE’S ALL IN WITH SECOND POINT. HAVE BEEN SOFT AND THAT’S JUST NOT ME. THAT’S JORDAN BROOKS. AND I THOUGHT WAS NAMED A CAPTAIN THIS YEAR BY THE TEAM WOULD CHANGE TRYING TO DO. THEY HAVE BEEN SOFT, THEY’VE DEVELOPED A REPUTATION AND I’M NOT SAYING THEY ARE, I’M JUST REITERATING WHAT HAS COME FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE, RIGHT? AND THAT STICKS TO THE GUY WHO SETS THE TONE AND THE PROBLEM CHRIS IS THAT VERY CHILL. NONCHALANT KIND OF TOO LATE TO TURN AROUND. I HEAR YOU. ALL RIGHT. THAT’S A PROBLEM. WELL, WHAT I WOULD SAY A LITTLE TO THAT RIGHT IS FIRST OFF SOME OF THOSE PLAYERS THERE HAD FIT THAT MOLD OF WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. THEY CAME DOWN THERE TO JUST BE A PART OF THE STAR SHOW. OH WAIT, WE GOT TO BE TOUGH. OH, BUT I JUST CAME DOWN FOR BEING COOL IN MIAMI AND GETTING MONEY AND I WANTED TO BE IN THE FAME AND EVERYWHERE. AND EVERYBODY, FAMOUS IN AMERICA IS IN MIAMI, I WANT TO BE DOWN THERE IN THE MIX AGAIN. I DON’T KNOW IF I LIKE PUT THAT ALL ON TO ON ON, UH, MIKE MCDANIEL. I MEAN HE DIDN’T DRAFT CHRISTIAN WILKINS TO WHERE HE WAS A PRETTY GOOD PLAYER AND THEY DON’T SIGN HIM TO A SECOND YEAR CONTRACT. HE DIDN’T DRAFT SOME OF THESE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN THAT HAVEN’T BEEN WORTH THE DAMN AND THEY CAN’T BE TOUGH THAT WAY. SO I DON’T THINK HE’S ALWAYS BEEN PUT WITH THE CULTURE THERE AND LIKE, I HEAR YOU TOOK THE JOB. BUT ALSO YOU AND I BOTH KNOW SOMETIMES LIKE IT’S SOMETIMES IT’S YOUR ONLY OPTION AND YOU CAN’T PASS IT UP OR YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO GET A JOB AGAIN. SO IT’S TOUGH. IT’S TOUGH THAT WAY. THAT’S WHERE I I CAN’T TOTALLY BLAME HIM THERE BUT I GENERALLY I JUST LOOK AT IT AND GO KNOW. LIKE, I, I UNDERSTAND THE RULES AND THE WAY THE WORLD IS IN THE NFL RIGHT NOW, BUT I THINK IT’S A LITTLE HARSH ON MIKE MCDANIEL. LIKE I SAID, IT’S PLAYOFFS, IT’S PLAYOFFS, IT’S QUARTERBACK. WHO THROWS IT 2 YARDS. IT’S QUARTERBACK WHO WE JUST HEARD A TEAMMATE ON THE OTHER TEAM IN THE COLTS. GO HE GETS SCARED AT THE FIRST GUYS, NOT OPEN, AND THEN THEY STILL ARE COMPETITIVE AND MAKE THAT HAPPEN. AND ALSO, HE LIKE FOOTBALL. RING INVENTED OFFENSE IN WATCH IN THE GAME, THE LAST 3 OR 4 YEARS. SO THAT’S WHERE I DON’T LOVE IT. I UNDERSTAND THE ENVIRONMENT, I UNDERSTAND THE CRITICISM, BUT I I DON’T THINK WE’RE AT FIRE, MIKE MCDANIEL. FIRST, I’D BE MORE BEFORE JUST ME THOUGH. I THINK I I I I THINK, I THINK THAT THEY BOTH ARE ON VERY THIN ICE RIGHT AND YOU KNOW, HERE HERE’S THE OTHER REALITY, IT GOES BACK TO HE TOOK THE JOB. YOU MENTIONED, THE CULTURE IN MIAMI. WELL AGAIN, HE’S HE’S IN A POSITION WHERE HE HE KNOWS WHO HE’S GOING TO WORK WITH, HE KNOWS THE JOB. HE’S TAKING AND HE COULD HAVE STAYED IN SAN FRANCISCO AND CONTINUE TO BE THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND WAITED FOR ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY. IT’S NOT LIKE ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE 49ERS ARE GOING TO BECOME A CRAP. TEAM KNOW, I HEAR YOU. YOU CAN’T LEVERAGE THAT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR POSITION TO HEAD COACHING JOB AND SECONDLY, GOD, WHAT WAS MY NEXT POINT? OH. OH. THIS GETS BACK TO KNOWING THE DYSFUNCTION, THINK ABOUT THIS IN THE AFTER BRIAN FLORES FILED A LANDMARK AGAINST STEPHEN ROSS, THAT INCLUDED THE ALLEGATION. THAT STEPHEN ROSS WENT TO BRIAN FLORES AND OFFERED HIM A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS TRYING TO TANK. FOR JOE BURROW, NOT TUA. BUT JOE BURROW DURING THE 2019 SEASON, I MEAN, AT A MINIMUM, DON’T YOU TAP THE BRAKES? DON’T YOU SAY? DO I REALLY WANT TO GO WORK FOR THIS GUY? I KNOW. BUT SEAN PAYTON WAS GOING DOWN THERE AND BRIAN FLORES TRIED TO CHANGE THE CULTURE. IT’S HARD TO DO IT WHEN THE POWERS OF B POWERS TO BE ABOVE, YOU WON’T LET THE CULTURE CHANGE BECAUSE IT IT’S GOING TO INFRINGE ON THEIR LITTLE TERRITORY. AH WAIT, I’M UP HERE WITH THE OWNER IN THE BOX AND HE’S TRYING TO CHANGE THINGS AND MAKE ME DO SOMETHING ELSE. GET HIS ASS OUT OF HERE AND FIRE HIM. WE’LL BRING IN THE NEXT GUY WHO’S GOING TO LISTEN TO ME, AND THAT’S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE DOWN IN MIAMI. AND THAT’S WHERE I, I FEEL FOR MIKE MCDANIEL A LITTLE BIT. SEAN PAYTON WASN’T GOING DOWN THERE TO COACH TUA. HE WAS GOING DOWN THERE TO COACH TOMMY. WELL YEAH, YEAH. THAT’S THAT’S THE THING THAT BRIAN FLORES LAWSUIT UP AND WHAT A WEIRD OFFSEASON THAT WAS CUZ THERE AREN’T MANY PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THAT 1. AND PEOPLE THOUGHT WE WERE MAKING IT UP OR JUST OTHERWISE MISINFORMED AND THEN BOOM HALL OF FAME WEEKEND THAT YEAR THE CRAP HIT THE FAN FOR THE DOLPHINS AND THE LEAGU

  1. SPOT ON. GRIER is the biggest issue here. And he needs to be held accountable. He has a way of sitting in the shadows while McDaniel takes the blame. McDaniel has to go too I believe you have to clean house. But it is definitely not all on McDaniel. Grier needs to go and feel the heat

  2. Majority of blame is certainly Grier, but McDaniel has not been able to make any adjustments since the Bills and McDermott have figured out how to stop his flashy offense. Now every team in the NFL has also figured it out and he has nothing to fall back on. Tua is not talented enough to run any other style of offense than what they did in 2023. And as good as it was that year, it still wasn’t enough to beat the good teams. So Grier and McDaniel need to be fired and Tua needs to be cut. The faster they do that, the faster they can focus on finding a franchise QB. Until then, it will never be good enough to make a playoff run. Go Bills🦬💪🏻

  3. Really like you, Chris Simms. You speak really well–don't let anyone fool you. You bring with your NFL experience (BTW, were you part of the Tampa Bay SB team?) an authenticity that I really have not found anywhere else.

  4. This all starts with Ross, Brady, Payton deal that cost Miami draft picks and that brought in McDaniel in the first place. McDaniel was supposed to be a place holder. Turned out, he was pretty good. He showed that Tua wasn't as bad as everyone thought. Chris Grier keeps over paying guys to come in for a season, maybe two. We've had 3 defensive Coaches now. There is no continuity. Tua feels hurried all the time because the offensive line has been bad. I'm sure any QB would be the same result. I think you have to ride it out this season. See if they can some how Bengal this thing. If Miami can some how win 9, give them another year. If not, I think maybe you start with firing Grier. I think McDaniels needs to hire an Offensive coach to call plays and he needs to oversee the whole thing. He is trying to call plays and be the head coach. It's dumb. The defenses have caught on to his schemes.

  5. I definitely would fire Greir before McDaniel, but, imo both need to go. The team did not show up to play against Indy. That has nothing to do about Greir. The fact that the team was not good enough or pissed enough to beat middle of the road New England in Miami, reflects upon Both Greir and McDaniels. Neither one is doing there job well.

  6. This is a question as you guys are the only ones who address corruption. My question is the Brady situation, why aren't owners concerned? He is calling bears game then the following week his raiders that he appears to be coaching as well, is playing. I'm not saying he's dishonest BUT it creates a situation for potential advantage for raiders. Why? Excuse my ignorance as I'm in Australia and have only followed NFL for about 10yrs…go buccs!

  7. I genuinely don’t understand how Dolphins fans have been lying to themselves for years that Tua is a good starting QB in the NFL. He’s awful. Complete embarrassment. Their front office and coaching is a problem too but I distinctly remember watching games in the 2022 & 2023 seasons where dolphins fans would make the most ridiculous claims for why Tua was a very good QB and the Dolphins were legit contenders no matter how obvious it was they choked against any actual good teams. Tua’s not a good QB. He wasn’t before the injury and he’s not now.

  8. Grier has given every coach he's had everything they asked for even if it gutted the team which they've done every single time which is why they lose every good player they draft because they over pay for the players they want, Adam Geise, Brian Flores, Mike McDaniel

  9. People always say Tua would play better, if he had a better O-line. But the issue is on the plays that he's supposed to make, in spite of his bad offensive line. In the case of McDaniel, the problem is that he doesn't adjust his game plan. If he at least tried to have more plays that were for the receivers outside instead of down the middle all the time and use the tight end more for example and also get the running backs to run a little harder maybe catch the ball and that kind of stuff then even if we lost at least we could respect him more

  10. WTH is Chris Simms talking about! McDaniels can't get plays in on time. He doesn't run the ball or allow the running game to develop, and he was the "running game coordinator" at San Francisco. What sense does that make? He doesn't manage the game properly and hasn't utilized some of the good young talent they do have. McDaniels is not a leader of men, and that's what this team needs!!
