Tonight’s episode, we have some fun things to talk about. We are just a little under two days now from hockey uh slightly returning in a in a form. Uh the Jets will have, of course, this upcoming uh prospect showdown, which, you know, I I think some folks are excited for. Me personally, I definitely am. It’ll be two games over this weekend. uh Jets versus uh you know the Suns in one game and then uh Winnipeg I also believe will be taking on Montreal. So this should be a fun time. Uh I think you know we’re all a little bit excited at least for the return of hockey. Yes, it’s not the exact form that maybe you’d expect but you know what this is a nice little tide over until preseason and really the start of the NHL season in just a couple of weeks. I want to talk about you know who to keep an eye out for. Uh setting some pre-eason expectations. you know, what do we want from preseason? What are we hoping for? And also want to talk about maybe one of the big X factors this season, Cole PFetti. Before we dive into all the fun nitty-gritty though, did want to let you know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting FanDuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. Now, let us start off with the prospect showdown. This is going to be a fun time. Uh I’m personally looking forward to it. And you know, I talked about the Jets roster uh that they are sending. By and large, I think you can kind of divide it into two different groups, right? So, at forward, the Jets are bringing pretty much everyone developed in house. On defense, for the most part, this group is really lots of camp invites. Uh which I find interesting. Uh you know, Winnipeg spent a fair bit this off season investing in the Moose. And so I would imagine that a camp invite would probably be to be uh bringing in some competition perhaps to get a look for maybe the third moose pairing. Right. Intriguingly, you know, one of the names that I thought immediately stood out just for like blood bloodline sake uh is Connor Walton. Walton, I believe, is Kieran’s brother. Uh which is pretty cool to see him actually get um a chance maybe to to impress and you know, play alongside his brother. Uh you don’t really see that too often, but uh you know, of course Connor and Kieran uh pretty talented family, right? Uh pretty fun to see them actually doing pretty well. And uh you know, I think Connor used to play for Sbury if I recall correctly. Uh I want to say he was there for a little bit. So nice to see him with the prospects group. Uh we also have guys like Zlotty and uh you know, Sward who actually played for the Moose and ADS last season. Obviously, you know, these are kind of your so-called returning veteran pros. Uh, but you’ve got all sorts of young guys, you know, Seth Frier, Ree Hamilton, Caleb Hartman. U and then the actual dra drafted Jets prospects. Uh, Salammonson and Angle. Angle might be the one that I’m going to be keeping the closest eye on. Uh, I I’d know the least about him generally speaking. I’ve heard that he’s a pretty s, you know, smooth skating uh USHL two-way defender, solid offensive instincts, can jump into the rush, has decent puck protection, but I don’t know that much more beyond them. So, this will be like the first time I’m really getting uh some good insight into what his game is like and, you know, whether he might project one day to be some sort of procaliber defender. At forward, I mean, this group is not super surprising. uh you’ve got, you know, mostly uh draft picks from the past couple of years. You know, it’s interesting to see that Danny Zulkin is actually in this group because Jenin obviously has had a bit of a a rough and tumble last couple of seasons. Injuries and I think some struggles to adapt to the pro level have kind of held him back from really having a consistent season. So, u if there’s a guy that I’m really hoping shines this camp and can kind of get his season started off in the right way, it’s probably fighting for his place with the Moose. Uh not that he’s going to be benched necessarily, but he’s probably looking at starting the year off in bottom six duty. And so, you know, for Zilkin, I think this is really a crucial season to try and get his development track back on course because he’s still very young. you know, I think he’s only like 21 and, you know, he’s just a player that’s very easy to root for. You know, he’s very likable. He’s got a great foundation. I think in terms of being a brand ambassador, he’s done a great job. So, I just hope the world for him and that he actually finds some success. Uh we’re also going to get some of our real first looks at guys like Martin and Cloutier from this first uh draft group, of course, this past year. Um, Claudier and Martin are both, you know, probably not going to to pop off crazy numbers for the Jets. Uh, kids. I I would say that their overall, you know, scoring in the juniors has been modest, but I think with Martin, he’s one of those longerterm projects where you look at his rapid development and his ability to potentially improve very quickly in the same way that maybe Lowry once did, and I think that there’s a lot to like in his game. Uh Martin already has a lot of the defensive and two-way traits that are projectable as prolevel skills. And I think for how the Jets tend to like their bottom six, a Martin type fits a lot. Claudier could potentially have some uh room to uh also grow his offensive game. He’s put up, you know, respectable numbers in junior. Uh you know, he’s put up like, you know, what 20 odd goals this past season. So he can clearly score. And I think they’re hoping that he can expand those results. And again, you know, you’re taking a little bit of a punt on some interesting profile players with some strong, you know, basic tool sets and skills that could really grow into something special. I think that’s the sort of bet Winnipeg makes when they are taking these deeper swings. Uh you’re also getting a couple of camp invites here. Uh Reggie Newman and Chase Yoder. Uh Yodar could be of interest for Manitoba’s uh bottom six. You know, he’s coming in from Providence where he put up some, you know, mild results, I would say. uh you know, the numbers offensively are not super crazy, but if the Jets can find some free uh depth, support, and really a free prospect or two that they can bring into Manitoba, uh I think that’s all the better, right? The Moose could use more depth. Uh this year, I I really feel like the Moose should be an absolute wagon. And if you can bring in a kid uh from, you know, an invite situation that suddenly pops off and does really well and maybe even earns some sort of atto or something, uh I really don’t think that that’s the worst outcome, right? Um I say that jokingly. It’s awesome, right? Anytime, you know, one of these players can earn a prolevel contract, I’m all for it. I think it’s great and I think that’s really what this prospect showdown’s going to be. It’s going to be like a little bit of a taste of action. uh you’ll have some legitimate jockeying to try and get maybe an invite to a moose camp. So, uh get excited, man. This is like the real deal now. We’re starting to get closer and closer uh to the start of the season. You know, this is always one of those times where, you know, the prospects come out, they play maybe some scrimmages and games. They have one of these little prospect tournaments. You get excited while everyone else on the main club is starting to come back to action. You know, they’re warming up. They’re getting ready for preseason. And I think it’s just a it’s just a good time, right? We’re getting to the fall, temperatures are dropping, hockey is almost back, and I’m looking forward to the season in some ways, even if my expectation for the playoffs uh is modest, right? I I think that this could be a really cool year for the Jets organizationally to see a lot of their pipeline expand to grow, and to develop into something really cool, despite the fact that the Jets don’t really draft in high areas, right? Winnipeg has to make do with a lot of mid-tier picks. And I think the Jets have found a lot of value. Uh Kieran Walton will be fun to watch as well. Walton had such a strong year with Sudbury last year. Even got himself a couple of Moose games and even scored his first pro point. So surely, you know, from here on out, uh it’s got to be the sky’s the limit for the kid, right? You’re you’re basically your Ta Thompson of the Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg Jets. He’s not going to be in Manitoba this year, but he won’t be uh too too many more seasons out from joining that squad. So get excited as we get, you know, continued looks at some of our top prospects. But curious to know which young guns you’re keeping your eye out on obviously in that we’ll have Alex Worththington and Dom Devenentis Worthington kind of joining for the first time really um out of Edmonton and you know Dven Centy’s he’ll be joining of course from some stints with both the Moose and ADS. Lots of exciting guys to potentially back up Helluck in the future. We will keep an eye on them for sure. But of course heading into all of this um after the prospect showdown, you’ve got you’ve got preseason, right? And I want to talk a little bit about what I hope to see this preseason and what I’m expecting. But before we do, did want to shout out our friends and partners at FanDuel. The NFL season’s finally here and FanDuel is making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’t miss offer. Right now, new customers can bet just $5. And if your bet wins, you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. FanDuel loves helping you win big. And if you think you know who’s going to win out on this year’s championship run for the NFL, this is your time to pick your Super Bowl favorites. I was high on the Ravens coming into the season. The Bills game maybe has dampered uh some of my uh enthusiasm, even if I’m not surprised. Maybe you’re really high on the Vikes, though. you thought that their that their comeback win with McCarthy was gutsy, that they pulled off a big victory against the Bears, you can make them one of your playoff favorites, uh, of course with the FanDuel app. But the only way that you can do that is to download the FanDuel app right now by visiting fandal.com to get started. That’s fandle.com to place your first $5 bet where you could win $300 in bonus bets to keep the good times rolling. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked on Winnipeg Jets, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Every day, thank you so much for rejoining us in tonight’s episode as we’re just uh wrapping up and and talking a little bit about, you know, preseason expectations. Right, we are coming into uh preseason just a couple of weeks away at the end of September. Obviously, the uh the prospect showdown is this weekend. And I think for the Jets, you know, this is a very intriguing time in preseason because I feel like I don’t actually know what the roster is going to look like as as firmly as I usually do. We have a lot of new veterans joining the team. We have a number of big departures and because of that, the Jets have some legitimate question marks in key positions. Uh Lowry is going to start the year likely injured. So you have a third gap. and the the roster players that the Jets signed in free agency, none of them I think have an outandout clear spot uh or inside track to, you know, a firm starting position, right? Nyquist might be one of the only ones outside of Taves that I think is going to be a for sure starter, but guys like Pearson and Kepka, I think will be fighting for roster spots. Now, I know how Arnneal is. I know how the Jetsorg is, and there’s always been a preference towards the veterans. I I don’t think the team makes a secret of that. and veteran experience can be really helpful, but I think this year’s preseason has more opportunity than it’s had in years for at least one or two rookies. And I’ve I’ve mentioned that before. I still do stand by that to a degree. Uh but you know, Maratesh, who will probably have some feeling uh from the inside of the Jetsorg, kind of poured a little bit of cold water on it recently talking about the fact that it’s unlikely both Lambert and Cherov play many games for the team this year. And I’m going to talk in another episode a little bit about this as potentially being a bit of a failure in my mind. I think this has to be a season where at least one of your rookies really makes the grade and graduates to play some level of NHL games. It doesn’t have to be a ton, but I think you need somebody to start making this team. I think the Jets have a very clear ceiling right now uh in terms of their playoff ability, and I just don’t think it’s that high. The only way that Winnipeg is likely to raise it is either by doing stuff externally or by developing prospects internally and graduating them to the big club. and we know that they don’t do a lot externally. So, the internal option is really going to have to be the play and preseason is where I hope we see at least one kid really stand out. I still think Chberov has the inside track of any of the prospects, but you know, the fact that he’s in this prospect showdown group I thought was a little odd. Uh, Chberov, don’t get me wrong, still technically counts as a prospect. He’s only played a couple of NHL games and I wouldn’t expect him to be like a goal per game kind of player. Um, that’s not going to happen over the course of the whole season. But I I do feel like, you know, in terms of his projectability, it’s easy to see him in a middle six role. Nikita’s fast. He’s got a good shot. He plays that style of uh relentless offensive creation and just high-end motor that I think Winnipeg has really started drafting lately. So, he checks off a lot of the boxes of what they like. But then I I also wonder about the whole speed thing, right? Eers was by far one of this team’s best out-and-out skaters and the way that he used it to create space and to control the offensive zone. The Jets don’t have a lot of skill sets like that. It’s why I’ve kind of come back to Lambert as maybe being a player that the Jets are are hoping to to maybe take the next step this year. Um, I still have some suspicion about, but we’ll keep giving him the benefit of the doubt until he shows that he’s just not up for the job. I still think that he can be an impact player for the Winnipeg system. Uh, how impactful, it’s debatable, right? Um, I don’t think that there’s an easy answer with him, even if, you know, the last year looked a little bit grim. The prior season shows a much more promising player. And that I think is really the real Lambert, right? You know, 55 points in 60 plus games. I I would say that that’s probably the closer reflection of what we’re going to see from him this season. But, you know, does he start the Jet uh year with the Jets? I don’t really know. Uh I think that is kind of a harder question to answer. Um I think Winnipeg is hoping that he can be something special with a Moose to start the season enough to earn a callup. But then, you know, I also sort of wonder with Arneal, does he trust any of the rookies? And I think that that’s going to be u an interesting change of pace. Right. In the past, Bones and Maurice were really loathed to give kids ice time. Even with Perfetti, I think Arneal still sometimes shelters him. But all that said, his average time on ice went from, you know, 13 1/2 minutes uh 13 1/2 minutes and 23-24 to 2425 being 15 minutes, right? So that’s a big jump. uh that that very clearly shows Arneal has put more faith in him overall even if you know there are still some lingering questions as to uh Prophet’s overall game uh which we’ll chat about a little bit later tonight. But at least for you know this this prospect group and stuff uh I I hope that they make some real competition and some real hard decisions for the coaching staff. You know I think the veterans that the Jets brought in I appreciate that they have a lot of experience. They’ve come from some very successful organizations. Some of them have championship rings. I think my concern is that, you know, they’re occupying roster spots that aren’t going to help make the Jets more competitive. I think Winnipeg kind of reached a peak last year and now they have to figure out a way to go uh to that same level and then beyond because the playoff team didn’t really play uh amazingly well in some of these games. They definitely outplayed the Blues on the whole in the series, but then when they went on the road, things really unraveled. Uh against the Stars, I would say it was a little more even, but even then, you know, the the Stars traded for uh Ronin and Grland. And sure, you could have your own misgivings about each of those players, but they were the guys doing the most damage against the Jets in the playoffs. So, you know, that all you know, being considered and and sort of what I’m hoping for out of this preseason, I I just need there to be real pressure for success. Um, I think this team tasted a be, you know, a brief bit of glory this past year. Um, I think that there’s unfinished business for this team. I think Shifley will feel like he wants to revise what happened in the postseason and it wasn’t even his fault. He played brilliantly in that final game against the Stars. Uh, but, you know, the Jets overall just didn’t have quite enough juice to make it a bit further. And so for Winnipeg, how can you try and and and uh reduce the margin of error? How can you make this team better, stronger, faster than it’s ever been? Uh you know, so far this summer, I’d say they’ve gone a little bit in the opposite direction. Uh they’ve made it more, you know, experienced and veteran savvy, but you know, in terms of the overall offensive projection and how this team’s going to be at 5v5, yeah, you know, I I think it’s fair to say that there are still some pretty big questions. Um, I know for a fact that I don’t really have a great read on this team. We don’t even know if Taves is going to be capable of playing 2C to start the season. So, uh, this year has lots of question marks. It’s going to take some time for us to parse through it. And I’m really hopeful that preseason starts to answer some of these questions and give us a better sense of what this Jets team is going to be. Uh, I think it’ll be fine in the regular season. Even if it slips a bit in the standings compared to last year, I would expect the Jets to finish somewhere in in the 3 to four range. I think they’ll for sure make the playoffs. Uh how likely they are to go deep in the playoffs, well, you’ve heard my thoughts on that. Uh I am a bit skeptical, but uh you know, maybe there’s a surprise in store, right? The Jets have found ways to uh perhaps confound some expectations and and subvert them in other years. But I really hope that this season the Jets try some new things. They’re willing to uh make a few changes. Maybe they consider um some new line combinations. Maybe preseason gives them some new ideas. I’d love to see the Jets try CSI again on the top line. I know that’s not happening, but I thought CSI in the playoffs did pretty darn well. Is it ideal? No, of course not. you you’d probably think you’d want, you know, a different player on the right wing other than Ayafollo on your top line, but given how the Jets are and that you have to have uh the sum being greater than the individual parts, I think that sort of approach with CSI was really balanced. It played well and I liked what I saw out of their forcheing abilities. So, you know, even if the individual parts may not be uh at the level of the McDavids or or those sorts of guys out there, I don’t think the Jets have to be that way. So, you know, let preseason help you find some of those combos. Don’t live and die by the old ways of doing things. Give yourself some flexibility to see if maybe you have something else special in the tank. But curious to know how you feel about all this. Let me know in the comments below or at my social medias at hliving loco and at l_winnipeg jets. Before we close out, uh, of course, I wanted to chat a little bit about one of those particular pieces that maybe is a slight question mark in some ways, if only in just how good we wonder he’ll he’ll be this year. I want to chat about cofetti and what he could do this season coming up in just a moment. Most people can’t name all their financial accounts or even what they’re worth. Hey friends and welcome back to this episode of Locked On Winnipeg Jets part of the locked on podcast network your team every day. everyday. Thank you so much for rejoining us in tonight’s episode as we are continuing to chat uh a little bit about this upcoming season. And one guy that I think is is very quietly one of my X factors of the season. Even if I can’t even say it’s quiet anymore, I think a lot of people have a lot of hype for him. Uh it’s Cole Petti, right? The coal train, Profetti, whatever you want to say him. Perfetti Spaghetti. I I don’t know what his nickname is these days. I I like to call him the Cole Train. Uh, I think he has uh the the season that we’ve finally been waiting for uh waiting in store this year. Now, we don’t really know what his linemates are going to be like, so this could be a bit of a moot point, but I I feel like if he’s playing with Taves, this might be the way to really unlock his offensive potential. Defensively, I think we’ve seen Perfetti really grow in ways that sort of align with my expectations, but his offensive game has taken some new interesting twists and turns. Uh we always knew that he was a good passer and he’s got a pretty good shot. He doesn’t score a lot of goals although the past couple of years he’s flirted with about 20. Um and you know in last year’s playoffs uh playing about you know like 13 or 14 games he had about six points. Not bad you know pretty decent but I think there were games where he sort of went missing right and what defined him in the regular season was really good forchecking. I think that was really a super underrated and and really impressive part of his game where he’d win the puck off the wall. Um he’d really harass guys in the corner. He was a real menace. And so I feel like this year’s game it’s going to be about punching the puck in the back of the net more frequently. You know, we had 50 points last year in a full season. I think this year what you want to see him do is start to blossom that offensive talent. Uh this is obviously a contract year for him. Big season coming up. uh he hasn’t really played down the middle much, so maybe he gets a look as a center at some point. Uh I can’t say for sure that that’s really going to happen. I think he’ll probably be used as a wing. And honestly, on the wing, I sometimes wonder if that really is his best position. You know, the forchecking that he shows in the corners and the transition stuff that he does, even with the, you know, the reduced skating ability, he’s still really good at this stuff. And so I I’m hopeful that Perfetti kind of takes the next step. uh he’s already putting up very interesting results in I would say modest minutes. You know, 15 minutes a night is still kind of in that mid-tier of like between third and second liner. Uh more towards the third line. Um but Perfetti this season has the potential in my mind uh to to really just cement his role in this team and become in perhaps one of the elite players on this Jets team. Uh I think he leads by example. He’ll always have 1.6 six to his name. But now it’s time for him to take the successes of the past couple of years and build upon it into a really consistent package. I think if he does that, he’s going to start earning more trust from Arneal. And I really feel like the season that I’ve been waiting for him to have uh just across the whole year is loading right now. This could be his big super big breakout. The one where everyone knows his name. The one where fans outside of Winnipeg really start to acknowledge him. Um and and really the Jets are going to have to lean on him. Winnipeg has definitely lost some of their offensive talent. You know, swapping Eers for Nyquist is just not really a like forlike substitution. It’s not. Nyquist doesn’t quite have the same uh rotational ability and skating ability that Eers did. And that impacts both your 5v5 and your 5v4 situations. You know, Eers on the power play was a huge part of why that top unit was really cooking. you already had a lot of good options, but having Eers there where he could just fluidly swap positions and be this roaming terrorizer, I think really uh changed how that top unit performed. Without him, they were still, you know, really freaking good. So, you know, don’t don’t get it twisted. It’s not a a sink or swim situation, but I I think you’ll notice that that lack of punch. And so Perfetti stepping in here, becoming that player and developing into really a top uh topline forward, even if he’s playing on the second line, I think would be uh the best outcome. And I’m I’m sort of expecting him to just take a leap this year. Uh he talked about wanting to be more of a prick the past couple of seasons. Uh especially this last year. He made it sort of a a point of emphasis to play like, you know, a bit of a butt in corners to really go after guys. And I think he has done that quite brilliantly. He’s a pest. He’s very physical despite, you know, not a huge stature. And uh he uh he absorbs a lot of of action. You know, he takes a lot of hits. He keeps getting back up every time. And you know, this past year, he finally had a fully healthy season. So, I’m hopeful that this year’s version of Perfetti just soarses at a level that we have yet to see from him. Uh I hope that he does it for most of the year. 60 plus points. Please give it to us right now. I’m excited for Perfetti. would love to hear your thoughts on Cole and what you think he will do this season in the comments below or at my social medias hling loco and at l winnipeg jets. For tonight’s episode though, that is going to be all the time that we have. Of course, uh tomorrow, tomorrow’s episode, uh I might talk a little bit about what I would consider successes for this season and what I would consider failures. Uh they’re going to be in some ways philosophical. Some of them might be a little more literal and and standings related, but we’ll chat about that on tomorrow’s episode. For tonight’s show, that’s going to be all the time that we have. Thank you for listening. Have a great night. And as always, go Jets go.
The Winnipeg Jets are just a day or so away from the Prospect Showdown in Montreal. What are we expecting to see from this two-day tournament? Will any of the Jets young guns soar above expectations? Can any of the camp invites earn a spot with the Moose for the upcoming season? What should we be looking out for as we start getting prepared for pre-season hockey? Will Cole Perfetti take an even bigger step forward this season?
