is Luka Doncic the most popular person in Slovenian history?

  1. Doncic peaks for now:

    1. Plays in the most popular Basketball team in the world (Lakers)
    2. Has over 10 milion followers on instagram. (5x more than the Slovenian population of 2mil)
    3. Plays with one of the most famous persons in the world Lebron James.

  2. It’s Kekec, than 10 miles of nothing, then Luka, and again 5 miles of nothing and then everyone else

  3. Anže Kopitar has been the captain of the LA Kings for like a decade now and has 2 Stanley Cups under his belt. He somehow led the Slovenian hockey team to win a game in the Olympics.

World popularity, I’d assume Luka takes the cake by a mile. But in Slovenia, Kopitar is a god

  4. Not sure about the most famous, but iirc his last contract was worth nearly 0.5% of Slovenian GDP, which was pretty wild, considering that Slovenia is a pretty wealthy country.

  5. He is certainly more popular than the person who is considered a father of the nation – Prešern.

But, I don’t think he is the most popular person in Slovenian history – that probably goes to Pogačar. He is somewhere around Prevc in Slovenia imo.

  6. I think he has a solid argument for that, yeah. I don’t recall a Slovenian athlete ever being this popular around the world (I’m Slovenian) and we have some incredibly successful athletes as well, **Tadej Pogačar** won his 4th Tour de France this year, **Janja Garnbret** is essentially the MJ of female competitive climbing, won a gold medal at the Olympics in Paris, **Anže Kopitar** has been in the NHL basically forever, also won the Stanley Cup and is one of the greatest L.A. Kings players ever. but I think in terms of global icon, **Luka** clears all of them combined.

He was popular while being a Maverick, but he became a true global icon after joining the Lakers. so he clears all of them and I don’t think it’s close.

  7. 1. Melania Trump – former and current First Lady of the United States.

    2. Luka Dončić

    3. Anže Kopitar – NHL star, captain of the LA Kings, one of the best Slovenian athletes ever.

    4. Tadej Pogačar – multiple Tour de France & Giro d’Italia champion, one of cycling’s biggest stars.

    5. Primož Roglič – Olympic champion and Grand Tour winner in cycling.

    6. Tina Maze – legendary alpine skier, Olympic and World Champion.

    7. Slavoj Žižek – internationally famous philosopher and cultural critic.

    8. Jože Plečnik – A world-renowned Slovenian architect. Often called the “Gaudí of Ljubljana.” Church of the Holy Spirit, Vienna. Prague Castle renovations (commissioned by President Masaryk)

  8. People who don’t follow basketball would say no, those who do would say yes.

We had some great football legends, amazing alpine skiers (male and female) that were top 3 for multiple years, currently have 2 amazing cyclists winning tours in europe, Kopitar in NHL, had a quite good boxer (ibf welterweight champion) and many others. We Also have a lot of Olympic medals per capita as we’re that small of a country, so we tend to carry anyone that got them in super high regard.

Because of all this, there’s a lot of people watching other sports that would point at all those examples and say until he wins a ring, he’s just one of the richest athletes but not most accomplished I guess, but it’s very subjective.

Those who know and follow him, love him the most, those that don’t, don’t care about basketball and wouldn’t even do a fair comparison anyway 😊
